Jesse Colin Young had one of the most beautiful voices that ever drew a breath, so beautiful that those of who were there and listening to this song believed that what this song says was a possibility.

We used to sing this song in church back in the early '70s when I was a kid. I remember a pretty young nun would play the guitar, and maybe another sister would play the tamborine.

“ We are but a moments sunlight, fading in the grass “. A beautiful, simple, yet profound statement about the fleeting nature of life.
This song, like a merehandful of others, UTTERLY captures the vibe of 1967 ….the Summer of Love. 56 years gone. I miss those times and those sentiments.

Another one of the great 60's bands. This song "Get Together" was their biggest hit in 1967. They are considered a "one hit wonder" but they had some other songs such as "Darkness, Darkness", "Grizzly Bear" etc.

This is one of the quintessential theme songs of the '60s. I find that it's often the very first song or album I heard from a band that cements them in time and my consciousness and makes them a touchstone regardless of whatever else they went on to record...the Beatles' first album, "Heart Full of Soul" by the Yardbirds, "House of the Rising Sun" by the Animals, the Byrds' first album, Jefferson Airplane's first album, the Grateful Dead's first album, "Get Together" by the Youngbloods, etc...the they're all so evocative and part of a collective sense of culture that makes each one of them essentially important...

I read somewhere that Felix Pappalardi was a producer for the Youngbloods before he started working with Cream, Mountain etc., though I'm not sure if he'd worked on this particular tune.

Thank you for reacting in such a sensitive and thoughtful manner to this great song. This song was on the radio several times each day back in 1969 when I was 14. I liked it more than most back then because of its gentle rhythm that’s combined with a very inspiring message.

You might want to investigate Quicksilver. A west coast hippie jam band, very trippy. Ken Kesey's favorite band. Apart from their "big hit" of Fresh Air they were experimental with some scriptural references (Pride of Man, Joseph's Coat). Best appreciated in an altered state

Hippy national anthem… later became Jesse Colin
Young and the young bloods still touring today. quicksilver is one of my favorite bands. You definitely want to do those two songs they bring up great band San Francisco sound headliners back in the 60s…. Also, check out Savoy Brown.

The 'peace movement' of the `60's amongst the young was strong, in defiance of the Vietnam war. Such 'solidarity' had a desired impact -though years later. Today, it's much different; people are more divided, and 'uncertainty' abounds... Nonetheless, this man -John Slop, likes cats. He's got my vote!

Chester "Chet" Powers AKA Dino Valenti wrote this. Youngblood's made it a hit.
He is the guy who sang Fresh Air w/Quicksilver Messenger Service among other great QMS songs.
He did prison time, some in Folsom State for marijuana possession.

Where to go from here? First to Quicksilver's "What About Me?" which you mentioned, and which is a very badass song perhaps even now, but certainly for its time. No idea it was the same writer, but it makes sense. Second...check out some Jesse Colin Young songs, such as these beauties. (He sings like a songbird, btw, and these are from his album, Songbird.) "Before You Came" (similar to Elton John's "Indian Sunset"), "Daniel", and the title cut, "Songbird". Today's song was an anthem for the time of peace and love, back in the day, before the night.

They were anything but what "one hit wonder" suggests...starting with that quality equates to hits...NOT. Jesse Colin Young was as fine a musician as you'd want to find. Singer; songwriter; bass player; lead player sometimes. He has a voice like an angel. Best Youngbloods song: 'Ride the Wind', from the Elephant Mountain album...the vocal is to die for. And he had a very real solo career. His album, "Songbird" has about 9 songs, and about 7 are wonderful. Best? Maybe "Before You Came". Please, try these two. Beautiful as Ge Together is, he was only beginning.
