  • Lavalier microphones can often be an area of confusion for many people. They look rather similar, but there are differences between models, so which lavalier microphone is right for you?

Carl, you make excellent videos, I always find myself searching youtube for videos comparing products before I purchase. My searches bring me to many reviews, but I always find myself coming back to watch yours multiple times. Your reviews are very clear, concise, detailed without a ton of non-relevant information, and Most of all I do not feel like you are pushing a certain product and you are giving a true user review. I just ordered the Sennheiser avx mke2 after watching this review as well as your avx review. I was torn on the me2 vs mke2, but I know I will kick myself if I do not buy the mke2. It is more expensive, but it's cheaper in the kit, vs buying after the fact. Keep up the great work. Michael Frisch

Can confirm, using MKE2 since the mid 2000s. It is crazy that now almost 20 years later, I am still using them and there is still nothing really better on the market.
Never had a capsule drown in sweat, never had cable issues and they still sound and perform like on the first day. (mine are the beige types for direct glued to cheek or forehead).

Quite impressed with the ME2, probably gonna pick one up for my next shoot.
Usually use a shotgun mic but doing a small budget shoot where I’m doing it all solo, so no budget for a shotgun mic operator.
Probably just going to run the lav from a 3.5mm extension cable as I haven’t got a wireless pack and feel like a cable will probably be a bit easier and more reliable as I don’t have to worry about batteries on a two day shoot.

I think the main use case for the ME4 is with a PA system as the cardioid pattern will help minimise feedback. I've seen them used in presentations in an auditorium. They were also recommended for use with a Visual Radio (automatic camera selection) system, but they proved unusable in a small studio as when the presenters turned their heads, the sound level fell off dramatically.

Well, personally me4 isn't really that bad as most comments mentioned here.
I own plenty of ew100 series with me2 and me4. A few days ago, I was doing a live-streamed talk show, where there were three people sitting around a small round coffee table and talking in a non-treated room.
When I tried me2 in this case, mic spill was a pretty significant, and it was causing some phasing issues due to its omnidirectional pick up pattern. Then we decided to give me4 a try.... problem solved.
So, yes....it really depends on the scenario you're in.

MKE2 Fav on your voice here. These lav mics always have a thinner less natural sound to me than say a good shotgun or certainly a good VO larger mic. However, the tiny buggers can clip on your shirt. Off axis recording of the omni design seems essential if you are turning your head at all.

I've been using two MKE-2 mics with AVX transmitters for the past 6 years in a variety of indoor and outdoor venues and there's never been an issue with interference - they've worked perfectly and reliably. One possible cause could be poor impedance matching between the receiver and whatever recording device you use. My AVX receivers are almost permanently plugged into a couple of C100 MK-II cameras, or occasionally to a Sound Devices 633 audio recorder.

The MKE2 and ME2 are omnidirectional but the ME4 is cardioid and so it's not much use pointed in the 'wrong' direction. In terms of picking up the speaker the MKE2 and ME2 can be oriented in any direction.
One reason to point a mic 'down' is if the speaker is likely to for some reason breath hard (sneeze or cough perhaps). Some people feel the sharp sibilance can be reduced by pointing downwards too.

No, not directly. Search i.e. for den Rode Smart Lav and you‘ll see that the cinch cable has 3 black rings (TRRS) while the cinch cable of any other microphone only has 2 rings (TRS).
To record with a mobile phone you always need a TRRS cable so that your phone will register incoming sound.

Do check if the cable is not defective. I've had a lot of cable noise on my MKE 2 which I later found to be caused by the clip that came with it. The clip was pinching the cable too much causing damage to the cable. Sennheiser service then told me to buy a new mic.

Yes, the mke-2 EW gold has a stiff shielded cable that can cause a lot of noise. As Jeff Brass said, if you experiment with a decent loop, and taping the cable to clothing you can get rid of the noise completely with some practise.

Wow, me4 sounded terrible…I was really hoping that one would sound the best. Was the problem the placement, because it's cardioid, or does it just sound bad?

That's the way it sounds, a cadiod mic has what is called the proximity effect, the further it is from the source the thinner it sounds. It should only be used if you need to reject the noise in the room or you are using it on a live stage and gain before feedback is a concern.
It will sound allot better with a little EQ.

I lost my ME2 and bought the ME4 and I regrets it. The comic is not the best for moving around, no matter how it’s clipped it moves around and cause unwanted noise in the audio. I’m going with ME2 or MKE2 now for sure

You said that the MKE2 is better build in terms of hardware, but how is the sound quality like compared to the ME2? Is it clearly noticeable? I have seen the MKE2 with a variety of connection type like miniXLR or LEMO type connection. Haven't seen these options for the other sennheiser ones. Instead they use the more consumer minijack plug.

Interesting comparison. The MKE-2 is much fuller, and will be much more accepting to EQing in post.
Of note, you placed the MKE-2 upside down in the test. This is something I will do if subjects are standing, but wouldn’t ever do if someone is sitting, given that their lap can cause a phasing or slightly muffled sound.
