This will probably be a collaboration with JR. Didn't know all those engines were interchangeable. 👍
How much does it cost to get JR to stop using one of those hoists as storage?
Why not do a collab with JR? He has the lift and has been saying he's bored of working on Corvettes :)
Great idea. It’s never bad luck, it’s good content.
He needs to finish that C5 and get it off that lift already.. I'm getting bored of watching car crushers and other filler material
‘Sport truck!’ **blows Ranger motor**😂
Came for the car content. Stayed for the self deprecating humor and dry wit.
This seems like a cool project Jake! A “big block” Miata.
I know the mic doesn't do the sound of the engine justice, but that sounds more like when my Ford Escort broke a valve seat than a spin bearing.
Assuming the 2.5 is similar to the 2.3, make sure you replace the PCV valve when you pull off the intake manifold. Those are hell to replace when the engine is in the car.
The 2.5 was never available in the Ford Edge. It was the 3.5 and later the 3.7. The only 4 cylinder in the Edge is the 2.0 EcoBoost.
The junkyard 2.5 is actually cheaper than the Harbor Freight 420cc Predator engine... and more power too..
Man, I really hope this project isn't on hold due to what's been going on, cuz I'm really excited for this, to the point that I might do it myself
The engine is one of the cheaper parts of this project since I'm wanting to future-proof the build. Motor mounts, radiator, clutch, etc. are all fairly expensive and best done with the engine out, and a toy like this just hasn't been a huge priority.
Lots of Pontiacs driving in the background, I miss our 88 Bonneville...
The MZR 2.3 that was in my Mazda3 made it to 310,000 kms (192,000 miles) before the rest of the car rusted off around it. Never leaked a drop of oil. Never burned a drop of oil. Still pulled strong. These are good engines.
I had to send to scrap my 06 Mazda 5 2.3L due to rust at 296000km. Mechanically, it was all fine too. My 08 Mazda 3 is getting there at 283000km :)
@@alexandrecouture2462 its a shame about the rust. Funny thing is mine still drove great despite the nonexistent rocker panels and floor made of Swiss cheese.
Helped a friend with this exact swap. Took us 2 days to take old engine out, put new engine in and put in some new subframe bushings. It was interesting without a lift...
Actually I've done that 2-3 times I guess, after it was installed the first tune he got melted the pistons due to way too much timing for high comp pistons and then on the third time he spun a rod bearing.
A lift? Luxury! I did an engine swap on a car with only spanners and a jack. Remove mounts and drop the engine out the bottom, jack car way up with some bricks and slide it out lol, never again
@@tortron Out the top is just fine without a lift but both the Miata and an aw11 MR2 I've had to do out the bottom on jack stands and it's a real chore.
It’s fine Jake . Turn the volume up until it stops . Could
Be years from now . No worries buddy
Seeing that miata in the tiny home garage was like deja vu with Chris Rudnick and his pal Brandon's miata 😂
Its not like you don't have a friend with a big garage.. like John Ross lol
2gen mazda5 also has the 2.5 mzr. Mine is 2014 with over 100k. Has the factory oil cooler. Apparently the 2.3l disi turbo manifold bolt right up to these...
Afaik, these are the same engines as the Ford duratec. I'm very interested to see what you do to hotrod this little engine. I didn't know they were so cheap, I might have to pick a couple up for myself!
I find it funny that you praise Kansas Auto Wreckers, yet joy have a JnJ cap on.
Definitely toss the heat exchanger that’s now full of bearing material you’ll never be able to clean out. Maybe get a new one, though realistically these are better for warming the oil on cold starts than cooling it in aggressive use.
Looking forward for more on this project. Although, you may want to back the miata into the garage for better access.
Ahh Craig from dynotorque move, its a slippery slope, if you ls a rotary watch out
For a brief moment I was sure I was about to see an RX-8 Renesis rotary engine get swapped in to the NC Miata. This swap is cool, but that swap is pointlessly epic.
Agreed a 13B in an NC would be awesome !
I would look at the Duratec 3.0. Same footprint as the 2.5 with a lot more torque and hp over the 2.5 and you can combine parts from the 2.5 where needed. I run one in my Cougar and it's a blast.
Sounds like a job for the Wizard and a 2JZ
Tom's Turbo Garage did an LS3 swap on an MX5 (Miata)
These engines need to have the camshafts timed with special tools if the harmonic balancer is pulled IIRC. The balancer is not keyed to the crankshaft. If not timed properly, the valves gain some interesting new shapes.
Good luck with the swap. Eagerly anticipating a new episode.
Just killed my NB... Leaning K or J swap, myself.... Looking forward to following.
This is one of the reasons I really don't care if I blow up my engine in my 2012 PRHT. It's only got 34k miles on it now so the stock engine still has lots of life... but I might even pull it before it fails just to swap it out.
You still need that lift? Hey, isn't Jr in Texas? You got the spare key right? I think it's under the matt.. 😂
Sorry to hear about your engine blowing up... 😢 I am looking forward to seeing the nascar like power in your mighty Miata...
Do it, Do it, Do it...
Simple and satisfying. Great content!
If you are not going to turbo it, I have a stainless header from Goodwin Racing you might be interested in. Has like 500 miles on it.
I'm in the same boat, mine is a 2006 that has sat.for 10 years. I am looking at building a de-stroked 2.5.
And the brace between the two front shock towers.
"you'd have a stock MX5 and No Body wants that", Eh Jake , my 2009 Black NC would like a word.
Getting harder each year to find one unmolested,
@@tortron I must be lucky the , the proverbial one owner from new 2Litre , 66K miles, Power roof Like Jake's , cost £6K.
@@colinritchie1757 probably even luckier noting the £ sign, do they rust there? Here in nz all I'm seeing is very bumpy panels and spray paint touch ups. I mostly buy old nissans and no one wants those, so cheap motoring haha
@@tortron They do indeed , almost no underbody sealant from new , In the UK all cars over 3 years old must be inspected every year , and the results are available on line , I looked at a LOT of MXs before buying mine and 90% of them has some mention of underbody rust. My one is all clear ,(had it 3rd party inspected before buying ) but yes they can be Rot Boxes (another uk saying)
@@colinritchie1757 yeah after 3 years we get yearly inspections too, unless made before 2000, then 6 monthly. What a pain, means I'm doing 6 months of rust work on my mitsubishi for 6 months of driving haha
Gotta crank up this compression :D
Sweet deal on the engine. This one should be fun!! Looking forward to the videos. Cheers!!
Yeah I can't wait to see this swap. Would love to see you collab with JR on it.
Damn, you weren't kidding that thing is rattling hard lol nice trucker hat btw.
This will be a fun one to watch!
If you rotary sway it than you can't have rod knock.
Just a little tap tap taparoo never hurt anything
The 153hp 2.3l was so much more powerful in my mazda 5 than the 145hp 2.0l in my mazda 3
Thanks Jake, love the Miata - thinking of other great coupes, Toyota MR2, Subaru XT, would great to see some Japanese mini cars - Suzuki Cappuccino, Honda Beat
100PJake: Has perpetually bad back
Also 100PJake: 2 Man lifts and engine and stand off of an elevated position on a truck bed
I wouldn't mind having that engine in my 2.3 Mazda 3. What I would really want is a better engine for my 2.6 Mazda b2600i 4x4. Great videos. Look forward on seeing where this goes.
Collaborate with Uncle Tonys Garage and put in a Slant Six like he did !
You definitely need to budget for cams. Even the small ones make a big difference on how the engine feels. I bought a 2.5 swapped 08 soft top with Stage 1 Esslinger cams and it doesn't feel lazy like all the stock 2.5 swap people always say in comparison to the stock 2.0.
"pretty much unkillable." I don't normally disagree with you, but here, I'll have to take exception to that. A very dear friend of mine had a 2.3 Mazda 6 that spun a rod bearing and started lightly knocking. Dude never gets a break, so I told him to bring it over to my place and I'll see about fixing it. Pulled the oil pan, counter balance assembly, and determined which rod was the issue. Pulled the bearing cap and found it wasn't that bad, so cleaned everything up carefully, got some super fine grit sand paper, string, and some oil and went to work polishing the crank journal. Got it smooth as glass, bought a set of standard bearings and swapped them in. Torqued the cap down, the discovered the engine wouldn't turn over. Okay, that's odd. Plasti gauge said it was just a little too tight, so bought some undersized bearings. Plasti gauge said it was great, awesome. Engine still won't move with the number one rod torqued to spec. Futzing with it, the piston slipped down into the crankcase. Shit.
I spent 6 months going to wrecking yards looking for another motor. Saw probably 120 2.3's in the yard, all with holes in the blocks. Literally every single one threw a rod. A replacement motor at that time (this was 7 or so years ago) was more than the car was worth to replace.
I have a very, very low opinion for the mzr series of engines, and I'm SUPER glad I sold my mazdaspeed 6 after only owning it for 30k miles.
I did some research and it looks like the 2.3 and 2.0 MZR are in the same boat. Non-pinned rod bearings, very prone to failure. I wonder if the 2.3 Mazda3 people are doing 2.5 swaps as well?
Or the 6. I had a V6 Mazda6 with a manual and it was a wonderful car until it was time to fix anything in the engine bay. 10/10 engine, but installed the wrong way and far too cramped. A 2.5 4cyl in one of those cars would be perfect, though.
@@100PercentJake I did a little bit of research way back then and found a few people were swapping in the 2.5 specifically into the 6, but the owner of the car I was working on decided to just give up and sell the car as-is. It's a good thing too, cause both of the axle shafts were permanently affixed to the wheel hubs. 😅
Good luck with your swap, hopefully everything goes well!!
So, I probably shouldn't buy the 2013 Miata Club I've been looking at, eh?
Dude, yes. Looking forward to this. M.I.A.T.A.
Wise purchase!
Jake:. This video is now a month old. What's the timeline for replacing the motor? Just anxious to watch you work on this as I think it'll be an interesting and possibly funny video to watch.
Jake, you are starting to grow upon me !!😃👍🏽
Nice color combo, shirt matches the car!
Very interesting content
Jr does have four lifts..hint hint.. but he just did an engine swap in his C5 and the Pontiac solstice..
Does the MS3 Engine from the series 1 fit in the nc platform?
OMG! Watch out for your back!
Time for a 2.5 swap. You will LOVE it.
I’m going to enjoy this ride!
You're the only channel where I stick around to hear the closing music in it's entirety. 🙂
Looking forward to this project, hope it goes good. I hope that engine is compatible with your transmission.
Cheers man.
Also srsly those energy drinks are the devil
I have the same 2.5 MZR in my Mazda5 6MT and it’s a great little engine. I’m surprised that you want to pull the balance shafts as that’s one of my favorite things about this engine. Yes, they may sap a little power, but it makes the engine as smooth as the I6 in my old 525i 5MT or the big 3.0l I4 in the ol’ 968.
I remember test driving an NC whilst my car was in for routine service and loved it, except for the buzziness of the engine, wishing that it was a bit more refined. A 2.5 with the balance shafts would, in my humble opinion, be the perfect engine for that car.
Balance shafts won't fit in a RWD oil pan, unfortunately.
@@100PercentJake Dang, that sucks -I guess that’s why the NC never had them. Well, that and squeezing out as many HP as possible. Hopefully the extra power and torque will make up the increased vibrations.
Gonna be a nice swap
Put in a renesis!
Time to go over to JR’s. I hear he has a lift or two!
Hey that 2.0 still has a ton of life drive it till it sounds like a little pan with a hammer in there lol
We had that engine in my daughter's Mazda6 - I rather liked it. This should be interesting.
They’re very good engines. At work I used to drive an Escape with the 2.3 and I quite liked it.
I thought for sure you were going to put a 302 in it and make it a Monster Miata.
That's a pretty expensive swap. The 2.5L is considerably cheaper than swapping in a stock 2.0L Miata engine.
I'm up to 40,000 Miles on my 2018 Mazda3 2.5. No engine issues, but they did replace the automatic transmission at 35,000 miles due to weird rev hang/random clunks. Hopefully I'm good to go from here
The 2.5 has the pinned bearings so it’ll be fine forever.
Totally different 2.5, The skyactiv family replaced the MZR around 2012-2014 (depending on model) for Mazda applications. Ford kept the MZR engine much longer.
What's the status of this engine replacement?
Dang I thought I’d see a comment about the bmw Supra
Kidney stones for sure drinking all those energy drinks and soda
Didn’t they make a turbo version?
I might have a cold air intake as well you can have.
Hey Elliott!
THE 2.5 IS THE BIG BLOCK OF 4CYL
Cars and camera did this swap
You should use JR's shop and lift.
I don't know it sounds like a timing chain type thing to me but for all I know they might have a timing belt and I'm an idiot but just wanted to say that
RIP Miata engine
I didn't realize the 2.5 in my Fusion was a Mazda engine. TIL
"I have back problems"
*Lifts engine with bare hands*
Glad to see the danger ranger pulling it's weight 🙂.....lol laziness and other factors...🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
If only you knew somebody who had a hoist and a CZcams channel where you could trade some camera man time for access. :)
kswap miata part 2??
If you are going to swap the engine, why not get the same 2.5lr with the turbo that is in the CX-9 and the 2019+ CX-5's? 250hp and 310fpt would make that miata a monster.
I think it’s more about doing a simple bolt-in swap using the existing manifolds, computers and other assorted systems. Taking an engine designed for transverse mounting and rotating it 90 degrees makes a lot of parts not fit, including the balance shafts which won’t work with the RWD oil pan. It would be far from an easy conversion, and at that point you might as well get an LS.
People round here just swap engines in front yard and leave the junk sitting out.
Jake, you're blowing my mind. You have a Miata with a blown engine (not turbo-ed) that runs and drives! You know all of that from knowing what all the engine sounds mean. So, if you were uninformed me and kept driving it, what would eventually happen?
The noise would get worse until either locking up the engine, losing oil pressure, punching a rod out the side of the block, etc.
I like you went over there wearing a JnJ hat. Did anyone say anything?
Yay NC content at last! Boo borked engine :(
Well this is depressing, I've got the exact same year mx5 that that I bought new, back in the day, with 140k on it. Its only hit the rev limiter once in its life time. I'm hoping to get 250or 300k out of it before it's kaput.
Well, is it still going?
@@jolkraeremeark6949 Runs like new, still.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Jake set up a go fund me. I’d kick in
I have a question , after this swap , is your car street legal
Yes, it is. Why wouldn't it be?
@@MiataChannel isn't the engine number of the car linked to the car itself, can the documents be changed to match the new engine .
@Danies Alex I'm not sure when you live, but there isn't any documentation you update when swapping an engine where I live. If your engine blows up, you have to be able to replace it.
@@MiataChannel I live India here we can replace engines that are broken but only with the stock engine ,the car won't be street legal if any other engine is installed in the car
@Danies Alex I live in the United States, and I could put a 500 horsepower V8 in my Miata if I wanted to. I even have a friend who did just that.
👍🏻🤨😔👍🏻
Don't make Jake do cardio running to the back garage
Was the tall helper your wife?
