    Started out with trail cameras years ago for watching hedgehogs in my garden, now I'm upto 10 ring stick up cameras, the motion alerts via the ring app are great for knowing when their active in the garden. I'm absolutely devastated though that after 7 years & lots of hedgehogs in the garden I had a badger attack & kill a hedgehog, I don't live anywhere near a woodland so no idea where it came from. Not seen the badger since that night & I'm praying hedgehogs eventually return,I'm still getting infrequent visitors but the hedgehog activity has fallen off a cliff. I don't like cats in the garden either ruining my wildlife garden, I get rid of them using humane ways, water pistol works well, I find those sonic devices do sod all. Regarding that hog house, I hope your still not using that particular one, to be blunt they're crap & not weatherproof. I started off with two of those, the bedding inside ended up all mouldy, the living space inside is very small as well, certainly no room in there for mum & hoglets. I now have 5 Riverside woodcraft houses, extremity well built & lots of room inside, even had hoglets born in them two years running. I also wouldn't place food so close to a hog house, you don't want to be attracting predators to their house so best to place feeding stations as far from hog houses as you can. My visitors preferred purina one kitten food as well, they have expensive tastes! Can highly recommend joining the Hedgehogs! group on Facebook, been on the group for years, now an admin & I've learnt so much for being a part of that group, there's also lots of rescues that post on there as well.

    Hello sir I have a heater in my betas tank could I put that in the teeny tiny tank I have for our tadpoles? Can they survive in unheated water? We have a TON of them in our pool so I just rescued a few bc my kids love them and in a few days once the pool chemicals are done again (every Tuesday I think,) the rest will probably die. I have carrot I can boil to feed them but money is tight right now. I don’t have any swamp water bc they were in our pool. I used regular water with stress coat to put them into instead of more toxic pool water . I hope h see this maybe Thankyou

    Gotta say this is one of the saddest things happening right now. Don't even live in the UK but I'm in the Balkans, not doing well either here. Cars, walls, destroy it's ability to scavenge and well roads are the nail in the coffin and no one really gives a crap, most forget that this creature even exists. Haven't seen the hedgehogs this year at all, and I saw a pair last year that I think was living under a shed, and have been here for quite a long time. They were doing well, fat and round. But when it leaves your garden it very well may be hit by a car, or it just can't find its way back. It's a small animal that can't climb, if there are walls or roads that cause death, then the inevitable fate is death. Often wonder how the landscape looked before all this concrete and walls and urbanization. These animals were here before us, maybe they'll be here after us too, just maybe. And it's very sad, these are just a delight to have in one's garden, they have personality and they destroy pests. But well, reality is too disappointing.

    • @GregsWildlife
      @GregsWildlife Před měsícem

      It is really sad seeing how vulnerable they are. I absolutely hate it every time I see a hedgehog roadkill. All our walls and fences and concrete gardens are making their lives so difficult. It really is upsetting.

    • @GregsWildlife
      @GregsWildlife Před 2 měsíci

      That's a tricky one. On one hand, that sounds like a good idea, on the other, it's possible you'd just be fattening up some tasty turtle food. But if the turtles are going to eat the spawn anyway, there doesn't seem much harm in trying.

    • @kx1260

    • @GregsWildlife
      @GregsWildlife Před 2 měsíci

      Unfortunately, it's not usually recommend to transfer spawn from one pond to another. There's the risk of transferring diseases and other invasive microorganisms that my be in the water. The best way of helping would ideally be to remove the invasive turtles, but that sounds like a very difficult job. It's one of those no-win situations Unfortunately.

    My neighbour gave me tadpoles she ironically does not have a pond. Where as I do. I'm using a fish tank to care for them. But ultimately, I'd like to introduce them to my pond when they are big enough is that OK? As they came from my neighbours rockery? If do they need to go back to the neighbours rockery?

      I think since you are neighbours there shouldn't be a problem if you put them in your pond. It's close enough that you shouldn't upset the local ecosystem. Did you get any spawn in your pond? It might be issue if you already have a pond full of tadpoles since the pond might not support a load extra. But if not, you should be okay. On the other hand if you didn't get frogs spawning in your pond, there might be a reason for that also. Obviously don't put them in if you have fish.

    Thanks for this series. Can dubias be used to feed the frogs? I have a colony that I feed my bearded dragons, all sizes. Is there any concern about the frogs ingesting the substrate in their setup? Thanks

      I've never tried dubias, but I don't see a reason why they wouldn't be fine. You'll be able to tell if the frogs spit them out or not. I think ingesting a small amount of substrate is to be expected. If it's a soil based substrate I don't think it's much of a problem. But if you have gravel you'd probably be best to make sure the stones are too big for them to accidentally swallow.

    After tiring of endless sessions "weeding" ground elder, I looked into the plant and was delighted to discover that it is edible. I use quotation marks because, as anyone who has tried (and failed) to weed ground elder will know, this is a remarkably determined plant that will survive all but the most determined weeder! Thankfully, I consider it to be delicious, versatile and very good for you. Personally, I tend to pick the leaves right up until they start flowering and mostly use them as I would parsley. I will finely chop and add to almost any dish that would benefit from a fresh, parsley-like freshen-up and blast of colour. I also chuck it into soups, stews, stocks and sauces. As a beginner forager, this was a great plant to start out with because it is quickly identifiable. My tip is to concentrate on sight and feel - you will quickly get an eye for the way that they grow in 'threes' and how they adapt as they get larger. But really focus on the feel between your fingers as you grasp the stem, which is unusual as it is distinctly triangular. After picking and washing the plant, I recommend transferring to a white plate bit by bit to ensure no stray plants made it through. You will be amazed how quickly your brain learns to identify an interloper. Before you know it, it will stand-out like a Nike swish in a bowl of Adidas logos. Hope this helps anyone tempted to give this a whirl and happy foraging!

      Thanks for your tips! I should maybe try eating it again, because I have way more ground elder in my garden now than when I made this video, it has continued to spread everywhere!

    What kind of plants do you use for filtration?

    • @GregsWildlife
      @GregsWildlife Před 2 měsíci

      I don't use any one specific kind of plant. I will just get whatever happens to be available in my local pet store. I go for cold water aquarium plants, so anything suitable for your goldfish tank will be suitable for tadpoles. If you want, you can take some samples from the pond you get your tadpoles from.

      It's a common comment. Many people find they don't eat at first. I wouldn't worry about it too much to start with. If they're hungry, they'll eat. It may be that they're getting enough food from algae in the water. This will quickly change as they get bigger though, so just keep giving them food, always make sure it's there fir when they need it. They'll find it eventually, I'm sure. Good luck!
