A friend in New Zealand has reinvented the rotary valve recently. A rotary valve with a second guillotine that slides across the intake in the opposite direction. Its controlled by a servo motor and serves two functions. It provides both variable intake timing for a very wide power curve AND it also acts as the throttle. It works very well and has proven reliable, tested in the dirt and mud on a motocross bike.
We always felt that we got better fuel mileage outta the rotary valve engines compared to the piston port engines in competition. Sure do miss the days of my 1987 Formula Plus doing ski stands.

There was a lot of hidden power that tuners could find!

(Phil cuts his finger off with the rotary valve ! ) Great engines, smooth power. I had an old 70's Kawasaki 175 that had a fiberglass rotary valve.
Phil here: I thought my finger would get caught in the crank or piston skirt. Thankfully no stitches for me today!
