Great video, I really enjoyed it.
A few years ago we had a feeding station in the garden which wasn't being well used. This annoyed the kids, who I think expected birds on the feeders all the time. A friend suggested I move it nearer the hedge and hey presto .. more birds. I would have thought and free food would be welcome, but as you say .. the safety of the birds is more important to them.

The goldfinches seem to have disappeared, I haven't seen them for a while. The blue tits usually visit every day, but they don't hang around and I'm lucky to be there with the camera when they show up.

Nice one Greg. Excellent commentary and a lovely selection of birds. Had to chuckle at the bathing Blackbird clip - wonky or what??? 😆 I love watching the birds have a good old splash about and must try getting some more footage of that sort of behaviour myself again soon. Have done so before (czcams.com/video/xgokeEa7U-g/video.html) but I want to try getting some more species. A bathing magpie would be great!
We get pretty much the same species as you, plus Robin and the occasional Wren. I did try Niger seed years ago for Goldfinch but without success - the seed always muldered into a black mess before anything took an interest. I eventually succeeded attracting them, on the advice of a friend, with sunflower hearts! 😀👍

The birdbath is slightly wonky, but I think part of that was the camera angle! I've been trying to get a picture of a magpie for ages, every time I point a camera at them they fly away! So I was chuffed when one came into the garden. I was surprised I didn't see a robin at all, but my wife says she saw one today, so I'll have to keep a look out. I put some sunflower hearts out, but it's mainly the pigeons that like them so far.

I live in a really rural setting, and usually have plenty of bird visitors. However, the past couple of years there has been a distinct lack of Goldfinches, and Greenfinches,in fact, the Greenfinch is non existent at the moment...any reasons why?

    • @GregsWildlife

I'm afraid I'm not knowledgeable enough about bird populations to answer that.
This weekend just gone was the RSPB big bird watch, so they should release some data on the reported garden visitors at some point. It will be interesting to see what those numbers say about the populations and if the lack of finches is common around the country or if you've just been unlucky.
