Dan Aykroyd would later say that his "legs, stomach and solar plexus turned to jelly" when Aretha started to sing during the filming of this scene.
Same thing here, every time!
Raising his arms above his head a couple times was too much?
It was amazing, but she was lip-syncing, to herself obviously
@@TheJerbol I think it's just that Aretha sings so good
Aretha was just from another planet. God, what a voice, what a woman!!! If I'd had the choice, I'd have stayed. ❤️
I love how Blue Lou kept his sax on hand, because you never know when you might have a spontaneous musical event happen in a diner. He was a true professional.
The sax accompaniment really takes this version to another level. If you listen to the original you really miss it.
Guy knew he lived in a musical comedy world.
Similarly, Matt "Guitar" Murphy somehow had his guitar in its case and ready to go at the end of the counter.
I like how he is waiting for her permission at the end!!
My sense of humor exactly! What a classic.
The sass, the delivery. She was simply born to entertain. Even before she sang the first note, you knew this was her scene. Gone but never forgotten. We love you Aretha!
Timeless delivery. On it. ❤
Amen!
👍🏼
Still makes me tear up
"The Blues Brothers? Shhhiittt, they still owe you money fool."
The singing is obviously untouchable but can we just appreciate her acting here as well? She's glorious
yup, she looks so young here in 1980!!!!!! so sad she's gone now but no doubt her spirit will R-E-S-P-E-C-T-I-V-E-L-Y live on forever!!!!!!
@V P no doubt back before there were smart phones, all these multiple apps, heck back before cell phones existed as well.
:) Yup, a natural born, dyed in the wool performer.
Her acting was excellent here!
I was just thinking the same thing. She's a natural actress. So talented!
This movie is almost perfect. It's not just a film, it's an experience. It's pure joy.
It's a time capsule back to a simpler, happier world.
Exactly
Regardless of the R rating. Really should have been rated PG instead when it was released in 1980.
@Woody Last Name Yeah ..that was my question too...why almost?
You bettah think!!!!!!
RIP Aretha Franklin
(1942-2018).
And Carl weathers too 1948-2024.
@@chukachinwuba5248um… sure.
Same with Matt "Guitar' Murphy. I believe they both passed within months of each other.
Her acting was impeccable, we don't even need to mention the vocals.
Nobody would have faulted her if she wasn't able to act, because she was there for her musical talent. Even in this scene, Matt Murphy is super stiff with his acting, but who cares because he's a kickass blues guitarist.
But damn, Franklin KILLS this scene. Every line is delivered perfectly and she follows that up with the best song on the soundtrack. The acting was so believeable, it made me second guess if it was actually Aretha Franklin before she started singing. Absolute Queen.
VERY well said!!
Funny how Aretha was actually the best actor in the scene even before she even sang, she nailed it.
Yup, Aretha really makes you believe she owns that little lunch counter cafe and has cooking oil on her dress every day.
We love you Aretha.
Yeah, that is amazing. All the other great musicians playing parts are, unsurprisingly, quite wooden. Aretha is almost as great an actor as she is a singer.
She’s the master of EVERYTHING she does. Thanks to Motown talent!🥰
“Don’t you blaspheme!”
The part where Jake and Elwood get up and flawlessly join the choreography kills me every time.
I love that. Enough to jump in myself this one time only.
It's truly amazing , the dancers , just look ordinary , the post lady ,with the other girls form a believable routine customer in the diner , then Jake and Elwood join in , Blue Lew ,Matt .. and Aretha select lines ,describing Jake & Elwood ..as ....diamond merchants , two white ... Is so realistic without being derogatory ...makes me chuckle no matter how many times I watch this scene ..The Ray Charles scene might no be understood by younger Audiences that didn't realize Ray was blind .. The church scene , with James Brown and the congregation joining in Wow , terrific
And I did practice that movie! Best as ever!
Even though they’re being dogged by the Great Aretha wife… lol
Looked for this comment first. Me too! Gold random moment 🤣🤣🤣
I just love the way Aretha says "SHIEEEEEET!" 😆
Obviously, she was an amazing singer but she was pretty good at acting too.
RIP Aretha Franklin, Matt "Guitar" Murphy & John Belushi
She has a subtle smirk throughout the whole scene as if she's laughing at her own bad acting even though it's quite good.
And she was also an amazing pianist❤❤❤❤
I don't believe a musical scene has ever, ever topped this.
Perfection. I wouldn't mess with her.
This is possibly my favorite scene.
Ehhhh - theres some doozies out there, quite a few in the same movie.
Nothing. Nothing is better than everything about this scene.
correct, it is the scene...
Maybe you should "Shake A Tail Feather"....
Music number: *happens*
Jake and Elwood: guess we’re backup dancers now.
😂😂 never even thought of that!
Well, they know what a performance is meant to be, and maybe if they dance for her she'll change her mind?
I wonder who suggested that they dance? It just adds to the surreal nature of it.
Aretha should have acted in more things, but she would have blown everyone else off the screen.
The blues brothers r amazing but there was no way they were even going to try to sing WITH the legend herself. I bet they decided to just backup dance and let the queen go to work
@@tjejojyj was only in 2 movies, both Blues Brothers movoe
I love how Jake and Elwood join the dancers and sit back down as if nothing happened. Aretha had such a great voice. RIP to you Aretha. And Jon Belushi too.
Don't forget Matt Murphy. He passed away two months before Aretha.
@@Stranglehold185 Oh I didn't know that. That sucks. RIP to Matt Murphy as well.
The deadpan attitude of Jake and Elwood is just brilliant, they only appear to join in the dancing to relieve their boredom whilst Matt makes his mind up.
And this performance from the Queen of Soul is mesmerising, attitude personified.
Some forces are just too powerful to sit through. Aretha being one.
Damn... I forgot they were gone!
Those were the days... years before half the World walked around with their heads buried in their phones, walking around like zombies.
The musical talent in this movie is beyond...
I highly doubt it will EVER topped.
When she opens her throat and lets those high notes rip it gives me chills.
Freedom...Freeeedom...Freeeeeeeedom🖤
Aretha's voice comes along just once in a generation. We were truly blessed to have her's in ours.
Aretha learned everything she knew from Amelia Jackson. not to take away from Aretha. She still floors me.
She's a good actor too
yes indeed
Not a bad actress either, as singers go. 👏👏👏
I can't think of one singer in the most recent generation of singing stars, who can compare to the voice of Aretha.
*"The Blues Brothers?... SH*T.. They still owe you money fool"*
MOVIES..One of the best ever made!
Everything she said sounds like singing
Can you imagine how much it would cost to make this movie today? I heard it couldn`t even be done today.
@@billolsen4360 That`s because she was, lol!
I swear that's the best line in the whole movie. I don't know why, but something about it totally cracks me up lol.
I might've been 13, but I was eyeballing ole girl with the striped shirt! Lol! 😜😹😹😹🎶
This movie is just beyond legendary.
What a voice. Aretha actually out-screamed Lou's sax. Who knows if we'll ever hear a voice like her's again.
Aretha wasn’t taking no mess in that movie. She tore that “Think” song up. She is sorely missed.
And when I saw Aretha in interviews I got the impression that in real life she didn't suffer fools either.
She was The Queen of Soul and still is! RIP Ms. Franklin.

Will someone please tell us the movie title??
@@lorrainedsouza443 The Blues Brothers
Never get tired of watching Aretha and this scene. Aretha's career and the careers of a lot of soul singers were on a down swing at the time, due to disco. This movie brought new life to Aretha's career as well as her new recording contract with Arista Records in 1980. The lady in the postal uniform is her cousin and long tme back up singer, Brenda, the middle, smaller lady is her sister Carolyn, and the taller lady in heels is her long time back up singer Margaret Branch. Unfortunately Brenda is the only one still living. May all of them rest in peace.
Wow that was a nice bit of information that I didn’t know. I just recently saw the movie of her life on the National Geographic channel, and made me realize what a great and phenomenal talent she was. I was to young to understand what a great voice that she had. But I remembered her song Respect and how I loved that song ( I believe that I was 5-6 years old at the time). RIP Ms Aretha Franklin. 💐
WOW did not know this. Thanks for sharing.
Did not know that. I thought I saw the backup singers before. Thanks!
Brown Sugar! How come you dance so good?
Ah thank you for sharing that! I had no idea! Amazing talents!
I always feel that Matt has to hold back a smile - how awesome it must have been to have Aretha singing to him!
I'd have said yes to anything that woman told me to do, right?
I would've been grinning like a fool, even being scolded by her.

RIP The Queen of Soul!
Still is the greatest ! Still is the reigning Queen of soul! May she reign for ever and ever and ever! ✊🙏🙏🙏 ♾♾♾
She still is.
I was talking to my kids and nieces and nephews about the greatest female singer of all time. They threw names around like Ariana and Christina and even Mariah. Then, I played them a string of videos by Aretha. We all agreed. Aretha's the G.O.A.T..
The amount of musical talent in this movie is just mindblowing.
That was kind of the point of the movie. Belushi and Aykroyd intentionally gathered as many blues and soul legends as they could to make the movie. It's amazing that so many agreed, even for bit parts like John Lee Hooker's brief appearance just before this scene.
Almost infinite.
@@earthknight60 It was John Landis that wrote and directed the movie.
Blues Brothers 2000 had a musical too. The movie itself sucked (it was too stupid) but the music made it worth suffering through.

Aretha, truly the QUEEN of soul. Hasn't been surpassed then or since. Belushi and Akroyd knew they were in the presence of greatness.
One of the most amazing parts of this movie is that Jake and Elwood are sitting there pan-faced whilst Aretha Franklin sings up an utter storm!

This movie really showcases the many talents that somewhat obscure black singers were overlooked . The Motown sound and dancing was so very terrific . I know this is a bit later than the Temptations , 4 tops , Supremes , days at Motown . Don't ever think that Lady Souls voice can ever be duplicated . This film has been so over looked ,granted later generations would not appreciate really ,the amazing talent , voices this movie showcases . Or the way it spoofs on the " trendy " cowboy music at the time , when it was rivaling the disco scene .The movie has historical lessons concerning trendy musical themes .
One thing for certain , Aretha's voice is just the best of all time , as every nowadays , will refer to it as the GOAT .Thanks for all the unbelievable vocals . THIS SCENE IS HISTORIC
Look up the Cab Calloway "oh you wanted great? Why didn't you say so" story.
As much as I love Aretha’s singing, I can never get over how funny it is that when she starts singing, Blue Lou can hear her and blatantly decides “Hell yeah, time to play sax again!” It MAKES the song but it makes no sense regarding whose side he should be on. All the more funnier when Jake and Elwood join in as backup dancers.
Trying to get them outta music smashing *_THAT_* tune?! ... 😑 Mistake!
Good actress too
Much love to "Blue Lou" ❤
That theme happens on a lot of the musical. Everyone is united for the song lol
At the end of the song when Matt Murphy walks out with Jake & Elmwood and Blue Lou looks at Aretha like a little puppy dog with that "please" look on his face she tells him, "Well go on, dammit!" She knows his talent was being wasted washing dishes.
I never noticed before that the customers were also singing and dancing (and I must have seen this move a hundred times!).
Franklin was freakin’ awesome
Just remembering when Hollywood could make a movie worth watching a hundred times and enjoy the ride.
I'll sound immature for this but the way Aretha casually says "Shieeeet" 💀💀💀
Absolute Joy, still makes the heart race so many decades later. Perfection.
I'm still amazed the walls (fake or concrete) were still standing at the end of this scene. The sheer power of Aretha's voice should have knocked them down.

Aretha Franklin was so real and unpretentious. She made this movie timeless. RIP Miss Franklin.✝️
I just love when Jake and Elwood start dancing. They have no expression on their faces. Lol. Great movie
For those of us who grew up in this time and lived in the region in 1979-80 when they were filming this, I love how they captured the look and feel of Chicago from this time, the cars, the fashion/clothes, hairstyles, etc, and the outlying city. Watching this in blu-ray high-def is like a time machine. Fantastic memories
The car crash scene is unreal -- what, a 40-car pile-up?? Chicago drivers!
I think Ferris Bueller's Day Off is the closest a movie has come to celebrating Chicago the way it is celebrated in The Blues Brothers.
Don't forget 16 Candles out in the suburbs. So many great movies from there in that time. Oh....and shout out to "Briefcase Full of Blues" album by the Blues Brothers - opening act at Augustana College in Rock Island, IL. Didn't take me too long to figure out why there were soo many Togos and Blue Brothers sideburns at the keggers in the frat houses nearby back then. Sweet memories - don't think another musical will top this one EVER....
Aretha puts her voice into gear and drives it like a prize Ferrari. Simply GOLD.
One of the best and most iconic scenes in cinema history.
The fact that after all that he still gets up and leaves creases me to the moon and back
Never knew Aretha was such a good actress. She should have been in more movies.
