My sister won’t watch subbed anime with me because she has ADHD and dyslexia so she can’t really focus on what’s being said and done. Because of this I watch a lot of anime both subbed and dubbed and I honestly don’t have a preference anymore. For the most part I judge it based on plot and not acting
It's good to see most of the people having respectful conversation in the comments instead of the usual "ew all dubs are trash" comments
An example of an insanely talented VA is Kaguya's VA. It was one of her first role and the first prominent role....and that blew me away
I think Connor nail it on the head. In Japan they have schools specifically for voice acting while in the west they just have acting school.
The emotional breakdowns usually sound way more raw in Japanese. Sometimes i start to fear for the sanity of the actors.
The dub voice actor for Light (Death Note) is insanely talented! He’s changed the show for me:))
Learning how to speak Japanese from anime is like learning how to speak English from The Godfather
For me dub is better
I can only watch Ouran in english for it to be funny
Imagine giving someone crap because he doesnt watch something in the same language as you
The answer is yes unless it isn't.
I feel like alot of people hate dub because they first watch a show in sub then expect the dub voices to sound exactly the same as the sub.I mostly watch dub and when compare the voices to the sub it sounds weird.A good example is goku from dragonball z.
I think the sub is better
One more factor is maybe because Japanese voice acting was shaped for anime, that's why Japanese language in anime differs from the actual Japanese language.
Some of the best dubs I’ve watched (From my point of view):
I just watch subs cuz they’re usually the first to come out. I don’t really mind dubs either since some can be pretty great, just finished watching a dub of re:zero after I finished with a sub and imo both are pretty well done
As someone who watches both sub and dub, there’s still a ton of fantastic dubs out there I’ve come across. We’ve come a long way since the 90s when before Cowboy Bebop most dubbing was poorly produced like Sailor Moon or the original Dragon Ball Z for instance. And yes the talents of Johnny Bosch, Crispin Freeman, Steve Blum, and Bryce Papenbrook are some of the best voices in the business too.
Black Lagoon, Hellsing Ultimate, and Fma:Brotherhood have greats dubs imo.
Gintama has some of the best voice acting, I always remember them. If they voice act in another anime I can always tell because they have a unique voice.
