Have they gone too far? - Dragon Shield Outer Matte Sleeves (Triple Sleeves) Review

- We LOVE Double-sleeving, clearly, but is it REALLY worth it to chuck another layer of plastic around your cards? We put that to the test.
All the facts, all the information, none of the bias.
Dragon Shield decided to up the protection game by producing the Dragon Shield Outer Matte Sleeves as a triple sleeve option for your cards. Although organisation is mentioned on their website, that is unlikely to be a realistic use for these sleeves. If you want more protection, invest in better inner and outer sleeves before buying another layer of plastic.

Time for Quad sleeving
Outer sleeves have existed for a while now in Japan since most Art Sleeves are garbage but at the same time, they're collectible. Broccolli, KMC, Yankoman have been the most popular. Outer sleeves are meant for double sleeving not triple sleeving. Regular art sleeve is your inner sleeve and these are the outer sleeves.
This is a new world for us as we've not reviewed this kind of sleeve before. They are advertised as triple sleeves on their box so we went more in that direction but the comments talking about art sleeves make a lot of sense.
@@DoubleSleeved Dragon shield markets this way since they are the only ones that make art sleeves unlike the other outer sleeve manufacturers like the brushed art and those are great. So to them their art sleeves don’t need added protection. Anime sleeves though are typically horrible to the point you can’t even shuffle properly. CFV, DBZ, Digimon have great art but sleeves are crap. These fix that issue.
@@DoubleSleeved He is right, in asia if you use art sleeves you would use an outer sleeve since they will get damaged easiey and you would have to get rid of them in comps. I use a inner in almost all my decks so I have to "triple" sleeve my decks now but if its cards games I don't have inners I just use double with the art + outer. I think most people would prefer hard outer sleeves since you need them to protect that art inside to make sure they don't crark
Na ive always triple sleeved... Dragon shield resealable inners, then whatever art sleeve u wanna use and then dragon shield outer sleeves... I wanted my cards to be as protected as possible mainly cause i hate dirty cards/sleeves... And i only double/triple sleeve modern and legacy decks and only triple sleeve my full modern decks. But obviously anyone can sleeve however they want and way is comfortable for them.
That's interesting. I wonder then why dragon shield doesn't have clear both sides outer sleeves like these for triple sleeving, Or as you say here it's double sleeving, but the art is the inner sleeve. And these are the outer you think you'd want full clear, not mat?
Thank you for being the first review on CZcams for this product! I'm getting mine in a few days; I've been triple-sleeve shuffling for a decade now and from your feedback, I'm excited to jam this into my competitive Commander! :)
Awesome! A real life triple-sleever! I'm sure you'll love them! ☺️
Hi, Yu-Gi-Oh player here, these sleeves are really helpful since a lot of official Konami & Character Card Sleeves are trash quality so we need to often Double or Triple sleeves not to protect the card but the sleeves itself (considered most of the time collectibles too)
This is something we learnt very quickly. Thank you for your thoughts and opinions 😁😁
Nice review! I know you weren't sold on triple sleeving but as others have mentioned, I'd be interested in seeing more of your detailed reviews on outer sleeves for the purposes of double sleeving art sleeves to protect the art and improve shufflability 😊
Thank you. Clearly this is a popular sleeving strategy, I may do a short video on it, we will see. I fear that most of the info will be similar but I'm sure I can test a few things. ☺️
I think what I love these for the most is archiving, being able to triple sleeve and then put into the binder. Some of your more valuable cards for display really helps protect them during binder page flips and makes them more rigid and even better yet, triple sleeve than in a top loader. I mean like Hellman that can survive a nuclear winter.
Thanks for the detailed overview!
For more detail it would have been interesting to know how they feel to shuffle, not just durability, but holding such a thick deck.
Also on regular 60 card decks, as you only tested for 50, which I guess maybe is interesting for commander players.
We test 50 just due to the size. It is very hard to shuffle but they feel just like dragon shield Mattes. Definitely lovely sleeves but so big and thick! 😊
Hi, Digimon tcg player here that wanted to check to see if these were good.
I usually buy the KMC sleeves with the gold and silver borders for decks usually because there’s so many art sleeves I enjoy that just don’t have the durability of Dagon shield but most of those only come in packs of 50 or 60.
Plus, there isn’t that much choice so it’s nice to see another company get into it. Especially one that has a good reputation like Dragon shield.
Nice. This is a great take. Thank you for sharing. We are dragon shield fans for sure. KMC have been on a journey, hopefully they can regain some stability and product more good stuff.
i was looking at them to get to get that matte shuffle feel on my old sleeves
I don't think we've gone far enough. Sealable inner sleeve, color sleeve, outer sleeve, top loader, snap case, PSA graded, and this is to go even further beyond!!
Bullet proof, cement block, steel cage, suspended on a vat of stable jelly! We can make the best protected card of all time! 😆
@@DoubleSleeved Yeah, now we're talking!! :D
Now shuffle
Each card in my deck is laminated and forged in titanium
@@tcgmetaslayer4202 Hold up, you might be onto something here.
Does this triple sleeve set up fit in a top loader? And what would be thicker, perfect, hard, inner sleeves, triple sleeved or dragon Shield resealable.?
Sleeve covers/outer sleeves have been around for a long time. I bought my first Ultra Pro "Deck Protector Sleeve Covers" nearly ten years ago.
As double sleevers we have been blown away by the 'outer sleevers' of the world telling us about this way of sleeving. We're just happy everyone else is happy! 😃😃
Hi there! Great review and very informative. Do you know if these triple sleeved cards would fit in the ultra pro 9 pocket pages or the dragon shield 9 pocket pages
They are big. Very big. They do JUST fit inside binders but I wouldn't want to fill a binder with them and the slightest variance of binder production and they would be too big to fit 😬😬
Hello I just want to ask about the boxes.
I got the Ultimate Guard Deck Case 133+ but the lid wont close because of the vertical clearance.
Does the Dragonshield Double Shell also have that problem?
I can't find our dragon shell but it is almost definitely going to have the same issue. These sleeves are very large!
Just a quick question, what deck boxes you recommend that can fit dragon shield clear outer sleeves?
Hi there, What do you do with expensive cards you play double-sleeve, triple-sleeve, what do you think about sealable ultimate guard precision-fit? would they work for double sleeveing as inner sleeve?
You've picked an inner sleeve we haven't reviewed as a video yet. However, any sealable sleeves will provide more plastic protection. Any side-loading inner-sleeves do not offer the fluid protection that top-loading inners do. If you have expensive cards, dragon shield sealable inner sleeves are the most secure (although not a lot more than normal inners). We use ultra pro or gamegenic inners and katana or dragon shield mattes. If you need more protection than that, you are better off proxying than using more sleeves. 😁
I have a custom art (upside down) design sleeves for my legacy deck, the outer sleeve I use is the Z sleeves. I dont like the opening on the outersleeves being on the bottom so thats why i have the art upside down, so when i put them in and the opening on the outer being on the top, the art end up being the right side up.
Makes sense. If it works for you then that's great 😃
This is exactly the video I was looking for. I used standard size clear matte sleeves to triple sleeve my Yu-Gi-Oh! cards. I recently got into Digimon and decided, “I want to buy some artsy sleeves and then put the clear matte sleeves on them.” I don’t know why I thought a standard size sleeve would fit over a standard size sleeve, but I tried. Hahaha. Glad to know these exist. Going to grab some.
Brilliant. Glad to be of service! 😃👍
Perfect Hards + Hyper Phoenix are by far the thickest combination of sleeves I have used.
We haven't tried hyper phoenix, I'll look into it ☺️👍
@DoubleSleeved considering the channel name and the reviews, you might be the right person to ask: is there any regular sleeve (not inner) that has a sealing functionality similar to dragon shield's sealable inner ones? I feel like that woud be sufficient to keep my cards safe from spills and dust getting into the sleeve, but not being as thick/uncomfortable to shuffle/handle. Thank you!
Having done this for many years now, we have never heard of one. The issues of how a sleeve seals itself is probably the issue. The folding would come loose during shuffling and any glued sleeves would just catch and rip apart during shuffling.
There are 'team bags' from ultra pro and other resealable bags but they are not really sleeves, more just sealable bags. Unfortunately the best method is to inner and outer sleeve. Sorry I can't be of more help. 😥
@@DoubleSleeved thank you very much for the reply. I also appreciate the double sleeve "calculator" you provide on your website. I guess the next best thing to the product I'm dreaming of is getting the best thinnest sleeves I can find instead. Would you say a ultimate guard inner sleeve + ultimate guard katana sleeve would be the best fit for that?
You are welcome. That guide took many months of work so we are pleased you find it useful. Honestly the ultimate guard precise fit are not recommended due to a number of manufacturing inconsistencies. But the katana inner sleeves, ultra pro inners or gamegenic inner sleeves would be great. And yes, katana outers are amazing 😁
Ah yes, my bad, I've written the wrong name for the inner sleeves I was thinking about, but I get you. Thank you again for the support.
Perfect to use with Pokémon Art ETBs Sleeves! 🔥
Great review! What are the dimensions of the outer sleeves if you dont mind my asking? Ive got a homemade storage box and im not quite sure if they will fit!
I don't have them on my right now but will do my best to message tomorrow. They are big though! ☺️
@@DoubleSleeved Thank you!
Oficial Pokemon sleeves art are amazing sometimes but they damage really quick, will this work for pokemon sleeves??
These certainly will, however they are large so be prepared for that in your storage :)
I suppose this product makes sense if your deck costs as much as a brand new Audi. The Vintage/OS 93-94 players likely appreciate the extra level of protection.
But at what point do you just consider proxies and remove the risk altogether?
This was certainly something I mentioned in another comment. Proxies will be your only 100% protection strategy. However, many people carry mobile phones without cases or screen protectors so risk is relative haha 😅
How thick is an EDH deck with just over sleeves and standard outer sleeves?
Tough one. I will see if I can work this out. The outer sleeves are the same thickness as dragon shield Mattes. The issue is likely to be the length and width if you are looking to fit into a deck box. Very few have the space for 100 cards.
You forget the vanity side of this product. Some time there are some sleeves with awesome art but they are hard to shuffle. This product solve the problem
You aren't wrong. Nice artwork needs protecting. We went on the descriptions from Dragon Shield but have learned of the popularity of over sleeves for protecting art.
nice video buddy thanks, did they fit in a regular top loader?
Can confirm the width is perfect and there is a mm clearance above when fully inserted. Practically made for it. This is with Ultra Pro toploaders, others may vary internally. Not sure their tolerances are that small.
@@DoubleSleeved love it, thx 🙏🏻
Can you do an outer sleeve for border sleeves on Yugioh cards?
We haven't done any Yu-Gi-Oh products so far, but one day we want to cover it all! 😊👍
Quick Question! Can these fit in a binder?
It depends which binder. Some may just squeeze them in but majority won't.
Try shuffling a triple sleeved deck in toploaders! Joking aside these look amazing for collectors but not so much for actually playing with.
It has crossed my mind to do an 'ultimate card protection' list haha. But dragon shield definitely talk about playing, and don't think it improves on a toploader at all other than price a little.
I wouldnt use inner sleeves if I were using outers. Outer sleeves are great because it allows for a consistent shuffle feel, regardless of what standard art sleeves I use.
This is something we are now far more aware of. We took Dragon Shields own word that these are a 'triple sleeve' rather than the most accepted use of an outer sleeve for art. Although the black outers seem to be more triple sleeve focused. Thank you for your comment :)
Interesting dragonshield decided to market these as triple sleeves, think the best use for these is protecting regular art sleeves that dont have the best durability.
Interesting, you probably can't be far wrong. Either way many of the issues remain except the super thickness. 🫤
Short question: Are there Ultra pro: Pro-Fit sleeves for Yugioh cards? They're probably very good and I would like to try them on my Yugioh cards. Could you recommend the sleeves for Yugioh as well. Sorry for my bad English😅😅 I'm from Germany and we don't have so much English at school😅 Have a nice day😊
Yes, you can find them here: www.shopultrapro.eu/products/pro-fit-small-deck-inner-sleeves-100ct
We don't test Yugioh specifically but in heory they should be just as good.
Your English is great also! 😁😁
Thank you for your quick response. I will test the sleeves and also thanks for the compliment😂😊😊
Just a thought, what about ranking each type of sleeves? 😉
Forgive me, I meant top 10 in each type of sleeves
Top 10 of each time? We did the best sleeves of each type but we would struggle to get 10 of each to rank! I will link to our video but also our sleeve comparison guide that helps you see how sleeves compare to eachother!

Enjoy :)
These are perfect for me because I love using jp Pokemon card sleeves and these outer sleeves protect them from getting damaged
I find that you don't start seeing the added benefits of sleeving until you are at least 5 layers of sleeves deep.
Only 5? If you don't have each card inside its own clear deck box then your just taking unnecessary risks.
Yeah sure for the people with OCD. Honestly double sleeving is good enough
Double sleeving is certainly adequate for most. ☺️
I got these and actually enjoyed them... or i would have... if any of my deck boxes fit these things
They are so big aren't they 😥😥
@DoubleSleeved yeah like why make them but no deck box to fit them. I found the only boxes that fit these are the dragonshield single and double shells... and those are cheap with a capital bad
The outer sleeves will likely receive less wear n tear from shuffling if you forgo the perfect fit sleeve, perfect fit isn’t necessary if you want to protect art sleeves, ppl are so crazy about this lol
I need quintuple sleeving fast ! Coffee drinking gets more dangerous every year !
😅😅😅
I triple sleeve to protect my sleeves, lol. Also, it helps protect the cards against damage. Good for someone who's diagnosed as 80% O.C. 😂
I'm going to put an elastic band around my deck and put it in a sandwich bag.
I envy simplicity and raw joy that will create. 😁👍
i use these for double sleeving, rather then triple
Interesting, what do you inner sleeve with? 🤔☺️
@@DoubleSleeved normal silver matt dragon shield, and then these clear outers. I used KMC outers however now that dragon shield have started, i have moved over.
Nice. Well, if your hands are large enough and your deck box is appropriately sized then great 😊
I can see how this might be useful for foils that curl.
It certainly has some uses. Just quite specific and probably niche ones.
These aren't really new, they've been used in, mostly Japan for years with art sleeves because KMC and other brands make them
That's fair. Not something we've seen much over in the UK. Either way, the concept is pretty new to us 😅
This is made for when shaq ever plays magic
These are Shaq sleeves for sure. Although he will likely make them look tiny nonetheless 😆😆
If I triple sleeve I’d run out of room in my house
I use the clears to get a great shuffle feel from art sleeves that i like from other companies
Good stuff!
