You could not BELIEVE my shock when I rewatched DBZ after a decade and being so disappointed to not hear the 'Over 9000' line read being said in the same way I remember it, only to JUST NOW realize that the reason is because that _one line read_ was in the version of the dub I saw on Nicktoons as a kid and I just forgot that the version of DBZ I watched as a kid was the Nicktoons version of Kai. Here in Latin America, in the original DBZ dub Vegeta said "Its over... 8000", with his voice actor, René García, delivering the line with a shocked tone. Years later, DBZ Kai was dubbed in Spanish with various recasts and Vegeta's new voice actor said "It's over 9000!" imitating the English dub, since unlike the original DBZ dubbed, Kai's was dubbed using the English version as a base

@@The_One_In_Black actually, DB's first Neutral Spanish dub was made in 1993 and based on the HG dub but it didn't cover the entire series, and they changed all of the characters' names. When Bandai entered the Latin American market following the success of Sailor Seiya, a new dub for Dragon Ball was made, covering all of the episodes from the Pilaf saga to GT, and it took almost 6 years (from 1995 to 2000). Interestingly, some actors from the HG dub appeared in the new dub made by Intertrack, for example Rossy Aguirre who voiced Arale in the HG dub became Krillin in the new dub

The English dubs I grew up with in Europe:
    1. Ocean Dub all the way into the Namek arc. It had the Rock the Dragon intro.
    2. Then Funimation took over and it had a Bruce Falconer intro with visuals from the show.
    3. Then they had batches of episodes of both Ocean and Funi. That continued into the Android arc.
    4. Then in the Cell and Buu arc it only had the Funi dub. In the Buu arc there was the same Bruce Falconer instrumental intro with We Gotta Power intro visuals playing.
Years after Cartoon Network was done airing it, new DVD's/VHS were released around 2005 as ''Uncut and Remastered'' thats when Funimation redubbed the entire series from start to finish. A lot of dialogue also changed. It then had a Cha-La-Head-Cha-La intro visuals but with a rock theme playing over it. This is where Vegeta's voice also changed. Chris Sabat did his voice very differently in the original Funimation dub. He started to sound like the Vegeta of nowadays. He was trying to mimick the Ocean Dub Vegeta in the original Funimation dub.
A lot of people seem to forget the original Funimation dub. Which was a lot more cheesy and badly translated than the redub in the uncut and remastered version.
There were also other redubs like for the Orange bricks and then years later came DBZ Kai with another redub. When you see YT videos comparing Original Funi with DBZ Kai its often not even Original Funi, its one of the redubs while Original Funi sounds really bad. It was for example the first voice acting gig for Sean Schemmel and he sounds really bad in the Original Funi dub. Ocean Dub Goku in that time was leagues ahead of him and really was the better Goku. A lot of OG Western DBZ viewers have forgotten about all this and misremember what the original Funi dub was.

2:08 All the episodes made their way online 2-3 years ago. The dialogue censorship and cut scenes are about what you'd expect. Moments like Bulma's "payment" to Roshi or Oolong's attempt to escape only to get to reeled in by Bulma's panties got cut entirely. The Roshi bit played out surprisingly natural despite all the skips around the scene. Another moment in episode 4 didn't, however. It was fun picking up some lines (and dialogue censorship) Funi recycled almost verbatim in their dub.
28:00 The edited Funi dub actually did air on Toonami Africa sometime around 2018.

Its crazy when i think about just how much influence DBZ and Dragonball had on my childhood. I was born in 93', and i remember watching the Sayain saga - Goku vs Recoome fight when i was in Kindergarten. Back then we only did half days for kindergarten, and i would watch it in the morning before school. I remember being sooo disappointed every time it would restart with the radditz fight.
Then i remember being in elementary school, and coming home to watch the frieza saga. Then eventually, the cell saga... I was right around Gohans age at the time, and he was my absolute favorite character. Gohan defeating Cell in that Kamehameha clash was one of the hypest moments of my young life. I remember starting to watch original Dragon Ball around this time too, they would play them on either toonami, or Adult Swim. I loved them too, eapecially the OG tournamemt sagas... Then the Buu saga was huge around the time i went into middle school, maybe early highschool. I owned the history of Trunks movie, and the tournament episodes from the early buu saga on VHS.
And now, we have DBS, and DB kai, another generation is being influenced by Dragon Ball, just like i was.

Correction number 1: Actually the first opening wasn't entirely left in Japanese for a good majority of it. There wasn't English recording of it by the original artist, They couldn't plaster it in time for the US release of the first two to three sets therefore there will be some episodes Play the theme song in English and other times it will play in Japanese.
The second opening's English opening was performed by a CZcamsr. And in fact, all of the music was performed in English, including the infamous Ultimate Battle. (Although I prefer that song in its original Japanese)

I remember being a kid when I first found DBZ. I'm pretty sure it was on the WB at that time. I instantly became a fan and continued watching, however I could, until it eventually became huge on CN and Toonami. We had to keep starting the series over, multiple times, in those days before a set of new episodes would air. I was an early teen by this run through DBZ, when it was Ocean, then really confused when some things suddenly changed, bc of the switch to Funi, when Goku fought the Ginyu squad. It was so surreal at the time bc some of the voices were such huge departures from Ocean, as well as including some blood and other things that came from less editing.

Depends if you count blue water, Westwood, and ocean as the same thing and that's mostly a Canadian voice cast. You can get the majority of the oceans dub, but to know knowledge they never dubbed it all, but I could be wrong, but I wanna say when they started airing it in Canada again they skipped some episodes between 53 and I feel almost a season later.

Those three DVD releases of the "Big Green" dub were the first Animé I bought 20 years ago now in fact, so they hold a special place for me and here in the UK we seemed to get an alternate dub you all seem to miss that was aired on Toonami along with the GT dub you alluded to (gods, that opening...) and I was convinced they had the same cast! In that dub they actually kept the name of the Mafuba Wave the same, an argument about which I had with a mate of mine, though, I have recently found the Opening here on CZcams, it was bugging me so! He showed me three Dragonball Opnenings I'd never seen before in pursuit of the truth! I have shown him the one I knew, but he didn't recognise it! It's still in my Favourites!
And as much fun as it sounds like it might be to rif on the Harmony Gold dub, after surviving Robotech, I'm not going to be watching it, though, I think I might need quite some incentive to experience the Speedy dub beyond a few memes and clips! Some nitpicks/corrections
3:05 Dragon Ball was done at BLT/Dick & Rodgers, not Ocean
4:28 Actually was the first dub recorded/directed at Ocean, but with the same localization process as BLT
4:30 Ron Wasserman. Shuki Levy and Haim were just the only ones credited for royalty purposes.
9:30 AB had no juristiction in Canada, only UK and Netherlands for the English dub, and France of course.
10:00 Considering you didn't criticise Funi's amateur dubbing this is a strange addition.
20:39 This was originally not a GT titled game, it was simply Dragon Ball Final Bout, and remained this way in Japan and Europe. It later had GT added for the US release.
21:08 The Bandai version in Europe had no English dubbing. It was likely Atari or Funimation's doing instead as they are featured on the American cover. They also removed the Japanese intro song for America. Europe/Bandai's is intact.
22:08 'original voice cast' is a bit of a misnomer.
25:29 It also had a CRTC listing, along with the Canadian music credit featured on Anitunes website. The leaked song was also a demo as it did not match the version heard in a editor's reel.
Also, Blue Water's GT dub predated Funimation's as Ocean's Z dub concluded faster than the US broadcast. Blue Water GT was the first GT dub to have Japanese music intact, and for a long time it was the only dub with that combination. The Funimation dub was also not directed with the Japanese BGM in mind, leading to some awkwardness. Unlike the Funimation version, they did not cut out any episodes.

I love that version of the show. (Fight me!) Although the uncut version is the definitive version of Kai, and imo, the definitive version of DBZ overall, it’s pretty annoying to hear different versions of the theme song every few episodes on in the uncut DVDs/BluRays when they should’ve just stuck with the version they used on the Nicktoons version I remember… oh well. So maybe there needs to be some kind of way to refresh it, or sort of reboot/re-tell it.
I always joke about a bit of a "Kai 2.0" kind of concept where you apply the principles of the Kai remaster...

      -New Sound Design
      -New Score
      -New Dub

Maybe taking the opportunity to try and do special edits/versions of some of the movies to make them fit within the canon. Maybe keeping some limited amounts of certain fan-favorite filler. Who knows.
