    While we're growing our Monstera deliciosa or many other aroid plants such as Philodendron, Anthurium, Syngonium, Pothos, and more, you may start to see things growing out of the side of stems. What are these things, what are they for, and what can you do with them? In this video I describe what these aerial roots are for, how they help the plants grow in nature, and I give four different solutions of what you can do with your to achieve your houseplant goals. I have two huge monstera plants next to each other. I took the aerial roots and formed them into peace signs. Then. I took my trailing dolphins and wrapped them around the aerial roots. It's so cool!

    My big, old monstera is getting very, very thick aerial roots that want to grow across the room. You can't bend them without breaking them. So that i don't have to dance a limbo, i let them grow through a flexible cable tube made of polyester fabric. So I could guide them directly into the pot without detours. That worked great! ^^

    Very helpful video! I inhereted a Monstera a few years ago from my dad, but had concluded it was not a Monstera because the leaves never had fenestrations. Then I happened upon an old photo of him sitting near the same plant and it had MANY fenestrations, and the leaves were much larger. That's when I deduced the plant needs more light than I was giving it.

    What if I have all my aerial roots going into another pot with soil but now want to cut them ? Is that ok ? Or do I need to take them out of the extra pot and bury them into the main pot , like you said in this video?

    • @plantvibrations
      @plantvibrations  Před 7 měsíci

      It is likely that they have started growing roots into the secondary pot so if you cut them now it may be a bit traumatic to your plant and worth burying them into the main pot. That said, if its too challenging to do that, it may be traumatic to cut them off but it won't kill it

    Can you grow a whole new monstera from a well-rooted areal root? For instance once it has a bunch of roots of the end of the aerial root, then cut off the aerial root from the monstera and plant it and maybe it would start growing leaves?

  • @NamelessNancy1312
    @NamelessNancy1312 Před 23 dny

    i see this video is a year old by the time ive seen it - but- the pole should be on the same side of the plant the arial roots are coming from, so they grow into it for support. The way youre using is it for angle correction and your tie off points in the petole might be stressing the plant into growing off kilter bc youre only supposed to tie off using the main spine of the plant. HOWEVER youre advice about the ariel roots is pretty good.

  • @aspirativemusicproduction2135
    @aspirativemusicproduction2135 Před 3 měsíci +1

    I stick all the roots into the pot. Nothing else makes more sense. No moss poles. No nonsense. All the roots grow into the soil as normal roots and provide the plant with stability and nutrients. I don't know why would anyone do otherwise.

  • @AmberWiest
    @AmberWiest Před měsícem

    I also used pool noodles, cut a vertical slit in them, and made holes in the side using a screw driver. I attached the aerial roots inside the holes. The aerial roots can keep growing and they have oxygen within the pool noodles. So you don't see the aerial roots.

    I'm thinking you might be able to place a new pot on a shelf half way up the wall. Then you put all the roots past that point in to that pot. So once the monstera has grown too tall and you need to cut it, you already have an entire root system established for the upper part.

    I don't think I would have enough room to have all these extra pots to nowhere. I thought I could cut off whose areal roots but that would probably be
    really bad. I may just try and control where they grow and partially tie them to the trunk or hide them behind the big leaves.

  • @seanpaulcurran
    @seanpaulcurran Před rokem +1

    I know that this is not related to this video here, but I did notice that your monstera appears to be sitting in an indirect light corner. I had to move my plant today from my bay view window (non direct sunlight) to my desk - and I am wondering if the plant is going to not be happy with the move. The exciting news (why I did it) is because the plant out grew the window area.
    So my question is - is it OK to place my plant in a low lit corner without indirect sunlight? or do I need to get it back near indirect sun?

    • @plantvibrations
      @plantvibrations  Před rokem +1

    why are you adding two syllables to 'use' all the time. You aren't writing a scientific paper and the common use of both 'use' and utilise' means the same, you're just making work for you and the listener. It doesn't make you seem smarter to waste time and energy on two meaningless extra syllables.
