The Winds of October - Killarney Solo Canoe Trip - 4K

- A chilly October 5 day solo canoeing and hiking adventure in Killarney.
I get a little bit of everything in this one, including the first snow of the season and some wicked winds that almost catch me out while crossing David Lake.
I hike up Silver Peak and take in the amazing 360 view from the top. The La Cloche Range is about 2.3 million years old and these peaks used to be higher than the Rocky Mountains!
Today, Silver Peak is about 550m high, similar to the CN Tower in TO.
I also try out a new shelter / full coverage tent for my hammock... The Onetigris Rockdomus.

How do you not have more subs... some of the best camping content on CZcams.
Agreed
I just recently found this channel and I’m sticking around 👍🏻
THanks! I could probably have more subs I suppose but I just don't post that often and rarely do all those things you're supposed to do to get more subs 😄. I'm pretty busy with everything else in life and I like to take time with the edits etc. It's ok though, I like it when folks hear about it from other people and then come back if they like it. Thanks again for watching.
Thank you.@@thepriest98
Thank you!@@alanbierhoff6831
Another beautifully filmed and documented trip. Those were some scary wind gusts! Handled with skill 👍
Thanks buddy! I love watching your vids... great pace, lots of attention to the shots and they always feel like a trip when I watch
its lovely to watch an old hippy photographer like myself make a fool of himself willingly, such a hoot dude.
Beautiful cinematography, scenery, and fun running commentary! That weather was something, more like mid-late November than October! 🙂 I learned something too: keep your camera and lens close at hand when you're handling your other lens.
Thank you very much!
OMG, this is exactly what we wanted. Thank you so much, Jason.
A year in the making, but it was well worth the wait.😍.
Thanks for the kind words and for watching!
Another beautiful video. We always like the way you put your films together. Perfect way to start a Sunday morning - Keenan and Ashley. 🛶
Thanks guys, I feel the same about your vids
Great video Jason, well filmed, well edited, and pleasant to watch as always! I love the quick timelapse shots with the ambient music, it keeps things moving and interesting. I felt the fear on your windy return paddle from the hike. Winds like that on open lakes can be utterly terrifying! Thanks so much for the work you put into all your videos...cheers friend!
Pete
THanks Pete! Really happy that peeps are still watching. The wind... yeah I should not have got caught out like that... should have known better and stuck 10 ft off shore / took more time. It got a little hairy there for a bit.
My man!!! Im gonna have to go see silver peak myself now… ;) that looked awesome! And yeah I felt the same way about into the wild. I’ve always loved the story personally and after watching the documentary it does explain a few things! But to this day the final quote of the movie/book is still one of my favorite: « happiness is only found when shared » Cheers brother!
THanks Marty!
Just enjoyed my Saturday morning after a long ass week with a coffee and your new video. Fantastic stuff as usual. Love the attention to detail and time you take to create an amazing atmosphere. See you on the next one Jason. 👍
Thanks Adam! Glad you're still with me. I really liked your last vid with Josh, hope to see more soon (although who am I to rush people .. haha)
@@JasonIrwinTumblehome absolutely. I have 2 vids in the queue. Should be released in November. Taking my sweet a$$ time as usual lol. Let me know if you want to try that hammock setup in the winter! Thing looks awesome! Talk soon bud.
The family and I just had our first Killarney experience. Hiked to Grace Lake from Charlton, and it just hit me, "i need to see more of this park"
Thanks again Jason for taking us along on another adventure. Been faithfully watching from the Redemption Trout.
Awesome! Thanks for sticking around :-)
Another great one, appreciate the effort you put in and keep it up Mr Irwin.
Thanks Mike!
Love your videos Justin and always worth the wait!! THX CHEERS !!!
Sorry Jason😢
all good... Justin is my sons name... and my folks were really close to naming me Justin. :-)
Lol my sons name is Justin hahahah!!!
ha! perfect@@ianlindsey3616
Wow, you look like that dude on the Ricola commercial with those longjohns and shorts. Lol.😊 when you were on top of silver peak.
haha... I should have done a "Ricola" call into the wind up there
Thanks for bringing us along!
np thanks!
Perfect motivation for next month 👍
THanks Scott!
I have always enjoyed your videos and videography. You have the perfect voice for narration. Solo trips are the best.
thank you!
Best line ever “…with the wrong lens in my hand !!!” 😂 As we sit here all beat up from our APP Louisa canoe trip, coffee in hand, again you provide the best backcountry storytelling videos. Thanks again for bringing us along on your adventures. 👍🏼🥰 🛶 🏕️
Thank you! Thanks for watching.
Always the best, great trip Tumblehome! Nice to see lots of birds, grouse especially. At our camp the grouse have been missing in action , lots of fishers, foxes and coyotes, they have them all cleaned up. Till next time! Thank you for sharing, Bob , 😊👌🏕️🏕️
Thanks! I noticed a lot of fishers and Martins when I was in Algonquin this past september... couple of foxes on the drive up as well.
@@JasonIrwinTumblehome seems to be a higher population trend, as it ebbs and flows . 😊👌
I was just getting twitchy about a new video and like magic, here we are! Thank you for another excellent video!
Thats the tumble twitch! thanks for watching
You stayed on my favourite site on David! I have done “The Boys” loop a few times in early spring (David, Peter, Harry) and that’s been my first night site each time. As always, a beautifully composed and inspiring video Jason. Thanks for helping to keep me sane during the cold winter months.
Thanks for watching! Yeah thats a nice big comfy site.
So beautiful, love your editing style and humour, just stunning imagery man, well done!
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it!
You got it bud! Itching so bad to get back to your beautiful country !!@@JasonIrwinTumblehome
I really enjoyed this one. Very well shot and edited. Isn’t it nice to have all day to explore and film? Watching you get blown around on David was tough to watch, but you handled it expertly. I was just at The Peak last weekend. What a glorious place. Cheers!
thanks!... yes its nice to be able to just travel and document as I go. Killarney never gets old!
My wife and I were in the northeast part of Algonquin around the same time..we had lots of rain and lots of fun times.
Such a great video. Keep doing these videos, I only get one canoe trip a year but this makes me feel like i've been along with you. Amazing. Thank you. You really do have the best backcountry videos on youtube. cheers
Thanks, will do!
Love the rain fly
Fantastic job again Jason. Your production and cinematography are exemplary and always worth the wait. I love your approach to trips and how you really immerse yourself in your locale, taking the time to explore instead of just getting the miles in. Well done sir 🫡
Much appreciated!
My sister's and I have watched all your videos. Tonight I got the text from one saying, "A New Tumblehome!!!!!"
So, we all watched together, separately, in our own homes. Always beautiful, love the dry humor, the time-lapse, the stills, the sounds, and the passion. I've always wondered if you're a graphic designer by trade; I was all my working life (very old now, not much time left). You just strike me as such ....you're probably a school administrator.....no way
He he... I do creative editing mostly for CBC... promos and social stuff. I dabble in photoshop and AfterEffects but dont dig too deep. I'm glad you are enjoying the vids! thanks for watching
Good to see you back, quality over quantity,
👌
Once again, I am in awe of your photography and videography skills. We completed close to that same trip in 2011, just a beautiful area with the coloured foliage. Thank you Jason 😊
Thanks for watching. Glad you liked it. It's always neat to watch trip vids of areas you've been to.
What a beautiful adventure you had! The views from atop the mountain were gorgeous 👍 That wind on the lake was crazy, nature it seems, can be quite humbling at times. HOLY CRAP ON A CRACKER! That Owl was LOUD!🤣
Da Plane! Da Plane!
Now that’s a nice trick you use with starting the fire, suspending the kindling on those twigs, I’ll have to remember that.
Thanks for bringing us along, cheers 🍻
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it. Yeah that wind was a humbler!... prob should have stuck closer to shore and then I could have waited it out a bit.
@@JasonIrwinTumblehome
Watching how you paddled in that wind taught me some knew techniques like, how not to get blown over by the wind 🤣
@@UncleDan58 🤣
Amazing video, mate, you sure deserve much more likes! Cheers from Argentina!
Another awesome video and trip! Well done!! Makes me want to go back to Killarney this fall.
Your vids are always a visual feast... thank you!
Glad you like them!
There is a tap up there near the top. they installed it in 1936. it feeds all the lakes of Killarney. if it wasn't running there would just be big dry holes instead of lakes.
I need new boots too. I just finished a 10 day in there and lost my big toenail on day 2 for the second time in 2 years. the other was while doing my first winter camp. I hate hiking boots.
crafty way to start a fire! good thinking.
What? I have never heard that before... must be one hell of a tap. Is it like a redirected spring or something?
Glad I stumbled across your videos. Enjoyed your sense of humour and you have a great camera presence. Those winds were a bit crazy, good you made it back safely. Thanks for sharing your trip. :) :)
Thank you!
I was headed to Killarney this past week but had to cancel due to covid. I really enjoyed watching this and hope I can get out there next year. Thanks for sharing.
Yeah it's still kickin around... neighbour had it recently. Hope you're feeling better and back at it soon!
Oh my goodness! Where do i begin! First things first i subbed right away. I really like your style there sir. I also enjoy watching you guys north of us control a canoe like you guys do. It’s an art form and you guys exhibit it well! I’m a kayaker personally. Set up and geared up for pretty much anything salt and fresh. Quiet water only for me. Im 52. I’m trying to preserve myself for future adventures.
I love your dialogue, your style, that cool ass hammock shelter and all the wildlife you were able to capture.
This is a really cool channel and your a cool dude! Thank you for putting this out there for us to enjoy. Thank you for your hard-work in capturing this beautiful place.
Take care

Awesome! Glad you're on the tumble train :-). Thanks for watching.

Thanks for sharing, im always happy to see a new Tumblehome video is out
THanks for checking it out! Glad you enjoyed it.
Amazing. Did the la cloche trail and loves every km of it! Beautiful place
Glad to see the ol' Toasty Arse 3000 is still holding strong. I have yet to receive the one I pre-ordered back in 2013. Maybe 2024 will be the year! 🎉😂 Happy New Year, my friend. Cheers to another great year!
Haha... limited run.
Fantastic journey, thanks for sharing as another canoe season comes to a close.
Glad you enjoyed it
OMG…..I will have to comment twice as I am so excited to watch this but will wait till tonight so I will have No interruptions! Thanks Jason 🥳🇨🇦❤️
Hope you enjoy it!
I had to make my second comment…..your personality and talent are what makes for great content….I guess I am just selfish for wanting to see more from your channel!
Thanks for letting us come along with you in our beautiful North.! We are so blessed. I think my favourite part was you wielding your knife LOL Cheers 🇨🇦
Thanks for the kind words! Of course, I think I'm a dork, so its nice to hear that you find me tolerable :-)@@Crap873

Mr Tumblehome has created another hour of magic for us - thanks for the gift that will keep giving and giving in re-watches over the years ahead - really... thanks man.
NP at all. Happy that you enjoy the little films!
I'm glad to see you back been looking forward to a new video.
thank you!
Whatttttt awesome sauce!
Class, pure class, thank you.
Thank you ! I’ve been waiting patiently for this …..
workin on another one! thanks for watching
There's nothing like Northern Ontario in autumn. I was at Booth that time of year in 2022, and that 550m portage was absolutely stunning (was also the only car in the parking lot). Thanks for sharing Jason, and for inspiring trips of my own.
Booth is a pretty lake for sure... some good fishing around there too. Glad to hear the vids are inspiring... thats the goal really.
Your video of canoe strokes is excellent. Nice videography as well.
Thank you very much!
Beautiful as always. Your content is our favourite canoeing adventures to watch. Best line: "Don't be such a cairn"
thanks! It was a cheesy line but I had to say it.
Your unique style is always impressive, well done on another great film.
Thank you so much 😀
Oh man, I needed this. Thanks.
np thanks for watching!
Welcome back Jason , another great one as usual , thank you .......
thanks!
Like always. Fantastic pictures and sounds of nature. Thanks for sharing.
THanks man. Thanks for being a long time fan!
Thank you, Jason, for sharing your solo paddle with us. I always look forward to your videos.
No problem... happy that folks are still watching :)
Stunning and inspirational video, as usual.
Thanks!
Your 'choffee' is what I call a 'mocha grande', just a hot chocolate packet in your mug and pour in the coffee. "Frustation, with the elevation, I need a libation". You're almost as good a poet as you are a photographer. Fall is my favorite time of year and you captured it perfectly, beautifully. I busted out laughing at 'You're such a cairn". Good to see the Toasty Arme 3000 is still on duty. Thanks for sharing. it's mystical the way you present your trips.
Thanks man. Thanks for all the nice words. The camera is the only companion for me out there so I'm always talking nonsense... you should see all the crap I cut out!
Awesome video Jason!! Thank you for sharing. Can’t wait to see your next adventure!
Thanks!
Wonderful therapy! Thanks Jason.
:-). Love to hear that!
Thanks for bringing the beauty of Killarney into our homes!
:-) ... It's hard to take a bad picture in that place!
Beautifully curated as always. Love your work. Thanks for sharing…
No problem, thanks for watching!
A lot of awesome footage. Thanks for another great video. I really like that sunrise that was incredible. And that looked like a very tough canoe ride across that lake too.😮
yeah its hard to get a bad shot in Killarney! The wind was pretty dicey there for a bit... should have hugged the shore tighter and took more time / maybe waited ? Lesson learned. ☺
Very Nice. Great story telling. Inspiring me to go do a solo trip.
Go for it!
So I like all your videos, but I believe this is my favorite! Fantastic adventure! The world needs more Tumblehome Videos!!
Thanks buddy! Thanks for watching and I'm still catching up on your vids too!
Great Stuff! Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Amazing once again…
Stunning scenery, awesome time lapses.. keep it up pal 👌🏼
I will do my best to keep on keeping on 😁 Thanks for watching.
It's always a joy watching your films, Jason. Looking forward to the next one.
Thanks for sticking around :-)... working on the next one right now.
Jason, I was impressed with your trip back across the lake in high winds. I also have a Keewaydin 15 but I have the pack boat version. If you can borrow one and try it in windy conditions I’d recommend that. It is far more stable and your profile in the wind is much lower . I hated giving up my canoe paddle for a kayak paddle but it does seem more efficient on open waters even in light winds. You videos are astounding artwork and I am thrilled each time one comes out. Keep paddling and sharing it with us!
THanks so much! I have the seat that lowers, the removable seat back and the foot bar.. just need to get a longer double blade. I would like to do a bit more double blade stuff but I'm just so enamoured with the classic single :-)
Once more, another awesome tumble escapade..👍
Thanks!
A beautiful trip, Thanks,
Glad you enjoyed it
What a great video.
Thanks. thank you for watching!
What a great video. That was excellent. Late season trips always feel different. The lack of people and solitude are definitely welcome.
Absolutely!!... I did a short trip in Aug with my son and couldn't get over how busy it was (APP)
Pleasant surprise finding a new Tumblehome vid up! Really enjoyed this one, thanks for sharing Jason.
Thank you!
Excellent video. Very enjoyable 😊
When you go to sleep, spread your puffy jacket out in your underquilt for extra insulation if needed.
Ah good idea! I sometimes wrap my feet/ end of sleeping bag in the jacket but it gets compressed by the weight... wouldn't happen in the quilt though 👍
That hike up to silver peak is a doozie! Great video as always, love the editing and pace.
Yeah its a full day to get up there. It kicked my ass so much that I made a pact / resolution to get back in shape! I started Jan 1, weighed 170. 9 mos later I'm down to 145. I can't remember the last time I was this slim. Cardio / strength classes 3x a week and cutting out most carbs /added sugar has been the trick for me. I just need to maintain it now 😳 It's not bad actually. I did a big loop in algonquin a couple weeks back with lots of portages and I felt much lighter and stronger, not nearly as winded. Going to have to keep it up if I want to keep trippin!
Great job, Jason. Glad you made it through the windstorm. Be careful out there!
thanks! yeah need to heed the little voice in my head :-)
I did this same trip in 1986. Thanks for the memories. Silver Peak is spectacular!
NP thanks for watching!
Awesome video. Who doesn’t hate it when they have the wrong lens in hand? 😂
Awesome Jason! Thanks again for sharing another great piece!
Thanks for watching bud. Glad to see you still in the chat and I love watching your restorations!
@@JasonIrwinTumblehome It has been a crazy summer for our family. I haven’t had any time to canoe so I was thankful to see your video. I still hope to get out but can’t be sure of that. Awesome videos man. Unbelievable talent! Very enjoyable!
Thanks. Glad you are enjoying the vids still! Hope you manage to get out. I'm supposed to do a trip soon but the weather looks dreadful for the next week... we'll see.@@mainetripper
I did this trip with my kids in July - we camped on site 186 - hiked Silver Peak when it was hot and sunny and covered with blueberries. David Lake was insanely wavy coming in from Bell but behaved the rest of the trip ! Great video ! I enjoyed seeing this area in the beautiful autumn.
Awesome! Thats a pretty tough hike, great to hear that the kids are doing it!
As always, top notch video. Hoping to get back to Killarney this October...hoping I get the same weather forecast you got 😂. Don't make us wait so long between videos...Keep up the great trip videos!
thanks!... working on one now!
Very nice video Jason. I'm only part way though it so far but I enjoy the quality and content of your videos. Looking forward to relaxing with the rest of it this evening. Thanks for posting.
I appreciate that! THanks.
Such a beautiful presentation my friend, this looks and sounds absolutely spectacular!
Thanks buddy, I just subbed your channel, beautiful vid on your recent solo hike in Sweden!
@@JasonIrwinTumblehome thx a ton
Great trip, Killarney is amazing in the autumn, looking forward to going back in a few weeks. We spent a night at the same site on David Lake on a two week loop through the park back in July, it was one of our favorites for sure, its neat to see it all frosted over here, very pretty.
Thank you! Always a blast to see vids about trips you've been on.
Well done sir
Thanks!
Great to see a new video up. Amazing scenery and the views from the top. The wind on your trip back looked intense and stressful. Then the owl..I like that you tell or describe to the viewer what animal is making the noise or call. Thanks for sharing.
thanks! I've had that kind of owl experience before / close to the hammock and hooting at night. It's amazing. Its a very throaty kind of call.. kind of freaky at close range.
Gran trabajo en tus videos Enhorabuena my friend Saludos
🍻
I've been watching re runs hoping for a new video. Since it is not quite October I guess it's a new/old video. As always I love your photography/videography. I miss loons Great to hear them. Thanks for all the hard work.
NP thanks a lot for watching and commenting!
Just needed some quiet, lovely canoeing. Decided the fire in the wood stove need more wood so out the door........ Halloween moose maybe 20 feet away. I think we were both annoyed. She finally walked off and I got the firewood. Now back the floating in a canoe.
Coffee and hot chocolate is a mocha. 😉 used to be a favorite test for me. Then I had to quit coffee to stop the migraines. It was worth it.
I like hot choffee better :-) ... a Mocha sounds expensive
I make cowboy coffee with dark chocolate melted in, it started in the bush but followed me home. That's what I'm drinking now! What a perfect time of year. One of my favorite trips was during an oddly warm November, we broke through the first ice of the season and took advantage of melting temps to squeeze a few more days out of canoe season.
oh dark chocolate would be even better! Thanks for watching.
Spectacular fall views buddy. That wind though. Killarney is a special destination. Silver peaks is not an easy hike, we've done it 3 times to date. Bad knees (husband) keeps us from doing it again. We have amazing memories. Thanks ✌
THanks!
Great video as always, did my first canoe trip on May long this year thanks to your channel as well as Lost Lakes and we actually did the David-Bell loop along with the hike to Silver Peak as well. Forecast called for rain Saturday to let off at 1pm se we did the hike anyways, turned out the rain did not stop the cloud just hung around Silver peak and spun back to our camp till about 9pm... by the time we hiked up to the peak we were actually in the cloud getting pelted by hail/snow. Wet gear till about Sunday evening... Can't wait to go back out next year and do it again lol
Haha... but seriously, that sucks. It's hit and miss right? part of the game. I had a good stretch there for a couple of years but this year I've had lots of damp days on all three trips I've done . All of the weeks that I chose not to go have been perfect weather. The hike up The Crack is well worth it... arguably a more picturesque trip. thanks for watching
All part of the adventure is the mindset we had, but spending 3 hours to hike up and not get the fantastic virew you had did not feel like it was worth it haha.
Gonna try my luck with a little solo 3 days in Temagami before the white stuff comes down. Everytime you post a new video I get the itch again lol, keep up the good work.
Thank you for documenting your trips, Jason. So well filmed, narrated, and produced. Can I ask what those square things are on the shoreline at 33:45 - camp solar?
thank you, those are some solar panels connected to a cottage (lodge?) on that island
Great video and i have been thinking of getting that Tigris hammock enclosure too and it seemed great. You mentioned about needing a new under quilt and not sure if you know about Little Shop of Hammocks who is a Canadian cottage vendor but I bought a new complete setup this year from them good to -5 and couldn’t be happier with the quality. I have got a lot of use out of it this year and still 8 days coming up in Algonquin in a couple of weeks. Thanks for the video .
Thanks! Yes I've heard of them... looks like great gear. Have fun in Algonquin!
Hi, long time no see - great video. I was in Killarney last week and ALL the front country and back country spots were booked. We booked early spring. You had the place to yourself 😮 I think I'll plan an October trip. Do you remember your site # on David Lake?
yeah its tough to get anything in September for Killarney... my site was the old #99 but they've updated and now its #188
Nicely composed video, love the still photography. FYI if you care : A glacial erratic is glacially deposited rock differing from the type of rock native to the area in which it rests; the rocks on you hike, at your campsite and the surrounding area were all gneiss.
Ah ok cool. I will dig deeper into that... I assumed these were erratics. Thanks for the correction!
Great Video this is the first Video I got notified on and I'm a Subscriber i have to get to work and watch the ones I missed thanks Jason im having trouble finding the Toasty Arse 3000 though 😂 please help LOL
Thanks! The TA3000 is hard to find... very rare. :-)
Mornin Good to see you back - is that oct 22? i was thinkin when u made that crossing - bet he wished he had the Carolyn Jane - stable and u cud have knelt in it to get ur centre of gravity lower - awefully hi in that new canoe - look forward to more Sir take care
Yeah the CJ would have been a little more stable but I actually do feel fairly stable in that Keewaydin. It's so narrow that you can brace your legs firmly on either side and it gives you great control. It moves around more and is more tippy but I feel fairly confident in it because of that solid connection. Oct 22 sounds about right.
not this year tho lol thanks take care@@JasonIrwinTumblehome
Love the work to do with the camera. Can you tell me what paddle length you use with that boat?
