While I can't defend all the cakes, sometimes it IS a client's fault. I used to work as a professional decorator and people would bring in those big fancy cake pictures but they did NOT want to pay for them so they would change the sizes, or the styles to be within the budget they had OR they just straight out thought they knew more than us so I've seen posts like that before and feel like we're only getting one side of the story there.

I am watching this on my 18th wedding anniversary. When the donut cake came up, it made me smile. The what I wanted not what she got, sorry bestie. My husband and his late father used to go to a local donut shop every week since he was little until he passed. It was a very special tradition and memory for my husband. We knew we wanted to honor that memory and my late FIL. Since he unfortunately passed 6 months before our wedding. We asked the donut shop and they were excited to honor him. Everyone loved my FIL. I told them since they had known him for over 30 yr, they could do what they wanted for the groom's "cake". They created a beautiful 3 tiered "cake" made from donuts. The top tier was made with my FIL's favorite donut. They also surprised us by having a local cake shop create a model of their counter. It had my FIL and his coffee along with my husband as a five yr old. They sent a note of congratulations saying, they wanted to honor my FIL and the first time he brought my husband with him to the shop.

When I got married in 1991, JP wedding so it was very small and quick, I wore my mom's dress from 1956. It was when she married my dad, second wedding, and not white. I still love that dress! It's gold satin brocade with white embroidery and tiny rhinestones across the bodice which was off-shoulder. It's just below the knee, and a typical 1950's big skirt. It reminds me of something Lucille Ball would have worn to Ricky's club.
What would have helped some of these dresses would be proper undergarments. I wore a crinoline under my skirt and a corset to define the waist and hold up the girls.
That marriage was the worst mistake of my life, but at least I looked good!

From a sewist: the modeled dresses have a lining and corset type boning under the bodice lace. The boob pads are needed because the bodice is way to sheer. (Cheaper). There is no structure to the gown without boning. Many of the dresses also require huge crinolines ( not just hoop crinolines ); these dresses lack any crinoline. I guess they assume that you buy your own. They cost a fortune, and, if you know a seamstress, they take forever to make. Some costume warehouses may rent them out.
Wedding dresses are expensive. Try getting one at a sale at a reputable wedding shop. You will almost always need expert alteration by a seamstress.
Some wedding shops sell out their samples, and they have to have samples in all sizes. They need a good trip to the cleaners, but can be a good deal.
Don’t forget to check out long white, or cream dresses at formal wear shops. Many sleek styles can be found there.

i think the word you're looking for is "seamstress" or "tailor" instead of sewist . You say it too, later in the post! My mom was a seamstress, she made everything including wedding dresses, and you're right; quality gowns have an underlying bodice with boning to give it structure. the garbage you get from wish or Aliexpress is not only horrible, polyester fabric, scratchy lace, but you often get zero boning and even dresses without lining! I've seen people get dresses made from the lining only! I'm so happy I learned about fabrics and sewing, to know when something is worth paying for!

@@judithdutton4631 I get it, but that's why the word "professional seamstress" or "expert seamstress" is used. The same way I'd say that I'm an "intermediate seamstress". Just like any other activities, like painting 🎨, people are "aspiring, up and coming, well known, or professional artists" but all artists nonetheless. Unless you want to call yourself _"an artist of the cloth"_ 😂

@@ophilianecr just as long as we completely dismiss the word sewer. That leads to very wierd confusion. How about hobby seamstress? I am now experimenting with historical clothing. 1930’s To early 60’s are fun to wear. A goth store near me sells seamed nylons and appropriate shoes. I am one of their very few untatooed customers. But the clerks are delightful kids, and enthusiastically help me with my vintage searches. I’ve got a few hats from the fifties. It is such fun. Vogue publishes a few of its old patterns - very different sewing methods. During war time - no zippers, they were metal and that all went to the war effort. I just don’t trust hooks and eyes, so that is one anachronism, but I justify it by using invisible zippers. That word “ hobby” allows some wiggle room. Next effort - Edwardian clothes. That should be fun as that shape was achieved by bum pads and chest pads. Even the ludicrously small waist was mostly illusion. ( And a fascinating early form of photoshop where they posed in front of a simple black background, and the photographer later painted in the waist ) yep, this hobby seamstress really enjoys herself.I am considering teaching a grandmother and grandaughter sewing class. A great bonding experience. The grandmothers could add their experience and knowledge, and together we teach the grandaughter how to create their own clothes, or purses, or quilts, ( Grandfathers and grandsons welcome!)

However, as I reached my 30s, I've realized that my day to day style stands more in the 30s -50s era of silhouettes with a modern mix. Think smart, knee or shin length 40s era pencil skirts and matching peplum jacket with studs, a tailored lace blouse or maybe a fitted leather jacket. 🥰

Fast fashion is mass produced, cheap, and is usually "trendy" stuff. I think the idea is that a trend is marketed by influencers or companies and suddenly people want to get that item. Fast fashion makes it affordable to quickly buy that trendy item. The issue is, the labor is not ethical and offering cheap enough clothes means people will just throw away an item once the next thing is trendy. The materials used AND the amount of clothes being thrown away, is so so bad for the environment. All so bigger companies can make money off of brainwashing people into buying something to feel included in a trend they made up.

The clothing that is sold on these sites are made using different far cheaper materials and by people on an assembly line with little to no training in making clothing (so the proportions are way off). As a seamstress, I've seen over the years that nothing compares to *trying on * a dress to see how it works - on YOU. I've made dresses for myself that had to be radically modified, because that style/cut/silhouette didn't work.
And *saving the cake* is a sweet-sounding but mis-interpreted tradition. Saving a regular cake in the freezer for a year will produce a dry, tasteless experience. When the top layer was a fruit cake (decades ago) it could reasonably be soaked in rum and preserved for a year.

The thing about a lot of these dresses is that the dress in the photo has been pinned in the back or even full on tailored to fit that model just for the photoshoot, so it's not just the model's body shape that's making things look different, it's the alterations made to the dress for that photoshoot.

When I got married (35 years ago), I had ordered my cake to have the decorations done like a certain picture in the bakery's book, but with light blue decorations instead of the peach that was in the picture. We also arranged for it to be delivered to our reception at least an hour before the reception started so it could be put out with the extra flowers around it that the florist was providing. INSTEAD the cake arrived 90 minutes AFTER the reception started (there was a big concert happening at a venue fairly close by, and they got caught in the concert traffic), and then apparently the guy who had taken our order left on vacation a week before our wedding and NO ONE COULD READ HIS HANDWRITING! They could make out the number of the decoration style, but then just "copied" the picture, so instead of my light blue, it should have been peach like the picture--instead it was NEON ORANGE! Well, every wedding seems to have one disaster, and the cake was ours. It didn't effect our marriage though, we are still happily married and love each other more now than we did on our wedding day.

It was in my budget, and it had the elements I wanted. She did surprise me with the crescent moon topper - I expected something non-edible. You couldn't buy the materials to make _any_ dress with that many layers for $100. Unless maybe you made it out of thrifted curtains and bedsheets. I’ve spent a lot of money on things I’ve NEEDED to last a long time or something important than finding a cheap “solution” hating it/breaking it and having to replace it, thus spending more money AGAIN when you could’ve just bought the good one in the first place. Now you’re out more money!

We had flowers that we ordered for a funeral - a really tasteful living cross. I ordered the extras for it, and it. was. awful. Their "plusing" was zebra striped leaves, long twigs, and carnations instead of roses. They had to substitute the living moss because it was out of season or something, but said it would look comparable. They were green flowers...
    It was a gaudy mess.

When ordering flowers online its best to use a local florist. Companies like Teleflora, FTD, 100flowers, etc are wire services. They are middlemen who take the online orders and then distribute them to local small businesses at random. Its not guranteed that the filling shop has the supplies on hand or talent necessary to recreate the look. Not only that but the filling florist only gets a part of what you pay not the entire amount which is why most of the complaints for online orders is the item is too small or below value or lower quality. If you complain the wire service doesnt care, they just refund your money while the florist loses on their time, supplies and delivery costs. Ordering something thats designer's choice or florists choice often gives the shop to showcase their skills and use flowers/supplies that they have in stock, seasonal or readily availabe.
The filling florist will also cater to the local tastes. What looks nice and is popular in one area may not be in others. Let me tell you gold or silver accents on a funeral spray is not unusual in my area and is requested fairly often. A few yers ago we had a customer who requested a "blinged out" casket spray with rhinestones and sparkles.

I got my wedding dress for $20 at a local thrift store, which was such a steal, and then spent about $100 on extra fabric and lace to make it long-sleeved, since I was having a December wedding. Including shoes and jewelry, I spent a total of $150 on my entire outfit, and I loved it. You can have a wedding and wedding dress on a tight budget, and it still look gorgeous.

Shopping sustainably has a very high initial cost that a lot of families/individuals just don’t have the resources to scrape together. While working on reducing/getting rid of exploitative, wasteful fast-fashion, we also need to work on making more sustainable options accessible to all!

As someone who is considered plus sized we would also need 3-4 different body types. I’m really exhausted with seeing plus size models that have very very obviously had plastic surgery (i know what it looks like, i’ve researched and had consultations but the price just wasn’t worth the recovery time and all that for me personally) like i want to see what my belly is going to look like in things, i want to see how that neckline would look on my double chin, I want to see how my real large slightly saggy boobs would look like. Or when they have models that are like size 8 or 10 and can very easily fit into a 12,14,or 16 and have it be flowy and loose and flattering. It’s a real problem and so are bbl’s because most of us have hip dips and it’s to hot to wear fake side flanks people.

    • @mycreativeheart4159

Totally agree 💯%!! Most of the plus sized models I've seen have "smooth" abdomen and hip areas. What about those of us that have multiple rolls in the abdomen area? I don't want to hear someone telling me to exercise.... after exercising and losing 20lbs... I now have a waist, but I also have a roll above (under my boobs) and a roll below.... and then a flat pubic bone area. I will not buy clothes online.... I must try it on to really know. Even things as simple as T-shirt or tank tops. Since I have quite large breasts... I'd also like to see more models with G-I cup size.... but small band size. Not everyone who is large breasted is fatter around the back as well. Don't even get me started on finding bras that fit... LOL!! Thanks for posting your comment Lindsy! :)

Although, the bride and groom could simply get some cheap glass candle holders from a dollar store and build it up themselves. That would work too. But, for the price they probably paid for what was supposed to be a final product, there should be no assembly required.

That reminds me of a CZcams Video from Bernadette Banner, where she found out that some cheap online store stole a photo of her hand sewn medieval gown and posted it as a product you can buy there. She ordered the dress to compare it to her original one. Basically, they tried to recreate her dress from the one picture they had, just with much cheaper materials and much cheaper labour (machine sewn, probably in a sweat shop under immense pressure to get the job done as soon as possible). So, knowing that you don't need to wonder why those dresses look like cheap rip offs of the ones on the photos, it's because that is exactly what they are.
