I just got back from a couple of weeks in Harar, Ethiopia. I am Ethiopian by origin and love love love going there to see my family and friends. This is my fourth time in Ethiopia. I decided to book this holiday when I found out my cousin was getting married. I just HAD to experience an authentic Harari wedding in Harar - I couldn't miss out.
I will be splitting this Travel Diary into a few parts (maybe three), just to make it shorter to watch but there's LOTS more to come in the next part of this series. This first part is quite broken up and I've just thrown in bit and bobs from my first week. I attended a wedding of another family member during my first week.
The Harari culture is so detailed and quite overwhelming for someone like me, coming from a background where there are no Hararis in London. I will be publishing a blog post soon on all the new cultural aspects that I have learnt during my time here soon.
Hope you enjoy and make sure to subscribe to see the next few parts!

it’s because it’d trade and cultural ties with India, the Arabian peninsula and the rest of the world several centuries ago. Check this out: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harar

Oh this is so cooooool. I actually thought you were Somali because I saw you at the Somali Awards thingy a while back. Harar looks beautiful. It looks a lot, lot, lot like Somalia, which I guess makes sense as we're basically neighbours. Culture and stuff is also very similar. Love it!

Ethiopia has something like 80 ethnic groups and languages, and they are all veryyyy different. So the language the original people from Harar speak, is Harari (or called Gey sinan). It isn't written or read, just spoken. It is very heavily Arabic, but also has some Amharic in it too.

Such a beautiful city with a very long history especially considering I'm somali and we have had a long close relationship and alliance with the hararis who were a major part of the somali Ifat and Adal sultanates where harar was even made the capital city of Adal at one point..i hope when Somalia retakes their territories in the ogaden region whenever that maybe harar joins to become part of Somalia as hararis have a closer history and relationship with somalis than the amharas and tigrays who have historically been the enemies of hararis somalis and afars..don't forget the most important historical attraction in harar (the jugol wall) was built by the emir of harar Nur Ibn Mujahid Al dhuhi suha who was a a somali commander from the marehan subclan of the darod clan..He built the wall as he was often away with his armies fighting the abyssinians and he wanted to protect the inhabitants of the city from the encroaching oromos whilst he and the army were away in jihad. .such a warrior, noble man and a caring ruler who looked after his people the somalis hararis and afars in harar. .before him was another somali commander Imam Ahmed Ibn Ibrahim Al ghazi who moved the capital of Adal sultanate from zeila in Somalia to Harar and from there launched a major attack on the abyssinians who had killed imam mahfuz the harari commander of Adal ..Ahmed gurey would go on to defeat all the Ethiopian armies and conquer all of abyssiniania in what would be known as Futuh al Habash (conquest of abyssinia) and even defeat the Portuguese reinforcements sent by the brother of Vasco Da Gama. .In this war somalis would become the first to use cannon and matchlock technology in warfare in all of Africa ..such beautiful and medieval history somalis and hararis share mashallah. .Abadir Umar Rida the patron saint of harar is also the founding father and ancestor of the somali sheikhaal clan..He was also the founder of the somali Walashma Dynasty which was the royal house of both the Sultanate of Ifat and the Sultanate of Adal

The common ground b/n Somali and Hararis are they both suni Muslims and share Islamic words. As African they sometimes look alike but Somali is part of the cushitic branch of the Afro-Asian family and Harari is strictly Semitic.

A Ra Im Sheekhal somali clan. Google it We share same Father ibn rayda. We are both known as Hararis. nU Abyssinians have no shame as u have unhealthy look on anything related to Somali. I blve ur lot are allergic 2-The Word Somali. So let me give you More of it. Hit Dhankil Plateau is Known as Somali Plateau, Opposite is the Somali Sea, And Horn of Africa is Known as Somali Peninsula. Enough. Now ask your professor's why that is. Lastly Cushitic is Ethiopian not Semitic. I think ur mistaken Middle east for Africa...Peace...
