    It seems that the best times to see the most birds feeding are early morning, soon after the sun is up, & late afternoon, about an hour before the sun goes down. I have lived in a few different geographic/climate zones in America, and the bird types have been different, of course. Red Cardinals; noisy, brave Blue Jays (which do have a wide geographic range); Sparrows; Eurasian Collared Dove (ring-neck Dove); Chickadees; Spotted Towhee, Black Headed Grosbeak; Northern Flicker (a type of woodpecker who likes to eat the suet bricks); Cassin’s Finch; Red Winged Blackbird; Starlings; Nuthatches; Goldfinch; Steller’s Jay & the most wonderful Hummingbirds, in Summer, (who don’t eat seed, but put on the best evening feeding frenzy, before sunset, at the sugar water feeders)! Oh, and the wingless fat feeders - squirrels, deer & bear.

    In that garden I'd add plants trees shrubs etc for cover insect population diversity and birds come after all of that. Bird food should come from everything wild first and then bird shop items after to supplement them. Clean feeders often to help prevent diseases etc and not feeding all the time is good because you don't want birds relying on them.

    Thank you, Abbie. I have big problem with starlings. They come and scare away all the other birds. We have a lot of starlings in Missouri.

    I noticed you put the suet pellets into the seed feeder. I also do this but find they get stuck. I have the national trust apollo 3 port bird seed feeder.

    Theres an old tree stump on my land that i put out bird seed and it's sheltered deep in a copse.I've seen woodpeckers,thrush,blue tits,jays,robins and of course the odd sneaky squirrel...early mornings & dusk seems the right time :) Thanks for a lovely upload keep safe.

    I find the peanuts in my feeders mostly go to waste. I only fill half way and still need to throw out the old and replace with fresh as the birds don’t eat them quick enough. If the fat balls are out most birds will ignore the peanuts unless they’re having a peck whilst they wait for their turn on the fat balls. Will try Niger seeds though as I often seen goldfinches in the area but not in my garden

    Great advice! I seem to get mainly pigeons because mum always used to put bread, with lard spread on it and soaked in water out for the birds - occasionally see blackbirds and crows but smaller birds not so often. Ive now put a suet block out for the smaller birds but will they be put off coming to feed because of all the pigeons?

    They also eat the ticks. mosquitos and other insects on your plants you do not want. You feed them they work more for you.

    I have bought a kilo of dry mealworms and the starlings are eating like a machine in a day. Is it fine if they get soaked in rain for a few days?

    Hi Abbie
    Whilst I would love to feed the birds I have been put off by my experience of coming home & finding a RAT eating residue that had fallen on the ground 😱😱
    Has anyone got any tips to prevent this as I would really like to feed birds again.

    • @Mistydazzle
      @Mistydazzle Před 4 lety +1

      Paul M Use the type of seed, Abbie mentioned, that is without hulls, so the birds completely consume the seeds. Also, be sure to choose higher quality (usually higher priced) seeds that birds will not so readily discard to the ground.

    • @paulm5230
      @paulm5230 Před 4 lety

      Mistydazzle I was feeding them an expensive seed mix without husk/hull..🤷🏼‍♂️

      @@paulm5230 Maybe use hanging feeders with a large base to collect some of the overspill.Unfortunatly rats always seem to find a way.. :(

      Si Cooper Thanks but I feel the wife's having none of it. We had come home from friends & I told her it was a Squirrel but when it came back again all hell broke out. 😱🤷🏼‍♂️

      Since the lockdown, I too have seen rats hanging off my bird feeders. So instead of hanging bird food, I’ve had to buy rat poison boxes for my garden.

      I've had the same challenge but found by putting fence type big hole chicken wire around it let's the birds in and keeps fat greedy rodents out.
