  • Today I am comparing 4 Lavalier (Lav) microphones used for filmmaking and CZcams purposes. These 4 lapel microphones are some of the most popular you can find and are still the go-to for many video producers.
    In this video, I am comparing two different Rode Lavalier Mics, the Comica Lavalier Mic, and the Sennheiser Lav mic.

    I like the sennheiser sound. There is really very little mud and room sound from it. All you need to do is filter out the siblance and unwanted high frequency and you have a great source to manipulate(the usual beefing up, saturation, eqs, compression,etc.). The rest of them records too much ambient sound that gives a headache when you need to subtract in post. I don't need room echo for any interview/recording. If I need reverb, I use my own favourite effects and blend it in in post. And most of the time when you work with background music going on in the same timeline, I prefer a dry sound to begin with so it can be in your face when dry, or you can manipulate it for some natural ambience to your taste.

    The Senheisser volume was not matched to be the same as the others so not a fair test. The human ear always prefers the loudest option.

    Hey. I notice you're using the Rode link filmmaker kit . I have a few kits and notice that there is is a slight noise that seems to ride the signal as the talent talks. I use eneloop pros in all my gear. How has the noose floor for this system treated you?

  • @TheGuitarPit
    @TheGuitarPit Před 5 lety +1

    I bought the film maker kit based on your recommendation in a video you did about your camera setup. It's been a great investment. I was slightly worried that the included lav didn't have a replaceable cable as you mentioned, so I'm glad to see you can get great results with that comica mic.

    I’m late to the party, but I enjoyed your video. I looked around for the Rode lavalier microphone here in Europe, but there seem to be several models and packages with no clear model numbers. Big price range too. If you have any suggestions, then let me know. Thanks!

  • @gregm.857
    @gregm.857 Před 4 lety

    Thanks for the demo/comparison. Nicely done and a useful selection of mics. (Your room is a bit live for my taste, but it's probably similiar to places where I might be recording interviews, so it gives realistic examples.) I agree with your #1 choice. IMHO the second Rode and the Comica, while slightly different from each other, are tied for second place. The Senny is a shocking disappointment. I always put Senny and AKG up at the top of the list, but this lav, at least, is an exception. It sounds very constricted ... ugh! --- Your links for the Comica take me to pages selling a complete wireless system. Is it possible to buy just the mic? Is it, perhaps, the CM-M-01; if not, can you please give the model # for the mic itself. Thanks again!

  • @Matthew_Raymond
    @Matthew_Raymond Před 3 lety

    I actually think the Comica is the worst of the four. It sounds very nasal, like you have a cold. The Rodes sound better than the Sennheiser, but that's largely because of the gain. If you boost the volume of the Sennheiser, it sounds pretty good, although it still needs a bit of a boost on the lower end. The two Rode mics have the opposite problem, with an over-boosted low end that starts to overwhelm the higher frequencies.

      You need to check the device manual to see if the mic input can supply current otherwise it won't work. The Rode SmartLAV with the correct connector sounds great as an option too and should work with most portable recorders.
