Porsche 928 Turbo Update #1! Buckets of Yikes, But Making Progress!

- Welcome to the first update on the 1986 Porsche 928 I bought a few months ago. This car is what most people would consider a basket case, but I make so many decisions that some of them are bound to be bad.
I'm making this a video series sorting out all of the sometimes troubling work on this car. If you haven't seen the first video on it, check it out here
• I Bought Another Proje...
These cars have always been appealing to me, and finding them with a manual is difficult mated to a 32v. I've taken the plunge to sort this car and this is the first round of work. I added a Wideband air-fuel ratio gauge to accurately monitor whether its running lean or rich. I've relocated the intake air temp sensor and properly sorted the throttle body elbow which was a disaster in itself. I've sorted some of the wiring for the MAF extension, a few vacuum leaks and discovered the crankcase vent system is in quite poor condition.
I also was able to get into contact with Mark Robinson, the man who designed this turbo kit AND a previous owner of this car. A lot of very interesting information was shared, including one previous accident which doesn't change how I feel about the car.
The next steps are to sort the crankcase vent system including adding a catch can, installing the freshly cleaned 30# injectors that this kit is supposed to have, and a new 6:1 FMU. Eventually, once this car is more sorted I'll likely go with a piggy back or standalone engine management but for now I need to get the mechanical aspects of this car straightened out before I try to squeeze every last bit out of it.
Don't forget to subscribe if you want to keep up to date with progress with this car. I'll be posting updates as often as I get work done.
Thanks for watching! - Auta a dopravní prostředky
Very cool that you're resurrecting my old car! Yes I sold it back in 2005 when I ran across an ultra-low mile 86.5 5-speed car. The turbo "kit" on this car was the first production parts allotment produced by Boostlogic before they had their feet planted on the ground, but the way it's on the car now does not reflect how it was mounted in 2005: the large 4" torque-tube hanger for the turbo assembly is missing, the coat hangers were added (not needed with the 3.5" air intake mount, and zip-ties were used somewhat here/there to ensure a high-hang on less important items. I have NO idea why the large BOV was added near the intake...yes it does look awful and you cannot vent to atmosphere like that on a closed-loop MAF draw-through system. I initially had the Bosch RV (recirc. valve) at the intake but later moved it back because even at 5psi, too much pressure was in the lines and it would occasionally pop a hose free. You can have both but you'd need to run a 1" hose all the way back into the pipe before the MAF. Not sure what happened to the 30# injectors, FMU, wiring extension harness (Eagle-day or JDS Porsche) used to offer a MAF male for which I used a male & female to make a 10.5' extension, but that's missing now. This was the car that the kit was experimented on before things solidified for the jigs, so future cars didn't have the same things like intercooler plumbing & such. That car did dozens of 12 second passes at San Antonio raceway back in 2005-2006- it was a hoot. Glad you're resurrecting it properly! Mark
Just clearing your name too, huh ?! 😂Kidding, of course !
@@HallStevenson A person's name is everything at times :) In the last 15 years there's been a few "repairs" that appear emergency-in-nature and un-researched. I have faith in the owner & look forward to seeing future vids.
@@markrobinson1905 awesome to see that this was an actual research an development vehicle, you are a lucky person to be a part of it.......
One thing I noticed is that the MAF on an M28 engine is VERY sensitive to corrosion. I spent some time talking to Speake over in UK about the problem and he even sent me the MAF from his own car. Every few months on my own '85 S2 5 speed I had to clean the MAF plug with Deoxit or it would progressively get richer and richer. I almost choked when I saw those pins pull out of that plug....
That connector ~~HAS~~ to be changed!
@@Flies2FLL Deoxit is awesome stuff.
One thing that amazes me about your videos is how good the sound is.
This is an awesome project. You're making awesome progress even if some temp fixes need improvement. The new FMU and injectors should make a big difference. Love the Toyota lug nut bung I'm gonna steal that idea in the future. Can't wait for the next episode!
Your are a very brave man to own that particular 928, I think you've only scratched the surface.
I almost bought a manual 928 in nice condition 20 years ago but found my senses and backet out of it.
What is/are the major problem(s) with this car?
@@TheImtoomuch electrical, expensive, over engineering. I haveone for 10 years. (Not turbo) 1979 manual. Almost finished 25k$ and it's still not done
@@turdrocket I was fortunate. Previous owner had tons of maintenance records. 928 S4, I owned it 14 years. I still miss that car. I also let go of a 1988 5sp S4, I just had no time for it as well. 928s are my first love.
Dude. SMH. You have a lot more patience than most people.
“God, what else am I going to find?”. Shitloads I reckon mate!!
We need some merch! Maybe a shirt with an engine block leaking coolant on the floor?
And a rod protruding from the oil pan. Lol 😬🤪🤔 I’d buy a couple of those in different colors!!
ABSOLUTELY!!!
We need "a little tappy tap" shirt or something!
I got both my teenage sons watching your channel! Good Stuff!
Love your commentary, video, and subject matter. Keep it going!
I had a '86 S; loved that car -- the grunt, the sound, the look. Loved it. I echo many commenters here -- you are very brave, and I wish I had half your talent with such temperamental machines. Only word of advice from me is to disable or replace the A/C in the back console, because they always erupt in a geyser at the worst possible moment. Can't wait to see what you do with this.
I love your channel. That car is ridiculous! You must be a patient man with a good sense of humor.
Seeing the 7series in the background really making me miss mine 😭
Used to refer to cars like this as "Mickey moused" together. Very interesting - can't wait fpr next installment
This was my dream car in college. I love the 928!
I’ve owned a few 928’s, once they are sorted they are super sweet
Did you ever attend Devek Days or the one in Anaheim?
Enjoy your videos. Happy to see you restoring the condition of a Porsche.
Great video, keep up the great work and best of luck with the Porsche.
Very nice work ! Wainting for the next update :D
We call this unfugging the fuggery. I had to do the same kind of stuff to my boosted C5
I just watched your coyote tear down and now I’m on to this, I should’ve made myself some popcorn lol
Love the videos man, thank you for the hours of entertainment
I like this video set so far. Please do keep the updates on this going.
Active front steering adjusts the front end alignment on the fly
Another great video!!! Thanks for posting, I'm learning a lot!
Cool project. Looking forward to more videos about your progress.
Good luck. Can't wait to see the final results.
I remember wanting a 1986 944 Turbo when I was younger. No such desire today but I can still see the appeal of Porsches from that era. Now I drive an antiporsche, a 1970 142S. 😇
A 944 Turbo is scary fast. Lighter than a 928, but when it goes, it's like a jet.
You some work ahead of you man look forward to see how it turns out
Dude ,I thought my old 94 probe gt was the epitome of being "Mickey Rigged" but that 928 takes the cake! Its amazing you werent leaving a trail of parts down the road! best of luck to you!
As long as you end up where you want to be then the trip is usually worth the trouble. Plus you always have a good story to tell.
Great video, and look forward to updates on this one
Well I be looks like some of my exhaust work, thank you for your videos really enjoy watching.
I know your not a professional comedian or welder but you had me laughing with all the remarks about what is wrong with the car....As they say its all in the delivery with the punch line. Looks like a lot of sorting but I'm excited to see you fix it . My dad had one of these cars I was able to drive it now in then in the 80s. Loved the car. Great channel!
You are not complaining.......the car was in poor shape. Great video and when she's done right, she will be a great ride.
When you take on someone else's unfinished project you never know what you're going to get. the surprises of how stupid people do stuff never amazes me
I for one thank the previous owner(s) for the shoddy repairs so we can enjoy you finding them 😁
Oh, just wait for the update. There’s more. Of course there’s more.
@@I_Do_Cars Sounds about right, like you said otherwise we wouldn't get cars like this if they were mint!
Still a solid unit... it's more fun when you do it yourself (and do it right). The parts for those are expensive (I owned one for 3 years, 2001-2003) and if you don't cut corners, it can get pricey real fast. Take your time, do it right, years of enjoyment. Those things absolutely FLY
Cool! I really like your attention to detail and your disapproval of bad mechanical work😅
Love these kinds of videos
Man, I can’t wait to see you fix this thing up. Good on you.
Fix it up and sell it to Hoovies Garage.
Much love bro.
Another great video, keep it up.
8:22 "cut the wires staggered". This "stagger" is the proper way because if you lose the insulation the odds of a fire are greatly reduced. It is said that an even ( not staggered) wiring connection with insulation coming off , caused the January 27, 1967 Apollo 1 fire.
Learn something every day! I always did it this way because it looks nicer to wrap.
Normally your videos are super relaxing, but this one gave me severe anxiety 🤣
Yeah that poor car was a fire hazard waiting to go up in flames. .....I think it's in great hands now.....good to see something diffrent and out of the ordinary
It will be ok, they are killer cars once you sort the problems. 155 mph for a stock euro, I bet yours will do much better.
The 928 is also on my bucket list, but this video is why I am likely to never try to resurrect a "classic" as I am sure I don't have the skills, or the patience to do this. But you are doing great with it. I will keep tuned in on this series!
Have some $$$, but I guarantee you, the 928 is a great car. Go with an S4 or higher. GT and GTS are almost impossible to find.
If this car went to PFI, it would be the only car Brent & Jason would work on for 2 days straight. Keep at it bro. You are doing well.
Those Porsche 928 are beast. V8 power with a turbo. Numerous guys would want that car.
"It's a German car. It's leaking . At least it wont rust. " Car repair meets stand up comedy .
Self applying rust proofer
A Porsche does not leak; a Ctroen or a Yugo leaks. A Porsche marks its territory.
Same with British cars. Always leaking.
If you have any car that gets no maintenance, it will leak. Also 928 don’t rust, it’s galvanize steel and aluminum 🙄
I am ready for atleast a month of double video releases per week on your 928. A couple weeks of all nighters to scratch the 928 itch for a few handful of random strangers on the interwebs isn't to much to ask... Besides, when it's all done you'll have one of your beautifully sorted dream cars ready to rip and or cruise at your will. You never know what other opportunities may come from it (if any). I need MOORREEE! Feed muai!!
Makes me miss my 83 928s 5 speed. Great cars
I like your splice / wire repair.
Yup. Previous owners always seem dumb. Bought me a 92 accord 5 speed for 500 bucks. Owner said needed Trans. It only needed shift cables. But it had a few oil leaks. Axle was worn out and shaking bad and ALL the balljoints boots were torn and worn
My Brother-in-law plays with 928's, and he has several of them. You can buy them relatively cheap because they are hugely expensive to maintain. The parts are made by Porsche, what would you expect? He offered to sell me one of his, and said he would even come over and change the oil for me. When he told me how to change out the oil, I said no thanks...I'll keep my Honda Accord. Great video, keep you checkbook handy!
Keep after it. You'll be getting tickets with it eventually. :D
I noticed from watching your vidgeos that when you come across little issues you tend to make it seem like the end of the world.
Ex. When you found the cheap broken wastegate hose you were like, big quick exhale huhhhh.. Geeze whizz! OMG!! Reminds me of my wife, just sayin.... Anyway, the car is one of my all time favorites. Ohhh, the Hips on that ol'girl from behind. Then their is the sound. Reminds me of another one of my all time favorite cars being a well sorted 85 Capri RS 5.0 or Fox Body in general... Best of luck
The most fun car I ever owned was a 2001 996 C4, but almost every time something went wrong the engine and trans needed to be lowered out of the car. So a hundred dollar coolant tank with a pin hole leak was fifteen hundred to change out. Same with the alternator. I had five good years and then said goodbye. I don’t know enough about German cars to hold a wrench in my hand. Best Regards
I would recommend pulling that engine cause if you seeing this on the surface it’s worse what you can’t see. Good luck and hope your pockets are deep cause your going to spending some money for sure. I’ll be here watching this shit show! GREAT VIDEO by the way!
I like the rock auto magnets on you lift!
Turbo 928's are so much fun! so powerful!
This verifies all the Rumors that a Porsche is going to be expensive , one way or another........
The engines are over engineered and very tough, all the old rubber is a problem. Change any old fuel lines, make sure the timing belt has been serviced within the last 5 years. Hit the go pedal too soon in a corner and the rear end will lift, be careful.
This is an awesome project. I’ll bug the gods over at Life of Palos if you keep up the work and production value and maybe we can get you a mention.
As a 17 year old back in the late 1990's I had an opportunity to buy a 1977 Porsche 924. It ran and drove but I saw the writing on the wall. Best purchase I NEVER made! Cool car for a 17 year old but expensive to maintain.
I thought yeh I kinda liked this guy, then I saw what I thought were black E34s on either side then I find out from his other vids he has a blown manual 540i. Brother from another mother :)
Plumber's tape! Sweet.
Nice car that needs some love 😎
Sweet can of worms. Good luck with it. It'll be awesome if you can sort it out.
Man, I love these cars, but they just look like a nightmare to work on. I have a 944 turbo, and it is sooo much simpler looking. Which I never thought I'd say. Absolutely beautiful though
You have to remember back in the day, 928s weren't thought of that highly.."not real Porsches". The only Porsche that got more scorn was the 924. That might explain the cut-rate job done on this car, as a previous owner didn't want to shell out big bucks for a good and professional repair. At least it's in good hands now.
As a kid I loved. The tony Montana porsche 928......still do 38 years later.....
Coat hangers are way cheaper than a genuine or even a replica Porsche exhaust bracket.......... and available from your nearest wardrobe.
That is my favorite car shape, gorgeous lines.
They should have put an LS in it.
It's a classic. Hardly any around these days.
That is awesome that you got in contact with original owner/turbo kit designer. Maybe see if he wants to see his old car, do some wrenching on his old car?
Nah, he got rid of his old car for a reason poot, and it wasn’t cause he couldn’t afford the thing!
You get the most interesting stuff. What I was surprised by was how much the 928 amd 944 Turbo S's I think, are going for. But even the semi-clean 944's are selling for 13k. That is just crazy. A 944 Turbo was selling for 15,500 near me. A 928 with some UGLY orange leather with blue shift knob, blue stitching and a blue 12 o'clock stripe in the steering wheel (I'm in Florida, they were probably huge UF fans or my Alma Matta, Osceola High) but that car they wanted 26k for. A 15 year old boxter is cheaper.
Ideally wanted the 944S back in 87 and almost ordered one. Would still love to find one tho one day and keep it for a summer then pass it on again
These are my dream car.
If possible, it's best to put wideband sensors after the turbo. I've seen many claims that the backpressure before the turbo can influence readings. In my case it did seem good enough, though.
Subscribed !!
He has waaaay more knowledge and energy than I do to tackle that kinda project.
Although my choice wouldn’t make for good CZcams material. I’d opt to simply pay more...much more, to buy a clean, bone stock, low mileage example.
Good luck. Sounds like a infinite problem. At least you won't be bored. Lol
But at least he is the perfect person to own one of these!! They are beautiful cars and are fantastic when they are running good but
in the 80's enjoyed the styling of this car but had too much concern about working on it. Stayed with Mopar cars
Hmmm a somewhat spuriously modified vehicle.
I love it...
Love the 928 models! How do I see what parts you have on inventory for my 6.1 hemi ?
Welcome to old Porsches!
Kewl, carnage...hehehe. Great videos, thank you
This kit was done a disservice by whoever installed it. Pearls before swine. Hopefully you can spiff it up.
Looks like that car spent a few nights down in Old Mexico. They were the only ones I can imagine that would do some hack job on something like this
A good license plate for this car if it could only fit is Pandora's Box! 😆
Ughhhhh, soo much fuckery committed on this car by whoever had it before. Good to see you're getting it all squared away. I've owned so many cars like this over the years, so I feel your pain.
Keep digging, you might find a good bit! :)
Okay is the power cable going to the starter not completely melted and a bare wire?
LOL, sounds like car repair on a very limited budget!
I was wondering why it appeard it was running lean. The smaller than required fuel injectors and vacuum leaks galore answered this...
Jerry has his handy work all over that car.
Okay, okay. I'll watch the first video first. :D
This is awesome! Some thoughts:
GTS mirrors, that is an upgrade. GET rid of that stupid steering wheel, go stock! The pod has a leather cover, it is probably cracked underneath. You have an aftermarket front sway bar, it looks thicker than normal = understeer, look into the thicknesses of this part and the rear part. I know you know about the torn rack boot; 928 steering racks are available on the cheap from Zims in Dallas, $275 last time I checked [compare that to a Lamborghini or Ferrari rack for an '86 at around $3500, and those cars probably can't keep up with your 928~] For the rest of the parts you may need I HIGHLY recommend 928 International. There is no substitute for the professionalism of Mark Anderson's operation!
Which brings up my next point: A 928 isn't an old Corvette or Mustang; It should be kept nice. By that I mean that there shouldn't be a hole in the console where der smokeagedunken [ashtray] used to be. Make sure you take as much care of the aesthetics of this car as you do the technical points. I drove an '85 S2 5 speed for over 19 years and it ALWAYS put a smile on my face. Especially when I took it to good restaurants/nightclubs with valet parking. On more than one occasion, they offered to valet park it for free so they could put it in front of the door to make the place look more glamorous. Not to mention all the attention you'll get at a Cars And Coffee event. All this fun and 13 second quarter mile times and I only paid $10,600 for this car when it was 14 years old...Heh heh!
You're sitting on a winner with this car. Keep up the good work, GREAT VIDEO!
You attended Devek Days? Mark has an S4 5speed I sold to him. It's in good hands.
@@melvinmelville7073 I never went to Devek Days, but I went to Sharks in the Mountains.
P/S steering rack boot is wide open, no? Around 2:40? Anyway, I've always loved these cars. I'm glad you're going to save it from the junkyard :)
Yeah it needs a bellow on that side
That's alot of hokey previous "repairs"
Is that RTV on that silicone boot? What is it with some people and RTV. I bought a tractor and the transmission filter housing must have had an entire bottle of RTV on it and it still leaked. I made a gasket out of a cereal box and it stopped leaking and it didn't need any RTV.
I still want a 928 after seeing this
Looks like a clean 928. I'd do the turbo kit delete option
Also change your heater core asap it was the only failure on my 86 928 (red with all body mouldings)
