Most of the new shows like Kaguya-sama: Love Is War, Spy x Family, Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen and even some old ones like Naruto, Dragon Ball, One Piece, and Hunter x Hunter all have pretty good dubs. Basically any big Shonen Jump manga that gets an anime adaptation will have a good dub.
There is nothing better than finding out a series has a phenomenal dub like Cowboy bebop or when a series is completely reinvented like ghost stories. Although for me nothing will top the unhinged and unironic masterpiece that is the Golden Boy dub Doug Smith is the absolute goat for what he brought to what would’ve been an otherwise bland show.

I don't give a Fuck what the weebs say I love dub, and I will watch it in dub.
Although many people make fun of Naruto's dub, I really like it. Most of the performances just hit different, if you know what I mean. And oh boy, let's not forget some iconic voices like Madara or Pain, which are considered to be way better in dub, even by sub fans.
Oh yeah, the Naruto dub is great. I just think it's funny that he says believe it all the time. Rock lee's voice is my favorite, it just doesn't hit the same in Japanese.
Out of all the things people make fun of in Naruto, the dub has apparantly the least damage.
The trick is: why would we know? Sane people watch works in their original form. I don't see why I would sit myself through an entire re-watch of Naruto in dub when I can just enjoy the original Japanese work.

I'm also finding that a lot of my friends watch dubbed for the same reason you do - cause reading subtitles takes too much energy, and i can't blame them for that. i just want to share laughs and memes with them and if what it takes is for them to watch the anime dubbed, then so be it. also, thank you for your zelda soundtrack picks. i was more excited than i should've been at being able to recognize all the BGM. subbed!

I love the dubbed version of demon slayer. The voice actors really matched the characters energy in just by voice٫ and just the tone of their voice makes it better.

Another issue is that all of the good English voice actors are playing American cartoons. Another thing is that I’m used to subtitles because i watch foreign horror movies and other foreign films. Imagine watching a foreign film dubbed. It’s even worse than anime
nah man what you said @7:35 about not wanting to read subtitles after a long day and losing motivation to even watch anime is real asf. I recently watched cowboy bebop in dub and I was so impressed by how fast I sped through it because I could just...chill. A lot of times when I watch sub, I tend to miss a lot of what's going on sometimes because I end up tunnelvisioning on the screen or simply just become tired trying to focus on the text and completely miss bare subtitles/events to where I'll have to rewind then rewatch over and over just to make sure I got it all.
You can't lie though, there are some moments where dubbed anime is good
I distinctly remember trying to rewatch Steins;Gate just to remember that I originally watched it dubbed, after it sounded somewhat weird. Then I turned it back to dub and it was like the cringiest dialogue I've ever heard. But I also remember sitting down a week ago to watch The devil is a part timer season 2 just to notice that I need to wait and pray for it to get dubbed into german (my mother tongue), because of my amazing experience with season 1. It made use of german accents like bavarian or turkish german for comedic purposes which made it one of the funniest anime I've ever watched. I also kinda fucked up by watching ano hana in japanese, so the emotions didn't hit me as hard as they would habe dubbed. But now I watch like one anime a season so I guess it doesn't really matter. tl,dr: dub has its place but walks a fine line between enhancing and cringe. Great video btw, keep up the good work.

Personally I think the drop in voice quality is worth the sacrifice to watched dubs if you have a hard time reading like myself. I just get tired of hitting the 10sec back button. It takes me like 5+min extra to watch some anime just from pausing and rewinding because i can’t read the subs fast enough or I missed the action. Also dubs are way easier to watch with friends.

I found new enjoyment in dubs by watching the love is war dub. Ive never laughed at anything in Japanese but when it’s in English I feel more enjoyment…
Plus that series is a nightmare for slower readers. I had to switch to dubbed for season 2. The dub cast seems to have a lot of fun.

The only time I actively look for dubbed anime is if it's a dialogue filled episode, where I can take my eyes off, do something else and listen. But for action packed scenes, I prefer subbed. I just feel Japanese voice actors are more passionate in their action packed scenes. Also japanese bosses sound cooler speaking japanese than english

As someone who has adhd watching the dub helps with the experiance but it also depends on anime its self.
I think a lot of people who hate on dub Anime. Don’t ever take it to consideration that other people cannot watch sub anime. like, for example some people have reading disabilities so they need the dub if possible. It’s not always because some people are lazy. Sometimes you don’t have a choice.

I have wondered how much digital animation has changed things. Since virtually all anime is done on computers now, I've wondered how much editing for lip flaps has been less of a problem. This may not be the case but I have been curious 🤷♀.
I think the reason why I find dub so hard to watch is because anime dubs are more or less bottom of the barrel voice acting. You compare those voice actors to proper actors you'd hear in Disney, Pixar or Dreamworks. Hell, even The Rock can voice act fairly well.
Okay, that's unfair on the VAs. Since you can tell some of them have really good voices or acting, but are held back by a amateur sound mixing or poor directing/not having time or access to source material.
While Japanese VAs get a lot more opportunities from their roles and are quite frankly, the best of the best. Not the left overs who do it as a hobby but those who actually have to compete with hundreds of other VAs. Not to mention their recording studios on top of that Japanese VAs generally voice act as a group compared to English which most of the time are individually recorded.
Basically, I compare English anime dub to the best English dubs in animation, and Japanese anime dub to the best Japanese dubs... which is anime.
I think English dubs would be a lot better if the medium had some modicum of respect for itself in the west and actually put the time and resources into it. Also a competitive environment where they hire the best instead of a stagnant shortlist (even JP has this issue but their VAs are a bit better of playing a wide range of voices (except Hiroshi Kamiya(jokes))).

Gundam Wing’s Japanese voices are horrific. Their English dub is extremely good.
It really sucks how poorly voice actors are treated in the West. They are working really hard to get roles and when it comes to animated movies, they get passed over for Hollywood actors who will half-ass their performances and will still be paid more.
Does it matter if it's sub or dub there both in English at the end of the day.
Take Naruto for example, the audience will never know what "Dattebayo" is when watching them in the dub - that's a unique feature that the author wants to add. Furthermore, some characters become more distinctive when they are voiced by actors who speak local dialects in Japan, and I don't see any English version that does the same. So in my opinion, English dubbing is simply helping viewers understand the content quickly, nothing more, nothing less!

Latin Spanish anime dubs can be very similar to Disney/Dreamworks' (same VAs and directors). Its high quality and a well oiled machine, as we dont have many local cartoons.

But why does the problem only come out with English. In Italian most dubs I hear sound just better than the original Japanese voice actors. Every VA does god’s work… check the Italian version of Kira’s confession for example, that is the first take and done by Flavio aquilone when he only was 18.

Subs have the same issues as dubs.
Subs just aren't as badly effected because the Japanese script is technically still there in the form of the audio while dubs lose everything except for the visuals.
RAW > SUB > DUB
Also, with localisers being outed now... I honestly have to question the sanity of people who continue to stand by dubbed content. 🤦

Well, I'd consider them fans of something pretending to be anime while wearing it's skin like some deranged serial killer. But they certainly don't look like fans of the victim to me. 🤷
I watch Digimon subbed because honestly if I don't, I'll have to wait a year or more for the dub. But I watch dubbed anime precisely because of that energy usage. Most of the time I spend watching anime is during that short hour after I get home from work before bed, or on one of my days off. I read a lot anyway as an aspiring biblical scholar. This is my TV time, and I just don't want to play what I call "eyeball ping pong".
As for the "lack of emotion" argument, I have never understood this. I grew up on a lot of English animated media from Disney Princess movies to super hero cartoons like Ben 10 and Teen Titans Go to Pixar films. And honestly I can go from one of those to a dubbed anime and not hear any drop in acting quality. Speaking of Ben 10, did you know that after the time skip, Ben is voiced by Yuri Lowenthal who voiced Sasuke Uchiha in Naruto, Keigo Asano in Bleach, and other characters? Steve Blum is notable not only a Spike Spiegel and boat load of Digimon characters, but he also voiced Wolverine. Their acting performances are only ever criticized when the roles they're playing are anime characters. This shows me that there is some psychological bias towards the sub and not any objective quality in the acting itself. And I've watched plenty of comparison videos and am just like "These are both great performances in their respective languages! What's the big deal?"
And imo, if I could be permitted to bring g up the shows with the best English acting, it would be Bleach and Attack on Titan. Just listen to Erwan's "My Soldiers Rage" speak in the dub or Ichigo's "Getsuga Tenshou" in a comparison video with the JP version. Or Eren shouting "Reiner! YOU TRAITOR!!!!" Those are fire performances imo!

Popular dub animes get more funding so that they can have the better actors. Notice you don't see the better voice actors in harem or isekai trash. The good voice actors such as Steve Blum or Aleks Ye are usually used in Shonen animes.
Good video. I prefer subs for the same reasons as most people. But lately I can’t watch anything without also doing something else at the same time, so dubs come in clutch.
the acting in sub flows naturally with the show so can't help it. I love subs. but there are some anime with great dubs like fruits basket and rosario/vampire and sailor moon that i prefer over the sub. LOL I actually love to read so I don't mind reading the subtitles. I also am learning Japanese so it helps for me to watch Japanese animes and movies.
I've recently been watching Yu Yu Hakusho and honestly even if some of the lines are changed I still think it's excellent.

I can't read, well I can but not often I have a attention disorder so I cannot read and watch at the same time subs I either focus on the writing or the show and I usually read too slow or too fast so it doesn't match with the audio, I hope this changes in the future but I cannot for the life of me watch a subbed anime at all

Since I started watching anime through TV broadcasts, I originally experienced them in dub. in the early 2000s. I only got into subs a little later (in the 2010s), partly because they were the quickest way to watch ongoing anime once you've caught up. I've been watching a lot of dub recently, and it's really just a matter of comfortability. Sometimes I just don't want to keep reading subtitles, and I started watching anime primarily in dub. Unless, there was no existing dub yet. The result was that I still pretty much enjoyed. Listening to English VA actors interpretations of a character can be really refreshing. I think people who look down on dubs will actually be surprised at how dubs actually come onto their own. so yeah, there's nothing wrong with trying both.
One anime that I cannot watch unless it gets a dub is the Tatami Galaxy. I just can’t keep up with it. 😂 I kind of wish Wes Anderson and his recurring cast of actors could be convinced to do a dub of that, but there’s no chance that that will ever happen.
There is some real gatekeeping in the anime community. I keep hearing that I have to watch anime in Japanese or it's not the authentic experience. However the most authentic experience is the light novel or manga and I want to watch anime not read it. Dubbed anime is easier to watch then sub especially if you are a slow reader. You also spend more time watching the visuals instead of looking at the bottom of the screen. Not to mention English is my spoken language so I want to experience my media in English. I should not be shamed out of enjoying something just because I prefer to watch it a specific way.

I'm just so glad we have very good dubs in germany, seriously, the majority are really good or sometimes even better than sub imo. But yeah, not gonna lie, I tried out some english dubs and....wow....they do kinda suck.

stuff like that actually depends on your opinion I personally enjoy dubs more than subs because I'm kinda lazy to read, dubs has great voice acting too like the Naruto dub I know Naruto kept saying BELIEVE IT every single second but his voice gets better in shippuden and let's not forget about Madara and Pain's voices, Sasuke's voice in dub is kinda close to his in sub, and there is also great dub VC that I think did their characters better than the japanese VC like Aizen because you see Aizen is suppose to be a cold villain and smart the sub voice acting for Aizen doesn't give that cold vibe he sounds more intimidating than cold while in the dub Aizen is cold as hell and you can also fear him because the coldness in his voice
I also went through a sophomore "sub only" phase a couple years into being an anime fan. And while, for the reasons you eloquently stated, most of the time the subs are better, it is definitely not an "all or nothing" proposition.
I learned this when I decided to watch Attack on Titan a second time in subs on Crunchyroll. I was shocked to see some of the wording to be over simplistic and lacking nuance and depth. I later found out that while complicated, for early AOT Crunchyroll does not even use the "official" English sub translation. It is complicated, but many of the early subs are only a step above a pirated English manga fan translation. On the other hand, the AOT English dub scripts for the first three seasons are written by J Michael Tatum, who does the English voice of Erwin. I since found that he is the literary genius also responsible for such wonderful scripts/characters as Rintarou Okabe from "Stein's Gate." (In that show, while it is cool to hear the original say "Mad Scientist" in English - Tatum's translation captures the visceral experience of his over the top persona with references and inflections that we Americans can better associate with. While it is technically not a direct accurate translation, I think the overall end-feeling much more closely matches the end experience for a native Japanese speaker and the original. So which is more "accurate" in the end?)
...and that's not even going into how there is always a degree of separation when hearing something not in my native language. To this day I still have a far tougher time recognizing particular Japanese voice actors compared to English ones, Not to mention the difficulty trying to pay attention to the animation while trying to read subtitles and create an internal monologue....
So now I lookout for scripts written by/with J Michael Tatum. The same can be said for other classics such as Watanabe's work ("Cowboy Bebop," "Samurai Champloo" etc.)
But I realize that this is by far the exception and not the rule. Even though I am constantly on the lookout for quality dubs, you are correct that the field is so nitche and small that even now I only know a few other names.
So yeah the sub elitists are correct most of the time, especially with older or less mainstream titles. However my absolute favorite animes of all time are those glorious quality dub exceptions. And I am so glad I am open minded enough to not have missed out on them, and I truly feel sorry for those who have [missed out] because of some silly inflexible elitism.
People who don't watch dubbed don't understand Japanese and just wannabe Japanese. I watch dubbed because I don't have that problem and dubbed is much easier to watch than staring at subtitles

the best way is to learn japanese and watch raw. watching with subtitles is already a compromise, watching it in dub is a compromise in a compromise, nobody would care if dub watchers just admit that dubs are inferior.

If you happen to be interested in learning Japanese, anime subtitled is a good place to start. I've been watching subtitled anime for years and have even learned a little bit of Japanese in doing so. For instance, I can turn off the subtitles on a movie I'm familiar with such as Akira and follow it moderately well. Sure, it can't give you a full understanding of the language, but it's valuable.
It depends on which show you watch and what the vocal direction. Some shows do it better than others, some are just bland asf. There are only some series I watch dubbed.
i started watching anime ~12 years ago when anime wasnt considered cool yet, and im not native in english so i have a really really strong preference for subtitles, but i liked the baccano comparison, i would like to find out what its like to watch dub and enjoy it and id like to try someday

I personally think it is an insult to the hard working Japanese voice actors/actresses and to the Japanese culture itself to watch dubbed voiced over anime. Anime is an art form, at this point it is heavily tied into Japanese culture and is not just something you “watch”. It’s something you experience.
I also think that those who only watch dub either have some sort of sensory issues in the fact that they physically can’t watch, listen and read at the same time or they are people who can’t properly process emotion through voice acting so the dub voices sound fine.

Something I've noticed is that the only country that has managed to have constant good dubs is Brazil. They're amazing and most of the time better than the dub from the US, and on some rare occasions, better than the original sub itself.

I'm not a fan of Disney's English dub of Castle in the Sky as I regard the original Japanese version to be one of Miyazaki's masterpieces. Changing the score is also one of my pet peeves when it comes to Disney's version.
Listen it's really simple, there's nothing elitist about saying dubs are shit and subs are good. Subs allow you to experience the show in the way the creator intended, and it is better more than 90% of the time. On top of that, yes in order to work dubs sometimes need to remove or change things because of translation issues and matching mouth movements -- and that's not ever a good thing, because Japanese culture is a major part of experiencing the art as it was intended.
If you want to enjoy dubs, go right ahead. Just don't bother being butthurt that other people call out things that are objectively garbage and make the art worse, where the only benefit is that you don't have to read subtitles.

Personally I actively watch both sub & dub back to back. That may be weird for others, but I enjoy how an anime is interpreted between English and Japanese, and it gives the anime more rewatch value (to me that is)
i remember being disturbed by the suffix after a name when watching hajime no ippo dub
For me, and I feel like this has become the case for millions, that any other language except Japanese is unbearable for Anime. But when the One Piece Live Action came out, I watched it in English because the Japanese language didn't suit it.
I never knew that Ben 10 was in the same show as Principal Perry
