I ran into William Defoe at my local laundromat. It was just the two of us. I starred at him and asked the obvious: "Aren't you...?" He said yes. I apologized for disturbing him. He said, 'We're in a laundromat.' I loved the fact that their was no artifice no ego. We had a wonderful conversation. I ran into him again and his wife was with him. He introduced her to me. If I had my wits about me I would have asked him and his wife if they had time for a coffee. He was gracious and totally genuine. By the way, the laundromat is right down the street from my small apartment in Paris.

a great story and just that one line "we're in a laundromat..." says so much about him and says alot about the difference between an actor, an artist and craftsman and a celebrity who can't be bothered by the serfs and common folk. An artist is one of the common folk, which is also how he hones his craft. Great story.

I wish I could remember it, but I was like 2 at the time. Defoe and his family stayed at a lodge that my parents managed for a family gathering or reunion or something. When they checked in, they interrupted my dad and uncle watching Platoon. They were flabbergasted because they didn't initially recognize the name when they reserved their place at the lodge. I have a photo of him holding me. My parents talk about how much of a gracious person he is.

The fact that Willem Dafoe doesn’t have an Oscar yet tells me the industry really lacks acknowledgment for originality. He’s legendary. For the vas character he has portrayed and created.

Let's face it there are many great actors and actresses out there that don't get anyway near an Oscar. It really doesn't matter it's what the general public think that matters.
Same with critics. So called American critics didn't actor favourable to 'Dead Man's Shoes', one of my favourite all time films. But on rotten tomatoes 50,000 members of the general public gave it a rating of 91%.
The Oscars are about what studio or director pays the most, always has and always will be. Talent helps them sell it. that's it.

Tom Hanks. When everybody else is hesitant, he just says it. So much honesty. I love him for that.
Tom Hanks seems like a man from another time. Just a real, stand-up guy. Those are few and far between these days.
And I love how he says that acting isn't a big deal. I heard him say something similar in a different interview. Some actors make it sound like it's so glamorous, and he's like no, people either like you and like the story or they don't. And if they don't, and you still want to do it, then just try again.

William Dafoe's hair is as legendary as he is.

I do agree with this but I believe they should've kept Boyega and Franco for another Roundtable. They could've gotten a plethora of other actors that can rightfully sit at the table with these absolute legends, like: Pacino, De Niro, Streep, Denzel, Morgan Freeman. The list can go on.

Sam is like a younger, American version of Gary Oldman. There is an intensity in him that masquerades as humour in him. Their charisma is off the scale.

Dafoe seems to have a very high evolution of empathy and human understanding and it always shines through in his characters. Oldman is also mystic level in his chosen profession, surgical mind, the villain.

And with that comes wisdom!

Sam rockwells demeanor is like that of a student just dying to pick their brains. So modest and inquisitive. Also it was great when Tom and him reminisced about the Green Mile and Tom talked about how excited he would be when watching Sam act in that.

I find Gary Oldman very different from the rest, though I know they're all great but there's something about Gary that's very unique.
Gary Oldman has been my favourite actor since i saw Bram Stokers Dracula when i was 13 (im 36 now) He is probably the most talented & diverse actor on this planet.
Tom Hanks is my second favourite actor of all time , so this Table Talks is my favourite one to watch.

I loved _The Florida Project_ so much, I watched it three times in a row, and then I watched it a few days later. It’s such a wonderful movie-it has a sweetness of a different era.
I can't believe I missed this... Sam Rockwell and Gary Oldman, together... My head just exploded. I've put these two guys on a pedestal as being above and beyond any other actors of our generation. They are the upper echelon, in a league of their own.
Same. Obviously, Hanks and Dafoe are legends, but Oldman and Rockwell I still find to be hugely underrated for what they deliver. Rockwell possibly being the most underrated of the pair.

if only Heath Ledger were still alive it would be so nice to watch and hear him in a table with these incredible actors especially with Gary Oldman who he played with in The Dark Knight. both had experienced portraying dark characters like The Joker and Norman Stansfield. that would be such a great honor to hear them especially Heath on how he prepaired and the whats and ifs of portraying each roles as an actor on his own opinion.💁🏻♀️🥺

Willem Dafoe has always been Oscar worthy, I hope the Academy Awards recognise him soon. I felt he should've got the Oscar for At Eternitys Gate.
I need Sam Rockwell to host as an interviewer. His questions are spot on and he flows well with the anecdotes and clearly displays genuine interest.
He would've done better than the current interviewer, that's for sure. It felt like he was disinterested and running a checklist of questions, not really engaging.
Sam came in passionately and empathically, and had so much to say when he spoke.
Plus he’s pretty hot!

These roundtables and the way the interviewers facilitate conversation are so massively underrated. I learn more from watching 10 minutes than I could in a lifetime of those fluffy late night interviews...
These roundtables are the most amazing things to watch. The conversation, the interaction between actors/actresses that may have never been in movies/tv shows before, it's great... the hour talk seems like 15 minutes.
Wow, just look at where John Boyega is. A few years ago he was just another young guy on a South London neighbourhood a bus ride away now he is seated among the finest and influential actors in Hollywood. The power of chasing your dreams eh?

Willem describes perfectly how being passionate about a role creates the possibility to do it correctly. What a perfect response to Franco's question. I'm in awe of that man.

I like how eventually they started interviewing each other. It flowed much more smoothly than with the HR guy jumping from subject to subject.
I thought the same thing! I loved watching all the actors talk amongst themselves. Much more interesting than the interviewer interrupting them and driving the conversation all over the place.
@@infinitesummers you still need to have some one there to guide the conversation but the editing makes it seem significantly worse then it actually is because they're trying to cut out every second if "dead air" time instead of letting the conversation end then go on to the next question.
I do like all of these actors. They are all great. But I must say... wow to Gary Oldman, the way he talks, humble and with respect and integrity and to find out about his hobby. This man is and will always be my alltime favorite.

@@itzelmayoral729 I think it's just that they wanted to make sure they didn't speak clumsily. It's a huge, heavy topic, so a quick response could have come across as glib. And of course it's uncomfortable: every male actor these days has gotta be wondering "did I miss an opportunity to do something about this? Have I been in a situation where I ignored a sign and let one of my female colleagues get harrassed (or worse)?". Besides anything else, Tom's probably the most experienced interviewee out of all of them, so it's not surprising he has the confidence to jump in pretty quickly. I read it more as the others wanting a moment to think about it, rather than wanting to keep just quiet
Also, after Tom's answer, the interviewer asks "Does everyone agree? ... James?" LOL.

Tom was the only one that actually addressed the question about sexual harassment, all the other actors looked uncomfortable and avoided it. It's nice when an actor is good at his job, but when they're good and decent in real life, like Tom Hanks, well, that's everything.

Still watching the video and haven't reached that part yet but both James Franco and Gary Oldman have done some shady stuff to women in the past. Which would explain their silence on the subject.

to be fair to the interviewer, I think a lot of the 'interruptions' were created in the editing room to keep the segment under an hour

If that's actually the case then the editors are REALLY phoning it in or they hate the interviewer. There are so many opportunities to cut a story short in the edit that don't make it look like the actors are being cut off by the interviewer

My biggest takeaway: Willem Dafoe is a beautiful human being.
Gary Oldman is so humble and lovely! You can feel how proud he is of his new work, not in an arrogant way, but as someone who sees how privileged he is.

From what I've seen in these roundtable videos, they seem to always include actors at different points of their careers because it allows us to see very different perspectives. I think he did great here!

Willem Dafoe and Gary Oldman are two of the greatest actors around. Brilliant performances while losing themselves (and nearly unrecognizable) in some of their roles.
I recall the first time I saw them together in the movie Basquiat. It was cinematic nirvana.
When you are sitting at a table with a number of performing powerhouses, I think most young actors would freeze up.
They would focus only on the awe of the moment.
John Boyega, I am very pleased to see the opposite. He embraced the opportunity to speak and to listen with his peers.
He was very open, and the others around him listened to what he had to say and responded.
I am very impressed for such a young person and actor in that sort of company.
The way James looks at Dafoe at 2:05 is like hes still in a father son thing from Spider-man :D

So even if the other stuff is fake people are going to wonder what his stance is I think. And if he is innocent.... he should be in favor of taking about it imo

I get frustrated when the interviewer cut off & interupted Gary Oldman speaks for the 3rd time. I dint count how many more after that... Gary Oldman has so much to share and i believe audience and the young actors would love to hear from him.
I love the friendliness and atmosphere with every one at the table.
