Queen Seondeok 선덕여왕, also known as Princess Deokman 덕만공주, was the first reigning queen of the Silla dynasty 신라. She reigned for 15 years from 632 to 647. She was Silla’s 27th ruler. She is the first of three queens to rule Silla. She is described as wise and generous in the Record of the Three Kingdoms of Korea; the Samguksagi. She was the daughter of King Jinpyeong 진평왕 and Queen Maya of Silla 마야 부인. Her father, King Jinpyeong, had no son to pass the crown to. The King considered giving the throne to his son-in-law, Kim Yongsu 김용수, the husband of his other daughter Princess Cheonmyeong 천명공주. Hearing of this, Princess Deokman, later Seondeok, pleaded her father to give her a chance. Although women yielded power in Silla, having a female ruler on the throne wouldn’t sit well with most officials. It’s important to remember that during this time in Korea, Confucianism didn’t have a major impact on society so women weren’t in a subordinate position. In the end, King Jinpyeong designated Seondeok as crown princess. She became queen in the year 632.
During her reign, her kingdom was constantly under attack from Baekje and Goguryeo. She tried to ally with Taizong of Tang. It took her many tries but Taizong finally gave in after his empire was seriously threatened by Goguryeo.
During her reign many structures and temples were built and many are still standing nowadays. Cheomseongdae 첨성대 an astronomical observatory, was built during her reign. Many temples like Woljeongsa Temple 월정사 and Magoksa Temple 마곡사 were built with her support. Asking for support from an important monk, Jajang, she built Hwangnyeongsa Temple Pagoda (Imperial Dragon Temple) 황룡사. Sadly the temple was completely destroyed during the Mongol Invasions of Goryeo. It was the tallest building in East Asia at the time.
Her highest official, Bidam 비담, staged a rebellion against her. General Kim Yushin 김유신, her cousin, and Alcheon 알천, a famous Hwarang 화랑, quelled the rebellion.
I will talk about two legends surrounding Seondeok: The Peony Flowers and Painting and The Legend of Jigwi 지귀.

Queen Seondeok is famous for building the nine story wooden pagoda of Hwangnyongsa Temple. The reason she built the nine story pagoda means that she will conquer the nine surrounding countries. After her death, Silla finally conquered Baekje and Goguryeo, defeated the Japanese army, won the war against the Tang Dynasty, and established the first unified state
Silla cheated with the Tangs. Also Seondeok wasn’t a nice person according to history.
I find ironic how the Chinese Emperor Taizong ignored her just for being a woman when later his own son made his father's concubine Wu Zetian his Empress, who in his death she succeeded him as a ruler, a female Emperor. And while history antagonizes her only recently is discovered that she was a good ruler and very progressive one bringing women as officials. Plus Gaozong heavily relayed on her with his 'male-only'' political affairs. So jokes on Emperor Taizong who underestimated not only Queen Seondeok but his own concubine who ended up ruling China.
Maybe the emperor's son was inspired by the successful reigns of the female ruler of Shilla
I doubt it, Chinese empire was the bigger empire. It isnt modern times and back then Korea is considered smol, so smol
They just mad that women rule better than them so they just try to make her look bad.
@@ofieinc.5362 The emperor's son just likes her lol, he called her back after she left following her husband's (the emperor) death
They antagonized Wu Zetian for she was a woman ruling the kingdom.
Queen Seondeok will always be one of my favorite ruler. Because of the drama i used to watch back in the days. Thanks!
why? she doesnt achieve much. war broke out for decades and she can't fight them off and died.
Me too I love that drama
@@endor8witch whats the name of the drama? Thanks 😊
@@marlos200602 "Great Queen Seondeok" You can watch it in CZcams with eng subtitle. It is a factional historical drama.
@9razzler9
You probably haven't watch the show, in its day. The story was beautiful written and executed by the actors.
Aa for the historical Wang Seondeok [she was referred to as a king in the historical documents], we don't know much about her. But the fact that she was the 1st female king and ruled for 15 years in the ancient Korean kingdom, Shilla... Is very noteworthy and deserved to be praised.
She’s also my inspiration. A worthy female leader to looked upon by all female. She's smart, kind and wise.
I read a book about her for a book talk I had to do in 2018 (my teacher knew I was visiting Korea so she gave me a book relating to Korea to stay on theme) I got to see some of the items I wanted to draw in person like her crown, which was an absolute pain to draw but I did it 🥲 so that was a bit helpful
She’s always lived rent free in my mind since then ngl (I wasn’t familiar w/ Korean words and how they’re pronounced back then so looking back I’m realizing how many I must’ve said wrong 😂 oh boy I pronounced her name so badly wow)
Edit: I found the book thanks to google, the one I read was called The Royal Diaries Sǒndǒk: Princess of the Moon and Stars Korea A.D 595
They were lucky that she ended up being queen. She had empathy and consideration for those that really mattered. A true queen!
Queen Seondeok , wonderful to know woman did rule in a world that is considered a man's world and was successful. I love the fact that Queen Seondeok did not have a scandalous legacy as read too many Queens of history do.
At same time she almost reigned with Tang's only female emperor Wu zhao having only reigned early by couple of decades.
I might also add Confucianism really hurt the status of women as apparent during Joseon, putting them on so much restriction but same or even higher burden than men because of family and urgency to produce children.
Get your hands on the epic Korean mini-series "Great Queen Seondeok" It has some boring parts, but its really great. The illustrations shown here are the actors from the series
Its 62eps long ...thats hard to get through even if its good..
Definitely long but in my opinion there was never a boring part. Still a favorite to this day!
First Korean queen sounds intriguing! Can’t wait for next video already!
Thank you very much 😊
So, her tragic love story with Bidam was absolutely fictional? 😆 Ahhh.. My tears were all in vain. 😆 I remember bawling my eyes out when Bidam was killed infront of Queen Seondeok in the drama. It was so heartbreaking.
😄 so do i. In fact, bidam was soooo older than seondeok. Same ages like her father perhaps.
Yeah same 😢😅
What drama?
@@hopeyouwillbehappy8364 Queen Seondeok
It was 100% fiction. I remember reading somewhere that the drama was so popular so the writers decided to add more episodes, namely the Bidam arc. Bidam's character popularity was also part of the reason. They succeeded though, I never cried so hard for a fictional character before Bidam lol.
Great video!
Learned a lot, Cheers!
Glad it was helpful!
We need more world leaders like Seondeok. Just sayin
Great leaders are not just men, women can rule too
Agreed Michelle 👍🏼
@@savantianprince To think of it, most civilizations in the world like UK or China wouldn’t be as great as they are without women leaders (Like Wu Zetian or Elizabeth I). So it means women are great leaders as men .
Koreans did have a female president but... uh... let's say she had a bit too much of 7th century spirit with her.
@@aaaaaaaard9586 how so?
Wow, the series is not too far off the known facts. Thank you this was very interesting!🤗
You are so welcome!
Excellent, I loved the video 🤩, Seondeok is a very interesting character, I loved learning more about her 😊, for a future video, how about one about Magohalmi, the goddess of the creation of Korean mythology, Greetings from Paraguay 🇵🇾
Thank you for watching ^^
Great Video.....hearing more about Queen Seondeok...she was amazing women and Ruler.....also I always have deep apperication for Kingdom of Silla.
Also saw the Show Great Queen Seondeok...great series.
Thank you very much for the hard work & I learnt a lot... She's my favorite ruler indeed....Can you bring us a video about Hei-Bai Fengxi....pls
Thanks for watching!
Good day, Sir. I believe you have mistaken General Seolwo for Achan Sukpeum. The picture was not the right one.
Kim Yushin sparked my interest in medieval Korea and Silla. Thanks for this informative video.
Learnt of her from a movie. Brilliant
Sukpum's photo used was actually Sulwon-gong in the drama haha. I got confused.
8:34 the picture here is of Princess Deokhye (1912-1989).
Interesting
QUEEN SEONDOK❤🖤I watched my first series very much
I really love it
Can you also about Jindeok the successor of Seondeok?
I remember reading the story of the flower seeds
She was a good ruler
But she lost a ton of territory, I can understand why people would have been unhappy with her. All the land she lost represented people and their homes. It also meant they lived in fear of invasions.
Nice I need one on taejo of joseon pls pls pls

UNIFIED SILLA ❤️
My favorite Kdrama historical
Great video but at 8:33 thats not queen seondeok that is a photograph of princess deokhye
hehe you caught that :) yes of course; if they had photographs of Seondeok back then... well let's just say it would've been quite a feat ^^
It’s known Yusin and Alcheon were loyal unlike Bidam
But ultimately we really don't know the true incidents that happened as many people have different stories about the history of deokman's passing.
Bidam is made up character for the series, While Yusin and Alcheon was a great Hwarang/Warrior during the unification of 3 Kingdoms
@@xiaolonglee2525 great warriors in their time and I think that Seondeok’s reliance on them would have been accurate. Alcheon in particular was her bodyguard and as I read, a strong ally. That revolt against her, they would have been “let’s shut this down “
@@xiaolonglee2525 No Bidam did exist in real Korean history. He was the sangdaedung appointed by the queen herself and later rebelled against her when her health deteriorated. His rather short rebellion was one of the huge moments in Shilla history however some say that he didn't revolt and it was a ploy of Yushin and as I said none of the theories can be verified but one thing is for sure Bidam was a real person in history.
@@SH-zh8eh I remember that my teacher(korea)told us that Bidam doesn't have a record in Samguk Yusa. That's why his existence is questionable, but I know he do exist but not as son of Lady Mishil
Queen Seondeok was very good ruler ı love her so much
❤❤❤
Empress ki🤝seondeok
Drama korea pertama yang aku tonton.
Tang`s Taizong must have been turning in his grave when Wu Zetian became Empress

Kim chunchu unifying korea plssss
Princess Duck Man.
Where can I watch the TV show
czcams.com/video/DSBpEIZ7bUc/video.html title : 선덕여왕
Queen jisong was the last in the bone rank system so kim chunchu inherit the throne
Queen seondeok broke the bone rank system for a heir to run as king of silla
Did you say 'Princess Duckman'?
Deokman. Her childhood name yes.
Why are the names of the korean nobility not written with Hanja, because in those days Korea did not use Hangul ? Also to inform those from the sinosphere, who are using Han-characters to write down names, especially of historically important people.
I did for many videos but I thought it wasn’t useful… I’ll start adding that again
She was the ORIGINAL Virgin Queen before Elizabeth I LMFAO
Sorry but princess Duck man killed lol 😆
In the World are sure more female ruler but sure no documents or something Else.
