  • We envision an education system where learning transcends the traditional school calendar and setting. We envision a system where students progress based upon mastery of a skill or topic, rather than time spent in a classroom.
And hey - students shouldn't be bored in the classroom. Let's reshape our system so that learning is personalized, and students have a true voice in their education.

a chalkboard, a desk, the homework, the books, the day begins and ends when the bells ring. for centuries now this has defined what all of us think about school, we have come to believe that this is the one way that students will learn. and with all that belief we have taught all of our students in pretty much exact same way. but the world has changed and what it means to be ready to succeed in future has also change that means our model of learning must change.

I do agree with this. Education should focus on the whole child rather than on the content. Students should test ideas by activie experimentation. It revolves around students' needs, including teaching students to be a good citizens as well as good learners. 😊

The 4 Key Principles of Learner-centered teaching:
    1. Learning is Personalized
    2. Learning is Competency-Based
    3. Learning happens anytime anywhere
    4. Students take ownership
How significant are these principles in today's learners?
This principle is significant for today's learners because this is the only way we can go along with our changing world, where learning is crucial for learners. New beginnings, new methods, new pace, new discoveries, and new learnings that these principles offer can help us to make improvements every step of the way, where the students and teachers can contribute to each other learnings. Together with these key principles, teachers, and students, we can build a better future, successful ones, and a better nation.

I believe on-line schooling is great. No longer do I suffer from failing to get a professor's attention in a classroom, while he/she is flirting with 20/bunnies. One of my son's went to a "troubled kids" school and excelled, he was able to learn to be confident and enjoyed lower class sizes and be taken off Ritalin ( the favored meds for teachers that no longer want to invest in students), Fought and won special education to get my twins senior year actually learning (which they didn't really do in special ed). Anything that can be done for the student to excel and graduate K-12, and on into college or tech. school is signs of a healthy school district. Which my children's school dropped in 10 years from 9th in Michigan to 68. I think alternative learning is what children and parents need for the best growing experience!

The 4 key principles of learner centered teaching are :
    1.Learning is personalized
    2.Learning is competency based
    3.Learning happens anytime, anywhere
    4.Students take ownership
•It is significant in today’s time because students have different paths of learning and not every student has the same ability to understand the lesson immediately. And these principles can help students have the ability to grow, discover and understand more about what the instructor teaches. All four key principles must work together to make the student discover more about things and themselves.

In a learner-centered teaching, there are 4 principles and these are: learning is personalized which means that each student has different way of learning and as an educator, it is our responsibility to know what are the teaching strategies that we can apply for them to understand things easily; learning is competency based which means that as their knowledge expands, they also master the skills needed; learning happens anytime and anywhere which means that learning is a continuing process and in every where they go and in everything they do, they will gain something; and lastly, students take ownership which means the students are always included in every decision that has to be done. These principles are significant for it helps the students to discover more about themselves, develop their skills which are necessary in facing the real world everyday as well as going to the field they want to be in, and adapt to our changing world.

You're obviously constructing your conclusion (it makes no sense) around the "old" system (a teacher having 80+ students a day)... A new system would look much different then this. Sorry I don't have much more time to reply... Not because I don't value you or your opinion but because I'm very busy working to solve/bring light to the present solutions we have to our many major human issues. (Education being one of them) I'll say that you and people that like and share your opinion on this topic have to look and think a lot harder for this to make sense. Actually, considering how common your view on education must be, I will make a video on the topic in the coming months to help people visualize a "new" system and how a learning experience can be designed around each student. I hope you take this response positively. I mean no offence. Cheers

Having taught in (and now just recently retired from) a progressive school in Pasadena, California, called Sequoyah School, I have been working on the efficiency and effectiveness daily for 36 years. The size of the class is foundational to effective learning. If you can't get around to each student and understand their needs, it is hard to be effective in facilitating student individual progress.
Equally essential to the process is a curriculum that is focused on the students' ability and enthusiasm to challenge themselves. This does not mean that we don't challenge them ourselves, but it also means that they challenge us. In that way we learn to become better teachers as well as to refine our understanding of the topics explored as well. We can foster this self direction and self understanding through projects that require students to apply skills and that accomplish real world goals (as often as possible).
I have so much more to say, but I don't want to write a thesis in this reply! Teachers who succeed in this sort of environment need support from administration that mirrors the support that we give the students. We need room to make mistakes as well as the teaching tools, methods provided through professional development and the support for special needs. We need the room to express best learning selves through our classroom crafted curriculum (under the guidance of experienced teachers). Many teachers whither under the pressure, lack of appreciation and ridiculous structure enforced. By allowing ourselves and our newer teachers the room to create solutions, we can celebrate learning rather than enduring it.

Sixth grade teacher here. My approach is that I do not want to have kids meet me at unrealistic expectations to which not all of them can meet. Rather, everyday I try to meet each kid at their own unique level, and help them grow in their own way. Kids are incredibly diverse and it is unfair to them to treat them all the same way; what works for Johnny does not necessarily work for Suzie, etc.
So the challenge for us educators is finding a way to meet kids at their level, but also being able to provide for each student sufficiently. The way that I try to do this is by creating assignments that are so big and complex, that kids have no choice other than approaching the problem in their own unique ways. I do not stand up at the front of the classroom and TELL kids information, I simply give them access to information and it is up to them to find it and use it how they see fit.
When kids are able to do this, they put their own unique ideas and flair on assignments because they are not trying to appease the teacher, they are simply trying to solve problems in the way they know how; and I think that is awesome.

I quite agree with this video but I want to know how could we realize this in reality; how to evaluate students.

There are two elements to evaluation. The first is the use of evaluation that is diagnostic rather than reductionistic (finding what still needs attention for the student rather than comparing one student to another). Feedback on daily work as well as student self-reflection, helps to nudge the skills in the right direction and helps to motivate the students to rework and refine their thoughts and conclusions. Larger projects can incorporate multiple skills to be demonstrated. For instance, doing a survey expressed through a circle graph in 6th grade can allow a student, teacher and parents to find out if a student understands multiple skills. Tracking data with a chart, finding fractions of a whole, converting fractions to decimals and percentages, calculating degrees of a circle and using a protractor to create measured sections of the graph are required. Also a person's persistence in multi-step tasks, attention to details and ability to communicate information aesthetically could be looked at.
The second element involves how and to whom the evaluation is communicated. Through use of portfolios, student can incrementally observed their own progress as well as have signposts for their parents. A diligent educator will be a constant participant in helping the student put together the portfolio with his or her comments incorporated. This helps to keep all on track about the trajectory of a student's progress. Conferences and written reports from the teacher including the parents and student are also essential in the communication portion of this process.
Also essential to the process of evaluation is the teacher's assessment of the effectiveness of the unit for the individual. This constant feedback helps the teacher to refine all the details in how they interact with both the students and the top content itself. All this sounds intimidating, but if the school supports teachers to be able to effectively assess, teachers, students, parents and administrators feel so much more fulfilled in their life-long learning.

Wait, if it has worked for centuries then what is exactly wrong with it?. The wheel has been around forever. Should we change that too?
There has to be a reason for change. Change for the sake of changes sake won't help you.

The Four (4) Principles of Learner- Centered Teaching are:
    1. Learning is Personalized: It happens when teacher and students have a strong connection that helps the teachers to meet the needs for the students to acquire knowledge.
    2. Learning is Competency- Based: Learner- Centered teaching is not just about moving to one curriculum to another. However, it is about teaching the students the mastery of the skills and lessons that they can move through their own pace.
    3. Learning happens anytime, anywhere: Learning doesn't stop when the school bells rings. Students can also learn outside the school premises.
    4. Students take ownership: The students should be involved on their own success. The teachers do not decide for them. Instead, they have a direct role in their journey.
How significant are the these principle in today's learners?
These principles are important to the learners as these principles prioritizes their well- being as a student. Specially in this kind of situation- the COVID- 19 pandemic, the students are autonomous on their learning but with the assistance of the teachers. The situation of the learners today gave us a huge example of how students can learn at their own pace. Additionally, these principles pushes the students to be goal- oriented and to direct them in the successful path.

Student centered learning must be prioritized in any educational institutions as it helps the students to grow in their own way. There are four key principles that was included in this type of learning method which is very important to consider. First is (1) "Learning is Personalized" in which the relationship between teachers and students are highly required because in this way, teachers will play a big role in the development of the students. They will be more knowledgeable enough about the skills and the things that was needed to improve by the learners. And with that, teachers will come up to a strong learning set -up or method that can help students to improve based on their interest and personal skills. The second one is (2) "Learning is Competency Based" or the principle wherein mastered skills of the students are centralized. This can help students to excel on their own because of their natural talents, and teachers will also be a big help to give students an appropriate approach in order to improve what skills they already have. Third is (3) "Learning Happens Anytime, Anywhere" and its main purpose is for us to understand that traditional teaching should not create barriers for student's development because wherever we are, we are learning a lot of things especially based on our experiences. And with that, it clearly shows how we could learn beyond the limits of traditional teaching. And lastly (4) "Students Take Ownership" which means that teachers should let their students to learn on their own and not just because they tell them to. These four key principles of student centered learning is very significant in todays learners because it can help us to discover our own selves and to know who we really are. The modern world is rapidly growing and advancing and it is very clear to all of us but education should not left behind. Education must also reach the highest level of advancement, and this student centered learning is a big stepping stone for it. Our future depends on next generation, that's why we must create a powerful tool to have a good future; and this the student centered learning.

What are the 4 principle keys of Learner-centered Teaching? And what are the significant roles of these 4 keys on the lives of our learners today?
First key principle is, Learning is Personalized. It is important for an Educator to be as committed as the student on studying, because it engaged them to learn deeply and Educator meets the needs of every student with different types of learning interests.
Second, Learning is a Competency-Based. Its significant role on teaching is, you have to supply their individual needs and abilities with different style of teaching based on their competency. Every child has different capabilities and ability and for them to be active and learn on a class, you have to be flexible as possible on teaching for you to gave them informations and learning without only basing on curriculums.
Third key is Learning happens anytime, and anywhere. It is important for an educator to know that every individual has the ability to learn something in different ways, and it can happen anytime. So it is important for Educators to have different types of teaching, demonstrations, activities and experiments that helps child learn on their own and not just by supplying them informations that they have to learn.
Lastly is, Student take ownership. It is important for a student to experience and make their own discovery or understanding about something for them to remember and fully understand it.
It is important that all the key principle is present in teaching for a learner to fully understand a certain topic and for them to be engaged on learning.

How significant are these principles in today's learners?
    - These 4 key principles of learner-centered teaching are significant for today's learners as it helps learners to know that learning process is not just about what the school or teachers teach, but to show that students must be accountable for their own learning process for them to grow not just as learners but to be a better person.
