One thing that needs to be stressed: this isn't just a problem of people drinking lots of soda because they like soda. This is a problem of people drinking soda because, for many, its all they have that's safe. This needs to be viewed as a water problem, not just a soda problem.

A lot of things can be blamed. Having traveled a bit in Mexico and currently traveling around here at the moment I think the main issue is the lack of education in rural areas and the fact that sugar is highly addictive. When you can choose between buying tasteless, boring water and a flavorful soda it's very easy to pick the last option, especially if you have to put in a bigger effort to find water since soda is so easily available.
Edit: I just finished the video and the lady at 12:39 is a perfect example of the ignorance that is killing all these people. Also the fact that they drink soft drinks at the funeral of someone who died of diabetes is really sad to see.
Edit: I love Mexico, I'm addressing a problem existing in the country, not a problem about the people or culture:) viva Mexico cabrones

My grandpa lived in Mexico City in the 60's. Coke was the only thing he drank at the time. Because that was his only source of water, eventually he went into renal failure and was given 2 months to live. The doctor made it very clear that it was the accumulation of the crap from the Coke in his body that caused his kidneys to shut down. Luckily, he was able to get through it and lived another 40 years, but his case is an example of the harm that Coke can do to the body.

I used to drink Coke in every meal plus some for refresment until I got my kidneys sick, nothing serious but man, the pain was so annoying and ever present that make me quit that stuff. Coke is rooted in Mexican culture, a glass of coke with ice is the first choice in the hot days of summer instead of a glass of water, even in the big cities where water is not an issue.

Soda is the one drink that's completely engineered for addiction...
It's laced with sugar for the craving, caffeine for the boost, carbonation for texture, color for aesthetics. The sugar makes you desire it again but also gives you a crash, the caffeine's 2nd prong is to dehydrate you to make you thirsty again and now, you want more soda to give fulfill the craving and to undo the crash and to quench your thirst which full circle makes you thirsty, low energy and desiring again. Other than that, it serves absolutely no purpose other than to be consumed. I doesn't fill you up because (again with the caffeine) you urinate it right back out, it doesn't provide any nutrients and it doesn't quench your thirst.

This is indeed an extremely serious problem, not just in Mexico, worldwide. I know myself that once i cut on soda drinks alone (all of them, not just Cola) the effects were immediate. You feel better, you lose weight your body reacts better and if you combine it with more daily activity (sports, walking etc) you are in general prone to have less problems in your life and will live (much) longer. These are all scientific facts and the more you start taking them into account the better it is for everyone. Obviously you can live a very healthy life eliminate all the bad stuff and still can fall ill for other life threatening diseases, but the fact that you can eliminate so many of the other threats and vastly improve the probability of living a normal length of life should be reason enough to take it seriously. I just wish healthier food wouldn't be as expensive at it is, especially in poorer states you can understand why some people go for the much cheaper fast food meal instead of the healthier which is 2-3 times more expensive almost anywhere in the world. That is another story too..

Lemonade and lemon soda or Mint Virgin mojito
    Fresh coco nut water
detox water with beetroot, mint, cucumber, etc

Coca Cola is heavily marketed in México, it's actually kind of interesting when you think about it. Mexicans are very family oriented people and coca cola has brand associations with closeness, sharing and togetherness among family and friends. I'm not saying it's good that Coca Cola is marketed so much there but that Mexican consumer habits and taste align exactly with how Coca Cola markets itself.

Very compelling documentary about Diabetes and Over Consumption of Sugar. We in America Complain of so many things and wish things were better but at least we do not have to contend with a basic need for clean water and proper sewage systems in our towns and citys. Those People truly jave a horrendous dilemma that has an easy answer however not a easy solution to the problem of a safe water and proper sewage system because of lack of funds to make it so.

@@tdh7865 muha ha ha again such a "nothing knower" (probably a bad translation of german to english).my friend.. Firstly, the coffine in coca cola makes NO DIFFERECE WHATSOEVER for the healthyness of sprite and coce in comparision. There is only an extreme low amount of coffine in coca cola. 8mg per 100ml! 8 mg! A coffe contains 50 mg per 100ml. And even coffee is healthy and everybody should 8 cops of it every day. And even if you drink 3 cans of it every day its still healthy. and even if it would not be even healthy, it would have had no relevance whatsoever in comparision to the effect of the extreme amount of sugar in sprite and cola. And that you talk about the addictiveness of coffeine, is the most absurd thing of all. The addictiveness of coffeine is in comparision to any other addictive stuff we know, nearly not existing. Even after 10 yeras of 3 cans of coffee. And even if it would be addictive, what is not the case in any relevant sense of the world ! it is great, because coffeine is eitherway healthy and so it makes you drink healthy drinks more often. (by the way sugar is also 100 times more addictive than coffeine xd) And even if it would be addictive (nearly not the case) and unhealthy (opposite is true), it wouldnt matter in the slightest in comparision to the effects of 11 g suger per 100 ml. to even think about the effects of 8 mg coffeine per 100ml cola as an argument for sprite is better than cola, is laughtable and stunning
people today know NOTHING about what they consume their hole day, how is that possible to be so IGNORANT about soft drinks.

I started making my own sodas by fermentation. Full of good micronutrients and probiotics, not even 1/5 as much sugar. Definitely recommend making your own ginger beer, blackberry soda, etc etc.

In 189os they marketed cigarettes for asthma. In 1950s Dr. were advertising Camel cigarettes for big Pharma. Nothing they put before us is to benefit us. The elect race continues to trust the elite race because people believe their people must have the same skin as them.

The best drink for the body is water. Always been, always will be. Drinking a small bottle a week is not necessarily bad for people with a normal health. 500 ml coke is a bout 210 calories. If these people drink 2 litres a day, it would be 880 calories in the soda ONLY. That is 282 240 calories a year. In coke ONLY!

Kind of like how it was in some parts of europe: water is harder to come by hence people turn to alcoholic beverages as it is cheaper.

I work as a musician for social events and it is always a bit of a struggle to get plain water. As soon as we arrive to the parties, our table is full of Coca, Sprite and mineral water. It is like a second nature, people drink it and buy it automatically, without much thought.
Thre's one thing though I'm not sure about, but it is said that you have to dink Coca every time you eat Pozole or Mole because drinking water can irritate your stomach, never happened to me though.

    • @Annie-eg9xc
      @Annie-eg9xc Před 3 měsíci

That’s obviously a lie. Your stomach won’t get irritated if you don’t drink coke while eating pozole 😂
You can always opt for mineral water which is just carbonated water without all the sugar and nasty chemicals.

This part of the culture. I live in the US and when I visit one of my aunts, the first things she offers me is a Coke, I instead ask her for water and EACH time she seems surpriced I prefer water. She has been living in the US for more than 40 year and says she find that offering water to be too little as if coke is a better option. When we sit to eat a meal, I am the only one drinking water, I want to model the right behavior.
    Yes, she is diabetic.

It's so sad, I'm from San Cristóbal and the video manage to explain the situation here with precision. I know many people who are diabetics but they simply don't care about their health and continue drinking Coca-Cola. Then they wonder why "all of a sudden" they're in the hospital.

Here on Brazil is the same thing. I remember one of my sister's birthday party with more than 25 people, my cousin was judged a lot for drinking water instead of coke. When I traveled to Rio to see some relatives, this time I was the one judged. They offered me soda on each and every meal I declined. It was a shock to them. They asked my a lot of questions regarding it and continue offering me anyway.
