- When you log into a new computer for the first time or finish a new Windows installation, you will most likely be asked to create a PIN number that you can use to login with rather than your password. You might not even realize that this PIN will be used in place of your password and that might not be what you want.
Then when you go to remove your PIN, you might find that the Remove button is greyed out, not allowing you to remove it. Fortunately, this is an easy fix and you just need to change the Hello sign in options in the Windows settings. If you are using Windows Professional Edition then you can even use the Group Policy Editor to help fix this problem. This demo shows how to do this with a Microsoft account as well as a local user account and was made with Windows 11 but the procedure works exactly the same for Windows 10.
Here is how you create a local account in Windows 11 (and Windows 10).

what if im not logged in on windows and if im trying that asks me the password
i have removed this 2 times but it again forces me to create pin. please help
Yeah I'm following your video but the thing is my father has a new HP that came with Windows 11 installed refresh colors computer on a task for a pin code that he made I put in the wrong one and then I pressed on forgot then on the screen shows this little special code then I pressed in a pin code I thought he was using that doesn't work he calls me and he tells me now that they can't get into his account because his pin sorry hello pain isn't working so now he's kind of walked out so how do I get into it or better yet how does he get into his account his windows 11 he is stuck on the hello the windows 11 hello screen???? I hope this makes sense so anyway I can summon it up
There should be a I forgot my PIN option where he can then enter the password for his Microsoft account. And if he forgot that then he should be able to reset that as well.
Do I have to create a pin to have the option to remove it? I've never entered one and since the last update Windows keeps forcing the pin set-up page that I can't escape from unless I reboot. It is really annoying.
When that happens, sometimes you can fix it by going to the PIN setup and then cancelling it after you click on the set up button and then choose dismiss. You may or may not get that option. You can also try to set one up and then remove it and see if it stops bothering you.
@@OnlineComputerTips I don't have the dismiss option. I'll try the second solution, thanks.
@DrMask Im not sure what you mean by reboot and get out of it.
@DrMask If you have a touch screen, under your password login space, see if you have 2 icons. One choice is for touch screen and the other for password. Choose the password icon. That was the problem I had and I hadn't notice it at first, because I was never asked for a pin before. Dunno if it makes sense?
Ive got a unique problem- so i bought a surface pro and I accidently signed in with the wrong outlook account during the setup. i set up my windows hello face id and password and then realized I didn't want this account on my device. i went to delete that off my device an signed in with a new one and again set up my face id and password. this time it didn't let me set up face id as I had already used my face on another account (which I deleted). now after trying to sign back into the old account and delete my face from windows hello it doesn't show up, and now I'm stuck with two accounts that wont accept my face id coz they're thinking its already being used on another account. i know what i just said may not have made any sense so don't hesitate to ask! anything helps thank you!!
Did you remove your old account from your computer? It sounds like it's still there if you were able to sign into it.
@@OnlineComputerTips I ended up resetting my surface completely and that worked. I was able to sign in with the right account and face recognition this time. Thanks for your response though!
Additional settings is not present under sign in options
Same- cannot find this setting.
Still doesn't allow me to remove it
Me too😢
I cant even get in to be able to do this
so how do you do this if the pc is on a domain and there is no local account?
Computers on a domain should not have a PIN unless it was specifically setup by the domain admins so if that was the case I would think you would have to be a domain admin to remove it in Group Policy. Plus the Domain Admins group should be part of the Local Admins group so you can log on locally with a domain admin account if needed.
As of 2024 This option is no longer available. Please create update video if there's a new way to do this.
Just tried it on a 23H2 build 22631.3737 PC and it still works.
I did all of this and the remove button is still greyed out. :(
yes
same here
EVERY time I start my laptop, "please create your pin" how do I remove this unwanted trash altogether?
Have you tried creating the PIN and then going through the removal process?
How do you turn it off if you can't get to your desktop? I can't even get in. What to do?
Did you try the I forgot my PIN option?
@@OnlineComputerTips I rebooted and got in but when I tried to fix the pin it says it is not setup and they have my old number and I can't see any way to change my old number with them.
@@veronicabullard2694 It's hard to say what the issue is without being able to see it. If you go to the Windows options, then accounts and then sign in options and turn off Windows Hello sign in does that help anything?
@@OnlineComputerTips I'll try it. I'm not confident it will work.
And what if you freaking forgot your PIN and can enter your password but only through the recovery console…That is what has me stuck I have my password but cannot reach the desktop
Didn't it ask you for your Microsoft account password when you clicked on I forgot my PIN?
What if you don’t have the pin or old email address
Do you mean at the login screen where its asking you for the PIN and you say you forgot and it wants your Microsoft account email address?
@@OnlineComputerTips it want me to put the password of an email i dont own
@@RandomBaconMM2 If you don't know the PIN or have the Microsoft account email and don't have any other accounts to get into the computer with then you will need to try a password reset boot disk. Here are a several products that will do the job.

Have PIN option only and don't know the PIN.... not helpful
Try the option for I forgot my PIN and you should be able to log in with your Microsoft password.
I can't get to that point. I can't log in at all
Just saying you can reset your pc if you forget the pin
We are trying to get in
didn't help:(
Did you sort it?
Why would anyone want to do this?! It’s widely recommended to do the opposite..
You can't reset the admin pin
