    Women during the Joseon Dynasty 조선 had very different lives than today. In the previous episode I have explored women and marriage and divorce, inheritance, education, performing ancestral rites and what women had to wear. I have mostly looked at women from the upper class, the yangban 양반. I invite you to watch the first episode before watching this one. In this episode I will look at the lives of female members of the royal family, commoners, entertainers, physicians and shamans.
    The queen was in charge of the naewoemyŏngbu 내외명부: the king’s concubines, court ladies, palace women, wives of civil and military officials as well as wives and children of royal family members. She also had to raise her children, more importantly her sons. If she couldn’t bear a son, she had to raise the son of a royal concubine as her own.
    Female commoners and slaves were usually involved in productive labor. Female entertainers or courtesans, better known as kisaeng 기생, were property of the state and from the lower classes of socity but were the only women who could interact with members of the yangban class.
    Female physicians, uinyeo, 의녀 had to assist male doctors because male physicians couldn’t touch women. They also acted as midwives and even sometimes as kisaeng during Yeonsangun’s reign.
    Female shamans, munyeo, 무녀 performed ceremonies for the welfare of all social classes even though they were looked down upon because of Confucianism.
    *Other figures and topics explored in this video: naemyŏngbu 내명부, woemyŏngbu 외명부, chinjamrye 친잠례, naeyeon 내연, yakbang kisaeng 약방 기생, gut 굿,

    Just because something goes on so long doesn't mean it's working. It just means people are brainwashed and/or too scared or don't care enough to try to change it.

    Can you do women's lives from the goryeo dynasty or even from before during the 3 kingdoms? I love this series

      The Three Kingdoms period is an ancient country, so there are very few artifacts. There are not many artifacts like Joseon, so it is impossible to know in detail.😂

    Confucian societies in Asia were very oppressive to women and rigid in structure. It was backsliding in treating women from earlier times like the Tang dynasty in China or Goryeo.

    Thank you for this video. It was really well made. Just wanted to comment on the existence of this rigid hierarchy and why the role of women within it lasted so long. It sounded like you were alluding to the idea that restricting women's rights was working somehow and lasted for hundreds of years within the Joseon dynasty. Chattel slavery lasted for thousands of years too. We now know that it is also immoral and inhumane.

      @loonytricky  Před 2 lety +11

      Oh yes I’m just saying that the dynasty lasted so long even with restriction of rights but it wasn’t in no way shape or form a good thing.

      Choi sukbin is famous for Jang heebin, but not very famous. She was the birth mother of King Yeongjo, and was the lowest-ranking court lady to mop up at the palace. Because of that, King Yeongjo had a complex about her origin.

    I love the point about the dynasty going on for 500 years so it had to be working. I guess it did ..FOR THE MEN! It's amazing what people (women in this case) will put up with if the stick is big enough.

      So if it's easier compared to before, women aren't supposed to complain now?? Then why are people complaining about racism if slavery was abolished long time ago?? If u can't empathize with others then please shut up!!! You don't even understand what people complain about in modern day... U speak as if its soo easy to be a woman...
