    NOTES:
    ----------------------------------------------
    Ian Craig, a CZcamsr and subscriber, did a review of a lapel from a company I've never heard of, MicBooster, and did some tests of the Clippy EM172 lapel mic. It was impressive.
    I am STiLL looking for the perfect lav mic (still haven't found it), but this lav mic beats the pants off my other lapel mics, including the $249 Rode lav.
    You can only order this direct from their website, located in the United Kingdom, there will be a small shipping charge, and it took about 10 days to reach me from across the pond.
    I would highly suggest this lapel if you need one and DON'T CARE about the size. It's larger than all of them, so using this to hide on talent is not an option, but, out of the three compared, I like how this one sounds the best, and don't care if it's seen for my videos.

    Thank's for the upload!
    More factors to consider: The size- how easy is it to hide?
    The durability- is it going to fail when I need it to work? (They all break eventually)
    How much noise does it make with clothing and touching the cord etc.
    The tone doesn't mean much it your mic breaks, or the clothing noise is wrecking the track.
    I have been using Rode Lav and Smartlav+ more often than not (if I have to use a lav) It has been a good compromise so far.

    • @BasicFilmmaker
      @BasicFilmmaker  Pƙed 5 lety +2

      This is a larger than usual lapel mic. I wouldn't buy it if hiding it is a consideration. It's a metal casing and looks more durable than all the others. As with all mics, noise with clothing and touching the cord is a problem, some more than others, and you would have to take measures to mount it on the talent properly, as you would any lapel. I would buy this if you don't mind it being shown on the screen, as it's not small.

    • @iancraig
      @iancraig Pƙed 5 lety +2

      I’ve kind of resigned myself to the fact that most lavs sound like ‘lavs’ with depth mostly curtailed and high levels of self noise. (As you demonstrated beautifully on the video) The EM172 gives just a bit more adjustment with levels, which means that you can also get it away a little bit without raising the noise floor too much, and very often a more natural sound as well. Plus the EM172 has a pretty robust sound anyway. Actually, you sound good on it too.

    After listening for a while on my monitor speakers, I'd say the Rode is more similar to the shotgun IMO. I'm listening on basic JBL monitor speakers with no EQ (flat as possible). Can't wait for the Etymotic ER4SR to arrive though...
    Quite disagree with your opinion on sound, I think it's Rode > Deity > the cheap one. I am comparing this to your original shotgun mic sound. The cheap one sounds a little harsher than the Deity, Rode, and the shotgun. The Deity lacks the "pleasantness" of the Rode but has that low-end that the cheap one is missing. The Rode has it all for a lav mic (at least I think so). I will be getting the Rode SmartLav+ (which is the same sound as the Rode Lavalier other than the Micron connection according to Rode) to plug into a Zoom F2 :) (32-bit float is super convenient). I haven't been disappointed in Rode one bit. I own a Rode VideoMic Pro+ (sounds AMAZINGGG, but have yet to use in my video) and a Rode NT1 (best mic I've owned, beating out AT2020 which is also very good). Considering a lavalier/lapel for the sake of convenience while still getting good sound quality.
    In general, I came to my conclusion because I think the cheap one lacks the low-end of the shotgun, Deity, and Rode . The Deity lacks in the mids-to high compared to the Rode and the shotgun. The Rode has everything. This is personal opinion. I'd say if you're not an audio freak though, that cheap mic is literally the BEST under $90.

      I’ve got 3 Rode mics. All together they cost less than $250. I like the build quality, especially on the lav microphone - much better than my really cheap audio-technica lav mics. One off tests like this are “interesting” at best, but not really valid. If you buy any of these mics and it’s not satisfactory, send it back. B&H has a very good return policy.

      Good point Art. For me, it’s simply how does it sound with my voice. Still searching for the perfect lav mic. 😁

      Basic Filmmaker I don’t like using lavs, but sometimes it is the practical solution. Even in my office, I sometimes choose the lavalier as a “quick and dirty” choice when I’m just lazy.

      Art Johnson Dunno, seems like comparisons like this are really really valid, because if your microphone sounds mediocre at best while costing 250 damn dollars no build quality can save your audio quality, which is kinda the point of a mic.
      It’s like modern Mac laptops: if you computer has great build quality but freaking keyboard breaks because of a dust particle, screen breaks because you open/close your laptop, and it thermo throttles under load, well, lets put it bluntly, it’s a shitty computer than cannot do basic computer stuff. But it has a really solid build, true.

      Nice. So far, the ONLY lapel mic that blew me away was the not released yet one I tested at the NAB show from @Deity. If it's as good as it was when I tested at in my studio, I don't care what they charge, I'm buying it. :)
