Absolutely brilliant transformation. Oscar well deserved on both counts.
Gary Oldman isn't the fist guy that springs to mind to play Churchill. The casting team know their job, clearly. His incredible acting skills are an unexpected surprise. Totally brilliant.
And the make-up guy...huge round of applause. True artist
Well deserved Oscar for Kazuhiro Tsuji and Gary Oldman
And David Malinowski
An amazing coordination between acting and makeup performances.
dude, his name is Kazuya Mishima, dont write a generic sounding japanese name please, its racist.
@@chimchimcharoo56 but his name is Kazuhiro Tsuji, that's even written under him
Gary Oldman is such an amazing actor , he is superb !
It deserved every single award they got👏
The end result was so incredibly realistic looking!!!
Watched the movie and felt like Winston wasn't played by Gary Oldman.
I didn't even knew that was Gary Oldman but i kept thinking myself, god the acting is so incredibly good, they should really give him more roles. lol :')
is that a complement or not?
fantastic work from all concerned, the hours it takes is phenomenal and the patience required for the actor and putting on that body form is terrifying without panicking, well done all superb.
The brilliance of creative artists changes the world.
Agreed!
Now we got full hd 4k on a big screen these guys have really had to put a stunning effort into their work and its been great watching the big leap in practical effects over the last few years...
Wow the transformation is amazing!
You didn't bugger it up! You and Gary did superb outstanding work! It was like looking into the past. In a very personal way. And captured the man that everyone knows in a way no one knows. So well done!
If Christian Bale had played Churchill, he would literally get so fat
True facts. He did so for Vice.
The makeup team are amazing!
Thank you for posting this. Finally, I found the video I've been looking for, a detailed account of the prosthetics. I cannot believe even the DVD doesn't have this very enlightening aspect of the film in as much detail. The only thing it didn't answer is how many hours Oldman spent each day in the make-up chair.
During a brief SAG award carpet interview he confirmed that he was in the make-up chair for 5 hours, but clarified that it was upwards of 4 hours [starting around 3-4 AM with shaving Gary's head] putting on the prosthetics [about 70 pieces, including 'a fat suit with intricate lacing to pull together layers of blubber'] and one hour removing them. Amazing transformation. Considering that principle photography on the film lasted for 48-54 days (depending upon days required for Gary Oldman), it was quite a commitment [200+ hours] for (makeup artists) David Malinowski, Ivana Primorac, Lucy Sibbick, Kazuhiro Tsuji and Gary Oldman.
I now belive in magic, a work of art by true craftsmen (and women) no cgi
The amount of detail in the work is mind blowing--true artitsts, well deserved Oscar.
Look at all that Churchill skin!
Incredible. Im watching the movie now and cant believe how real Churchill looks.
And WOW...that Lucy Sibbick is beyond gorgeous.
The wanting to get something right for a purpose of need, has no better example than this. Wonderful.
When I saw the movie I didn’t see Gary.. I saw Winston.. The movie was that good. I was completely convinced which is hard to do for me.. I am one who can be totally pulled out of a movie by one little inaccurate part.. it has to be accurately depicted otherwise it is a comedy because I am going to s-- talk the entire movie after that.. Very good acting and very good behind the scenes people on this film.. it was fantastic
What an AMAZING TALENT they have all been born with !!
Beautiful work, great spec. Effect Artist, Kazuhiro you deserved the Oscar
I think y’all are absolutely brilliant! ❤
That woman is gorgeous
This is magnificent
Amazing!
Just marvelous!
He says "Winston Churchill" like "Wisdom Charger"
how remarcable, this never ceases to impress me.
nice movie and good cast xd🐴🐴🐴🐴🐴
Katsuhiro Thusji es, sin ninguna duda , uno de los más grandes maquilladores de la Historia.....
i love that they made him look like winston, but then it was too much like winston, in a movie about winston, so they had to go back to make him look less like winston, in a movie about winston.
Increíble!!!
These guys have the patience...
It’s insane
À noter également que Lucy s'est maquillée tout spécialement pour l'interview... ET QUEL MAQUILLAGE !!!
Pretty outstanding. To be fair 50% of the Oscar Gary gotshould go to makeup.
Bullshit. This amazing makeup meant absolutely nothing without an extraordinary actor beneath it. If anything, it's way harder to act though the heavy makeup
Профессионалы своего дела!!!
Cool
Remarkable
So what we have seen in the Mission:Impossible TV series in almost every episode is possible after all.
Nothing is worse in film than bad 'aging' makeup. Being an old man myself it jumps out to me...
Success always involves countless hours of work....usually by many different people. Successful creatives are the ones who can jump up in the morning to go do that work....and let others do theirs..... morning after morning after morning. Most mornings you can't see any of the fruit. You just have to believe in the work....and yourself......and those who do what THEY do.
Bill Petersen why....are you....pausing....all....the...time...?
Try speaking without ever pausing. It is a fundamental element of speech.
Bill Petersen We use commas and full stops not ellipsis. It feels unnatural to have that long a pause. A comma would be more suited for your comment.
I am not one of your "we" people. Texting stuff........of the modern age...... try to keep up.
Commas and full-stops are not a modern trend,we have used them for centuries. A ellipse means there is a long pause. See I used a full-stop there to create a short and natural pause. If instead i finished a sentence like this...the pause feels awkward and drawn out. When you speak you do not take that long a pause in-between sentences. Lastly what are you on about , "texting stuff...of the modern age" what time period are you living in? I did not use any text shorthand in my comment, so why are you making that argument?
Why were they not reusable from day to day?
Why not using the 'performance capture' technique developed by James Cameron (Avatar) ?
Roger Nevez because its difficult and very expensive to make CGI human skin look convincing
+Daniel Greig
Avatar looked very convincing 9 years ago.
Roger Nevez yeah but they were blue and looked alien so our brain accepted it but the closer you get to human the worst it looks because the human face has so much detail its hard to replicate and if only a few details are off it's creepy because our brain is trying to warn us that what we see isnt human,Look up "The Uncanny Valley" for a good example look at Tarkin in star wars Rouge One in a screen shot it looks fine but when he talk because the face doesn't move perfectly it becomes weird or creepy looking
+Daniel Greig
Both Carrie Fisher and Peter Cushing in Rogue One were not as convincing as Avatar.
I'm wondering if James Cameron could had done better or if it is really just a matter of alien blue skin.
Looking back at Avatar, there are some scenes that I was pretty sure the Na'vi characters were either live actors with tons of makeup or animated robots due the high level of skin details. Example: Neytiri, as a Na’vi, and Jake Sully, as a human, actually touching onscreen. However, in the extended footage of the movie, the crew commented that this was the most difficult scene of all but still done with CGI.
Roger Nevez yep definitely a case of it not being human VS alien thats what the Uncanny Valley is thats why robots look creepy when they're ment to look human but normal when it's clear there a robot
To those who think this is great, look at what has done in Paa..
i enjoy this film start to finish, Dunkirk i stop watching after 20 min
He still looks nothing like him in the film
Or hire John Lithgow.
I watched and just didn't feel it was churchill You need ether a really good look of churchill which Garys eyes are piercing and churchills were tried and deep in thought You need Churchills voice deeper bassed with high lifts
He admits in the piece that the eyes were completely wrong. You can't just use a body-double....because most of them can't act.
freakyflow You should only watch lookalikes and voice mimics. This film could have used someone who looks and sounds exactly like Churchill and ended up a pathetic joke because few actors can inhabit a character like Oldman
CHURCHILL Was a Hero for Brits But He was same like Hitler. Because of him *Bengal Famine* Happened in which 4 Million People Died Due to Starvation. And When Asked to Look Into the matter.. He SHamelessly Replied.. "Has Gandhi Died Yet"..? Inhumane!
Wow this is so relevant to the "makeup featurette" of Darkest hour. Thank you for the enlightment.
Brilliant make-up. Lousy film.
Amazing!
