For some reason, no one wants to hear anyone's opinion if it's negative of something they like. You can love the things you love and see flaws in them. Sucks that for many other people, they hear someone disagree with them and they lose it, and the fact that that mentality is rewarded and popular kinda makes me a bit uncomfortable to say the least.

I 100% agree about Death Note. The first half was absolutely amazing, but then it just didn’t do it for me anymore after L died. Like L and Light kinda had a sort of rival dynamic that made it really hard to replace L. Also the fact that L was the most interesting character to watch along with Light.
Yea, I can agree, but imo the fact that the first half is SO good, it makes up for it. Like yea, the second half isn't as good, but the first half is unbeatable in terms of entertainment. Also it's not like the second half was bad, or ruined the story or anything. It was just a little more confusing and boring compared to the first. The ending is still 100% my favorite ending of anything, and you can even just consider the part after L to be a bonus.
I actually loved the second half, it provided more unpredictability with the off the wall personality of mello and nonchalant near. It was also refreshing to see how near didn’t fear Kira like L did and looked at catching Kira as a game

I would love to hear Charlie's take on 1997 Berserk. Just finished it 2 days ago & its easily one of my top favorites. I don't think I can bring myself to watch it again after the absolutely soul crushing ending though. I've never really hated an antagonist in anime until watching Berserk.

I feel like Charlie is remembering Monster wrong, because every couple of episodes it goes off on entirely different tangents, where we get some new short story with new characters.
I dunno, I loved Part 4. The slice of life element mixed really well with the bizarre nature of JoJo for me. Sure, most episodes generally existed as a standalone-type thing due to the nature of a slice of life, but I enjoyed it a lot.

Anyone who watches Monster after a nut busting adrenaline pumping shounen is going to hate it. Get into Seinen a little more before reading or watching Monster because the symbolism of Monster along with it's great plot is what makes it my 2nd fav manga of all time just behind Berserk. Johan is so real that it is honestly terrifying to watch through the screen whenever he appears. The anime is probably the greatest Slowburn in fiction

Ergo Proxy was my first seinen and I loved it. I'm currently watching Monster, I'm 41 episodes in and I think it's kind of a mess. Just because someone doesn't like a particular seinen, that doesn't mean they only watch shonen. It's called a taste. But to be fair, I actually do love the first 4 episodes and Johann is a good villain.
Fax as soon as an Anime gets a complicated good plot people never talk about it. As soon as theres a show with cute romance ecchi slice of life fan service shounen harem whatever everyones talking about it
the second I saw Charlie pull up Angel Beats, I knew we were getting into some real shit. I've watched a very small selection of shows but AB really fucking hits weird and I always remembered it for that. Seeing Charlie be completely up on that really solidified my opinion on it.
I read the manga to try to see if the story continued or nearly finished. The anime ended around chapter 320. Chapter 1-320 was 1998 - 2011. The manga currently goes to chapter 390, which was released in 2018. The writer is on his third hiatus since 2011. HunterXHunter will never be finished.
Would love to see Charlie’s reaction to the manga endings of Soul Eater and Akame ga Kill, the latter especially since the manga kills off fewer characters and is MUCH better written and paced. The anime cut an entire arc too, which imo was one of the best arcs in the series.
The manga kills off characters who are alive in the anime like Ran, Bol's wife and daughter. Also they didn't cut anything, the manga wasn't finished yet when the anime was still airing. Gotta give the anime credits for making an ending that the manga didn't really divert that much into
Code Geass is amazing and is definitely one of my favorites, glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks so highly of it. Kinda sad he hasn't seen One Piece or especially Clannad. He talks about emotional anime, but skips over Clannad which is arguably the most emotional anime of all time. Even just hearing music from the Ost is enough to bring a tear to my eye.
Clannad wasn't really appreciated during it's time and is only just now garnering attention because weebs discovered it, realized it's a masterpiece and told their friends. I'm a huge Naruto fan and the only reason it isn't my favorite anime is because Clannad exists. The ending was equal parts emotionally devastating and overwhelmingly cathartic and one after another at that. No show I've seen before or since even comes close to how emotionally invested it got me.

Clannad is also my favorite, and is the only reason Code Geass is number 2 for me. I completely agree with you about the ending too. There's no anime that'll ever come close to what Clannad did for me, not just is it so emotional, but it also taught me a lesson or two about life.

There are also so many complex moral questions posed by the backstories of the characters. Moreover, it has both one of the best antagonists and one of the best MC’s I have ever seen in an anime. That's kind of how modern reviews of media work, usually anything below 7 is terrible and 10/10's are given non-stop. Which is a shame since it makes it so the lower numbers like 2-5 are never used and because of that a 10/10 has pretty much no impact. I wish people treated "okay" products as a 5 nowadays.
Usually I'd agree with you except for the fact that the "Final" season of AoT isn't even the actual final. The anime is set to end on a chapter almost 20 chapters away from the ending of the manga. They're probably gonna do a movie or something with it idk
The Three Kings arc wasn't horrible, it just felt rushed. And it was very different from the Dark Tournament, the Dark Tournament was fighting to the death while the Three Kings arc was pretty much a friendly contest of who would become king of the demon world.
Man, Gurren Laagann was so good that I used to watch it on Animax before I even understood english properly (subs were out of question). The giant mechs, the absolutely illogical but damn af scale of fights.. and Yoko. Yeah that too :)
If you like re zero, you should watch mushoku tensei: jobless reincarnation. It’s a really good isekai with amazing animation. A lot of people drop it after episode 8 but trust me it only gets better
Fun fact with Death Note: The mangaka actually intended to end the anime when L died, but he was pressured to continue it because Death Note was so popular.
Giving monster a C and Jojo post-hamon a low rating are both whack, but calling bleach bad is pretty agreed upon by most people. Tite Kubo is almost god tier IMO at (HEAVY EMPHASIS) creating characters, but he knows fuck all what to do after they're done being introduced.

Which doesn’t mean it’s bad but it might turn off some people. Personally I enjoyed monster but I could feel the slow burn coming as I continued watching and liked the ending even if it was a bit redundant.

@@gedehahsen429 if the only thing you pick up from Evangelion or any Gainax show is surface level references, you need to try and look a bit more into it. Gurren Laggan and FLCL have about the same level of introspective humanity involved in its symbolism as well. Gurren Laggan has a ton of Buddhism allusions that no one even picks up on in the West, but alongside the references it is a lot deeper especially if you rewatch them over and over you start to pick up on it. FLCL has a lot of sexual introspective layers to it. And Gurren Laggan has a lot deeper symbolism with the drill representing DNA and in Buddhism a Spiral represents life. Gainax doesn’t just do crazy action anime they actually put a lot of nuance in the craft.
Monster is probably the most thought provoking anime I've ever watched. So many symbols and signs. It helps you think deeper and deeper into the mind of a human whose awakened the monster inside of his psychological mind

While hunterxhunter technically isn't over, I'd argue that it does have an ending. There aren't really any loose ends and if the manga didn't have more then I think we would have been happy with it
@@Loorens those aren't loose ends, they are new stories that could be told. Hisoka tried to fight chrollo but they didn't at that point. I forgot gyro was even in the anime, I agree that's a hole but it wasn't that big a deal by end of anime. Everything else you said is just totally new stuff. The story doesn't have to go on forever and answer every single question to have a satisfying ending.
Id say there are still loose ends or at the very least characters that feel unfinished. Its been a while since ive seen it but from what i remember Killua and Hisoka felt very half-baked, and Kurapika's storyline was about as much as a loose end as you could get. If hxh were to end as it did in the anime, it would be too unfulfilling for the overall world in context.

My favorite show of all time will forever be Steins;Gate. For me, first things foremost, the most important part of the show is the work put into the characters. Steins;Gate is one of the only shows that I think doesn’t have a bad character. (Except for maybe one small one that’s clearly written for you to hate) And that’s something I feel that this show has on AOT. Not every character is perfect in that show. (Biggest case of this is Mikasa). Besides that I feel as though the show has 2 great but different parts. The first part is so interesting and the second is so emotional. Besides that coming second to Code Geass, the ending is absolutely wonderful and satisfying. Not to mention all the references put into the show.

@@lmao3717 I didn’t say AOT is bad (It’s my 5th favorite show) and I’m sorry but Mikasa is just someone who is thirsty for Eren. Like yes she stabs things really good and her character starts to branch out in season 4 but at the end of the day most of her decisions are based off of Eren. Take her backstory, the Eren retrieval missions, all of that. Only memorable time I remember is when she defeated Reiner which was after Armin reassured her that Eren would be fine. I’m sorry that’s just the sad truth. It’s not on the level of Steins;Gate and Code Geass for me. Does that make it a bad show? No. Not at all. I just think that a balance of character work is more interesting than focusing solely on plot over the characters which is kinda what AOT did in the first 3 seasons.
imo the first like 10 episodes were way too slow for me, I love character building but it was just boring and at the start RIntarou really got on my nerves. S2 was decent but the action scenes were pretty horrible and the party obsessions every other episode was kind of obnoxious. It's by no means a bad show I gave the first season a 9 because past ep 11 it was absolutely incredible and the second season an 8 but I can't give the first season a 10 on good conscience, it is close though.

One of my favorite anime is “Is This a Zombie?” Great music, fights, and humor that pokes fun at anime tropes. Also if you like Angel Beats, you’ll love Charlotte and Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Senpai (horrible title but I’m so happy I watched it). Kill La Kill is like if shonen was made more for a female audience, also fun and great animation. I totally forgot about Casshern Sins, such a good deep anime. The animation is so unique. A good romance anime is My Love Story. It reminds me kind of how Shrek starts before Fiona turns into an ogre lol
Damn, I actually love Darker than Black, it’s my favorite anime. I can tell he’s never watched the bonus series that explains wtf happened in between the two season, but a lot of ppl don’t. I rly enjoyed the story too, but I guess not many understand it as well as I do since I’ve watched it about 10 times
I've watched season 1 and while I don't think there's many plot holes, it really is depressing and miserable. Plus, the episodes got formulaic to me. They kept introducing characters for just a few episodes and then killing them or they were introduced as "Hey, I is a good guy, trust" and then a few episodes later were like "Shock-surprise! I is a villain! “ and that got boring.
@@filipdzero8739 depressing is one of the moods they were trying to set. And the reason it got formulaic was because it was. Each arc was structured to start in one episode and finish the next, so I can understand why people would think that it’d get repetitive, but I wasn’t really all that drawn in by the smaller arcs (except Yin’s backstory because Yin is best girl), I was mainly interested to see how there experiences were going to develop the characters and see how they react to certain situations. Thats why I don’t like season 2 all that much, it felt like one really dragged out arc that got pretty boring pretty fast. Gaiden was perfect because it was one arc across 4 episodes. It lasted long enough to give development and feel invested while being short enough to not feel dragged out
The reason the author ended Yu Yu Hakusho so early and has been so lackluster in his HxH schedule is cause he got incredibly sick and could like barely get out of bed, let alone draw
C tier doesnt mean bad though, I mean you can have "phenomenal" in one or few aspects of that anime such as artstyle/animation/character and still have the *overall* at a C tier

I loved the first episodes of Monster. What brings it down is the absurd amount of episodes about side characters who don't contribute anything to the main story. It's frustrating because the show could've easily been shorter, but better.

Every single one of those side characters explore their shades on humanity so much so that I'd even say that their contribution is what made the ending 10x better. Johan represented the nihilistic side of humanity and tenma represented the hopeful side of humanity and every single one of those side characters are the people who are in the middle of the spectrum.
@@thecollector427bro I loved the side characters. When I watched monster I rolled my eyes every time we switched to a random new character, but without fail I grew attached to them by the end of their arc(especially Grimmer and Richard). Thats a major strength of the show.
He generally likes classic Shounen that is straight forward and does not try to be too different. He also enjoys stories that have linear plot and get straight to the point. Any stories that have too many fillers, and too many converging plots will be rated low. Edginess gets a bonus on his list
Bruh his taste is super easy to figure out. Classic shounen with simple plots and great animation are an easy go to. But he also likes his edgy action shows that follow through with their themes in a compelling way, hence Attack on Titan and Casshern Sins. Throw in some universally popular, great and beloved shows that transcend most "preference boundaries" like Code Geass, Gurren Lagann and ReZero and that's his list. Shows with complex plot threads, lots of dialogue, lack of action, or slower pacing got blasted by him, look at poor Monster. Not to mention the Fate series is a pretty simple, casual as hell, fantasy show these days and one of the easiest things to watch and he called it all "incoherent and nothing makes sense" probably because I don't know they talk a lot sometimes? He's got some banger opinions here (Casshern Sins is fucking great and it is a shame how unknown it is), but yeah like that one comment said, hilarious blend of normie and veteran anime opinions. And I mean considering he's only watched like 75 things in over a decade it's not like he's SUPER hardcore you know?

It’s really not that hard, you wanna go super digging for lore go for it, but man you can do that with literally anything. And yeah Casshern Sins aired on Toonami...in the wayyyyyy early days of the revival when no one thought it would succeed. At 4am. No one watched it there man. I’m pretty sure, as much as I don’t care for the show, Toonami getting the Sword Art Online English dub premier is when the block finally started to gain some steam. Everything before then was it floundering around trying to scoop up any cheap licenses it could. And of course, Space Dandy is what really got the ball rolling.
I love how he explained carefully what he felt and why he ranked all of the show. but when he was ranking Steins;Gate, Mob Psycho and Re Zero, he just simply put them in S-tier because those show were definitely deserving that spot

Totally agree with Tokyo Ghoul. The Anime is a complete slaughter of what Sui Ishida did in the Manga. The manga is 100% one of the best ive read, TG and RE, the artstyle is super unique as well. I wish it wouldve gotten a better adaptation.

I 100% agree about Death Note. The first half was absolutely amazing, but then it just didn’t do it for me anymore after L died. Like L and Light kinda had a sort of rival dynamic that made it really hard to replace L. Also the fact that L was the most interesting character to watch along with Light.
Yea, I can agree, but imo the fact that the first half is SO good, it makes up for it. Like yea, the second half isn't as good, but the first half is unbeatable in terms of entertainment. Also it's not like the second half was bad, or ruined the story or anything. It was just a little more confusing and boring compared to the first. The ending is still 100% my favorite ending of anything, and you can even just consider the part after L to be a bonus.
I actually loved the second half, it provided more unpredictability with the off the wall personality of mello and nonchalant near. It was also refreshing to see how near didn’t fear Kira like L did and looked at catching Kira as a game

Anyone who watches Monster after a nut busting adrenaline pumping shounen is going to hate it. Get into Seinen a little more before reading or watching Monster because the symbolism of Monster along with it's great plot is what makes it my 2nd fav manga of all time just behind Berserk. Johan is so real that it is honestly terrifying to watch through the screen whenever he appears. The anime is probably the greatest Slowburn in fiction

Ergo Proxy was my first seinen and I loved it. I'm currently watching Monster, I'm 41 episodes in and I think it's kind of a mess. Just because someone doesn't like a particular seinen, that doesn't mean they only watch shonen. It's called a taste. But to be fair, I actually do love the first 4 episodes and Johann is a good villain.
Fax as soon as an Anime gets a complicated good plot people never talk about it. As soon as theres a show with cute romance ecchi slice of life fan service shounen harem whatever everyones talking about it
the second I saw Charlie pull up Angel Beats, I knew we were getting into some real shit. I've watched a very small selection of shows but AB really fucking hits weird and I always remembered it for that. Seeing Charlie be completely up on that really solidified my opinion on it.

Chapter 1-320 was 1998 - 2011.
The manga currently goes to chapter 390, which was released in 2018. The writer is on his third hiatus since 2011.

Would love to see Charlie’s reaction to the manga endings of Soul Eater and Akame ga Kill, the latter especially since the manga kills off fewer characters and is MUCH better written and paced. The anime cut an entire arc too, which imo was one of the best arcs in the series.
The manga kills off characters who are alive in the anime like Ran, Bol's wife and daughter. Also they didn't cut anything, the manga wasn't finished yet when the anime was still airing. Gotta give the anime credits for making an ending that the manga didn't really divert that much into

Code Geass is amazing and is definitely one of my favorites, glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks so highly of it. Kinda sad he hasn't seen One Piece or especially Clannad. He talks about emotional anime, but skips over Clannad which is arguably the most emotional anime of all time. Even just hearing music from the Ost is enough to bring a tear to my eye.
Clannad wasn't really appreciated during it's time and is only just now garnering attention because weebs discovered it, realized it's a masterpiece and told their friends. I'm a huge Naruto fan and the only reason it isn't my favorite anime is because Clannad exists. The ending was equal parts emotionally devastating and overwhelmingly cathartic and one after another at that. No show I've seen before or since even comes close to how emotionally invested it got me.

Clannad is also my favorite, and is the only reason Code Geass is number 2 for me. I completely agree with you about the ending too. There's no anime that'll ever come close to what Clannad did for me, not just is it so emotional, but it also taught me a lesson or two about life.

That's kind of how modern reviews of media work, usually anything below 7 is terrible and 10/10's are given non-stop. Which is a shame since it makes it so the lower numbers like 2-5 are never used and because of that a 10/10 has pretty much no impact. I wish people treated "okay" products as a 5 nowadays.

The Three Kings arc wasn't horrible, it just felt rushed. And it was very different from the Dark Tournament, the Dark Tournament was fighting to the death while the Three Kings arc was pretty much a friendly contest of who would become king of the demon world.
Man, Gurren Laagann was so good that I used to watch it on Animax before I even understood english properly (subs were out of question). The giant mechs, the absolutely illogical but damn af scale of fights.. and Yoko. Yeah that too :)

Which doesn’t mean it’s bad but it might turn off some people. Gurren Laggan and FLCL have about the same level of introspective humanity involved in its symbolism as well. Gurren Laggan has a ton of Buddhism allusions that no one even picks up on in the West, but alongside the references it is a lot deeper especially if you rewatch them over and over you start to pick up on it. FLCL has a lot of sexual introspective layers to it. And Gurren Laggan has a lot deeper symbolism with the drill representing DNA and in Buddhism a Spiral represents life. Gainax doesn’t just do crazy action anime they actually put a lot of nuance in the craft.
Monster is probably the most thought provoking anime I've ever watched. So many symbols and signs. It helps you think deeper and deeper into the mind of a human whose awakened the monster inside of his psychological mind

@@Loorens those aren't loose ends, they are new stories that could be told. Hisoka tried to fight chrollo but they didn't at that point. I forgot gyro was even in the anime, I agree that's a hole but it wasn't that big a deal by end of anime. Everything else you said is just totally new stuff. The story doesn't have to go on forever and answer every single question to have a satisfying ending.
Id say there are still loose ends or at the very least characters that feel unfinished. Its been a while since ive seen it but from what i remember Killua and Hisoka felt very half-baked, and Kurapika's storyline was about as much as a loose end as you could get. If hxh were to end as it did in the anime, it would be too unfulfilling for the overall world in context.

My favorite show of all time will forever be Steins;Gate. For me, first things foremost, the most important part of the show is the work put into the characters. Steins;Gate is one of the only shows that I think doesn’t have a bad character. (Except for maybe one small one that’s clearly written for you to hate) And that’s something I feel that this show has on AOT. Not every character is perfect in that show. (Biggest case of this is Mikasa). Besides that I feel as though the show has 2 great but different parts. The first part is so interesting and the second is so emotional. Besides that coming second to Code Geass, the ending is absolutely wonderful and satisfying. Not to mention all the references put into the show.

@@lmao3717 I didn’t say AOT is bad (It’s my 5th favorite show) and I’m sorry but Mikasa is just someone who is thirsty for Eren. Like yes she stabs things really good and her character starts to branch out in season 4 but at the end of the day most of her decisions are based off of Eren. Take her backstory, the Eren retrieval missions, all of that. Only memorable time I remember is when she defeated Reiner which was after Armin reassured her that Eren would be fine. I’m sorry that’s just the sad truth. It’s not on the level of Steins;Gate and Code Geass for me. Does that make it a bad show? No. Not at all. I just think that a balance of character work is more interesting than focusing solely on plot over the characters which is kinda what AOT did in the first 3 seasons.
imo the first like 10 episodes were way too slow for me, I love character building but it was just boring and at the start RIntarou really got on my nerves. S2 was decent but the action scenes were pretty horrible and the party obsessions every other episode was kind of obnoxious. It's by no means a bad show I gave the first season a 9 because past ep 11 it was absolutely incredible and the second season an 8 but I can't give the first season a 10 on good conscience, it is close though.

One of my favorite anime is “Is This a Zombie?” Great music, fights, and humor that pokes fun at anime tropes. Also if you like Angel Beats, you’ll love Charlotte and Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Senpai (horrible title but I’m so happy I watched it). Kill La Kill is like if shonen was made more for a female audience, also fun and great animation. I totally forgot about Casshern Sins, such a good deep anime. The animation is so unique. A good romance anime is My Love Story. It reminds me kind of how Shrek starts before Fiona turns into an ogre lol

I've watched season 1 and while I don't think there's many plot holes, it really is depressing and miserable. Plus, the episodes got formulaic to me. They kept introducing characters for just a few episodes and then killing them or they were introduced as "Hey, I is a good guy, trust" and then a few episodes later were like "Shock-surprise! I is a villain! “ and that got boring.

Each arc was structured to start in one episode and finish the next, so I can understand why people would think that it’d get repetitive, but I wasn’t really all that drawn in by the smaller arcs (except Yin’s backstory because Yin is best girl), I was mainly interested to see how there experiences were going to develop the characters and see how they react to certain situations. Thats why I don’t like season 2 all that much, it felt like one really dragged out arc that got pretty boring pretty fast. Gaiden was perfect because it was one arc across 4 episodes. It lasted long enough to give development and feel invested while being short enough to not feel dragged out
The reason the author ended Yu Yu Hakusho so early and has been so lackluster in his HxH schedule is cause he got incredibly sick and could like barely get out of bed, let alone draw

I loved the first episodes of Monster. What brings it down is the absurd amount of episodes about side characters who don't contribute anything to the main story. It's frustrating because the show could've easily been shorter, but better.

Every single one of those side characters explore their shades on humanity so much so that I'd even say that their contribution is what made the ending 10x better. Johan represented the nihilistic side of humanity and tenma represented the hopeful side of humanity and every single one of those side characters are the people who are in the middle of the spectrum.

Figuring out Charlie's taste in anime is like trying to find where the Zodiac Killer is.
He generally likes classic Shounen that is straight forward and does not try to be too different. He also enjoys stories that have linear plot and get straight to the point. Any stories that have too many fillers, and too many converging plots will be rated low. Edginess gets a bonus on his list
Bruh his taste is super easy to figure out. Classic shounen with simple plots and great animation are an easy go to. But he also likes his edgy action shows that follow through with their themes in a compelling way, hence Attack on Titan and Casshern Sins. Throw in some universally popular, great and beloved shows that transcend most "preference boundaries" like Code Geass, Gurren Lagann and ReZero and that's his list. Shows with complex plot threads, lots of dialogue, lack of action, or slower pacing got blasted by him, look at poor Monster. Not to mention the Fate series is a pretty simple, casual as hell, fantasy show these days and one of the easiest things to watch and he called it all "incoherent and nothing makes sense" probably because I don't know they talk a lot sometimes?
He's got some banger opinions here (Casshern Sins is fucking great and it is a shame how unknown it is), but yeah like that one comment said, hilarious blend of normie and veteran anime opinions. And I mean considering he's only watched like 75 things in over a decade it's not like he's SUPER hardcore you know?

No one watched it there man. I’m pretty sure, as much as I don’t care for the show, Toonami getting the Sword Art Online English dub premier is when the block finally started to gain some steam. Everything before then was it floundering around trying to scoop up any cheap licenses it could. And of course, Space Dandy is what really got the ball rolling.

Totally agree with Tokyo Ghoul. The Anime is a complete slaughter of what Sui Ishida did in the Manga. The manga is 100% one of the best ive read, TG and RE, the artstyle is super unique as well. I wish it wouldve gotten a better adaptation.
