Gordon Lightfoot is a Canadian icon. Yes, that is his real name and he is of Scottish descent. This song is about the breakup of his marriage.
As for the Whitney Houston song, her writers stole parts of his song and a lawsuit followed. When Gordon Lightfoot found out it was her writers and not her he dropped the lawsuit because he didn't want to wreck her career.
Gordon Lightfoot always wrote with great honesty and depth of feeling. His music is considered folk and he was Bob Dylan's favourite artist.

He wrote this one about his divorce, and every word hits home. I agree that "Sundown" is one to hit, but he had so many great songs: "Early Morning Rain", "Song for a Winter's Night", "Rainy Day People", "Summertime Dream", and the epic "Canadian Railroad Trilogy" among them. And yeah, Whitney's writers got sued because of the similarity of her song. RIP to the legendary storyteller Gordon Lightfoot (yes, his real name - it's a Scottish surname).

    RIP Gord.
This is such a beautiful song - probably his biggest hit! It's a personal tale of his own relationship breaking down.
Folk is his genre...full stop. Him and an acoustic guitar is a constant (but he's had some great backup musicians) - and yes, he was born Gordon Meredith Lightfoot Jr. (in Orillia, Ontario, Canada - a small lakeside town north of Toronto)
If you want something more upbeat (but still a songwriting 'banger'), highly suggest Sundown!! One of my #1 Lightfoot tracks - it's a little more 'rock' than folk.

Your ears are not wrong. Part of this song was lifted and used in a Whitney Houston song. From my understanding, she did not know that the song writer had done so. Mr. Lightfoot not wanting to cause turmoil for her decided to settle m, as long as the song writer acknowledged that they had taken from his song. I was lucky enough to see Mr. Lightfoot a couple of times in concert, a wonderful performer and musician who will be missed.

I have heard it said that Canadian artists that hit mainstream popularity have had to have worked five times harder than most because of how small the market is in Canada, and once they have reached the top, you can hear the work they have invested in their art. Good ear. Lightfoot filed a lawsuit against Michael Masser, the composer of Whitney Houston's hit "The Greatest Love of All", alleging plagiarism of 24 bars of "If You Could Read My Mind"; the transitional section that begins "I decided long ago never to walk in anyone's shadow." They settled out of court with Masser issuing an apology and Lightfoot saying he didn't want to pursue it further because he was concerned the lawsuit was detracting from Houston, who had nothing to do with the writing of the song. Lightfight wrote the song in the aftermath of the divorce from his wife, altering a few words at the request of their daughter and saying it was a struggle to share such a personal trauma.

The song was written in 1970. The year his first wife, Brita, filed for divorce after years dealing with his chronic cheating, drinking and volcanic temper. He once broke his hand after punching a hole through a door as he was arguing with Brita. Lightfoot was living with another woman during the three-year divorce proceedings. During that time, he frequently attempted to reunite with Brita. But his drinking always destroyed those reunions. He also wrote songs about and for her during the divorce proceedings, such as 'Beautiful', 'Can't Depend on Love.' 'I'm Not Supposed to Care,' and many more. Prior to their divorce he wrote many songs about her and after the divorce her continued to write about her. He never got over her and when he reached sobriety years after the divorce (with Brita's help) he lived with regret for what might have been with her had he not wronged her in so many ways. They remained close until her death in 2011.

Very impressive you heard the Whitney Houston progression from Greatest Love of All. Lightfoot actually filed a lawsuit for plagiarism in the 80's but dropped it because it was the songwriter/producer not Houston in the wrong. It got settled with mostly an apology I think.

  • @marctoad
    @marctoad Před rokem +2

the Whitney Houston song is The Greatest Love of All, and the writer of that was sued by Gordon Lightfoot:
"In April 1987, Gordon Lightfoot filed a lawsuit against Michael Masser, alleging that Masser's song "The Greatest Love of All" stole twenty-four bars from Lightfoot's 1970 hit "If You Could Read My Mind." According to Maclean's, Lightfoot commented, "It really rubbed me the wrong way. I don't want the present-day generation to think that I stole my song from him."[81] Lightfoot has stated that he dropped the suit when he felt it was having a negative effect on Houston, as the suit was about Masser and not her.[82] Ultimately the case was settled out of court and Masser issued a public apology.["
So Gordon definitely agrees with you. It sounds like this song.

As soon as Gordon heard that Whitney tune, he filed a lawsuit. When he found out that it was her producers, and not her, he dropped the suit because he didn’t want to be responsible for ruining her career

Gordon was truly a class act…because he would have easily won a copyright/plagiarism suit…he could have sued and even just donated the damages/royalties to charity…but he didn’t want to hurt Houston’s career.

Gordon Lightfoot wrote a lot about factual stories, but one that hits close to home (across the Detroit River) is BLACK DAY IN JULY. It's about the 1967 race riots in Detroit on July 23rd in which resulted in 43 deaths, 7,200 injuries, and $50 million in property damage. This all started because police raided an illegal after-hours drinking club that had a welcome-home party for two returning Vietnam War veterans.
During the riot, Gov. George Romney (Mitt's father) deployed 9000 National Guard to help the 800 Michigan State Police and Pres. Lyndon Johnson sent in the U.S. Army to control the violence.
The song was so controversial that it was banned by radio stations in 30 U.S. States in 1968. The singing has a deeper tone, almost pleading sound and a quicker tempo than the majority of his other songs.

The chord progression and melody are heard in the prechorus of "The Greatest Love of All"

It's really his name. He was of Scottish descent. He suffered most of his life with depression and was a deep thinker or so some say.

Good ear. The Whitney Houston melody you're hearing is Greatest Love of All.
