Today we'll take a look at the history of Empress Gi (Empress Ki, Lady Ki), 기황후, who was one of the primary empresses of Ukhaghatu Khan Toghon Temur 妥懽貼睦爾 Emperor Shun of the Yuan Dynasty (reigned 1333-1368). Lady Ki was born in 1315 in Haengju, Goryeo, present-day Goyang South Korea. She was born to a lower-ranked aristocratic family.
It is said that Lady Gi was extremely beautiful, an excellent dancer, singer, poet, good at conversation and calligraphy. She quickly became the Emperor’s favorite concubine. Toghon Temur spent more time with her than the first empress Danashiri 答纳失里皇后.
She later became first empress and Emperor Toghon Temur lost interest in governing as the years went on. That’s when Lady Gi increasingly took important decisions with the help of her eunuch, Bak Bulhwa 박불화, 朴不花. He was a Korean eunuch, the first foreign eunuch in Chinese history.
Her son, Ayushiridara, later succeeded his father, Toghon Temür, as Biligtü Khan or Emperor Zhaozong of Northern Yuan 元昭宗.
There was mounting troubles in the Yuan empire. Starting in 1351, the Red Turban Rebellion grew. One such rebel was Zhu Yuanzhang 朱重八, who would later found the Ming Dynasty. The Yuan empire was on the decline.
In Joseon, Lady Gi was labelled a traitor. In the Ming Dynasty she was seen as a corrupting influence. Lady Gi was a woman with power in a world absolutely controlled by men. She was, for a time, the most powerful woman in Asia.

In the West, Cleopatra is probably the most famous woman who used her charms and intelligence to rise to the top politically. Empress Ki was even more powerful for a much longer time. She must have been an amazing woman.
First of all, her power comes entirely from the emperor's love for her. Almost all ministers and generals opposed her interference in power. Even if she killed many ministers including the prime minister, no minister was willing to cooperate with her.
Secondly, the Yuan Dynasty in the hands of her husband is already a dynasty that is about to perish everywhere in rebellion, and even her husband is not as powerful as people think, let alone her.
According to Korean historical records, her family living in the Goryeo Kingdom was very arrogant and arrogant because of her identity, and even premeditatedly took away the throne of the Goryeo King, which angered the Goryeo Kingdom. Goryeo killed all her family members. In order to avenge her personal revenge, she asked her son to send troops to destroy her motherland in order to avenge her. (At that time, the Yuan Dynasty was already at the end, otherwise the Koryo Kingdom, which was a subsidiary state of the Yuan Dynasty, would not have dared to kill the family members of the Queen of the Yuan Dynasty.) Only 17 of the 10,000-man army that went out because of her personal enmity survived.
She's not even a good wife, even though her husband dotes on her so much. She angered a great general after entrapping more than 10,000 soldiers. Terrified, she ordered a general to send troops to help her son usurp her husband's throne. As a result, as mentioned earlier, no general was willing to cooperate with her.
Of course, the demise of the Yuan Dynasty was not her responsibility alone, but both historians hundreds of years after her and modern historians believe that she played a very disgraceful role in the demise of the Yuan Dynasty. She is far from worthy of your evaluation of her.

I think Wu Zetian has them both out matched on power and lengths of tenure. While yes the Yuan territory was larger, Empress Gi was only on the Throne for a couple decades (give or take). Wu Zetian was empress Consort for 32 years, Dowager Empress for 7 and then sole Empress (the first one as well) for 15 years. I think that alone out ranks both Cleopatra (who ruled Greece, much of North Africa, the countries of Western Asia bordering the Med and Egypt, if I recall correctly; it was called the Ptolemaic Kingdom) and Empress Gi.
If you ask me Cleopatra slightly outranks Empress Gi, just because she did it on her own. Their kingdoms are about the same size. But that on its own puts Cleopatra in Second place behind Wu Zetian. With Empress Gi falling dead last.
In the West, strong sovereign women used their intelligence like Catherine de Médicis in France, Elizabeth I in England, Isabella the Catholic in Spain, Catherine II in Russia. Ugly but powerful and intelligent women.
Thanks for this video. Empress Ki is one of my fav dramas. I remember reading about her and thinking how interesting it was that she was considered “evil.” I figured it was a lie. Like the old saying goes “History is written by the victors.”
I absolutely love her! She is the real deal. They just wanted to use her and she never allowed it. It's my best drama. That woman was something else

Honestly I was so annoyed with the way the story ended cuz I wanted her to Mary the prince of gryeo if that’s how it’s spelt
She was sent to the Yaun dynasty as a concubine so she had no reason to like Goryeo .
Her brothers pretty much ran all over Goryeo taking what they wanted when they were finally were apprehended she sent an army of 10,000 against Goryeo .
Eventually she was ousted from Yaun . She was not a nice person in fact she was evil but the circumstances of her life made her this way . So it’s correct she was evil but with good reason .Initially she had every reason to hate those that pretty much made her a high class sex slave to a foreign enemy . However her enabling and patronizing of her brothers who really were the worst of humanity goes against her .
The MBC drama Shindon has a much more accurate depiction of her the latter MBC drama Empress Ki is 90% fiction .

If she had won I don’t believe we would have heard the same history, I believe we would have heard of all the amazing things she did as a leader; because if she was a man would they have called her evil? she just dealt with what was thrown at her.

Videos like this help me understand why the "I became a villainess" trope is so pervasive in Korean webtoons right now. Virtually all of them have a misunderstood noble lady as their main character, and they either show a new side to that character or let her change her "future" (which she, of course, knows) to change the people's perception of her.
Empress Gi is only one of many women labeled a villain by history, but I can think of a ton of other examples in East Asia specifically.

When I watch the movie Empress Ki, this woman is a true inspiration. A strong woman who helped Goryeo & Yuan well. Surrounded by evil people from her background, she absolutely did her very best. I love Empress Ki

Empresses ki is one of the very 1st K-drama that I watch...at that time I don't know about Yuan and even about Korea.... and know I knew the history of Korea... watching this and memorizing that time when I watched this drama.... memories came back.... just Wao

Wow, nice story, if she were entirely evil like joseon & ming dynasty depicted her,she wouldn't have fed the Yuan people during famine time,but perhaps some history are written by haters,and a dead person cannot come and defend whether what was written about him or her was true or not,but since i can't trust the history perhaps i should stick with the movie Empress ki, Ha ji-won bodied that character with so much passion,her acting was top-notch.

It was a very tragic show, it was a very high quality show, but it was difficult to withstand even 50 episodes...

Omg, I love when I learn about stuff that women did in history, even if it's ruthless, or anything, Trying to get power was alot back then, and the standards were quite high to successfully raise ranks, but luckily Ki had it all, Looks, Singing, Calligraphy, dancing, and there's probably more we didn't know about her which made her in the favor of the Emperor, and None should feel bad for the deaths, as its mostly expected to die by the hands of a consort, concubine, or an empress if you were trying to raise ranks,(but generally speaking as they were all humans, yeah ig u should, but they should've seen it coming, as it's common sense when walking through a bear trap,[that's a phrase lol])

I loved the drama and rewatch it many times. She was a woman who was placed in a difficult situation. She had to run the country because her husband wasn't interested in it. I didn't know about Goryo killing her family. I guess they had amassed too much power. But she wouldn't have to be a tribute in the 1st place had Goryo fought to abolish such a disgusting practice. And fought to hold its own. So funny, all the hypocrisy.

This history video is very fascinating. My husband is a direct descendant of Song Dynasty on his maternal side and he descended also through his direct paternal line Joseon Dynasty too. I didn't know it until we got married.
crazy. i am a descendant of Jangsu Hwang clan. Hwang Hui is my great grandfather, Hwang Su Sin is the grandfather i descended upon but Hwang Huis 2nd daughter Lady Hwang married somebody from the Haengju Gi clan.

I hope this has a good ending, because I have seen hundreds of K series that most of the main character or the hero always loses against the enemy only few k series that the writer made the viewers hero not really win but at least amongst the 15 to 20 episodes: the writer let the hero not always (they will only give one episode that the hero will win;when or like literally slap or kick their enemies in the story:that is in the last episode (sometime only 5 minutes before the whole series ends hahaha)... .the whole 15 to 16 episodes the hero always wipe the enemies ass [only expression].. being the under dog and in the end, worst the hero dies or never get happier..

The heroine empress ki, most of the time she ends up being torture by her enemies but at least the writer allows her character to get back to her enemies and : slap them, kick them.. Unlike the other K Series heroine alway loses againts their enemies..

Almost all old period drama based on real life history, the differences is how the writer interprete the character. Some writer said Qi is bad woman, some said she is good ruler.

Please don’t take this show as what happened in real life. what the series didn’t say is she was planning with the court members to force the emperor to abdicate so she could have her son young son named emperor so that she could rule through him. When the emperor found out they became distant. She was power hungry. Also she sent an army to Korea thankfully the army was defeated trying to cross the Yalu river. All because Korea wanted to be independent from Yuan.
