    Thank you for being so long winded. Your explanation and demonstration and tips aided immensely in troubleshooting my oil light with alarm coming on at 2000 rpm's. In my case the high pressure switch would never ground out. It had a constant 12 volts at any RPM. Thank you. I have a 1985 VW Jetta 1.8L engine.

    For anyone else, my high pressure sensor was working dandy for 200K on my 98 ahu tdi. then the buzzer came on and the oil light, pulled over and there was barely any oil on the dipstick. threw some 1540 in it and luckily got it home, i thought it was leaking at the oil filter housing but turns out it was leaking inside the high pressure oil switch. Luckily my high pressure switch still worked or else i would’ve blown my engine. Happy i caught it in time.

The light stays this way after pulling the wires to both the low and high pressure senders. Based on your video its time to check both wires and the instrument cluster. Can you reccomend a decent aftermarket oil pressure gauge for Cabrio 2.0 engines? Maybe even a video on how-to for mounting the interior gauge.

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  Před 4 lety

      Nowadays there are a lot of aftermarket oil pressure gauges available to choose from. Depending on where you want to mount it and how big you need it to be, it all depends on you. You can even find gauges that can handle multiple outputs. By a push of a button you can view oil pressure, coolant temperature, rpm... but setups like that can get pricey. A single purpose gauge like this might suit your needs (check with them to make sure that the wiring is included).

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  Před 8 lety

      If this happens even when the engine is cold (thick oil)... then I don't think that it is a loss of pressure problem. Yes, attaching a pressure gauge would help verify what the pressure actually is.

    Did all these tests and oil filter housing wire doesn’t ground after the car is warmed up, it’s a 1994 golf with only 87k miles could be a bad cluster? As some times my cluster does not illuminate with the headlights on

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  Před 4 lety

      Maybe... I don't know how exactly you tested / checked things. Verify what actual oil pressure is... with a mechanical gauge. Once you know that pressure is OK, you can take your time finding the "electrical" issue.

      When you attach a test light to battery positive and attach the other end to the oil pressure switch by the oil filter... what happens?

  • @George-lo6pw
    @George-lo6pw Před 5 lety

    What if the light comes on only at idle (no buzzer) but as soon as you drive or rev past 1000 rpm it goes away. What do you make of that? New sensors all around and new oil pan so no sludge or anything. My guess was maybe oil pump tube from block to pump?

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  Před 5 lety

      You need to check actual oil pressure at the head and compare with the pressure rating that is on the pressure switch. If this happens only after the engine is fully warm (thinner oil) and the pressure sensor is the correct one, try using a thicker oil. What oil are you using now?

    • @George-lo6pw

      0.3 bar low pressure switch? You might have one with a slightly higher rating... the other switch is the high pressure switch, it's rated for 1.4 bar, but works opposite of the low pressure one. Low pressure switch is normally closed and opens with pressure. High pressure switch is normally open and closes with pressure.

    Hi, good video, good explanation. Just wondering if you could help me. I have the same problem on a 2000 new beetle 2.0 l engine...oil light and beep coming out after reving up the engine,good oil level at the deepstick. I've changed the oil pressure sensor, just below the steering oil tank. I'm thinking to do as well as you did, to wire the ground to that sensor switch..please can you explain me how yo do it..some DIY..pictures?! thank you..all the best!

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  Před 8 lety

      +WAN Hi... the beetle is slightly different. It uses a single sensor at the oil filter housing / flange. Grounding the wire (like in the video) will not quite work the same, as there is slightly different logic that the instrument cluster uses. Meaning that if you were to ground the wire, the buzzer will still come on, because the cluster is looking for a specific no-ground, ground signal. Remove the pressure switch and attach a mechanical pressure gauge... check actual oil pressure. If borderline, you can try using thicker oil as a band-aid / temporary fix. Checking for oil strainer restriction, worn bearings... etc, would be the next step.

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  Před 7 lety +2

      Yes it can... the A4 / mk4 oil pressure switches don't seem to leak as often as the older generation switches. Make sure that the oil cooler is tight, could be an oil cooler seal leak instead. Remove the oil filter and tighten the 27mm nut that is visible.

      The light should come on / stay on before the rpm reach 2000 rpm (switch at the filter). The light should go out as soon as the engine is running... switch at head.
      I have a feeling that you have a faulty switch at the filter flange. Remove it and read the pressure rating (should be stamped at the base of the switch.
      If you remove the wire from the switch and attach it to a clean metal surface of the engine (by holding it or by using a jumper wire)... what does the oil light & buzzer do then?

      Does it happen when the engine is cold or only when hot?
      What is the actual pressure at 1900 to 2000 rpm when slowly increasing rpm to that level?
      What oil? Any engine noise?
      Is the wiring OK? Have you verified with a scan tool checking the "Instrument cluster module" live data of the oil pressure signal (OK/Not OK) when manipulating the oil pressure sensor wire to ground & off?

I know the switch hasn't been messed with for at least 4 years (as long as we've had the car) and the oil light just started flashing yesterday. I know they can break but it's weird to me that it was operating, just exactly backwards of what it's supposed to. Anyway I replaced it and that resolved the issue.

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  Před 4 lety

      Thanks for the extra info... it could be that when it failed, things internally for some reason function backwards. I've never had one apart, but as far as I know there's a spring loaded diaphragm and a small ball bearing. If the ball isn't sitting / making metal to metal contact (due to the diaphragm) when the engine is off, then the light can't come on. With oil pressure pushing against the ball (once the engine is running) the ball could make contact with something if the diaphragm is bad... turning the light on. In any case, good to hear that a new switch solved things!

    So my issue is almost the exact opposite with my 97' Jetta GL 2.0L.
    When the engine is cold and the oil is thick there is absolutely no buzzing and oil pressure warning light. I then drive 55+ mph (88 km/h) for a while until the engine is warmed up.. once I reach this point, and slow down my speed to around 2300 rpm or lower, the flashing and the buzzing begins.
    Engine warm and driving at 2300+ rpm = no buzzing/flasing.
    Engine warm and driving at idle through 2300 rpm = buzzing/flashing.
    I ordered a high pressure switch - as you said in the video, this should help with the buzzing/flashing.

      If pressure is good above 2000 - 2300, then the buzzer & light will stay off.... your pressure is probably just borderline at 2000 to 2300. If the same thing happens with the new switch, try thicker oil at your next oil change. 15w40 or 20w50.

    Hello, I had a problem with my 95 mk3 1.6l aek. I was driving and did not really look at the tach, but it could be that I was not even over 2k rpm, since i was doing 50kmh in 4th or 5th gear. So the light started flashing and buzzer went off, but it shut off after few seconds, after 5-6 flashes maybe without cycling the key. I stopped on the side of the road started the car again, and the problem hasn't manifested again. I do need an oil change like right now. could it be an oil change warning? I have the car for only a month, and I have never owned a VW. Maybe someone could shed some light on this? And I checked the wiring, looked good.

      Not an oil change warning.
      Change the oil and check it again. Oil light & buzzer = no signal from the "high" (2000 rpm+) pressure switch. The low pressure switch is mainly for idle pressure.

      2.0L?
      Only at idle? What oil are you using? 5w30, 5w40, 10w30? If it only comes on at "warm idle" and a mechanical pressure gauge confirms that the oil pressure is borderline (at warm idle), switching to a thicker oil like 15-40 or 20-50 can help keep the light off. Aside from that... if it is a higher mileage vehicle, then there's internal engine wear which is causing the low oil pressure. A worn oil pump or weak oil pressure relief spring can also cause low oil pressure. If the slightest increase in RPM causes the light to go out... you can also install a lower pressure rated "low pressure" oil pressure switch at the cylinder head (it will not trigger the light as early.

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  Před 4 lety +1

      We don't have golf 3 1.4 in Canada... so I don't know how many switches your golf has. In general (for mk3 vw's of that year) one blue and one white pressure sensor. Have a look at your engine and determine how many pressure sensors there are... then, remove one sensor at a time and check the "pressure rating" that is stamped on the bottom of the sensor(s). Buy the same sensor and install in the same place that you removed it. The part number is also stamped on the bottom of the oil pressure switch. Color of the switch is not always the best to rely on... check the part number & rating.

      Like I said... the correct pressure is stamped on the bottom of the oil pressure sensor. Use that pressure rating to compare with the new switch (new switch might be different color but have the same rating). Key ON engine OFF oil light should blink. Engine ON / running, oil light should be out. 2000rpm oil light should be out. If oil light is flashing at 2000rpm (and the oil buzzer is buzzing), you have an oil pressure problem or a pressure sensor / wiring problem.

      There are 2 oil pressure warnings / conditions.
      - low oil pressure light alone
      - low oil pressure light & buzzer / beeper
      The beeper & light are triggered at 2000 rpm when the "high pressure switch" (at the oil filter flange) is NOT
      grounding out the wire due to low oil pressure.
      Make sure that the correct oil pressure switch is installed (oil pressure rating is stamped on the base of the switch).
      Disconnect the wire from the switch and attach it directly to a clean metal part of the engine (grounding the wire). If the
      warning still comes on at 2000 rpm, then there is a fault with the wiring or the instrument cluster.
      In general... if the beeping & flashing light only happen AFTER the engine has fully warmed-up... then the problem is due to
      warn engine components that are causing low oil pressure. Switching to a THICKER oil can help keep the warning from coming
      on... until the actual mechanical issue is addressed.
