    Very nice video Thomas. I liked the engine support bar that you were using. It looked like it was homemade and a very simple design, but effective. I especially liked the crank which hooked around the tubing instead of going through a slot that most have out there. And yes, that drive axle was a little stubborn and good thing you had a puller and impact. Funny how you mentioned about the acronyms in a post below. I was getting some of them and then I thought, "wait a minute now, Thomas is making this up now." LOL...

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  Před 9 lety

      stuzman52 I don't usually swear... but I thought that for this bit, it would be a funny addition to the video. That support bridge has been at the shop since I started. Yes, home made after a VW design, by one of the earlier techs. I bought one of those split bridges (bigger and can hold more), but I always grab the smaller one first.

    Going to be starting a transaxle removal later today on my Jetta GL. I think between my Chilton and this video, it'll be a relative breeze. That Cabrio has a whole lot more plumbing up front than I'm used to seeing though!

    OMG Thomy. I haven't laughed so hard in a while, but you made my night watching you sweating over that outer cv joint. Haven't you thought about using some pb blaster or something else that releases rust?

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  Před 9 lety

      How many times did you pause the video to look up the acronyms? LOL!
      I use PB blaster when I can soak it over night... no way that it would have made its way through the hub and gotten at all the splines while I had it on the hoist, ok, maybe it would have.... this was more fun though!

    • @HristovRumen
      @HristovRumen Před 9 lety

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  Před 6 lety

      A long extension (or several short ones) will hep get at the inner bolts. You'll need a second person to step on the brakes for you, so that you can loosen he outer axle nut with a big-a$% breaker bar. Let me know if you run into any issues. Work safe, lift & support the vehicle correctly ***on flat ground***!!!

    • @TheDrSuperGenius
      @TheDrSuperGenius Před 6 lety

      @@EXOVCDS thanks for the reply man. I was referring to the axel spline being stuck. I was not looking forward to beating on the end to remove it. I disconnected the ball joint and tied the inner end of the axle up and away from the trans and then lowered it down at a good angle so I could get the trans and transaxle out it worked out very well I was just concerned after seeing how hard it was to get the axel splines loose. They were rusted. Thanks for the video. You appear to be a very talented and experienced mechanic.

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  Před 6 lety

      My coworker leaves the axle in place... removes the ball joint bolts and then swings the strut out. Ties the strut away with a bungee cord... leaving the axle hanging from the outer cv joint. I like to remove it so that it's fully out of the way (driver side). The hub puller / pusher is a great investment and not too expensive:
      www.amazon.com/ABN-Axle-Front-Wheel-Puller/dp/B01LYSTFGD/
      Some generic ones will have to be modified slightly to fit the bolt pattern of the hub.

    Thanks for the videos it's been a long time since I replaced one did it had the original self adjusting clutch cable I hated those cables they were a pain to reset and most of them would not work properly and it would be hard on clutches I would mostly put a manual adjust cable an you what did you do with those pesky cables was the reverse gear ok I remember replacing lots.

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  Před 9 lety

      V10PDTDI It's true that those self adjusting cable go bad... I still prefer them over the manual ones. I have no issues collapsing them for removal or for self-readjustment. Yes, this was a quiet transmission... for how much longer, I don't know. :)

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  Před 9 lety

      I have a 3 year old video that shows me disconnecting a cable, collapsing it and then someone reattaching it while I hold it in the collapsed position.
      czcams.com/video/SPI5qkxol08/video.html
      I will make a better video the next chance I get!
      I simply slide the mechanism along the cable until it collapses. After it is reattached, I release the mechanism and pump the clutch pedal several times.
      That has always worked for me.
      To readjust without disconnecting, simply pull down on the clutch lever at the transmission and then let go... pump the pedal several times after.

      The 1080HD one at eyeofmine.com is on clearance for $130. Do you know if they are coming out with a new model or discontinuing it, thus the clearance? Have you looked at other competing glasses? How about Google glass?

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  Před 9 lety

      wvoheat Not sure, could be that they are upgrading or they are just clearing inventory. I was thinking about Pivothead, but they don't allow for microSD (IIRC) and I can't charge while recording (like the ones I have). Google glass is too expensive and is more of an interactive device... navigation, social media etc. My current setup is perfect for me, but when the glasses no longer work, I will be looking for something different (if the 1080p I'm using are no longer available).

    I'm going to do this myself in two weeks since we are totally redoing our front suspension. I figure while everything is out it's not a bad time to do the clutch too. About how long is this project in and out? (and I do have the skills and air tools). Also..I think we have a small leak from the rear main oil seal. Can I / should I get the flywheel machined and change the seal while in there? Our Cabrio just hit 200k miles! I don't even know if the clutch has ever been done since we bought it at 125k. My wife and I have been restoring it. I put in a brand new interior last year and we are repainting it this summer.

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  Před 7 lety

      +Jeff Chartier Mitchell lists 5.5hrs for rear main seal... can be done in less time. 5.5 is a comfortable time. Yes, change the seal & resurface the flywheel. If the flywheel is smooth, you can just clean it with sandpaper, but machining would be best.

    picked a automatic one of these up and every gear gear feels like drive but in limp home mode...even neutral
    and reverse attempt to move the car forward....dose anyone have any idea on what might be the cause?

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  Před 4 lety

      Start with checking for correct fluid level. If the car still wants to move forward when in neutral or reverse, then there is a hydraulic or solenoid issue inside the transmission.

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  Před 9 lety +2

      Sorry, I don't keep those kind of records... I don't work very fast, but the transmission is usually out in 40 to 50 min (sometimes faster). Then the cleaning and replacement of seals... and also waiting for parts, lunch or other interruptions (work on more than one car etc). Putting things back together somehow always takes longer than taking things apart. As long as I get it done within the time that the boss charges, all is ok.

    Do you have any tips on lining up the new clutch plate when attaching the flywheel? My Valeo clutch kit came with a plastic "alignment tool" but its not really working how I assumed it should (since there weren't any instructions in the kit). I still had to pretty much eyeball it. Wondering if there is a better way or if there is an actual tool I need. Thanks.

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  Před 7 lety

      2.0L or VR6?
      Round / cone plastic disc sits inside the flywheel and you place the disc on the tip of the tool... then you install the flywheel. I'll make a video. If it's a VR6, I put a 15mm (I think) socket in the crank and place the disco no it, then the flywheel. Remove the socket after the flywheel is tight.

    • @candsfly
      @candsfly Před 7 lety

      this is for the 020 tranny, not the VR6. I think I got it lined up as centered as I could get it. Now trying to attach tranny to block and need to make sure the spline goes into the clutch disk. Does the tranny need to be in neutral to do this? if so, how do I make sure it is in neutral?? just need the spline to be able to find the grooves so it will go in. Any tips?

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  Před 7 lety

      candsfly Put it in gear... any gear. If it doesn't go in the last bit, rotate one of the driveshaft flanges. That will cause the input shaft to move... which can help the splines to line up. Usually they go in with no issue.

    • @candsfly
      @candsfly Před 7 lety

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  Před 8 lety +2

      +Joe Breeding I don't write the bills where I work. It varies from shop to shop... labor should be similar, but hourly shop rate & parts prices will be different. If everything is working correctly and you are ok with what you paid, then don't wonder about how much you could have saved somewhere else... it will only cause stress. Stick with a shop that that you like and none of those worries will surface.

    Hi Thomas. I have a question regarding a 02K transmission on a vw jetta 2002. The 1st and 2nd gear not always goes in directly. It feels like it has 2 slots in whitch the shiftstick has to go in.but the 2 slots are not aligned. I try the first time, it goes in like I sayd before , but at the second attempt it goes in just fine. What could be the problem? Great vid! Thumbs Up!!!!

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  Před 9 lety

      If you have no issues with the other gears, then I would guess a problem with either the shifter fork or the syncro / hub assembly.

    • @szalasizsolt71
      @szalasizsolt71 Před 9 lety

      ***** No, I do not have problems with the other gears. Whould an oil change make things better? Or I should go to my mechanic? I'm not sure what a sichro or hub assembly is.... is it a complicated problem? Or an easy fix?

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  Před 9 lety

      Szalasi Zsolt I doubt that an oil change will help... but it is the cheapest place to start. Those parts are internal, so if one of those is the problem, transmission disassembly is required.

    I really want to kick the engineer of the 99 Cabrio right in the crotch. That transmission hardly fits back in there (hardly fit out too)! Ive almost given up on getting it back in; Im on the verge of putting the transmission in the back seat and towing it to the shop.

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  Před 2 lety

      If you are working with the car on the ground.... it's not the engineer's fault. Once everything is disconnected and the engine / transmission are lowered correctly, it's just a matter of tilting the transmission down & out while rotating the differential end up.
