Stretching 855 miles (1,375km) across the north of the country, at its source in the Himalayas its water is crystal clear.
However, once it streams through New Delhi, it turns into one of the filthiest rivers in the world. Rapid urbanisation is partly to blame, but so is lax enforcement of laws against illegal dumping.

When our civilization has been around for thousands of years like India (assuming we last that long, which isn't looking very likely) we will be overpopulated and undereducated. It's already beginning, and we've only been here for a few hundred years. So everyone can get off their high horses and stop judging other people.

TJ Soulsurfer there are many different religions and beliefs all across India. That being said, unfortunately the Hindus still believe in a caste system, and at the bottom of that system are most likely the people you see defecating on the river. They don’t have access to a lot of money, and they are the ones who are forced to clean up after others. This leads them to use the river as a dumping ground because of the poverty they are in. In addition to this, there is no saying that the people we saw were Hindus.

If Ganga & Yamuna are polluted today, that doesn't mean it's gonna stay like this. Efforts are being done to clean it up. Hey, you can't just blame the government. The people are equally at fault. They throw non-biodegradable wastes into the rivers. The industries on the banks of the rivers illegally allow their toxic water to flow into the rivers. What can the government do if the people themselves don't understand the word 'pollution'? Historically, these rivers were considered sacred as their waters naturally had medicinal properties and higher oxygen levels than other rivers. But it's so sad that with the arrival of plastic and modern industries we have systematically killed these properties. Had these rivers been simply used for worship in the way our ancestors did, we wouldn't have seen this day. I feel very sad for my country's rivers. It took us a few decades to pollute the rivers that had been among the cleanest in the world for several millennia. What's more pathetic?

Around 600 people died by drowning in dirty and polluted Thames River during the Princess Alice Sunk. Thames at that time was the most polluted river in the world. If Ganga & Yamuna are polluted today, that doesn't mean it's gonna stay like this. Efforts are being done to clean it up. It took more than 20 years to clean the River Rhine and these rivers are way longer than Rhine & Thames.

We slauther them thousands on daily basis, meanwhile in India they let cows walk freely and they respect other living things also. We can learn so much from each other. DON'T JUDGE PEOPLE.
