To paraphrase Bob Dylan, the only bad thing about a Gordon Lightfoot song is that it ends.

Further to your point about Bob Dylan, in an interview with a reporter, Dylan was asked "how does it feel to be the best songwriter on the planet?" . Dylan replied "I don't know, ask Gordon Lightfoot!"...

So true. In 1980 when I started working, dad used to sometimes pick me up when I finished & he’d have the radio on in the car. The programme on during the drive featured an kAlbum of the Week’, it was Gordon Lightfoot. Every day that week I heard a song from that album. I recognised each one but had never realised they were all by him. That weekend I bought the album. Hearing him on that radio programme was the start of my love & appreciation of his work.
I think this young generation miss out on a lot by not listening to radio, where else can you hear stuff you never would normally listen to but absolutely love it?

Gordon was a national treasure in Canada. He was one of Bob Dylan’s favourite songwriters . He wrote over 250 songs, his catalogue is huge. He has been covered by many artists….Elvis, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan , Barbra Streisand and many more. He was a wonderful storyteller “ The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald “ ( true story ), “ Black Day in July “ ( true story ). He was commissioned to write a song for Canada’s centennial in 1967….. “ The Canada Railroad Trilogy “ which was also a favourite of American audiences. Sadly he passed away last year R.I.P. dear Gordon🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦

The reason I enjoy your reactions to great music begins with how you two relate to each other. You don't read each other's mind, but you start with a shared foundation and then seek to understand further through listening and sharing. Most importantly you both seem to quickly be concerned with the other when the emotions are touched deeply. It is a pleasure to see. My best wishes for your continued happiness together .

About 12 years ago, I was in Pennsylvania at a Lightfoot concert. My seat was off to the side pretty close to the stage (about ten yards). Halfway through the performances, " I yelled out "Play Read Your Mind!"
Gordon looks up whimsically from his guitar and says" Yeah, I'm going to get to THAT one."
The whole crowd erupted in laughter.
Great memory to have an informal engagement with a legend.

Thank you for your sincere appreciation for a Canadian Legend. He was a beautiful man who loved his country and stayed true to his values. He felt it necessary to keep alive the memories of the heroes of the Edmund Fitzgerald, the native Canadians who were here long before the white man. He was always approachable as he never allowed his ego to interfere with his genuine love of people. A true artist who has stirred emotions with his lyrics and amazing voice. He is missed but never forgotten. Thank you Gordon for the treasure trove of wonderful memories.

Lightfoot's teenage daughter told him that she didn't like the line, "The feelings that you lack" because that makes it sound like the divorce was the fault of his ex-wife...but it was both their faults. So, when Gordon sang it live, he always sang, "The feelings that we lack".

It's always nice to say that Gordon Lightfoot was born in the same town I was born in, and it's still my hometown to this day. He's held in high regard in my town and that's pretty cool how someone on the other side of the world, right now, is listening to him and I'm watch you listen to him. Neato! He was a great singer/songwriter in Canada and here in Ontario, Canada, we heard him on the radio regularly, at least in Southern Ontario.

He was going through a divorce, and his daughter had him change one line - I think it was "I don't know where we went wrong..." In the first version, it sounded as if he was blaming his wife, as in "I don't know where you went wrong..." I am not sure of the exact wording, but Gordon listened to his daughter and changed the line. This came out as I was becoming a teenager, and of course, I fell in love with him and the song. Going on 67, and I still love it!

In the beginning (Chained Ghost) that was his way of telling her he felt trapped by their fading relationship with kids involved. The 2nd stanza was how she felt, and she was hurt also. Then he was like if you just read between the lines (1st two portions) you can see I am just trying to understand why you stopped loving me (the feelings that you lack....not left as the words said on the screen stated....).
I have always loved this song, and its a needed song for those going through this, they have someone else to lean on so to speak. So its not for the PERFECT BLISS TYPES like you 2. SMILE.

You can go straight from this song to Jackson Browne's "Late For the Sky." I'm so glad you're focused on the lyrics as much as you are. One of the things I've come to understand about relationships is that love is not a feeling. Love is a verb, not a noun. It's not something you fall into (or out of) helplessly; it's something you do. Something you commit to doing with your covenant partner for the rest of your life. Authentic love is intentional.

Very nice reaction. Yes, the lyrics are beautiful though sad, and the melody is peaceful & soothing. I enjoyed listsening with you. Please react to Don Quixote (an upbeat song & title track of his 1972 album), Alberta Bound ( another upbeat song!), Early Morning Rain, Beautiful, & Christian Island.

All this music was all over the radio back in my day and some oldies stations still play it. You guys are just so sweet and it's so apparent how much you love each other.

One of Gordon's earliest hits is "Early Morning Rain", a great song that was later covered by Peter, Paul and Mary. Please react to Gordon performing "Early Morning Rain".

"Carefree Highway" is my favorite Gordon Lightfoot song. It speaks to parts of my life. It makes me feel melancholy but that is ok.

My parents started dating in Toronto hung in similar circles. His music surpassed Catholicism in my house. Both of my grandfathers worked on the railroad. I never got to see him live and sober. 5:29

My favorite song by him was his first hit "Early Morning Rain". Having spent a very large part of my life on the road, that song really hit home for me. May not be that popular with fans of today because it was very early in his carreer and people just dont know about it but back in the day it was a big deal. It was covered by Presley, Dylan, Peter Paul and Mary, The Grateful Dead, Oliver , Jerry Reed, The Kingston Trio and Neal Young just to name a few

Gordon Lightfoot has a huge library of incredible music from his early days in Nashville to his folk music of the late 60s and early 70s and then transitioning into more mainstream music. Gordon was an incredible writer and singer, and there are too many wonderful songs for me to choose a favorite from his collection of work. You can never go wrong with anything from Gordon Lightfoot, but unfortunately, many people are only familiar with the songs that the radio overplayed like they do all great music. I always prefer the deeper cuts off of an artist album, and I would recommend reacting to his song "Don Quixote," "Beautiful," or "The Last Time I Saw Her." I believe you will love any of these selections with your love for great music and appreciation for simpler times that both of you demonstrate. I love your honest, authentic, heartfelt reactions.
