Does anybody actually read this stuff?
#ParappaTheRapper #TheCompleteHistory #SONY - Hry
I hope UmJammer Lammy gets the same treatment as the Parappa games on PS4 so that they can hopefully fix the flawed Parappa mode. Or even better would be a new game.
Should definitely watch the PJ Berri anime too because I love that guy
King Harkinian One can only dream..
If they could remaster the Um Jammer Lammy songs (some of the vocals can sound a bit.. off at times) and release it in HD, that would be great.
pico_manic Well yea because It exists in the games files but for some reason it doesn't exist on the psone or the psone classics. a ps1 game shark allows you to access it.
I know it's just a dream but....
I want to see a new game with a collection of all the songs and Parappa Songs from Parappa and Parappa 2 adapted to Lammy as Parappa on Um Jammer Lammy+new songs.
King Harkinian IT BETTER...or else.
How if PJ he is too lazy
I may not have been born in the 1990s (I was born in the early 2000s), but I love PaRappa the Rapper very much. It's surprising that this series is that addicting to me, but it is. It cheers me up when I'm upset.

Im kinda young but i just low classic stuff!
I feel the same way, I'm quite young and wasn't alive in the 90s, but I love this game
I was born in 2008 and it's my favourite game
I have lived my entire life thinking that it was called PaRappa The Rappa and I will continue to do so
Mandela effect or not, it's just *better*.
That's how you pronounce it so it rhymes, but it's always been "rapper"

Hang on... Was that intentional?

I hit the circle!
Yeah, was about to say the same. Did Slope photoshop it on purpose?
Yes i did :D Always add stupid stuff like this in my videos
Daniel Ibbertson I almost wish you could purchase peripherals like controllers with weird button placements back in the day, to mess with friends who didn't have the consoles. Imagine handing a player a controller like this one and having them play something like Parappa The Rapper.
anyone remember that time parappa's voice actor scammed a couple high school students?
Yes, I read that in 8chan. He stole $100 from an user of NeoGaf that wanted to do a fan animation about PaRappa (Dred Foxx).
Stealing is wrong but at the same time the users of NeoGaf are natural born idiots so is ok in my book.
@@mrplotter3324 it's never okay to steal from anyone. Period.

you forgot to mention how with each level in Um Jammer Lammy, you get different "pedals" by pressing Select from each of the bosses which makes your guitar sound totally different.
I had both games and I still own em. :)))
Good video, I actually had no idea the game was re-released on PS4 nor that it had an anime!

In 2001 in Japan, Parappa got a PS2 demo (with Ape Escape) called the McDonald's Happy Disc where you play the burger level with McDonald's logos in the background. Just an oddity that was overlooked in the video.

Ha, I also played that demo to death before owning the game. God knows how many times I played that Master Onion level.
I own that picture disc vinyl! I also have a Master Onion T-shirt, and a collection of comics (featuring Parappa) signed by Rodney Greenblat. I'll end you some pics on Twitter if I remember.
One thing you didn't mention is that Parappa means 'paper thin', which ties in with the art style.
It's so genius... PaRappa sounds like 'rap' and also describes the character as paper thin. I find it amazing.
seeing as how i'm 15 now, i dont have many memories of the ps1, more of the ps2. and i never played any parappa the rapper games when i was young. 1 liek 1 cry
You gotta do what?

That's right!
You sure about that?

I do hope there are more PaRappa games, it's a series with a lot of untapped potential!
Also I hear that lovely Vib-Ribbon music at the start and end of the video~
I heard they were planning to do PTR 3 but canceled it, idk why.

Part of me is surprised that there was no mention of Dred Foxx scamming his fans in more recent years.
But I suppose that doesn't have much to do with the series itself, and is more of a personal story about one of the people involved with it. Still a fantastic series.
Link to what I'm referring to if anyone is wondering: parappathescammer.blogspot.com/2013/12/parappa-scammer.html
I think ol' Foxxy has gotten his just desserts from that debacle. No point dwelling on the past, eh?
Not encouraging anyone to go and bother the man about the whole thing. History is just worth documenting, and it sets a precedent for a certain kind of behavior that fans should keep in the back of their minds when dealing with him, for their own sake.
I mean hey, if he isn't doing things like this anymore: More power to him. Glad to hear it, and I wish him all the best.
Fantastic Mr. Foxx
Landfall364 I appreciate that you're encouraging people to leave him alone even though you're informing. What he did was horrible, but good people can do bad things and I hope he learned from it and is flourishing.
I actually got Parappa 2 on PS4 and it’s really fun!
there is a great minicd shaped vinyl for parappa where their car drives on and around it and it plays the music from the car
My first parappa game was UmJammer Lammy tbh
Also the best tip for freestyle is not to be repetitive
PaRappa the Rapper also appears in Robot Chicken skits from adult swim.
Wait srsly, links?
@@remi1112 type robot chicken parappa you are on youtube.
I just remember he raps in a court room in one.
Can you do a Complete history on Oddworld?
Silent Sam Ooo, would love to see this too.
Why would you cover such an awful game?
Mystery Mudokon what do you mean, Oddworld is a good series.
Might want to take a look at my name, pic, or banner.
Mystery Mudokon right.
God bless you for still talking about PaRappa.
IN 2017.
Kick punch, it's all in the mind. As a loyal N64 owner it was stuff like this that secretely impressed me. So much speech thanks to CD power.
Did you just call Daxter "Dexter"?
I love me some Parappa, though. I'd like seeing another Um Jammer Lammy game as well, personally.
Wow, I never knew about the anime! Me and my friends played PaRapper and Jammer Lammy non-stop for what seems like a year. My daughter and I used to listen to the OST in the morning on the way to school. I played the " Mojo Mojo King Bee" level for Gitaroo Man, one of the greatest rhythm games ever, on a PSM demo disk over and over, but have never played the PaRapper one.
Gene Starwind AFAIK, the Parappa Remasterex demo is identical to the old demo disc version.
Oh cool well I'll try to get my hands on it, thanks :)
I never got to try PaRappa, Um Jammer Lammy was my first exposure to the series.
Lol Joe Chin isn't even in the anime. There's a guy that looks a bit like him called Matt though
Pretty sure Lammy isn't in the anime either? But she also seems to have a lookalike...
I'd like to see the extended anime cast put into the real canon of the games when/if Parappa 3/UJL 2 ever comes around.
Christopher Williams lammy was in the background of one of the episodes but no one mentioned it or talked to her so it didnt really matter
Bubbletoad10 Pokefan Plus Matt is a lot nicer than Joe Chin, who I want to knock out more than anyone...
Fro. akie JOE CHIN HAS A BROTHER???
Matt is from the parappa anime
Check the rest of the complete history series here... goo.gl/JjBIHi
About the anime PJ Berri no Mogu-Mogu Munya-Munya, at least to my understanding is the Japanese tv scheduling is a bit weird at least to us U.S. and E.U. folks. They have there commercial brakes in such a way that they need some filler content. I could be wrong but this is how I always saw it.
You're my favorite.
Please do Katamary Damacy - the complete history!
yass shout outs to um jammer lammy!
great video, after seeing you mention sweet tooth though it made me think that it would be great to see a complete history of twisted metal. it's a game series i've not played yet but the story of each character especially in the ps3 release really got me interested to play it. x
I first saw this video some time last month or so ago and since than ive become a huge parappa fan in fact I just bought the second game (an original copy) and its the first sony playstation game ive ever owned and me and my best friend are huge fans of this series now, so thank you Daniel you have opened my game horizon yet again and this time I really do hope you see how much this video means to me!
+Lucious Rodriguez ahhhhh dude :) you just made my day :) so happy you like the games
Daniel Ibbertson no problem and while I got this notification I got Parappa 2 XD
Hei, Daniel, what a idea, history about Twister Metal? That is something to check at for sure. My favorite was Twisted Metal 2, still is.
Raise your hands who want's this!
+Renalds Trakims 2 is the same as world tour right? Yep my fav too :) black is great aswell :D
I think a complete history on twisted metal has gotta happen
Renalds Trakims *raises hand* Black is my personal favorite
Man, I'd watch the hell out of that one! But then, I watch the hell out of all of them, so yeah!

calypso, purging before it was a thing
I received a PlayStation demo disc in the mail when i was a kid. Had about 15 playable demos including Bloody Roar, Tomb Raider, Coolborders 2, WcW Nitro and PaRappa with the Chop Chop Master Onion level! I loved that demo so much. That song will forever be a staple of childhood
Loved this new one! Didn't know you were a Playstation fan-boy on top of being a Genesis fan-boy. Guess we can expect many complete histories for other legendary Playstation games, huh?
BTW: I live in Brazil, and my very first Playstation also came with a demo CD featuring PaRappa's first stage. Can't remember which version was my PS1, though. Probably NTSC.
Nice one, Daniel. I only played (perhaps predictably enough) the free demo disk you spoke of, but I have never forgotten this game. Didn't realise it had all those sequels, though!
I so rarely comment these days, but I'm fairly sure that my PS1 had a demo disc that came with it, and for whatever reason, that was the only game I had for it for at least a year. It had Parappa the Rapper on it, and I still remember when I first beat the first level.
Thanks for reminding me of that, and for the rest of the videos. I feel it's criminal that I've only recently found your channel, you deserve all your subscribers and much, much more.
Loving your video retrospectives Daniel, keep 'em coming!
Um Jammer Lammy was one of the first games I got with my playstation as a kid. It was the hardest game, having literally never played a rhythm game before, or ever needing to use rhythm in my life as a nerdy white kid (lol).
Eventually I did beat the game, and I felt like a pro. This was one of the things that lead me down the road to loving Rock music!
Totally wish the Um Jammer Lammy songs made their way into Rock Band or Guitar Hero or something...
And now you got me wondering where the hell I can find this anime! I was rapping along to most of the samples you put in this episode. Awesome job on this video!
I most certainly did play Chop Chop Master Onion's level countless times on a demo disc via a magazine bonus here in the US. The song is second nature for me whenever the words "kick" and "punch" are said in that order any time. God, I loved this... Great job as always, Daniel!
I would have added a nugget of info on Matsuura's other games, such as Vib-Ribbon, Mojib-Ribbon, and the overlooked Wii title Major Minor's Majestic March.
But small complaints be small.
one of my favorite childhood franchises. Awesome retrospective, and nice to learn things about it I didn't know. Also, I played the demo of the chop chop stage endlessly when I was a kid
I'm from the US and I also played this game on a demo disc. Since I wasn't very good at it I never bought the game. IQ (Intelligent Qube) was also on the demo and I played it way more.
Great video, Dan. This series has always captured my interest, and is probably partly responsible for my love of Hip Hop.
Dude, I've got the utmost respect for you making a Parappa the Rappa retrospective. MAJOR PROPS.
Why does everybody call it PaRappa The Rappa💀
this is such a good explanation of everything thank you SO much for making this video im a big fan of PaRappa and this was very helpful. Thanks
That old Demo1 music, love the hell out of it!
Enigma//UnboxedTV you got good ears
thank you thank you thank you! I appreciate this.. You guys keep me going! one love to all of y'all!
+DredFoxx68 its actually just me :) a 1 man army :D thanks for watching the videos buddy
Loved the parappa series from the first time I played, and later I took a chance on another music game because of it, Guitaroo Man on ps2, another classic. I as well enjoyed point blank with the guncon and I believe I still have jumping flash in its oversized USA ps1 box. Ahhhh, great memories, thx for the vid!!!
was thinking that you should do episode about "Bust a groove" it was an amazing game m8.
Wow I actually didn't know about the PJ Berri anime. Thank you for mentioning Um Jammer Lammy. Such an awesome follow up to one of the best games ever and it blew my mind after completing Lammy's campaign that they surprised you with PaRappa's campaign. While I found the music from PaRappa the Rapper 2 to be awesome, something about the tone and story of the game didn't rub me the right way. Still a fantastic game series and I hope it makes a comeback (would be nice if they surprised us with an Um Jammer Lammy remaster too!).
The original PS1 PaRappa is one of my favorite games of all time. My parents owned a movie/video game rental when I was a kid, and I used to get to bring the new movies/games home and play/watch them the night before they were made available for rent. I'll never forget 15 year old me bringing PaRappa home to play the night before it was made available for rent--I was hooked from the very first song/level (the onion karate master). I used my allowance money to buy PaRappa from Walmart a couple days later and played it so much I'm surprised I didn't burn a hole in that black-bottomed disc.
Thank you for doing this video and bringing back so many great memories. Also, never forget: In the rain or in the snow; I got that funky funky flow!
My parents owned a movie/video game rental store* when I was a kid/teenager.
This video makes it sound like the PS4 port is already out.
Great video. I love this series. My favorite has always been Lammy. I remember I used to play the multiplayer with my sister and friends a lot.
Another awesome video man. I really do appreciate your videos
+Jack Taylor more than welcome my good man
Yeah dude, you already know you got the awesome vids! Keep it up.
Yeah, there were demos that were given out to people through the PS Underground club service in the US. that's where I first played it and I was hooked.
I hope we can see a new Parappa game when the remastered version sells well enough.
I played the demo of PaRappa a lot too so I know the opening level really well. Need to get the game in my collection as I would like to play the rest of the game as I do like rhythm games. Great video as always and I look forward to the next Complete History
I personally like Parappa 2 the best. I don't know why, but it's very memorable, especially Takoyama-san. He's such a babe
good work dude keep it up love it!!
I was 6 at the time but seeing my mom play it, made me fall in love with quirky rythm games, DDR as well, which Guitar Hero never hit me on the same way
I imagine that Parappa anime is probably like Anima Crossing in that it's actually a good adaptation that actually captures the feeling & look of the game.
@6:53 I love how you switched the square and circle button, I had to have a double take on that.... I did have the 1st level on the demo. I want to say it was interactive CD #8 in the US
great video man, learned a few thins I didn't know about for sure =j
love the videos dude
Great show!
I'm surprised you didn't mention Major Minors Majestic March. Probably for the best..hehe
Nice job on this! Definitely learned a few new things. Would've also liked to see Gitaroo Man crammed into it. It's a different developer, but I always think of the game as a spiritual successor to Um Jammer Lammy and the game just oozes with style too.
Make Parappa great again!
El Cavifax :o
EL CAVI
I had that demo... it was so good I leant it to someone and never saw it again! Luckily I found the full game of PaRappa The Rappa 2 and finally played a whole game. So much joy!
I did play the hell out of a demo back before it came out in the 90's(I'm in the US). I also managed to get a copy of the original ost on cd too thanks to Kinokunya in the mid 2000's.
The trick to the freestyle rappin' cool thing is as long as you tap to the beat of the song you will stay cool. It's hard at first but if you know the song like the back of your hand then its not an issue if you know that fact.
The Freestyling Mechanic is actually very simple.
Just tap on the beat with simple algorithms. You can literally do it with your eyes closed. Leave some gaps, hit some beats. Just don't mash or hit off beat. Dunno why people say it's confusing.
Also you can just hit the same algorithms in every stage. Just adjust the speed to the songs tempo
Parappa rules! Love love love. Great video! Thank you
Didn't enjoy Larry's video today, but I know I can always count on Slopes.
Photographic memory on when I played this game the first time. Played that demo so many times I thought the PS laser was gonna go through the disc. Match that up with the US adverts, this game is freaking legendary.
Thanks for this video bro n
please do Jet Set Radio complete history
I'm from the future, and you got your wish! 😁
Love me some PaRappa The Rapper and love seeing it get talked about on this CZcams thing. I feel like the poor paper thin dog has been ignored a bit over the years. Apparently the PAL versions have more of a focus on freestyle rapping due to issues with the 50hz signal. I think everyone had that demo disc. it's like the Mario Bros/Duck hunt of PS1 discs. No matter what you probably have it somewhere in your house even if you don't remember getting it.
Definitely getting the HD remake when it's out. The demo was a great trip down memory lane.
Statesider reporting in.
Yes, we all had the demo disc that came with the first level, which we played over and over, comparing scores, bringing to our friends' houses, etc.
I can never get past the chicken level
Same ahhh

top notch vid as always
6:50 But... aren't they the other way, square on the left and circle on the right...?
+Heidi Roque well spotted
I knew you was going to say demo disc! I was 20-21 back then. I played it stupid, more than games I owned and can quite honestly say it is one of the games that "helped" me memorise the sony pad... I still had YBXA and ABC engraved in my head back then.
4:25 and they say snoop is the rapper with all the drugs
I know every single words to the levels in this game I played it that much. First saw it on a PS kiosk at a hotel and got it for my b/day.
I honestly still get random messages of my little bro with a few lines of the chicken level which I respond and finish, love that game.
Just when I thought I finally removed Master Onion's song out of my head.
Hopefully you can do also an episode about Bust A Groove.
Vib-Ribbon would make a pretty good Complete History video, with it's marketing tie-in roots, the way it achieves it's main feature, and obscure sequels.
Yes! The first level was on the demo disc I got with my PS in 1998. I was 12, and it was indeed a glorious time.
the first 1:42 seconds of this video and you've listed almost all of the games me and lisa have played on our channel or are about to play.
stop having the same childhood as me Dan!
Parappa was 3D
Only in the anime
The costume, Playstation All-Stars
What a long flippin intro!!!... I LUV IT, its so interestin
I never played the actual game itself until its re-release on the PS4 this year. But our second PlayStation (with a dual shock controller) came with a demo disc and that was my introduction to PaRappa as a kid♡
The part about becoming a tourettes dog was hilarious! But seeing as how these were some of my favorite games ever, I'd like to see a PTR UJL and PTR2 package deal.
Oh my god, yeah same here! I had this game on demo, literally just got it now 17 years later and oh man oh man it is good!
I played that first level to death.. it was part of a demo disk, and never got the full game, but played it many years later and it was such a great time. Simple and yet great playability, real arcade fun.
I played this Demo on my game disc that came with the US Official PlayStation Magazine. It was so awesome to play!
Keep it going Slopes. You got fans here in San Antonio Texas, anyway great video. What do you think about Clover's Okami for Playstation 2 and Square Soft's Musashi the Brave Fencer for Playstation 1? Just want to know why not such a sucess and would like to know if their is or was a crazy story behind them. Hell I'd even like the history of the Playstation 1 Pizza Hut Demos. Actully that's how I heard of Musashi game. Damn well good luck just 1 video a month would be cool.
Rudy Lopez woop woop hey everyone over there :) thanks for taking the time to watch and comment
I cackled when that pic of the Playstation controller with the wrongly mapped buttons popped up. Nice timing on that one, by the way.
I had fun playing through 2 recently on PS4. And the demo for the remaster was cool :)
Lol at the circle and square buttons being swapped in the controller image when you're talking about people who confuse their positions
... is that Parappa the Rapper with Spanish subtitles on a PSP? YES, IT IS! I had to play that through all the time on my PSP.
Hey, what was that band game on the Wii all about? I cant remember the name, but I think there was some relation to it. I missed it completely but I cant remember if the reception was good or not either.
Great job with this! I actually didn't play Parappa first. I played the UmJammer Lammy demo over and over and loved it so much that it was the only thing I wanted for my birthday. Then I played Parappa 2 followed by the PSP version of the first game. All out of order lol
I dunno whats wrong with some of those people either! Parappa 2 was *excellent*. Better freestyling and fun difficulty options. You can tell they had fun making up some of those inputs.
Loved the video. Ps1 is definitely my favorite Era of games, with Parappa and Um Jammer Lammy being huge favorites. I've still yet to play Vib-Ribbon, but its coming in the mail soon.
Because of you mentioning Matsuura's early work with PSY S and his game based on it, I went out and found the Point and click game and uploaded some footage of it, since I couldn't find any at all on CZcams. If you want to see what the game is like, check out the video on my channel! I think any fan of Matsuura would be very interested to finally see some gamplay.
I also played the first level on the PlayStation Magazine Demo Disc multiple times in the US. It was the best way to practice for the full version and understand the COOL rating.
I was born in the middle 2000s, so how I found out about this game and why I love it so much is a mystery to both you and me!
