- For Christmas I have a very appropriate restoration project for you- a vintage cast iron Santa coin bank, finished just in time for Christmas Eve.
I’m still not sure about what year this particular Santa bank was made, or who the manufacturer was. The first metal coin saving bank seems to have appeared in markets way back in 1886. It was an Uncle Sam bank created by Peter Adams Jr and Charles G. Shepard, and manufactured by Shepard Hardware Company of Buffalo, New York. After that first bank, various other styles of metal banks began to be manufactured. I found a similar Santa savings bank on the internet that was manufactured by Shepard Hardware Company in 1889. This one is vintage, but obviously not that old. There is no production date or manufacturer name stamped on the body of the bank, there is only "Santa Claus" on the metal base. From the appearance, and due to the way it was made, the degree of dilapidation and rust, the approximate production time is most likely around 1900-1930. I have also seen many similar newer products on the market, most of which are replicas and produced in Taiwan, roughly from the 1950's to the 1970's.
During the restoration and disassembly process, a small paper note was found in the bank on which was written $40 and the name/date, Freds, January 91. Apparently, someone bought or sold this bank for $40 back in January 1991.
The biggest challenge in the restoration was painting Santa's body, especially the face. Lots of detail and colors to work with. The eyes were the toughest, and I really didn't do it perfectly. I wish I would have been more careful and precise with those, but I think overall it still turned out petty good.
I was really happy that my 8-year-old daughter Emily and 10-year-old son Eric were involved in the restoration process this time. They really like to draw and paint, and are pretty good at it, so they were really excited to help with getting Santa all dressed up and ready for Christmas!! What kid wouldn't be!

I am not a purist collector. I like vintage items to look as if I purchased them that day. I, for one, appreciate the work you put into cleaning up the mold lines and making this look better than brand new!
Thank you so much for your compliment and comment!👍🎉😊
Beautiful! What an amazing transformation...from a piece of junk to a timeless treasure. Good job! 👍😊

It’s my pleasure and thank you for your compliment and comment!👍👍🎉🍻
I think this will be a cherished holiday heirloom because it was beautifully restored and your children helped so that makes it extremely special for them.
Fantastic, that’s how the Santa Bank should have looked when it left the factory.
Yes that should be original colors. Thank you for the wonderful comment!
Excellent work! This was very interesting to watch! I was also quite impressed that you knew how to put it back together correctly, working properly! Very well done my friend, I am becoming a big fan of all your videos! Please keep up the good work!
Thank you very much for your compliment and support!!!👍🎉👍🎉👍🎉🍻😄
It's hard to believe how many of us fellow Americans treat Christmas, a lot like as if this holiday were nothing sacred. Where are we in the world today if or when we do this? 🎄 😀 😄 🙃 😕 🙄 🎄
I agree with you, the traditional holiday and culture are ignored by many people. 👍🎄🎄
Santa should be wearing white gloves ! 😀 Great job !
Just know it, Thank you so much!👍👍😄
Great restoration and Santa’s has a smile on his face.😍😀

Y'all did a great job on the restoration. I jumped when the music came on in the end, I wasn't expecting it after all the silence!
you very profissionnal restoration 👍😍❤️
Thank you!!!👍🎉👍
Very Good my Friend.....!!...Saludosss
Thank you! Cheers!
Really enjoyed this, it was also nice to get your family involved. Thank You.
After making the comment about the value of the item in its original state, I forgot to say that your restoration was very good, and that you made the item look magnificent. Good job.
But it lost its HISTORY. Very sad, it was nearly totally intact with its great age. More than 120 years old, it appears.
@@emsnewssupkis6453 lol What history? It was dirty and tarnished. Now it has a new lease on life. This isn’t a friggin relic of an age old empire lmao
Love the old metal coin banks like this, especially because of the season. Wonderful workmanship by the whole family on this project. Merry Christmas to you and yours and Happy New Year's also. Texas is watching.
did a nice job of hiding the twain marking
Excellent restoration of an old piece destined to become a family heirloom enjoyed for generations. Wonderful work!
Thank you for the nice compliment and great comment!!!
This was wonderful. And it's not often you get to see the kids help out with stuff like this, so it makes it even more special. They did an amazing job with the paint. Also, what is the song at the end? I really like it.
Sorry for the delay. The song is Flickering’s “Santa is coming”, thank you so much for your wonderful comment!🎉🎉👍👍👏👏
@@ar_restoration 😁 thank you!
This is cool! First time I've seen Santa Claus with a basket instead of a sack.🤔
Very well done!!!
Maybe basket can be loaded more presents for kids : ) Thank you for your great comment!

Hey AR

👍Thank you for your wonderful comment! Sorry for my delayed response.
@@ar_restoration
You are welcome🙂
Great Job!
It’s always difficult when you take off the original finish of an antique and restore it with new paint. You of course have diminished the value of the antique, but you’ve increased the look of the item that you have left. My opinion is that if you are going to keep the item and enjoy it, you should have it look as good as possible. If you intend to resell it, leave it alone. The value of the original finish is always worth more than the restored item.
Santa looks like a new man thanks to you. His sack looks like a cupcake for some reason.
Yes, it looks like a cupcake : ) Thank you for your comment!!!
Not a sack ...... a basket.
Merry Christmas from United States. Nice job on Santa’s nose job, LOL.
Awesome restoration. Love Santa stuff. Am a Christmas Eve baby. 😊
Wow, it would be your birthday and Christmas present!👍
@@ar_restoration I get that sometimes though mom keeps them separate. 😊
Very nice restoration! I also make videos about restorations myself and know how much work there is in something like that! Did you manage several ..
Good job! This is a really neat change from vehicles. Merry Christmas to you and your family!
👍🎉Thank you for your compliment and comment! Merry Christmas!🎁🎄
Good job! 👍👍
Стал лучше нового 👌 Отличная работа 👍
👍Thank you!
Hi beautiful restoration good job well done
Thank you for your comment! 👍
Very Nice
Thank you!👍😊
@@ar_restoration my pleasure and have a nice day.
Giving Santa a nose job.
Can't believe you didn't put on a coat of primer.
It was first time to paint it , I didn’t pay attention to use primer, thank you for reminding!
It's a funny old world, how repainting something to make it look new again can ruin it. 😳
Belo trabalho
Thank you!!!👍🎉🌹
👏👏👏💝💝💝
Thank you!👍🎉😊
Wonderful craftsmanship. One question do some of the restorations on CZcams actually decrease the value of the item? I couldn’t help thinking the Original patina was beautiful
I think some real antique should not be restored and it also based on personal hobby and the value of the item. This item I restored is not real antique, I bought it about $30
Awesome thanks for sharing, what type of paint did you use to repaint? Looks great be blessed
I just used regular paint BEHR small sample cans, where I bought from HomeDepot. Thank you for your comment! 👍
@@ar_restoration you are welcome thanks for getting back to me ☺️ have a blessed day
WD40 step 3: saturate area, let soak for several minutes
Everybody: NO
Amazing job! Only I couldn’t get over the fact that his hands should have been black since he wears black gloves… other than that it turned out great!
Maybe you are right, the hands should have gloves, thank you for your comment!!!👍👍
👏👏👏👏👏👍👍👍🇬🇧
Glad you like it. Thank you!👍🎉🌹
Nice Job! Great channel you have, looking forward to more restorations! I just started myself
Great starting! Hope you have wonderful time and I am also look forward your amazing restorations!
it seems to me that during the production phase they seem to neglect the need to file the sharp edges off these die casts..like it just DID NOT fit into their production schedule..
I have to say, it's one of the best restored I've seen. How much for it?
👍👍Thank you for your wonderful comment!!! But I don’t want to sell it 😊
@@ar_restoration I wouldn't sell it either. Looking forward to another restoration.
Original finish is much nicer and more valuable.
I have to say that it’s sad to take the original factory paint off...It was perfect the way it was and perfectly distressed.
But that’s just my opinion.
I partly agree with you, as a collector who want to maintain the inherent appearance and age of the cultural relics, but as a restorer who always want to give the item a new life and appearance : )
True, but it wasn't an original example anyway.
Yeah, but even the guy on Antique Roadshow would call that poor condition. This gets another life, reborn.
Was that a $40 i.o.u. note? Too bad u can't collect!
Yes, there was a $40 note in the chimney. I bought it at $29 and I think it is not a real antique worth for collecting
Why do people use WD40 instead of a proper penetrating oil? It’s like using a pair of pliers instead of a spanner to undo a hex headed bolt.
This should be an easy and fast method : ) Thank you for your comment!👍
$40.00 Freds Jan '91
Yes, that’s 30 yeas ago
Är du Svensk ?
Sorry, I am not
@@ar_restoration That's ok, I just heard something sounds like Swedish from the background noise, good restorations, love your work👍🏻
@@Garabetho Thank you so much for your compliment and comment!!!👍🎉🍻

It's a shame to watch the value of these old banks going south when the original paint is removed....☹
I am not antique collector, as a restorer I had to fix it…
Ummm not sure but didn't you just devalue an antique by restoring it? it looked good restored but also not restored as well... Mmmmm conundrum
I thinks if it was a real antique with a higher value, it would be considered carefully whether to restore it. This metal Santa coin bank I bought from EBay, it is not real antique made before 1920.
@@ar_restoration well thats cool just remembering a person went on an antique show to show off their silver candle holder and that they did a good job cleaning to so it would shine .. the appraiser said its only worth the value of the silver now but if you would have kept it with the original condition its conservative estimate would have been 250,000 dollars perhaps higher .. just makes ya think ya know? .. you did an awesome job on the santa tho so cool
@@davidens8204 👍Yes you’re right, there are some antiques that could not be easily restored, that will reduce their value. It should be cautious about some items to be restored, especially some antiques, people should evaluate their age and value before restoration.
Ruined this fine antique!!
Yes, as an antique collector the toy was ruined, but as a restorer it got new life. Thank you for the comment!!!
