In this video, we take a look at the tried and true HobbyZone Mini Apprentice S 1.2m RTF (ready to fly) rc airplane. You can also pick this rc plane up as a BNF (bind and fly) meaning it comes with a Spektrum receiver (Rx) and you will need you own transmitter (Tx). We give build tips and tricks, plus share some knowledge about the hobby. We also teach you how to bind this to the transmitter and make sure the controls are correct. We hope this video not only teaches you how to build this plane, but helps you along the way to becoming a knowledgeable rc plane pilot! Leave any questions or comments in the description box.

I've been out of the hobby for just about 20 years now and now my son is at the age of properly getting into the hobby. This plane and set up is going to be of such tremendous help to both of us. This video was incredibly helpful. So much has changed in the hobby it is truly extraordinary.
Happy new year. It's not a crash, it's an unintentional, unplanned, spotlanding.
It’s not the unintentional, unplanned, spot landing that worries me; it’s the rapid, unscheduled disassembly... 😉
Happy New Year!
@@chadpollman7970 It just reverts back to the kit stage again. ;)
Was in the hobby like 40 years ago. About to take my Apprentice out to the flying field for the first time. Wanted to see the startup. Thanks!
I literally just did my made today about 15 minutes ago and I can’t tell you how happy I was I’m yong not crashing was so amazing 🤩 😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀🤩😀😊😂🛩
I was just considering the mini apprentice. Thank you for reviewing this. I'm definitely buying one. First I'm gaining experience on my Champ but I want to have this plane already. Thank you Nate & Abby for all you do.
I just bought an apprentice for my sons birthday gift. I appreciate your video, giving me the step by step on assembly. Your video on flying in the wind was also great!! Thanks for making the video and posting for a newbie like me.
Really appreciate your beginner series! I started out flying toy rc helicopters in my house and now I’d like to move onto rc airplanes. I’m learning a lot. Keep up the good work!
Thank you guys so much I finally took the leap from ground vehicles just ordered a sport cup S today impatiently waiting for its arrival
Really enjoying the video's. Flew briefly about 38 years ago, and now just retired and am keen to start radio modelling again. Great new technology compared with when i did flying/crashing. :)
You guys are awesome for doing this for us beginner pilots!
You 2 work so well together, if Nate doesn't mention something Abby usually picks up on it and chimes in or vice versa. Always so informative Thank You
Great video. The Apprentices have taught a lot of people to fly, and I think a lot of clubs use them as trainers. I love that you are doing this series for first-time flyers.
The only thing I don’t like about this hobby is how addictive it is
Good timing for this video since my wife got me this model for Christmas. Just have to wait for the weather to break to fly. Might have to get some skis for the snow.
Happy to put some of my RC Saylor stickers on.
Happy New Year to the four of you. Looking forward to more in 2020.
I just ordered mine!!!! Watching your video several times. Thank you
Awesome Sean!! Really appreciate the support!
Watched the two prior videos, great work guys. I've had cheap helicopters, no planes. I've ran numerous hobby grade trucks. Out of the three I like this one the best, because it comes with spectrum radio. Thanks for the videos!
Nate and Abby I watched the video on the beginner Apprentice. You both did a great job we all appreciate it Thanks Michael
Thank you! 👍😁😎⚓
TERRIFIC lesson!! Nice looking plane!! Happy New Year to everyone!! Thanks Saylors for the much needed instructional video!! 💟👍😘
New pilot here, I went ahead with the full-size Apprentice and also using a coach from Horizon Hobby. Also another great video, thank you
Thanks bunches guys! thanks to your videos, I my first plane in the way. I bought a BNF, Volantex, Ranger 2K, and got a Flysky FS-i6X FS I6X, w/ an IA10b recei ver, for radios. I am a flight simmer for years, and my twin is a real steel pilot, so we are going to get into this together!
Great little plane, I retired recently and this plane got me into flying the beginner mode makes it easy to fly and as you get better you can move to the intermediate then advanced modes. I also upgraded to the dx6 radio which I now have a conscendo powered glider on too 😀 I really enjoy your videos keep up the good work!
Thank You for all the Videos. I wish you all a Happy New Year !
Happy new years and a lot of love from AB and Yas in Denmark. All the best to you all in 2020💕
I have the mini apprentice an have flown it a few times. I saw a tip in the You Tube channel by “RC Instructor” to measure the center point on the front and back wing and similar center point on the fuselage. As you put the wing on at the field, you have reference points to make sure the wing is centered on the fuselage every time as you put on the rubber bands. When you have the trimming done, the plane “is supposed to be” consistent from flight to flight.
Thank you. Seeing these steps is helpful. Love watching you test fly but it helps to see the process.
Another great video!!! You guys are awesome!!! Keep up the great work 👍👍
thanks mate you have made me get into flying always been a bit sheepish about flying but u make it sound a lot easy then i ever thought after being into anything with wheels for 20 years I'm going to branch out and give it a go thanks again jas
Thank you so much for helping me build this plane. The website didn’t have anything and building with you this really helped me.
This looks like the plane. I'm going to start with.
I discovered another very good demonstration channel. Very nice, thanks.
I absolutely love your channel!! Keep up the amazing content you guys!! ❤️❤️❤️🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thanks for the beginner videos.
Happy New year RC Saylors!
Just bought this, thank you
GREAT looking plane
I'm getting an aero scout soon and it's realy nice to have someone to watch and see there struggles to know that I'm not alone lol
Thanks for the heart
My first plane! Still love it. touch and gos are a breeze with this. So much ground clearance
Nice plane Ingenious design !!!
Love your vids keep making more
I just did my first ever flight today. I have always wanted to do this. My first flight went well with the Sport Cub S.
Congrats
Have a good and safe New Year to your family
Nice and easy! Great job.
I am a big fan of the Apprentice both large and small. They are a very stable plane and easy to learn on. I still insist on a simulator first before buying any RC plane.
If not, join an air field and let someone teach you. Nice Job you two. Hang in there with the virus deal going on right now. We will all survive this.
Got one hanging on my livingroom wall. Waiting till I get better with my Aeroscout. I really like the scout. Happy New Year to all. ✈⚓
Cool plane Nate🙂
Happy new year to you and your family 🙂
Great looking plane, thanks
✨🤗✨ HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! y'all - hee hee.
Seriously, may the coming year be your BEST in EVERYTHING you do.
Toodles!
I love this airplane.
Thank you Nate Abby and Amila 🤔 and i wouldn't forget about Popeye 🐶, Have a Happy 🎉New Year 🍾 see you Next year 🖐
This is one I was considering on, but then I saw someone take a tape and show the measurements of the Sport Cub and I decided on that one. Made a comment on Gary's channel that I tried it in the two lots behind me, too small of an area(at least for a first timer) Going to have to go to our neighbors (next town) at the park and try it out there. When I did have it up in the air though, it was fun!maybe when I get the hang of this one and want to move up to a bigger plane, maybe, the Carbon Cub will still be available to purchase.
u should always end with crisscross, it will help keep the the straight ones on so they have no way to fall off.
Very good tip 👍⚓😎
THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING THE TROOPS.......Sgt M Skip Pickens USMC Reired
Have a safe and happy NYE, family!
I hav officially purchased it
It’s on its way 😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😎😎😎😄
Good job 👍👍
Anything about buddy radio? How does it work? Do you have to use the same brand does can a 35mhz radio work with 2.4ghz? Would be nice to know if I should teach someone.
Since this is ready to fly can u use the transmitter that comes with kit on different planes if I wanna expand my collection?? Or what would be a good transmitter to get if I wanted to get really into hobby??
새해 복 많이 받으세요 ~~
Have been wanting to get into RC airplanes, being a disabled vet the cost is out of reach. VA disability isn't any way near enough to have these things, but really enjoy watching videos like this and other flying videos. Thanks for the enjoyment
Look for used on Marketplace. I saw a full sized Apprentice with the transmitter for $200. That's a bargain and a half. The transmitter alone is $75. I have purchased 4 Apprentice for between $100 and $160 Only one with Radio. You can find bargains if you look for them .
Sir, from the bottom of my heart I thank you and that is not even enough. Your offer is one I will remember for a long long time, yet Neito, I could not accept the offer. I feel proud to have had such an offer, but can you see also I would feel like I was begging, I need to watch what and how I say things. Again Neito, thank you very much, wish I knew where to come to just shake your hand.
Just keep being the folks you are, and keep the videos coming. Many thanks again.
What plane do you recommend for a adult beginner, who has already learned the basics on a simulator? Thanks.
I've watched your beginners series along with many other of your vids. And have seen a lot of rc vehicles behind you. Do you keep these rc airplanes?
Good video.. I'm looking at buying my first plane. I like this one too. Was looking at carbon club s that yaw did? I do have actual flying experience but never an rc plane...
See ya nxt year !!!! Happy New Year to all !!!!
Nice job Thank You
Glad you enjoyed this video 👍 Thanks for tuning in! ⚓😎
can i buy this plane as a BNF and then buy a radio with more channels for future use on more complicated planes and still be able to use the "safe fly" and "panic recovery". If so which radio do you recommend? To me it seems a bit of a waste to buy the RTF with a 4 channel radio that will not be used on more advanced airplanes.
Thanks for taking your time to explain all this to beginners.
Good information. Enjoying the build videos. For planes a build tutorial then fly is more helpful. Drones, or vehicles don't need that unless you show a build which you are ,or vehicle mods. Like the lights Abby was going to put on one of her's. 😁😁. I really hope to see Abby fly this one.🤔🤔. Happy New Year's Eve, then a Happy New year. 😊😊😊⚓⚓👍👍💘💘👍👍⚓⚓.
What does the binding wire do?
Will an 11.1v 3200mah battery work in this?(if it even fits) the same battery the regular apprentice S uses.
Should I get this or the cabin cub s2??
Wow coordinated Ruder aileron function.
The links do not work in the UK, can you write the full name of the equipment eg the universal transmitter and charger so I can do a UK search, thanks guys great channel and love the beginner stuff
HI bro I have TX16S now need to by training airplane and battery, where to buy?
I just used 2 bands on mine :D
Would you recommend this one or the carbon cub +?
what is the biggest mah battery that will fit in the battery compartment?
Just curious if you guys have flown the larger apprentice yet? I searched through videos, but didn't see it. I'm considering either that plane or the Aeroscout S that seems like a good trainer. I like some of the features of the larger apprentice, but have heard mixed reviews for the reliability of the "virtual" fence gps feature. Several years ago I got the little starter cub (the yellow one that's under 100), but like the idiot I am tried the first flight in a bit of wind and lost orientation. I want to try again, but I'm looking for easiest to fly/train. Thanks for all the informative videos, learned a lot from you already!!
My question is when I buy a RC plain and is PNP version, not BNF version the receiver I choose already come with Safe Select and AS3X technology with in. I'm new with RC airplanes my hobby was Drones but I think airplanes is more fun. With Drones I have to program the betafly program or clearly program airplanes is not like that. That is my question. And by the way I enjoy your RC videos very much keep up the good work.
Can you put a land assist sensor on this specific plane?
My question is this plane, how much range does it have with the dxs radio that the RTF version brings?
Thanks NATE...
Do you know of any props I can use with the mini.all the OEM props seem to be discontinued.
Happy new yeasts guys.
I tried to find a hobby grade charger upgrade for the mini Apprentice what would it be
13:45 isn't it because you have a normal and a reversed servo? Thus it does not matter if you swap the wires when connecting the wing as they will do the opposite of each other. I have this plane for almost 2 years now. Was my first, learned to fly on my own and has only a few minor scratches. That's quality! For the stretchers, use baby powder to keep them in good condition when not flying and always take them off when you are storing the plane. They should only be on there when you go out flying. Always used 4 with loops etc, never got one failed mid flight ;).
Sorry to bother you with a question like this but I have purchased this also. I am in need of a prop but the HobbyZone website says it's been discontinued. Can you make a recommend a replacement prop or some other supplier. Thanks. I enjoy your channel so much and is why I got interested in the plane as a starter for myself.
I’m getting in the hobby with my brother
Horizon hobby also has the RTF Apprentice S 15e
Anyone know of any battery upgrades ,make ,model ,size etc please ?
on my apprentice plane there is not a marked GPS plug location were should i plug it
Hello Nate and Abby just getting into planes From Ohi.
Very awesome David! Have you found the plane that looks like the right fit for you?
my first Big plane is the new Night Timber X
I watch all your videos and I just wanted to tell you guys about the new proposal from faa and this is serious we all need to get together on this it's gonna kill the hobby been flying for thirty year we got 60 days
Especially knowing the transponder runs 2k.
Does the radio have bnf capabilities?
SUPPORT the TROOPS
I'm really interested in the carbon cub S or the EDF p51 mustang RTF or the EDF f16 bnf for my first planes only 1 of those lol pocket book ooohhhhhh!! I know if I buy a BNF for first plane I'll need a transmitter I'll buy the dx6 or a turnigy 6 channel when I get taxes next month WE NEED MORE BEGINNER ONLY VIDEOS PLZ N THNX @TheRcSaylors
how do i use my taranis for these planes
I'm wondering if you can exsplaing how to program the receiver?
What exactly do you mean by "program" the rx my friend? Happy to help if I can! 👍⚓😎
Hi think i,m going to buy one quick question? So if I buy RTF that kit will have everything I need to get up in the air correct? All batteries included with charger and controller
Yes
