    With the right tools, the axle bushings can be replaced with the axle in place:
    Golf 4 / mk4 shown in this link (I'm still saving up for the tool)

    It amazes me how, as long as I know what to search for, you’ve probably made a video doing it.

    Hi Thomas. I could hear your frustration with this job and it looked like every bolt was really on there, especially those pressure regulator bolts. I would have been cursing through that job. Good one Thomas!

    Wow that was a difficult one . That's definitely one I would want to do on a hoist. Well done Thomas

      Forgot to add the link to the "quick way to change the axle bushings"... check the description how it is done on a mk4 Golf. A similar tool is used to do it on the mk3 that I had on the hoist. Even with the correct tool, I would have still had to fight with that pressure regulator.

    My car pulls to the right, and have had it aligned, and was told it is within VW specs, but the rear axle must be bent a bit and would need to be straightened on a frame machine, but was told from the car club memeber that: Shims can be installed at rear stub axle/beam mounting to correct alignment. They can correct for toe and camber.
    I'm not sure where to find these shims at?

    Great video Thomas, im going to do this in my mk2 gti next week, i have a question, do i have to remove the pressure regulator valve?? Or you just took it out cause it needs a new one?? Cause by the looks i dont have to take it out, Thanks in advance!

      @EXOVCDS  Před 9 lety

      I'm drawing a blank on how the mk2 setup looks... I'll get back to you tonight after work.

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  Před 9 lety

      MrElpajita The pressure regulator in this video was leaking... that's why I replaced it, but, it has to be moved to gain access to the Axle Mounting bolt. On your mk2, the regulator setup is similar. You will probably also have to move it so that you can get at the mounting bolt.

    i am about to the same project on a vw 2000 jetta. do you think the procedures for removal will be similar?

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  Před 10 lety

      Yes, a bit easier since there is no pressure regulator... don't forget to disconnect the ABS speed sensor wiring.

      Do you need to remove the rear axle? A google / image search for mk2 jacking points should result in some pictures of where to jack. The placement of jack stands should also come up in a search. You can raise the rear by jacking the middle of the rear axle, then place jack stands under the body close to where the ae bolts into place. You can lift the front under the center of the subframe and then place jack stands under the round supports just behind the front wheels. Hope that makes sense.

    Maybe it’s too late to ask, but do I need to do all these steps and full remove the axle beam just to replace the mount bushings?

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  Před 2 lety +1

      No. The service manual shows it being done in the vehicle. You can leave the axle hanging by the rear shocks and lowering the front portion to get at the bushings.

    Those regulators are a pain! Are you in a snow state? I've gotten my fair share here in Fl, and I've had some where the lines seize at the regulator, and you have no choice but to cut them off some times, and then make new ones/flare/etc. I use anti-seize on the regulator mounting bolts. Actually coat the bores where the holes pass through. So the bolts don't seize in the regulator in the future.

      @EXOVCDS  Před 10 lety

      I do the same with the new bolts... I'm on the west coast where the winters are mild. Have you got the hydraulic press to do the bushings with the axle in place? I've mentioned it to my boss for years, but I don't think he'll ever buy the set.

    • @LynxStarAuto
      @LynxStarAuto Před 10 lety

      I have a tool yes, but it is not hydraulic. It is your standard screw type. it is made by Baum, and comes with many different adapters for many BMW/VW/MBZ which is what I mostly service. It works on the vehicle as well in most instances, so long as you drop the axle low enough. It runs in the mid 500 range. However, some of the sleeves will be so stuck inside, that you still have to pull out the torch and grinder in some instances, but this is rare. Has to be a real rust bucket for the most part.

    Had to make a tool to install them,but it was all worth it..

      Our removal & installation procedure isn't pretty... that's why I didn't record it. I have the installation tool for the mk4's, just need something to make the removal on both platforms easier (while the axle is in place).
