King Hyojong - Reviving the Joseon Dynasty [Korean History]
#korea #koreanhistory #kdrama #koreanculture #joseon #history #historyofkorea (episode 54)
Hyojong (효종), born Yi Ho (이호), was the 17th king of the Joseon Dynasty of Korea. He was born in 1619 and was the 2nd son of King Injo (인조). His older brother was Crown Prince Sohyeon (소현세자), born Yi Wang (이왕), who died suddenly in 1645. His father, Injo, was crowned when Gwanghaegun (광해군) was removed from the throne by a coup from the Westerners faction (서인).
King Hyojong is remembered for laying down the foundations for the revival of the Joseon dynasty and planning an invasion of Qing with the help of Ming loyalists. He reformed and expanded the army and built many fortresses along the Yalu River on the Chinese border.
He also instituted, in some parts of the kingdom, the Daedong Law (대동법). This tax law allowed farmers to pay their taxes with rice instead of regional commodities and ease their tax burden.
His rule was relatively peaceful aside from the 2 battles where Joseon had to send troops to help Qing China in battling Russian forces.
During Hyojong’s reign, Dutchmen were shipwrecked and stranded in Korea. One of these, Hendrick Hamel, wrote a journal on his time in Joseon and it's one of the first accounts of Korea in the Western world.

Thank you for the time and intensive research this no doubt took.

as i remember king hyojong Although his plan for northern conquest was never put in action, many Koreans regard him as brilliant and brave ruler who dedicated his life for his nation. and Despite these preparations, Hyojong's planned northern campaigns against the Qing never materialized. The Qing dynasty had grown stronger, assimilating the vast Han army. However, the reformed Joseon military proved effective in 1654 and 1658, aiding the Qing against Russian invasions in battles that demonstrated the stability of the Joseon army. Hyojong also focused on agricultural development and continued reconstruction efforts started by Gwanghaegun. Despite these achievements, he faced immense stress from various internal and external challenges and died at 39 in 1659 from complications related to diabetes and a temporal artery injury. While his northern conquest plans remained unfulfilled, Hyojong is remembered as a dedicated ruler who strove to strengthen and protect Joseon.

This is a high quality lecture on Korean shamanism. I am stunned. I have studied Korean language over two decades ago and had close ties with many Korean people and studied popular Korean history but i never knew a thing about this. I always felt there was something missing in my understanding of Korean people some hidden facet. Koreans being fiercely excluding of non-koreans for one part and their distancing themselves and rejecting these ancient practices in favor of christianity are probably the two main reason i was never exposed to this. It's something they sure kept in the closet from me. Yes i vaguely knew there are villages wooden totems deities and that Koreans had a few superstitious beliefs but i assumed these were archaeological vestiges of long gone ancient times. But not at all. This is the big central piece of the puzzle i was missing to understand Koreans. Based on everything i know about Koreans, i feel this is central to their cultural identity. Even Koreans who do not practice shamanism anymore have a cultural identity that is very much forged around the principles of shamanism. Another shocking revelation about this is that the women are at the center of these rituals and cult and that the husband is a mere assistant, pointing toward a woman control of the spiritual aspect of Korean life and a possibly matriarchal origin of Korean society. I have witnessed how native Korean women form a powerful web that is the center of Korean social life where they call each other Euni or Nuna (sister) while the men only interact between them through professional or business interaction. Shamanism completely reveals the underpinnings of Korean women. This is it.

Thanks for the video. I learned a ton and it was especially helpful to have Korean translations of many of the terms (like 속말부) . I am especially curious about the picture of ancestral rites at 5:55. I notice that the rites are being performed in front of a 느티 나무 (sacred tree), along with banners representing the White Tiger to the West and the Blue Dragon of the East, and some interesting-looking posts that remind me of Shamanic totem poles (as well as a 금줄 or wishing rope, going from the post to the trees). I am wondering if there is more information about how Shamanism was incorporated into Koguryo, Balhae, and other old kingdoms of Korea.
