Tradescantia Nanouk care and propagation

- The tradescantia nanouk (wandering jew) is a difficult to grow plant that propagates very easily. Yes, that statement sounds contradicting but in this video I explain why the care is a bit challenging (bottomline: they rot too easily). I explain the growth pattern and explain (with visuals) why this is a plant you have to keep pruning and propagating to keep it healthy and beautiful. It is easiest to propagate them straight into soil, but I show you how you can also propagate them in water. I also dabble with a bit of leca/semi-hydro in one of my propagates.

My name is nanouk and i never heard about this plant before. thanks for sharing
Whoaaa nice to meet you Nanouk. Its a great name.
Why ! good looked ! Thank you
I can’t believe I never thought to use a pencil to start a hole for the cuttings. I usually just use my finger and make a huge mess. Great video! Thanks for all the tips!
I use a chopstick that i received when i ordered Bonsai Jacks Gritty Mix for cacti and succulents.
I thought I was the only person using a pencil !
I use a round wooden ice lolly stick. I wash them and save them after eating the ice lolly they are so useful, even to use as stakes to keep a plant in position.
Anything thin will do! I dont throw away disposable wooden chopsticks. Great for digging holes n propping up short plants 😆
I don't have pencils but I have chopsticks and they work.
You did explain just like a PROF. No one ever did this. Thank You for all Your help. Well done.
Thank you. Wow what a compliment
I found a small nanouk plant at my grocery store on clearance for only $2.49 so I’m excited to help it grow into a large beautiful plant
Did it grow?
@@elyace it grew crazy good and fast at first and I even started propagating it to make new plants. But then it started dying and I couldn’t figure out why. All my other plants are doing well.
@@strawberryrhubarbpie Thanks I'm planning to buy one soon.
@@strawberryrhubarbpiehave you give them enough fertilizer?
i just found one for 2.99! i’m praying she lives and grows strong
I bought a tradescantia zebrina. About a year ago and it has grown so much I have propagated it over and over and over again I've given it away to so many people my mailman my delivery guy anybody that comes to my house leaves with a tradescantia zebrina LOL I have a few others and I love how quickly they grow and their little flowers are so cute thank you for this video. I wasn't sure about getting one of these but thanks to you I think I'm going to try it. I was on the fence about lecca but now I think you have made up my mind for me I don't think I'm going to try it I've got a few hundred dollars invested in my plants not only that but my heart is invested in my plants also so I don't want to take a risk of losing any of them. I think I'll stick with what I know thank you very much I look forward to watching more of your videos you're a great guy.
Thank youuu. That is so sweet that you give away plants. Im not that generous haha
Thanks for this video! For tradescantia there are so many wrong care instructions. I found it most happy when I forgot to water it, haha. I think we can't say enough times that this plant hates to be overwatered. Most other tradescantia varieties are the same. Just got a tiny cutting of this species at a local plant nursery in Berlin and I hope it will thrive. 🌿💚
Whoaa good luck with it. They like it very bright
For Tradescantia Sillamontana, it’s essential to keep the roots dry. I grow them under white LED lights and managed to propagate successfully.
Feed them with a diluted seaweed fertilizer and they are thriving. I dip the stem in rooting hormone first and put them in a glass jar with the tips submerged in 2-3 mm of water only. Top up when the jar is almost dry. It will grow roots in about 7-10 days. After that I grew them in a cactus potting mixture with 20% sand to prevent root rot. So far , I haven’t encountered root rot yet. I use the same method for the Nanouk.
Sweet, thank you!
This video took months to make. Thank you for waiting and showing us authentic results! Subscribed!
😀 welcome to the channel!
I was definitely giving mine a little too much care… lol didn’t realize how easy this plant is to take care of! Thank you! Subscribed! ❤
❤️❤️
Your yard is straight out of a magical forest!! Thanks for the video!
Great video Sean! Tradescantia are a lot of fun. You’re right they’re sensitive to being overwatered and leaves will crisp up when they receive too much water (making us think that they’re dehydrated and want more water). Especially the varieties with very thick succulent stems/leaves like Nanouk and the Sillamontana (the fuzzy one). The Sillamontana is a desert species, it enjoys a fast draining airy soil mix, lower humidity and drying out between waterings. They can get leggy with longer internodes if they’re not receiving enough bright light/sunlight. More light will keep the plant looking fuller with more leaves, shorter internodes. It looks like you’re doing an awesome job with your babies. ☀️🌱
Thank youuuu. The Sillamontana is so adorable I cant wait for it to grow. Its a bit slower than the other tradescantias.
I didn't know this. Mine has a few crispy leaves and I just bottom watered it again (it's too dense to water it from top down). What are the signs of underwatering a tradescantia nanouk?
Thanks for your comment. You helped me a lot. 🪴💚
I have a Purple Tinge. It's not doing as well as I hoped. It's a small plant, in a 2" grow pot. Some of the leaves are kind of crinkley looking and the plant itself looks like bit sad. It is by a window, don't know the direction. Any suggestions?
wow thank you I was wondering why they looked dry
I just got one for Christmas so happy to learn about this beautiful plant.
Yay you talked about Tradescantia Nanouk. I love mine so much! It's so pink and pretty. 💕
I bought my trandescantia nanouk last fall. Although the growth rate is very slow I’m happy that it survived the harsh Canadian winter. Can’t wait for the real summer to be here so I can move it outside. Now that I watched your video, I’ll try to propagate and hopefully I’ll have a bountiful growth. Terima kasih Sean.
😀
They do great outside in Canada!
Great video, I got a small one 6 months ago and I have already gotten 5 plants from the little guy. One of the easiest plants to grow and makes great gifts.
I just bought this plant a few weeks ago and have been scouring the web looking for tips, do's and don'ts and this has been the most helpful and informational video I've come across! Thank you for sharing!
i've got one in a big hanging basket at home. It's been in the unheated lean-to conservatory, which regularly gets down to 1-2'c in winter, and the thing is bullet proof!! In fact I must have only watered it around 4 times between november and april. Also, the colour is vivid bright pink and the growth habit is compact too (must be the cold)
I did the same thing. Found one of these pieces in my flowers I purchased . Didn’t realize how fast the roots start growing after propagating it. Quite a surprise!
Yes they are good for building confidence in propagating
Thank you for showing how easy it really is. You show everything you need to know to prop and give to friends :) such a beautiful plant. I love the reverted green one also. 😍
Just ordered one and found this video! Truly do appreciate your content and knowledge!
Thank you so much!! I have been looking for a video to propagate this variation and your time lapse was incredibly helpful. Again thank you!
Thank you so much! I'm a complete novice and wanting to get one of these, but I was lacking confidence that I could keep it healthy. Now I feel like I have enough information to try! This is such a great, wholesome content - thank you again!
Good luck!
I got a Nanouk off the discount rack. When I first saw it I thought it was on the discount rack cuz the poor thing had obviously been dropped of his head. I took him home thinking maybe my mom could help me nurse him only to discover that he was in much worse shape than I thought. He was getting bad root rot and we had to get rid of most of the plant, but he’s now growing back very well and sharing his pot with a Zebrena actually.
Just picked one of these up at my grocery store for $6. Love it!
Thank you for sharing all of the updates! It was cool to see how the cuttings were doing over time. Also, now I am inspired to trim and replant my Tradescantia-Purple Queen!
Μυ Tradescantia-Purple Queen is very tough always in bright light and 4-5 hours in direct sunlight
Thank you, this video helped me a lot! I got my tradescantia nanouk yesterday and I love her so much!
Really appreciate the followup videos to the propagation!! Thank you
Love to propagate these, it is so satisfying! Super fun for kids too. Great teaching tool.
Very thorough video. I found it helpful as I started mine from a cutting, and it rooted in water very quickly. I will try propagation again to fill out my pot as well.
Just got mine today as a Valentine's Day gift from my family. So glad found your informative video! Thank you!
Whoaaaa nice. They like it very bright and propagate often to maintain a lush look
Lovely!!! I’m very new in planting and I just bought Tradescantia plant this week without knowing how to take care or propagate it, just because it’s so pretty. Found your video at the right time. So, Thank you. I also focused on your background plants… they all look so healthy!! ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks for the insight. My wife grew up in Indonesia. We both enjoy your help.
So cool that you both are into plants 🙂
So helpful! Just bought one for 13 dollars. I hope it does well, it caught my eye immediately
It’s a beautiful plant and I love the pink purple color! Thank you for the tips.
You are correct Sean.
The plant at 17.00 is a Tradescantia spathacea tricolour. Aka roheo tricolour or boat lily or Oyster plant.
My mom had bought me one from the grocery store and it just kept growing and growing, my husband walked by one day and accidently broke off a piece so I put it in a cup of water and it rooted in a couple of days! I've now taken off a couple of clippings and theyre doing amazing, the first plant ive ever had that I didn't need to look up care for ☺ I'm here today because I wasn't sure if it should be growing upward or hanging, thanks for this amazing video ❤
Itll hang eventually haha but it will always have balding tops so give them hard prunes 😀
This video is the reason why I officially wanted to become a plant mom! I’ve had my little Luna for a year, it’s been thru so much but she is strong and thriving so many compliments when they see her, thank you!!!!!
Happy to hear! 😀
I reaaaalllllyyyy like your energy. I'm watching for the vibes
Thanks, Patrick for darling my interest in tradescantia!
I love that you include the updates already. Keep up the great work. I looove love your videos
Thank youu
Love the video! Tradescantia is a beautiful plant! Just today I propagate mine! 💛 Thnks for the tips!! 🙌🏼
I’ve had my Nanouk for two weeks and I’ve just propagated two of her biggest leaves in the soil, wish me luck!!! I’m so scared she’s my favorite plant. 😭❤️❤️
Awwww… I have a feeling they will take off. They are quite easy to propagate
wonderful video. I had my nanouk in very large pots and they started to rot, so I repotted in several smaller pots and voila! so much better.
Thank you so.much Sean! Very informative video. I love the colours of the leave. Was trying to save my plant as they not doing well. Your video came juz in time.🥰
Good morning and thank you for sharing the amazing video the plant is very beautiful have a blessed day
Mine started very small (I got it as a gift almost a year ago) and it has gotten huge! I stumbled upon this video while trying to figure out how to properly do a cutting. I have never done it before but you make it look so easy and I am not nervous anymore. I learned a lot from you and I just subscribed. Thank you!!😄
Thank youuu, try both water and soil propagation. Dont worry the mama plant will branch out quickly after the cut
Great information.
We live in a hillsides of west Canada and the climate is very dry. My nanouk is 100% same color as yours. I never knew how easy it's to propagate actually, untill I just saw it, I'm definitely will make few cuttings to plant it back and make it look a bit bushier.
Thank for your video.
I learnt something new about the string in leca ... Thank you 😘
Thank you, just received one as a gift and needed to know how to properly take care of it.
So glad to see you trying out leca! I love it. And my nanouk is so happy in leca! 💚
Ive got a bunch of other plants in leca too. I like it when its in the right vessel 🤓
@@onlyplants , what vessels do you recommend?
I'm digging your video. I am surprised at how expensive they are in Indonesia. I found these for the first time and bought two 3 inch pots for $3.00 US. It's thriving but does grow much more slowly than my other transcandantias.
Great detailed video on propagating - I love my nanouk! Bought it with a lot of pink but some leaves had already gone green. May transfer them off to another pot. Have been thinking of propagating it for a while now but wasn’t sure.. will do so now I know the best way thanks! 😊👏🙏
There’s not too many videos on this plant! Thanks for the awesome care tips. I was sold an over watered pot of nanouk that rotted in no time, but now I restarted with one single cutting. Fingers crossed it thrives 😁
Ps: cool wrist tattoo!!
Thank you! Good luck on that cutting, hope you end up with a colony of them
Another of my favourites, I will leave mine till it warms up in Spring, then start propagation as it's leggy, want a nice full plant like yours.
👍 I wanted to propagate mine and here you are with this great video! Thanks so much! Also, I didn't know Nanouk could revert. 👀
I just bought one of these the other day. It caught my eye right away and had to have it. I've also visited Bali a few times. It was my favorite place to visit in Asia.
Yayee ❤️
I love the color of tradescantia so beautiful.
i love your tutorials. so clear and easy to understand. thank you!
Thank youu
I’ve been waiting for this one!
Thank you.
Hi Sean!
I just got a pot of tradescantia nanouk and loving all this information from this video.
Really loving the rich purple-pink on the underside of the leaves and hoping with this info from your video it will fare well under my 'care'.
❤🌱🌸
Good luck! It needs more light and less water than most people think but dont let it dry out too much. The roots are so thin they cant handle drought 😀
Thank you so much for your vlog. Was able to save my nanuok in time. Followed your advices. Keep safe and healthy
😀😀
I binge watched a lot of your videos, when I bought this plant I knew you were the guy to teach me their care!!!❤ thank you so much!!!🥰
Haha thank you ❤️
Tnx for information. Loved this plant. Never saw it before until I got a .plant at my doctor's office.
Yay thanks for the video cos I just got my own nanouk! I am obsessed with trandescantia hehe :) that pink one at the end is T. spathacea.
For my T. sillamontana, I just leave it hanging under a tree where it gets a lot of bright light. These are actually grown the same way as succulents here in the Philippines. I barely water it and just let the rain handle it and each stem is almost a foot long! I should probably propagate it like you have done here with your nanouk. So inspiring honestly cos im usually anxious when it comes to propagating my fave plants hahaha
mine is by far my fastest grower. I keep it right in front of a south window. I've recently moved it into a propagation box so I can grow it even more
Ayer compré esta hermosa planta, gracias por este video tan útil, amo las plantas y me intereso por saber cómo cuidarlas
Thank God for this video. I thought i needed to keep her soul moist at all times
Awesome video. I just purchase one of these and learned a lot from the propagation content🤗
I’m so glad I found this I’ve had this plant for a few months and it grew like a weed and the taller stems are too long to stand up now and are just hanging out of the pot lol 😂 time to give her a little trimmy trim 💖
I love this plant going to add this to my collection Insha Allah today💗
Thank you, I learned a lot from you. Now I want this plant. Never had this type of plant 🪴. Thank you again
Your video just popped while I was searching information on Tradescantia. Subscribed. I gained so much confidence on propagation after watching your video. Going try the water propagation maybe on next two weeks. Will come back with the result. Thank you so much. Love your Channel.
Thank you so much, welcome to the channel. Our journey have just begun 🙌🏻
I saved this video because I told myself that one day I will definitely own this beautiful plant. Low and behold, my dad recently gifted me this plant without knowing I've been wanting one and I'm so happy.
Haha sweet. Take cuttings if you can. This plant is far easier to propagate than to acclimatizr
@@onlyplants I will for sure!
Thank you very much for explaining details. I just bought this plant at the Lowe’s I think I’m going to love it.
Propagate often. They will look so gorgeous when they are bushy 😀
Great Video, Thanks . I have mine just like yours in my Room next to the window and also at Night I turn on the Growing Lights for them and more Stems coming up from the Soil. is amazing ,Grateful Plant.
Great timing, I just got one for Christmas 🎄 😀
I just ordered one of these from Etsy! I am very excited to get it and see what I can do with it!
i like your video. i love seeing the results of the growth!
Very informative! I had no idea why my plant is dying but now I know that I’m probably overwatering it.
Could also be insufficient light. They are quite thirsty when given good light.
@@onlyplants I have two varieties of this plant and I couldn’t understand why it was dying. I’m over watering it 😭 I’ll be leaving it alone from now on
Thank you mas Shawn, baru beli tanaman ini dan langsung nyari cara propagandain, karena beli udah rimbun dan warnaya ungu cantik.. will see for next few weeks :) seems very easy to grow
i really enjoyed this. I just bought a nanouk and had it outside in a warm climate in a southwestern exposure. i think it was getting too much bright direct light (4 hours a day) so after watching your video i put in in a more dappled area. I like your voice--very calming.
Ooo they do like a bit of direct light. One way you can tell if its not getting enough light may be losing of variegation. So keep an eye out for the color in case its in too low of a light.
This is my favourite variety of Tradescantias. I like it growing straight and the bright colours. Absolutely beautiful. And yes, overwatering is a problem for this variety, even though Tradescantias are the best plants especially for beginners, as they grow so easy and fast 💜 Thanks for the video, Sean.
Yayyeee
Great video, thanks for sharing your knowledge!
I was gifted one this past december so thank you for this very very helpful video!!!
😀😀
16:53 You're right, it is a tradescantia, it is called Tradescantia spathacea (Rhoeo discolor / tricolor). I just love it!
My first tn died on me. Now I understand why. Thank you so much for this tutorial. I am going back to the nursery for a second tn.
And to be brave enough to make cuttings for continuous propagation.
BTW I have just discovered this channel and have been learning superbly from all the tutorials. All the best and sending you to your 100k subscribers soon.
Thank youuu welcome to the channel 🙌🏻
Great video! So informational and thank you for following up on the cuttings :)
love your video ! very informative with updates 😊👍🏻 thank you so much
wow I learned something new about this plant thank you
I absolutely love them and I am so happy I have found what makes them happy after loosing so many I was determined to continue buying them until I found the suitable condition. appreciate your advice so helpful for this type of plant
They do brighten up our spirits 😀
Paused this video to chop up my guy. He had 3 tall stems. Just made him bushier. Thank you for the info
Whoaa nice! Hope they take off
Luv tradescantia varieties. No nanouk yet but hopefully I will get a cutting 😁🌿🌱💚
Beautiful Wandering Jew Plant.
Muchas gracias por la información era justo lo que buscaba ver.
Thank you, this was very timely for me! Tradescantia are one of my faveoraite, and I have many varieties( including Nanuk) in my care. They need to be cut and propagated but I've been scared with the more fuzzy, and variegated ones as you stated fail rate is high. I can forge ahead with it today with more confidence, ty for the motivation. Stay well my friend!
It's rather late I realize for a response but,For plants that are harder to propagate through cuttings or if you just plain have bad luck with cuttings air layering can be a pretty effective alternative with a fairly high success rate. If you're like me you want as many to survive as possible anyway😅
I just got a unrooted cutting of a nanouk! Really excited to try and get it to root!
I love your garden.
Really nice plant , ang bilis pla mag dami.
Glad I found this video! Now I know to be careful not to over water
.. hello, good to have come across your channel .. I absolutely love the quality of the plants growing .. you are something yourself ✌🏻

Over the last, say .. 3/4yrs I have accumulated several house plants .. they have been happy an doing well .. I finally have dove into committing to a higher level .. so anyways, nice to ‘meet’ you lol

take it easy an I’m sure I’ll be commenting an asking very soon .. I have dove in an pruned, reported an propagated at least 4 plants today (oh an saved a few I forgot about in the kitty room lol) but hey, i apologized, an have bonded with the plants today, so worth it, right!?

Thanks Sean! You make slow growing plants grow fast!
These guys grow like weed haha I don’t even know what to do with them and more
@@onlyplants I just bought one last week and as soon as I got home I reviewed your video about Nanouk. I want to give out cuttings to friends but scared to cut some. I’ll give it more time to feel at home then, I’ll follow your instructions.
