Boy I miss the days when it was cool to sing about love, brotherhood, and peace without some miserable troll making fun of you. People in 1967 actually believed that love and songs of brotherhood could actually change the world.
Nice words my brother. I'm in my early 70's and am saddened to look around and see that the lessons of those songs has not been learned.

We were unfortunately naive to think our generation could make a difference to those rich and powerful in government and business!
We still had an air of innocence about us that made us all poets and dreamers. We felt like we were part of something bigger....something right and true. We thought those days would last forever, like our youth. All I know is that it was far better being 20 in the 70's than being 70 in the 20's.
Both of you would have been in your element in the 60s / 70s. Back then lived our lives in the words of this song.
We dared to dream and for a few short years, the dream became reality. We tried to be the best we could be and aspired to live in harmony with the planet and each other. It was a magical, almost mystical time that we were privileged to be a part of. It seems like a million years ago until you hear a song like this....then the memories come racing back, never to be forgotten.

This song and He Ain't Heavy He's My Brother (Hollies) best represent the peace and love aspirations of the mid to late 60s, IMO.

Having grown up in the '60s and '70s, I say with confidence you both would have fit in beautifully! To see what's transpired over those intervening years is discouraging, no doubt. But every time I visit your channel, you offer myself (and so many others) "a moment's sunlight." Thank you so much!
I was a young boy when this song aired. I our biggest worry was being drafted into the Vietnam war. This song, for me, a was a hope for peace.
I was ten years old when this magical song infused the summer air of 1967 with a vibration that the youth felt but could not fully understand. We were aware of that horrific Vietnam war and of the news of our neighbors and relatives being sent home in flagged draped coffins. Young boys lives ended almost before they had begun. All of that music begged those in charge to remember love. All of that music was making people realize that this war was not justifiable. Then, drugs began flooding in and distracted the reasonable people away from reason. Music such as The Youngbloods "Get Together" was indeed a moment of sunlight fading in the grass.

My only brother is two years older than I am, and we were both entering adulthood during the British Invasion, and by the time 1967 rolled around, we were in our twenties. My brother got heavily into hard drugs in his teenage years, and although we were closer than two brothers ever were today, we no longer communicate. His mind has been burned out with too many hard drugs and too many years of alcoholism. This beautiful song of hope from the summer of love always reminds me of him and much better, easier days.

I pray that somehow you two can reconnect before it's too late. My father just passed last month and he and his only surviving brother haven't spoken in decades. IDK how my uncle feels right now bc my family always had a difficult time expressing feelings for some reason. By the Grace of God, I am almost 15 years sober. But during my decades long reign of terror, I destroyed many relationships - some close, some not so close. I tormented my family and friends for years. Some of them did cut me off at times for a year or so - and of course I blamed them. I'm not sure why I'm telling you all this. It is certainly not my intention to imply that you can be the one to reconnect. I now understand that some times you have to cut people off for your own sanity. Or maybe he's the one that stopped talking to you. Idk. You are my father's age. I was born in 68 when he was 22 years old and in Vietnam. If you didn't mention your age, I prob would've stopped with the first sentence and just said my prayer for you. But I felt the need to tell you a little of my family dysfunction just to let you know that you are not alone, and I pray for you and especially your brother. God bless
@snakeinthegrass7443 Thank you for your prayers. They are greatly appreciated, and I know the power of prayer. Your fathers family sounds exactly like my fathers family. I live very close to my brother, and I have not given up on him by any means. He is a functioning alcoholic and is drunk almost all the time. The really strange thing is when he is drunk, he is like the brother who I grew up with and is the loving older brother who I used to have. However, when he is sober, he is a completely changed person and is full of hatred and anger. I believe it is because of guilt because him and his wife didn't give their children a chance at a good, successful life but raised them around drugs and people who a grown person wouldn't want to associate with. He also gave my parents a lot of grief and misery when they were alive. There is no one in the family who he didn't hurt and used to get what he wanted. I have always understood his illnesses because I was raised during and around the drug scene of the 60s and 70s. I am really sorry to hear about the situation with your father and your uncle. My father had a similar situation with one of his brothers, but fortunately, they made peace with each other and were once again in each other's lives before they passed. Neither my brother nor myself are in great health, but mine is due to injuries from several severe accidents and his abuse to his body from chemicals for many decades. I try to visit, but I am faced with someone drunk who acts like my old brother. That might not sound bad, but he doesn't remember my visit when he wakes up the next morning or anything we talked about, and it's heartbreaking. At times, he is a sober brother who hates me, himself, and everyone else. Thank you again for your kindness and especially your prayers, and know that I will be praying for you, and I am very proud of your being sober for 22 years. Great job.

Mr. Young is a beautiful soul, and his beauty shines on every avenue. This was our hippie anthem and is still beloved today. He was a songbird. And his song, "Songbird" displays some of that high delight. His song "Before You Came" is his own "Indian Sunset" which I think you reviewed from Elton's "Madman Across the Water". Thanks for this timely choice.

A remembered iconic tune. This was during the Vietnam War era. Young people were against the powers that be... I was very young but remember seeing on live tv, police beating the nonviolent protesters ... it did not matter if you were young, elderly, disabled, black, white, Hispanic or Asian, Veteran or Non-vet, educated or illiterate! It was scary times. Many young people died, or became mentally, physically impaired and homeless; after the war. Powerful Corporations, and government profiteers, received monies from The Vietnam War. These types of conflict continues throughout history, especially now. We are living in dangerous times. Peace.

I consider this song one of the major anthems of my generation - the baby boomers (1946-1964) and really represents what we were all about. Things may seem crazy and bad right now but that is what must come out in order to know what needs to be fixed and make people aware of what we must do to get back to loving each other and take care of each other.
Oh my, one of favorite songs from the 60s. You had to grow up in our era to feel the words in this song. Actually, we need this song to play today with all the tumoil in our colleges. Yes, we need to smile on your brother. We need to smile on one one another. This came out during the Vietnam War and the protesting against our young guys going off to war because of the draft. My husband went even though he didn't want to. I admire him so much! We call it patriotic! ❤🇺🇸

The message is nostalgic..when camp's of thoughts and opinions began to split families, groups and churches. It's a call back message. Love and understanding can heal. Listen again to the sound of silence. They foresaw this world by the disturbing things they saw and felt.

Jesse Colin Young is SO underappreciated. Want an amazing Younglbloods song? Listen to Ride the Wind. Jesse wrote it, sings it, plays bass on it, and the lyrics are stunning. There are few like it! Studio version, 1968 or '69. And his solo album, Songbird, 1975, has about seven killer songs on it.

My mother and I arrived in Europe in 1967, and it was the first time I heard what I later learned was something called rock music. This was the song I heard.
Growing up with this music has carried me through my older life. This is what my generation listened to everyday. Instilled in our souls. Life was about sharing our love and faith and not having anyone nit pick our beliefs. It was a more gentle time. Thanks for sharing. Ya'll are awesome.

I remember back in the 70s when we spent most of our time outside and never locking your doors at night, we loved our neighbors and nobody was looking for a confrontation. I miss those days 🫤

Agreed every act of kindness makes the world better. This era is brutal and we have neglected to teach optimism ( not naïveté ) but I believe we have to fight the powers who want us to be defeated. Be kind- help- suspend judgement & help those who are burdened. We are all burdened. Stop believing the hateful algorithms that want you to be angry all the time. They do want you worked up ,it’s a business model. ☮️ Children

"Darkness, Darkness" is a long time favorite!
Another one of the great 60's bands. This song "Get Together" was their biggest hit in 1967. They are considered a "one hit wonder" but they had some other songs such as "Darkness, Darkness", "Sugar Babe", "Grizzly Bear" etc.
I was a teenager when this song was new and it became more of an anthem of the peace movement, more than just a radio hit. It spoke to the times and to our hearts....it bolstered the notion that peace and love could win the day. Now it seems like a million years ago and we diverge further from those idyllic times with every passing day. We came so close to getting it right....then the war ended along with the age of Aquarius

Another great song from The Youngbloods is "Darkness, Darkness". Singer Jesse Colin Young wrote it after thinking about his friends serving in the Vietnam war, and the terror they must have been experiencing while waiting for sleep to come.

I was born in the late 60s (1967) and I really feel like this world needs a complete stop and restart, leave all anger and confrontation behind and focus on helping, respecting and loving one another. Another great reaction guys. This song got massive airplay in the 60s and 70s. Jesse Colin Young also had a great solo career. I picked up Song for Juli back in ‘73, and the title track and Ridgetop are 2 of my favorites that I still listen to today. You don’t necessarily need to react, but definitely should give a listen. ✌️❤️🔥

We will never go back. We can only go forward. The 60's music scene had A LOT of faces and certainly not all of it was peace and love. But it is heartwarming to be with you both now as you capture these emotions and transform yourselves. Make yourselves what you need to be to go forward with love and passion and spread your message in your way. It's easy and freeing. The music IS the key and still fun to share outside if the home.

I remember this song when I was in high school in the late 60s. A good summer song, listening to it a church camp on a small radio in the cabin. Life is indeed short and we have indeed ignored the call to come together. I discovered a greek word that was used in the early Christian church long ago. Apokatastasis. The ultimate restoration of all things by God. Man cannot do it. But God is working out his plan. It will happen. The Lion will indeed lay down with the Lamb. Be encouraged.🌿🎶🙏
All you can do is live the life you want, act the way you want everyone to act, be as kind as you can, and try to turn that little part of the world that you can directly influence into a better place.

The title is ironiic. By the time the song was released and got popular, the band had broken up. They got back together and toured for a while, and Young continued touring as a solo act.
This was during the Vietnam War so a lot of the folk music songs were calls to love and peace.
"Darkness, Darkness" is probably the second biggest hit Jesse sang.

Thank you for another thoughtful reaction. The love and peace vibe was very real back them. But very fragile, it didn't last for more than 2-3 years. It was a moment in history, perhaps never to be repeated. Now it seems that a spirit of meanness and self-interest prevails. But that too will pass away
Jesse Colin Young, the lead singer, is still with us at 82 and performs with his son Tristan. Recently released an album. His solo career was not as successful as his tenure in The Youngbloods but he was always a favorite on the concert circuit. He did a wonderful live medley of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" and "Mercy, Mercy Me." You'll enjoy reacting to that.
Agreed, he did great versions of those songs. I thought his Songbird album was his best, but that's just my opinion. I also love the song Sunlight, his live version of it.

The way I remember the 60s and 70s, young people were very socially conscious. There were plenty of radicals to be sure, but those idealistic young people I knew were more interested in people getting along and spreading love rather than hate, unity rather than discord. Of course, much of that was overshadowed by other events, but what I learned as a very young person was to live and let live. Go your way and as much as possible respect others, not impinging on their right to live and go their respective ways. It really was an interesting time.
