Brutal Portage | 5-Day Canoe Trip in Killarney

  • There's no easing into this canoe trip! Our 5-day backcountry adventure in Killarney Provincial Park kicks-off with a back breaking portage up 'The Pig'. Known as one of the toughest portages around, The Pig is especially tough at the beginning of the trip, since we're carrying all our food for the next five days. The pain of the portage is softened by the knowledge that it places us deep within one of the most beautiful canoe tripping parks in the world.

    We had quite a bit of portage in the Kenai area in Alaska. Nothing makes the fish more worth it. I’ll remember it the rest of my life

    What a joy to watch, Ken and James! Looks like Killarney Outfitters did a great prep job for you. Bravo on that first portage and paddle!

    In that neck of the woods, I find "Silver Peak" is the most difficult (w/canoe and pack) portage in the park.....higher elevation and longer distance the biggest contributing factors. The reward, panoramic views of the entire area, unless cloud cover is below the peak on the day of. When done in the fall (w/canoe and pack - last week park is open), ice and snow add another element of risk. As you are aware, a 5 day trip isn't enough time in the park, but it does provide lasting memories. Well packaged video!

    • @PaddleTV
      @PaddleTV  Před 3 lety

      Unfortunately I didn't. FYI: We started at 'the pig' portage at the end of Baie Fine. We then paddled through Three Narrows Lake, and then made our way to Great Mountain Lake, and then Gayle Lake. From there, we portaged to David Lake and then to Johnnie Lake where we finished.

  • @jeffm5808
    @jeffm5808 Před rokem

    i have done the pig from three Narrows it was too bad the 3 km portage into three narrows was more difficult.
    i didn't find the pig that bad

    If James has 50 years experience 🤔🤣.
    He should have planned it all. I love how James thinks he knew shit from the ages of 3 to 16, so let's take off 13 years. More like 37, thanks for coming out.

      @@PaddleTV Yes I sure am. There was no light weight gear 50 years ago when I did several trips north of Lk Superior. The Pukaskwa River Was a killer long before it was a National Park our canoe weight was 80 Lbs alone. Plus our 70 Lb packs . That’s what I meant. The Speckled trout fishing was amazing. But the black fly’s were nasty. Then paddle back to Rossport on Superior was tricky also. Cheers thanks 🇨🇦👍

    • @packratty
      @packratty Před 3 lety

      I was in a party were we did the 1.5 km "unofficial" portage from OSA to George, which seemed steep enough to me, and one of the canoes was a 70 lb Grumman aluminum job - thankfully not the one I had to carry.

  • @lucassmith2504

    Looks awesome. Was a little disappointed that you just show up with just your tooth brush and there wasn't any planning for a 5 day adventure.

    • @PaddleTV
      @PaddleTV  Před 3 lety +2

      I didn't actually just show up with my toothbrush :). You 'could' do that. That being said, I did 100% rely on them for organizing the meal plan for our trip. I've never done that before, and I'm glad I did too. I picked up some cool new tricks that I'll adapt to my own meal planning. I have to admit... it felt a little like cheating... but it was awesome! :)

    Looks like fun! Thank you for choosing not to wear face masks at any time during this video. Covering your face in public is disordered and dehumanizing.
