  • @natalie651
    @natalie651 Před 6 lety +37

    Churchill was an amazing writer and speaker. He loved people. When EVERYONE thought Hitler, was a joke, he warned them about him. When Chamberlain signed in Munich, he was one of the only people who opened criticized the Agreement, even though that wasn't the popular point of view. He warned everyone about Stalin, too. He wrote articles against racism and anti-Semitism back in the 1920s. For comparison, our fucking American President can't condemn Nazis and what they stand for today and Churchill was condemning them back in the 1920s! He pushed and pushed for America to get in the war. You could say he single-handedly saved the world from the Nazis because if he never existed, we may have lost WWII. When the Nazis bombed England, he walked out to the bombed areas and helped to reconstruct to give his people courage. THERE IS NO ONE LIKE HIM. WE DON'T HAVE LEADERS LIKE THIS ANYMORE.

      I loathe Stephen Galloway as the moderator. His tone is always snide and condescending and he THINKS he is the smartest guy at the table every time. True to form, he feels it’s his duty to “inform” Oldman that people in England have mixed feelings about Churchill, assuming that Oldman isn’t intelligent enough to understand that himself. Plus it is rude of him to insult the Churchill character that Oldman has poured months of blood, sweat and tears into researching and acting. I just love Oldman’s comeback, rattling off a laundry list of Churchill’s accomplishments. Look who got schooled.

    I have had the privilege of working with Mr. Oldman, of sharing a meal and more than a few stories with him. He is as engaging a human being as he is an artist. Which makes this comment so difficult to write. History has seen fit to distort the truth surrounding Mr. Churchill for reasons that are hard to discern. Does the truth obstruct their narrative? Is it because the truth would make for a terrible commercial enterprise? No matter.
    What saddens me is that I am sure Mr. Oldman did his due diligence, as it relates to the research he conducted to portray Mr, Churchill. What saddens me more deeply, though, is that there is so much bad history out there that even a scrupulous person would be so abjectly misdirected from the truth that is so contrary to the life he portrayed, adding an insane momentum to a runaway train that needs no assistance.

    From a 1916 letter written by Winston Churchill about the ongoing First World War:‘I think a curse should rest on me - because I love this war. I know it’s smashing and shattering the lives of thousands every moment, and yet, I can’t help it, I enjoy every second of it’.
    There's your hero.

      Doesn't mean he wasn't a hero or a good person. That's a thing many soldiers go through. Even the most heroic and kindest among them.

      That quote is from somebody who delighted in the massacre of a generation and was thrilled by warfare. That's not a good person and it's not a hero.

      The body of work counts more than the individual performance, it's been like this for a long while. I think Gary will definitely win.
