  • We explore the compelling stories of the life that’s lived along their banks, encountering indigenous communities who dwell in harmony with rivers; modern traders, artists and artisans who make their living there; and vast metropolises which - now more than ever - depend on twenty-first century technologies to keep the ancient waters at bay.

It’s much more complicated than that. Only the lowest castes (Hindus say it doesn’t exist but does) are allowed to touch trash on the ground. Hindus throw their trash so the Dalit can clean up after which they try to do every night in cities but there is just too much trash. Fundamental changes need to be taught. India has a wonderful recycle program that the rest of the world should take sight of. Recycling affords millions of poor to work and be paid.
I have faith in the Indian people to work on this problem in the years to come. They are a very spiritual people and love their land. The hard part is going to be to teach the country side people. I am a North America citizen and I love India. My favorite country In The World. You got this my Indian brothers and sisters!! Unity to India!

It has to do with this idea that poo is impure and shouldn’t be anywhere near your home. This is why street and river pooping is done, at least from what I’ve been told. There is a whole caste of people who have historically been tasked with cleaning public poo. Britain really pushed this idea when India was a colony.

I visited the Ganges when on holiday back in 2003 and 2004. For a river that is classified as sacred in Hinduism, I found a completely opposite waterway. I went down to the river's edge - the water was a dark grey colour with all sorts of bits and pieces floating on the surface. But most of all it was absoluetly stinking. And yet there were many Hindus bathing and washing themsleves in this toxic river. Unbelievable!

The dissolved oxygen level upstream in river Ganga is 8.9 mg per litre while in the downstream it is 8.3 mg per litre. This clearly shows that water quality has improved significantly and is optimal for bathing."There has been 40-50 percent improvement in the quality of water in Ganga," Dr. PK Mishra, Professor at Chemical Engineering and Technology, IIT-BHU told ANI. the real-time water monitoring data of the CPCB, showed that out of the 36 monitoring units placed at various points of the Ganga river, the water quality around 27 points was suitable for bathing and propagation of wildlife and fisheries. Union water resources minister Nitin Gadkari said 70 to 80 per cent of the Ganga will be cleaned by the end of March 2020. Nearly Rs 26,000 crore are being spent on cleaning up the holy river that’s highly polluted earlier

People do NOT pour nay dirt of the river themselves. The river is polluted because of the sewage infrastructure built by a corrupt government. All of the industrial waste and sewage channels mix into the river. This cause 99% of the pollution. For decades, us people have pleaded the governments to clean up the holy river. Finally, the government is setting up 100s of sewage treatment plants in the cities through which the river passes. If unfiltered sewage is prevented from entering the river, it becomes pure.

Once I was in Haridwar. At the side of the Ganges I ordered a lemon soda. When the drink arrived in a glass it looked peculiar. Nevertheless I drank half of it, concluding the taste was not so good. And what I noticed too late was that the soda was in fact Ganges water, what the establishment took with bucket from the Ganges. I failed to put my fingers in my throat to my great regret. After this I had diarrhea, vomited and had fever for 10 days. With lots of trouble (weakness and fever) I managed to travel on to RIshikesh, where I received help from another traveler and where I stayed for a few days and consulted an Ayurvedic doctor. Than traveled to Mussouri, where they made kitchari (rice and mung beans cooked in dahi) for me to keep some strenght. OMG how sick was I. Another life lesson learned.

@Rose Maguire Please don't go for bottled water! The pollution by the bottles is tremendous. Carry your own bottle and fill it with filtered water. Today in India every hotel and guesthouse can provide you with filtered water. In the Himalayas springwater is also to be found. I live in Kashmir and I go to collect springwater; if that's not possible I "make" my own filtered water. Apart from this, as mentioned, I ordered sodawater and instead that place added Ganges water without my knowledge. So beware, this can happen in India. Incredible ndia.

@nl3gq There was lemon in it, but the water was Ganges water and not soda. In India the most peculiar things happen, you cannot always be totally alert if you don't know what to expect. That's also the challenge of India. If you tell something about India the opposite is also true. For Indian Hindus Ganges water is sacret despite the fact that the Ganges is among the most polluted rivers on earth. At Haridwar the Ganges looks quite clear (unlike in Benares), so that's why I saw too late that it was that water that was in my glass.

I studied in Varanasi in the 80's from West Indies
There's so much of greatness in every aspect of Indian culture, science and ancient civilization yet such blind beliefs from it
India is a land of extremes
Religion, traditions, science culture , and modern thinking
I can't yet grasp why so many Indians are stuck in the same old , same old lifestyle
The past and present are contradictions with each other
These same strengths and the very same weaknesses
India is full of complexities , contradictions , sometimes exactly what's enslave them
They're in conflict with themselves, an east vs west mentality
Some of these very religious, cultural and traditions must be evaluated and trashed out , some must be changed
Example, religious practices on rivers , hygiene and science , ancient religious beliefs should be questioned and rationalized with modern day facts , such blind beliefs and coming to terms with the past and present, and not let religion influence their politics so much
The world is a global village, we much change to keep up with world yet keep one's identity
Some of these ancient practices are keeping India back from progressing by universal standards
The filthy practices must change especially affecting their rivers
"The holy river is not pure"
The over population , bad politics, many religious practices and survival of the masses in modern times are cancerous to India , a once great civilization .

I mean this sarcastically but also as food for thought for those who understand Hinduism's philosophical context - The river 'herself' is a deity so the pollution of her waters is a problem on the temporal plane and not on the spiritual one. If the river is considered to be epitome of a purifying force, its superpower is understood to take infinite amounts of pollution, both chemical and sins. Therefore, it does not bother the Hindu believers. Secondly, the river's chemical pollution ultimately harms living beings and not the water itself. If living beings fall ill or die due to a dip in the river, the river will only be considered a divine cause of their liberation from the cycle of birth and death and it will not be seen as an eye opener that the river must be kept pure so that living beings stay safe while using it. My point is pollution of Ganga and its status as a Holy River is not a contradiction in terms. A common believing mind will easily reconcile the two. Enlightened beings such as true sages, saints, etc would however disagree. But few commoners are able to practice what the saints strive for.

This is old documentary, things have changed now ganga is much cleaner than before due to number of sewage treatment plants constructed in the banks of river and its banned to dispose off rubbish in ganga ghats. Now ganga ghats are beautified with more new construction and in some parts, old illegal constructions are demolished to make more spacious and tourist friendly
