Dave Darcy the shooter producer of Motorcycle Adventure Dirtbike TV and Editor at Large at Australian Adventure Bike Magazine and Andrew Clubb, Editor of Australian Adventure Bike Magazine take two 2023 KTM890 Adventure Rs on a 5 day adventure that will traverse the state of New South Wales from east to west and culminate in a day of heavy duty adventure in the desert sands of Hattah.
This test is also an opportunity to find out how the outback is recovering following recent devastating floods.

I picked up my 2023 890 AR a month ago and it is a ripper. Not a unicorn, more like a Goldilocks bike. My 3rd KTM now and you are right, the refinement is finally getting up there with the best of them. Can't say I love the looks but it's the best fast trail adventure bike out there. A really decent highway and twisties bike too.
Great to hear your views and how they match with ours. We try to get these tests right.
Great for getting Ambulance rides😂
I have a 2021 890 Adv R and I'm currently at the part where you talk about the fuel gauge. Assuming the 2023 is the same your numbers are in line with my experience. 400km (250 miles) is about as far as I've gone while riding mildly. If I'm a full highway squid, I can burn a tank in about 320km (200 miles). I agree the fuel gauge isn't that accurate and it's just weird that it only measures the bottom half of the tank.
I don't mind it just measuring the bottom half of the tank. It just goes a little whacky at times. I certainly wouldn't depend on it if fuel stops were crucial.
Dave and Clubby, thank you for taking the time to show me how beautiful your country is. Thank you for sharing your unique perspective to ADV bikes.
Our pleasure! Glad you enjoyed it.
As usual, great video!! Thank you for your videos, enjoyed!!!

Awesome video guys. I’ve been waiting for this one since the insta clips you put up from the trip. Mine just had its 1000km service so gets its first real adventure this weekend. 👍🏻
Great to hear! I think it's a great bike.
I have a deposit on one and it should be in my garage this month. I tell you Dave your channel has kept me going while recovering from wrist surgery for the last month with two more to go before I can get back in the saddle. I've been dual sporting for close to a decade and I've still been learning so much from your crew of mates. You Aussie riders are tough and great to be around. Anyway, I'm glad to hear the 23 is a little softer suspended in the little chop. That was one of my only concerns. That said I still have a DR650 built to my liking and she's not going anywhere. Keep up the good work! From Virginia, USA.
Good idea to keep a back up, I say. I'm confident you'll like it.
Love ya work boys keep the content coming
Thanks Bryce
Great review and adventure. You guys are always a joy to watch. Beautiful country you have!
Glad you enjoyed it
Great review. And captured the essence of adventure riding well!
That's what I was trying to do, so I'm glad for the feedback.
I've seen this video a few times and now I want a 890advR!! Thanks Dave!! And as always, great video!!! Thanks so much, greatly appreciated!! Thank you for your contributions to the MC community!!!
My pleasure!
Looks like lots of fun, some get off's and a very capable machine. Excellent test review fellas! Awesome scenery stay safe Dave and Clubby. Plenty of chuckles 🤣🤣🤣
Thanks Scott, Glad that you like it.
Love your channel mate 👍
Thanks 👍 Please spread the word
Great video as usual.. thanks
Thanks for watching!
i srsly pissed my pants laughing when that gust hit.
That was intense.
Hi from your friends over here in USA. We enjoy your vids and just picked up a set of 2023 890,s . Very excited!!
Welcome aboard! They are a great bike.
Great review Dave. Mine is reserved. Should be getting it in a week or two. Can’t wait. Cheers from downtown Canada.
I'm confident you'll enjoy it.
That's a good looking pumpkin that get's the job done. Great footage of the Australian outback and the Hattah Desert section looks like really fun for pensioners.
Thanks Michael, it was a great trip.
Another excellent review Dave and Clubby
Appreciate your comments Wayne.
Great video Dave. Not only a great review, but done done by a master story teller. Brilliant.
Thanks Marshall.
I Nearly start crying of these wonderfull videos, great landscape and great community among bikers.
Best whishes from Norway.
But we need to get your way one day. Thank you very much!
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
Wonderfull, film Sunday with MAD TV. I really liked that You wove this review into an adventure ride. Maps, reflections over the ladscape, changes, Loved Toby Price land pin pointing. Beautiful shots of the beasts. Love mine but not the winter 👀😂, Thanks for letting us discover the Austrailian backcountry with You. Well done! Now out in the sun and training the dog 💪☀.
Glad you enjoyed it Mattias.
It looks like you had way to much fun on this ride. The bikes performed flawlessly unlike Dave who took a tumble but came out unscathed. I so wish I could come down and have a adventure with you all. Thank you for sharing. I look forward to seeing what next adventure you have ✌️
We've got some great adventures planned.
Thanks. Bloody brilliant ride.
Glad you enjoyed it
Awesome review of the KTM 890 R. They chewed up everything with ease that you could throw at them. Amazing scenery, fantastic towns and roads. Great to see other bike riders chewing the fat after a big day of riding. Keep up the great work.👍
Thanks Scott
Good job fella’s great review. Great bikes.

Really enjoy your videos from here in the southeastern US. They are full of information and entertaining.
Glad you like them! Spread the word. I need more subscribers!
Thank you so much for this review. Beautiful sceneries, well pictured 👍 I have a '21 890R, but more road than dirt use, as I ride a 500 on dirt adventures. Very detailed review of improvements made by KTM, raising the level every year.
A significant improvement this year.
Love the new intro
Yeah, I do to!. There are another couple of different intros that arrived today.
Great review Dave. You guys sincerely seemed to like the bikes. With such a breath of experience with bikes your review came across as an endorsement for KTM. Good to see KTM refining their products and listening to consumers.
In that specific niche of dirt oriented mid sized twin, it is exceptional and should be recognised as such. I mean have a look at the slow motion of that suspension working. If bikes are good, I don't have any hesitation in saying they are good. Remember I own a T700 and if I dropped my bike from that height with standard suspension the result would have been ugly. I love my T700 but there's been significant work done and a lot of money spent to get my suspension close to matching the Kato. If you listen carefully, there are short comings mentioned, but not many.
Ripper trip guys, keep up the great work👍👍
We will! Lots coming
Love the layland brothers aproach. Keep up the good work.
Thanks
Another top rated video showing off the beautiful OZ country side. Thanks again.
Glad you enjoyed it, spread the word.
Hey Dave and Clubby great job on the review. Couple friends have those and they will agree fully with your comments. Beautiful ride. Some much flood destruction. Hard to believe how flat things are in the west. Be safe, get another new bike and ride.
Right on!
very good Dave and clubby , excellent 👌👍
Thanks JC
What a graceful departure from the saddle in the sand, a perfect impression of Superman in the air 😀. As usual, a great video, very informative on the bike, stunning scenery in a beautiful country, you are truly blessed.
Thank you. Yeah, I like testing the bike and showcasing where we ride.
Sempre video tooop grande ragazzi , un abbraccio dall’Italia.
Complimenti per la bellissima avventura .
Grazie. Facciamo del nostro meglio per testare a fondo le bici, ma ti mostriamo anche l'Australia.

Cracking review buggers!
Thanks
Always consistently good videos coming from y'all. Great work with this one, glad KTM let y'all do this. I hope I can make it to Australia some day. I would like to see chin mounted gopro/action camera, especially in reviews, it helps me see more of the dash during the ride. But that's just my opinion, you guys do consistently good stuff, love the channel. 890R is a dream bike some day. I think they made a smart decision with the looks change.
Chin mount on a KLiM Krios Pro is a challenge.
10:11 loved the map planning exercise
Good map
Love it I’ve been checking out different adv bikes and think I’ve decided on an 890 thank you for your help and I can wait to get out for a good adventure! On a side not and it’s probably something you’ve been asked a thousand times but what camera equipment so you use and like ?
Thanks again👍
Sony pxw z90, go pro 11, dji mavic 2 pro, go pro 360
Well Dave another great film the bike I was most interested in buying but none available to test ride here in the uk then I watched your test on the African twin 1100 rode it and love it so new one in the garage manual with quick shifter and ready for adventure 😊
Another good bike. Great handling and suspension.
Thank you, Dave and Clubby... you are legends... As I mentioned in your previous reviews, AUSTRALIA 🇦🇺 is the best ... everything...👍
Our pleasure!
Like how you cleared your leg before the bike went down. Good instincts.
Good management, or luck. Either way I'll take it.
25.28, Love the sound clip
Good video guys.
Pooncarie is on my destination list now 👍
Grea pub.
Mt Panarama brings back some memories, drove the track but I won't mention what else we did right at the top, but what view🤣 that Conrod straight man you can fly down that! 😄👍
An amazing place.
Interesting to see a town on the map called Matakana, 2 Matakana's in NZ and island off Tauraunga and a town near Warkworth.
Anthony
Thanks mate.
Another great vid guys. Dave. I’m looking at updating my riding gear and wondering which suit you’re wearing? I’ve had 6 years out of my Badlands but showing it’s age now so considering the Carlsbad. Cheers.
That's a Badlands Pro A3
I appreciate the time it takes to travel and film all this footage; I commend you gentleman.
Entertaining as always, I'm just starting to feed my thirst for long travels, Well done!
In my opinion, all the big names should strip back the $10K of 'needed' add ons of semi reliable electronics and offer a base model with the bare minimum.
Especially the way the Aus economic market is looking for 2023.
For the mean time, I'll enjoy my "Red Rooster" I paid $9790 ride away 😁
Glad someone appreciates the effort :) . You could do a lot worse than a Red Rooster.
Great footage (adventure bike eye candy). Ripper review.
Glad you enjoyed it
I had a 790r which I got 500 out of 17lt a few times. My 22 890r is good for 450 on that sort of surface. I usually ride pretty aggressively. If you take the time to set the suspension to the conditions, matched with Motoz tyres of your liking. The 890r must be ridden in rally mode matched with whatever other setting you are comfortable with to get the most out of the bike. Love this bike.
Thanks for sharing
Dave that is some beautiful film work out at poonkarie and surrounding areas. Go to Carinda in October long weekend. David Bowie festival. And the riding is the same open and flat.
Thanks Paul.
Loved the video and it was long anticipated once I saw the sneak peaks. How is the buffeting compared to the previous years? I just care about the consistency more than anything, coming from a 1200GSA this year! Mine arrive late this month
Buffeting is less than previous year. Wind noise is the same.
Cheers Dave, really enjoyed that! Any chance you could give let me know what mirrors you were using please?
They are KTM oem Flippy Mirrors
Very good review mate, enjoyed the trip and the extra production value of drone and set up shots. When are you gonna get the 901 Exped ? Asking for a friend 😀
The shoot went pretty well. Sound issues during the concluding remarks irritated me. I should have used a lav mic out of my go pro to record sound separately as I did with the intro. You'll notice colour of different video assets noticeably differs for pixel peepers. Normally I process every asset into pro res, but didn't have time, as I've been crook. Now remember we do the suspension on the 501 this Thursday and then she's done!
Hopefully we test the Norden Expeditions (we get two of them) last week of May, first week of June, so pretty close. Really looking forward to that as I had been critical of a number of things on last years model.....rear suspension and screen in particular. Now knowing it has the same suspension as the 2023 890 we just tested makes me real happy. I hope the paper specs turn into reality. It may have a garage filled with Huskies :)
Sups upgrade will be better then standard, pretty much same bike as 890 you tested, be good to see if you feel much difference
@@Darren950 Remember there are subtle differences in steering head/rake angles that make the bike more road friendly. Last time I tested them there are a significant difference between the feel of the 890 and 901, more than you would think.
I always thought Finke was bigger than Hattah. You learn something new every day.
Hattah I think is closer to population and hence support.
The more I follow your channel the more I want come a ride over there ! 👍I have a 2021 890r and love it ! I’ve had 400 km fuel range riding open road sealed but I think off road plan for 350km I reckon !
Thanks Mark for your support. I reckon you're right with fuel range.
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV will have to contact clubbie for some great routes if we get to come and ride over there ! He’s got it sorted 👍

Another fantastic review to scramble my marbles a bit more,my debate right now is between Africa twin adventure and the 850r.I have a Crf450RL I’m keeping for short trips and single track, looking for something to do 485 relaxed km a day 60/40slab to dirt.Thank you for your input and fantastic videos.
Thank you.
Always enjoy your video's great fun and informative. You and Clubby must have ringing the neck of the 890 to get such poor fuel consumption.
My 790 gets well over 400 kilometers to a tank. Love the channel keep up the good work.
Clubby broadly generalised then, I was getting between 4.5 litres per 100 kms and 5 llitres per 100 kms.
Good that you corrected your pronunciation of Canowindra
Still thinkg I was right :)
Dave rode my new 890 R home last night. Scrubbed in the tires this afternoon. 140 miles. So far loving it. Some false neutrals plagued me though. I was on some really twisty back roads. Probably 50% user and 50% bile problem. And what ripper! On that straights very quickly hit high speeds.
Believe me the false neutrals are you. It too me ages to know how to work a quick shifter correctly. What you'll find is you're touching the clutch, or not timing the shift correctly, or shifting half heartedly.
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV I figured out pretty quick it needed a more positive shift. My Kawi 1000 has very sensitive quick shifter, the Kato is the opposite. Another couple hundred miles I'm sure I'll settle into it. Loved the review by the way. Fantastic footage as always to go with it.
Thanks. I love this content. Your off was so much better than mine 3 weeks ago on my 790r. Sand 1 all good. Sand2 wt fudge….! So question. If you and Clubby ever decide to run a group tour on twins can I get on your mailing list. And if you haven’t given that a thought. Why not…??? Cheers D
Thanks Darren. It would be difficult because we have to film to get the job done. It's a little different to a normal adventure ride.
Great video and nice music, who is playing?
Thanks. A selection of artists from Musicbed.
Hello there, that’s a really awesome video, thank you. I’m just wondering, what do you guys film on, the main camera? Thanks!
Sony HXRZ90
I know you expressed frustration with the focus on short form content, so I just wanted to say this was great little review film. It’s the curative drug for my ADHD :) Also curious about the model of Clubby’s Alpinestars jacket? Looks cool.
The latest model for Clubby. I'm sorry I'll have to ask him next time e catch up.
BEAUTYFUL BEAUTYFUL, amazing country i love since the 1 time a was there 2009. I go 3 time... and Wowww that is the place for Overland and with this bike you're in business...👍👍👍 I run r1200gs now for 4 years. I just sold for change for this one ktm 890 R...

Couldn't agree more!
i went from a 22 KLR to one of these what a weapon! its a bit tall for me but i get by.
Great bike
sill love my 2021/2022 KTM890r ,heaps of mods .. but i need to no more about suspersion set up's for mug like me : ) i carry 38 kg off tent and shit and i way 76 kg ,, do you go high or lower then recommend settings ? road bikes most of my 30 years of ride'n getting back to the bush !! because you guys got me motivate me .. keep it guys love your vids
Andy, I'm not going to type an essay on suspension tuning for adventure. Go and visit a suspension specialist and or read up on it. Lookat your manual. Start with getting static sag correct. Unless you ride hard inthe dirt I would gravitate towards softer suspension settings.
Awesome review and ride 👍
I'm struggling with what I should go with.
890R or an Adventurised 701.
Riding mainly offroad Adventure.
Is the KTM 890 that much better on the road over the 701?
Cheers 🍻
I own a T700. Straight off the showroom floor the Adventure R is much better in a range of ways if you're interested in off road adventure.
Great video and the KTM looks awesome. What is the multi-coloured jacket and vest that you are wearing? Would love to ride that route someday.
KLiM Badlands Pro A3
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV Thanks.
Good review.
Time will tell if they have fixed the airbox issues and soft cheese cams
Yes,
Love to see comparison with Norden expedition hopefully same suspension tune of this 23 adventure r
We are currently negotiating to get a couple of Norden Expeditions. I'm extremely interested in this bike now that suspension improvements have been made.
Is it bad to admit that I've never ridden off-road, hate to get my bikes dirty...but love your channel?
All good.
Hopefully the quality has improved, nice if the camshafts last longer than 20,000km.
My understanding is there has not been many with problems.
Maybe you should do oil changes with oem oil and filter at 3-5k km
Time I got my shit in order for a trip down under, Another great video to the collection guys 👍🏻
Thanks Dave
great review..I still spend ages converting those kilometres to proper miles so I have a good idea of actually how far it all is..lol
Fair enough! There's not many countries in the world that don't do metric. Happy you liked the review.
I knew of Lake Mungo. It's where the oldest human remains in Australia have been found, dating back about 40k years.
Correct
Hmmmmm ! "We found some private property with tarmac" !! Nicely put indeed.
Indeed!
You're a very bad man, in the best way. LOL
You're the guy that turned my skepticism into fanaticism for KTM. Maybe I'm not a Fanatic, maybe I'm a KTM Tragic. ;)
Now I'm contemplating trading my 2022 890S for a 2023 890R. I'm short, I'll have to at least sit on one, love to demo an R version. Very very bad men...
Thumbs up and a belated Happy Birthday to Kayle at KTM for taking the time on a holiday and his birthday to provide great customer service. It's awesome to hear of great service because we've all got our horror stories to relate to.
Kayle is a great guy down there at KTM Mildura
"It's just that sort of lizard!!"
Yeah, I've been forced to call out a few of my friends too.
Dave awesome review as always.. legend!
What is your take on 2023 890 Adventure R vs 901 Norden Expedition? (same shocks, yes?)
Thinking of updating the 790 Adv R, but much prefer the looks of the Expedition.
Will be running either of these on KTM/Husky rally seat & heavy duty wheels.
Any advice is much appreciated, cheers
(I live & ride in Europe)
I'm with you, I like the traditional view of the Norden and the protection it offers.
Wish i was there 😊
It's a nice ride.
You 2 have the best jobs
That was a great trip. Excellent bikes in the conditions they excel. I never take what we have for granted.
ride my custom built "1 off Australia wide street reg / 2 more beach race bikes since built in QLD" Super Duke R 180Hp @ 185Kg wet ABS/TCS permenantly bypassed , now a 1290 Super Enduro R usualy out there Twice a year with group rides. S.A border to Hattah & few other tracks in murray sunset np / ngarkat np. depending time of year its easy.
great place to ride
Brilliant video as ever. I own GSA1250, 790 Adv R, 1000 Africa Twin among others and the 790/890 (and the new Norden Expedition on paper) are the best bikes for hard offroad adventure, but I have one big question and complain: Why, oh why on earth they don't come with Hazard lights? whne you do long trips it is inevitable that you will stop at some point at teh side of the road (map reading, water, strech legs, take a bug off the helmet, a piss etc.), for me its an issue that i dont have hazards lights.
I missed that one.
Just use turn signal?
Hey Dave taking out the long slog of highway and just focus on dirt would you rather the 890 or the 690/701 for the tracks?
I do love my Husky 701.........and 501
Love the video! I’m curious, as the owner of a DX, how does it compare to the 890, particularly off road? Thanks for the great content!!
Steering and frame geometry more dirt oriented.....less twitchy in deep sand.
Thanks for the reply!
🍻
Thanks Joe
Hey great trip. Quick question - I noticed the rear on Dave's was a 140/80 - was that mounted on the standard 4.50 rim? Or was it a Power Parts rim? Thanks guys.
Standard rims.
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV - Running tubes ?
@@mosa4688 We did.
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV Thanks - I was just asking because I have been told that 140/80 will not seal on the bead of the standard rim if running TL. Great stuff much appreciated.
Who does the song at the beginning of the video? I like it.
Royalty free music from Musicbed
25:10 that is spectacular
Yeah it's a good shot.
I think any reveiw of this bike should be done without the tech pack which includes rally mode , cruise control and quick shifter , as they are not standard and cost 1500 dollars. I purchased mine a few months ago , great bike but to roll it out of the shop with eveything most other adventure bikes have will cost you around 29k that incudes bluetooth device so you can hook you phone up to the bike and the tyre pressure gauges .
Clubby didn't use the tech pack, I think you need to go back and look at the video.
Sorry Dave I did not mean to hit a nerve . I think what I was getting at was in future people who are going to compare this bike say to an aprilia then it should be in stock form . I was not necessarily talking about this clip . What's good to hear that clubby had no issues without the tech pack. The only thing I am having trouble with on the bike is cold starts . But someone told me it's because of the higher octane fuel , 95 is better apparently.
@@jlit3665 You didn't hit a nerve, you just missed that Clubby didn't use the tech pack.
You kept that quiet!!! Woulda bought you a beer @ The Royal had you said!!
Stealth mode :)
Would love to test the new 790 !
Meh. I've tested it before on this channel. The 890 is a better engine.
I have a 2021 with the Tech Pack. Any reason to upgrade based on your experience?
When you're ready I would.
Isn’t it hot with the jacket and the vest.. looks exhausting! Great video though it definitely make me want the new ktm
The jacket is a KLiM Badlands Pro A3,so very highly rated for protection. Due to the heaps of vents it is cool on the move up to 35 degrees C.
The vents on my Carlsbad jacket don’t work very well, I haven’t been able to afford the pants so i would not know about them
BMW 1200 GS Urban will you guys do a ride review
Nope. Beemer's 1300 and 900 for us next.
Would you chose this over the desertx? With the deals I'm able to find right now the price difference isn't too bad so it's tempting to go with the ducati...
Difficult choice both good bikes.
Loving mine. The only thing that I dislike... The screen is terrible. Makes for a very buffeting ride. Have the S screen on order along with the clip on spoiler.
You must be a different height to me. I didn't find any buffeting but the wind noise was loud.
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV I'm 6'2 - if I stand up while on the highway, it's like an instant relief. Get out of the dirty air and let the expensive Shoei do it's thing with clean air. I always wear earplugs, and it's still silly noisy behind the screen. Anything sub 100km/h it's not too bad. But those highway speeds... It's awful.
