Aerial Roots Basics | Why They Grow and How To Use Them To Our Advantage!

  • In this episode I explain the different types of roots that an epiphytic aroid (your philodendron, monstera, epipremnum, rhaphidophora etc…) produces in different stages of its life cycle. These roots are not only epiphytic, allowing the plant to climb up to access better light, but are advantageous as they can also be propagated readily. Finally, I share some tips on managing aerial roots on an existing plant or their function during propagation.

    My fav thing I’ve seen a plants aerial root latch on was a dry towel that was near it on my bathroom plant shelf. It was a surprising big strong aerial root. Made me wonder if I could somehow use that information 😂 my adansonii loved that towel.

    Thank you so much. At least I know what happened to my friend's Calathea Orbifolia ( or Alocasia , I am not sure) . There's a big oval bud grows from the centre of the plant and strong aerial root as well (from the bottom of the bud) . I am now waiting for what will happen。YOur channe is very helpful and beautiful plants too.

Im just a bit busy with life stuff 🥹 I do have a 2 episodes related to fertilizing. Type in “onlyplants fertilize” on the search bar and you should see them. Theres no short answer or formula to fertilizing… you kinda go by instinct and reading abit about them. Different fertilizers and pros and cons… which only you can decide for your unique environment and care level 😀

    Question ? I have just cut the top of a type of philo about 5 feet. I cut pieces below the nodes cutting the top in several sections. Planted in soil to root, but what to do with the aerial roots while rooting. Should I cut them off or leave them. Thanks for your help.

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  Před rokem

      Depends… too long and the aerial roots have more surface area to rot.
      Also if they are damaged or dried out best to cut it to a shorter manageable length

    I've had a pothos in a bottle of water for about 8months, still a small plant with very thin roots (all roots submerged in water) but can I revert it to aerial roots?
    I want to basically try the Kratky system, have the plant in a small container with holes and pumice stones and then let the roots grow into aerial roots and then back into the water, but I worry the roots will dry up before it reaches the water below as they're currently water roots.

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  Před rokem +1

      Oooh the water roots may not do so well in the air… perhaps if you transition the moisture slowly over time it can turn into solid air roots. You may do so with moss that you keep lightly moist but fluffy and airy. Let the moss dry out more and more in between sprays over time.

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  Před 2 lety +1

      Oooh no the woody roots will rot very easily. If you must, cut most of it off leaving only about 7 inch of it. And i would only water propagate it as soil propagation may rot easily.
      But the safest way though… would be to air layer it 😀

    I have aerial roots like crazy on my P.P.P., I’d realllyyy like to chop and prop. Im told its supposed to help the plant not die/rot, and instead grow roots. But wouldn’t they rot in water ? And don’t aerial roots not take in water when in the soil, due to the fact they are meant to just attach to other plants to climb ?

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  Před 2 lety +1

      Aerial roots can turn into water roots, and can also turn into soil roots in soil, it can also turn woody and inert, in which case this will rot if you propagate. I have a video titled “aerial roots” that kinda explains it 😀😀
