DSG Transmission - Explained

  • What is a DSG transmission? How does a direct shift gearbox work? A DSG transmission is a dual clutch transmission used by Volkswagen. A DSG uses two wet, multi-plate clutches to activate separate drive shafts which send torque via the even or odd gear sets. Because the gear sets are on separate shafts, this allows for preselecting the next gear, allowing for nearly instantaneous gearshifts without a total loss in torque. DSG tranmissions operate a lot like manual transmissions, but they are electronically controlled and thus the gear selection can be either automatic or manual, but does not require the use of a clutch pedal as this is all activated automatically.

Whenever people tried to explain how a manual trans works to me when I was younger, trying to learn stick, they honestly just confused me so much more than if they told me how to use the clutch and not explain how the transmission is actually working. However if I watched this video it would’ve made much more sense now.

    The DSG is an amazing transmission. It’s one of the main reasons I bought a MKV GTI - I was so impressed by the technology. I enjoy driving manuals, but I think the DSG is fun to drive and it benefits from improved performance, fuel economy, and convenience over a traditional manual. VW is also continually improving it; I drove a 2013 GTI and the DSG was even smoother and more refined than my ‘08.
    Thanks for showing us the inner workings of the DSG!

    • @ARentz07
      @ARentz07 Před 4 lety +2

      @@mbulelomankonkwana8038 First, the ECU cuts timing during the shift, but fuel delivery continues for a brief moment. So, some unburnt fuel makes it into the exhaust, which is hot. So the fuel gets ignited, making the sound. The reason for the timing being cut is to prevent the engine from revving while the shift is occurring.

      @@FDALl-ms5kg An engine is very simple. Have you seen a 2 stroke engine?. A 4 stroke engine can be made very simple too, if you look at 1920s engines they had very few components and complications. Modern engines are complex because they trade simplicity for efficiency. The higher efficiency you have, the harder it is to gain more efficiency, designs start to be cumbersone and many extra decisions have to be made to gain 0.X%.
      In engineering, when you want to calculate reliability you apply the formula R = e-λt. When you have multiple systems that need to work together, then you have Rs = R1xR2.
      In a DCT gearbox, the number of Ri(s) you have to multiply is very high. If there was no other physical solution to the problem, then it would be considered a complex but good or clever design, but because there are simpler alternatives that have less components, are more reliable, simpler to build and repair and have the same or more efficiency, the DCT can no longer be considered a complex but good solution, it's just a complex solution.

    VW cars are notoriously famous for their DSG (dry clutch variant) & mechatronic problems in Asian countries, especially if the vehicle was heavily used in hot weather, traffic congestions & start-stop traffic (yes, our traffic jams are horrible). It has been circulating around that the dual clutch transmission is very jerky in start stop traffic & indecisive in choosing the right gear in those circumstances. as a result, DSG tend to kaput after 6 months of usage & unfortunately it is time consuming (waiting for the parts) & cost a bomb to repair. & the problems persists not long after that. Ford's powershift (also dual clutch) is sharing the same fate too...

      Keep in mind the transmission is expecting to go up or down one gear at a time, so the alternate shaft will get the torque smoothly. But if you give a contradictory input, it now has to jump 2 gears up or down, the first one just to cancel the current pre-select. The alternate shaft is bypassed and everything flows thru the current selected shaft, so the change is going to be much more abrupt and harder on the clutches.

    So basically its a manual transmission using an automatic transmissions clutch packs and pistons. With the combination it might last longer then both wear wise because you don't have to worry about all the clutch packs a normal automatic has or the clutch going out like a manual. Since it's all computer controlled, as long as the electronics hold up, it should have over 100,000 miles of life or 200,000+ maybe.

      My guess would be the engine control unit changing the engine rpm to match the wheel speed for the new gear. I believe that often they use the ignition timing to cause the engine speed change (when shifting up gears) and that will give you an 'odd' exhaust note during the change.

    Quick question.
    When in "D", and I am stopped at the traffic light. I assume the wet clutch is constantly in friction, right ? So it is better to select "N" for longer stops than say 10 seconds ?
    Or do these clutches fully disconnect when I am stopped but still in "D" ?
    Or does that depend on the model of car we are driving ?

    • @SilverZ233
      @SilverZ233 Před 8 lety

      I would assume so, only because it's recommended not to inch forward in a DCT doing so causes unnecessary clutch wear, generally that's caused by engaging or disengaging too slowly or too often which makes me think that the clutch is not engaged at a stop. Also i think the type of clutch used in a DCT does not allow for slip while in gear so if it didn't shift into neutral at a stop it would stall.

    • @Silberschleier
      @Silberschleier Před 8 lety

      afaik it depends on the brake pressure you apply.
      If you press the pedal firmly the DCT should go into neutral.

My first car with the DSG was sold at 89,000 miles. Not a single problem with the car either, in fact it was part exchanged and the dealership didn't bat an eyelid because they had all the servicing history on their system and knew the car. The guy that did my MOT for the past 3 years after the first 3 that the car was new, he asked me why I didn't tell him that I was selling because he knew that the car was perfect and he was interested in buying it. My previous car never failed an MOT, not even advisories. All servicing done at VW dealerships at the correct time and I followed the schedule correctly. If people treat the car like shit, take it to back of the house mechanics, use non-genuine replacement parts, out of spec oils, etc then the car will break. These are not the shitty 80s car anymore, these are machines built to tight tolerances so people who treat it with an 80s mindset will break them.

The other shaft handles the rest of the gears. And one clutch is connected to one shaft, which means that the purpose of this DGS is just wrong. What am I missing? :)

    • @winemeer7383
      @winemeer7383 Před 7 lety +2

      Spawn223311 Transverse 6 speeds (wet clutch) are very good. Some early versions had problems with their mechatronic units, though they have been adressed and fixed. They are very strong boxes and this have been proved from the tuning scene. Stock clutches can handle huge amounts of torque if the box has been remaped. Gears are also pretty good for a 350nm rated gearbox. They can handle almost 750-800nm before giving up. Keep in mind though that they need to be serviced every 40k miles (fluids and filter) and this is really important for gearbox life.
      Later 7 speeds (dry clutch) are not so reliable.( Im not talking about ttrs/rs3 dq500 units, those are 7spd wet clutch and really good) They have some issues with their clutch packs and their mechatronic units (completely different from 6spd) seem to fail often. I really hope that vw has adressed the issues.
