An icon of 20th and 21st century music, the voice of the civil rights movement, and the undisputed Queen of Soul-there is only one Aretha Franklin. In her incredible six-decade career, Aretha evolved from teenage gospel star to reigning pop and R&B diva, recording classics like “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” “Chain Of Fools”, “Think” (lyrics by Aretha Franklin), definitive versions of the songs “Respect” and “I Say a Little Prayer”, and global hits like “Freeway Of Love,” “I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)”, and “A Rose Is Still A Rose.”
Altogether, 112 of her singles reached the charts, with 20 No. 1 R&B singles, the most ever by a female artist. She won 18 Grammy Awards (including the first eight trophies for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance) and, out of recognition for her for indelible contribution to American music and culture, received both the Presidential Medal of Freedom and a Pulitzer Prize.

@yourmanwatson You are correct about the songwriter and he wrote a very touching song. According to several books that I have on Miss Franklin, the song was inspired by her toxic marriage. She loved Ted White, but wasn't willing to let him go despite pleas from family and friends. Mr. Shannon and Miss Franklin (and others) created a classic.

I have very eclectic taste in music.
Love to listen to Aretha sing.
She sang like you talk, when you
are being honest, and saying what
is deep inside { the real you } .
Genuine, sincere, and above all soulful.
    Thank You Ms. Franklin.

Listened to what was far above and beyond expectation. Sensitive, deeply personal, sung from the heart without the vocal gymnastics employed by so many since. Consummate soul.

The story of how this hit song came about is one of those great seldom untold stories of old. Aretha had been around for a while and put out a string of unsuccessful records. Her style on those records was much different than the queen of soul that she became. But now Aretha was in the famous Muscle Shoals recording studio for the first time and by her side were the swampers. However nothing was happening and there was an uneasy silence in the recording studio as nobody seemed to have a good idea for a song. Then out of nowhere the keyboard player Spooner Oldham started playing that iconic keyboard part, somebody yelled THATS IT ! And within an hour or 2 they recorded the song, Aretha had a new soulful style and she was on her way to being a huge star. Now at almost the same time Spooner was also playing with Neil Young and once again he helped shape a whole different style and generation of music. What a guy!!

    You're a no good heartbreaker
    You're a liar and you're a cheat
    And I don't know why
I let you do these things to me
    My friends keep telling me
    That you ain't no good
    But oh, they don't know
That I'd leave you if I could
    I guess I'm uptight
    And I'm stuck like glue
    'Cause I ain't never
    I ain't never, I ain't never, no, no (loved a man)
(The way that I, I love you)
    Some time ago, I thought
You had run out of fools
    But I was so wrong
You got one that you'll never lose
The way you treat me is a shame
How could ya hurt me so bad
Baby, you know that I'm the best thing
    That you ever had
    Kiss me once again
Don'cha never, never say that we we're through
    'Cause I ain't never
Never, never, no, no (loved a man)
(The way that I, I love you)
    I can't sleep at night
    And I can't eat a bite
I guess I'll never be free
Since you got, your hooks, in me
    Whoa, oh, oh
    Yeah! Yeah!
    I ain't never loved a man
    I ain't never loved a man, baby
Ain't never had a man hurt me so bad
    No
Well, this is what I'm gonna do about it
    I tell you, I'm gonna...
    Whoa-oh, no baby
    I tell you, I'm gonna...
    Whoa-oh, oh

When someone young asks me about love, how one should love, what it means, what tenderness, affection, respect and serenity of spirit are... I always give them this song as an example. Good things never die, thanks you!💖❤❤

She said this was the song that made her career. I saw a vid on Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and the recording studio there, FAME. They showed pictures of a very young Aretha chilling down in farming country in Alabama. All the musicians took to her and they played some damn good back-up. I think that was the Memphis Horns in there, too. This was the Fame Gang, not the "Wrecking Crew" from LA who were also a fantastic back-up band.
