The lines he's redubbing are given his best versions of the original takes for the most part. If he did the lines as himself or the episode was written with him in mind, it could have better than what it turned out to be.

It's a rather good demonstration that the choice of voice actor for a role makes a big difference; honestly, here Summer's Janine and Soucie's Janine come off as completely different characters despite saying the exact same dialogue.
Coulier's also a good example of how sometimes getting someone who can do an imitation isn't as good as getting a genuinely good voice actor to nail the line delivery and/or make the role their own.
It's especially a shame when you have him act alongside LeMarche, who's a much better VA and is much better at imitations. You almost forget that he's 1. Doing a Harold Ramis imitation and 2. Been doing imitations for many of his most beloved voice roles (his Orson Welles being the most obvious example)

The worse thing about Kath Soucie been asked to do that goodie Janine is the fact we KNOW she can do a sassy female that will take no crap. I think its sort of her normal speaking voice. We hear it in Sally from Sonic SatAM or Princess Whats Her Name from Earthworm Jim.
And like others said here, yes, she sounds like a child.

    • @derrickhaggard

I blame the idiots at Q5 as according to the interviews when Kath was hired to be the new VA for Janine she proved during the audition that she can do a sassy girl from Queens who takes no crap from anyone due to actually being from the Burrough itself but when she got the role the morons at Q5 told her that she had the role but to "tone down the sassiness and lose the native New Yorker accent to fit the new "motherly tone the character needs" so basically Kath proved she could be a worthy successor to Louise Summers but was told by the dumbasses at Q5 to pretty much do a different voice that fit more of their interpretation of who Janine was supposed to be.

Comparing the clips show that a lot of successful comedy has a lot to do with the delivery. The Lorenzo Music version of Peter is definitely a lot funnier because in spite of the fact they are saying the same lines, his version has a lot of dry wit to it which is always great while Dave made Peter sound like a dumbass. I am also always going to prefer Lorenzo Music because he is Garfield.

The interesting thing about the redub is how different the intonation is. Music is more of a deadpan wisecracker while Coulier sounds like the stereotypical "dumb guy" voice. It's that sort of sarcastic quality that fits the original Bill Murray character. Maybe it's just how Coulier just sounds, but he can't come off as sarcastic.

Wow, this takes me back 30+ years. I had such a crush on Lorenzo Music's voice as a young teenager. That sly, sexy, and unique timbre, his intelligence and great voice acting, with that witty script... sigh, PERFECTION. (The only other male voices I've adored after him have been Steve Blum and Benedict Cumberbatch, yet Music still occupies a special spot in my heart, to this very day.) So when he was ditched for "duhhhh" Coulier, I was so disappointed. Also got really pissed with how they changed Janine. As a girl growing up in the late 80s to 90s, it felt like a slap to my face. Almost like telling me girls HAD to be soft and saccharine to be "normal." Nail to the coffin was how they dumbed down the whole series.

Remember that sweet ending where Peter stays with Mrs Faversham (from the episode the thing in Mrs Faversham's attic), because she reminds him of his mother and wants to give her some company, I imagined how Peter would continue to visit Mrs Faversham after that.
I then found out in the comics its suggested she died, and the ghostbusters have her Teddy bear in the fire station. Now I have this horrible thought of dave coulier's Peter showing up on her doorstep and the shock doing in the poor old girl.

Sad thing is, Kath Soucie IS a damn talented voice actress. My guess is that not only was this one of her first jobs, but also the director of the redub (more than likely NOT the usual episode director) just didn't give a shit, so she had to go on without any real direction, or just outright TOLD to deliver like that. Which is why I never really blame the voice cast, as someone had to approve of bad takes in their production in the first place. Also, why didn't they ask her to do her adult voice? She has done plenty of adult voices, and they all sound fine, but for some reason they told her to use her kid voice for a grown woman.
Then again, considering it was Q5 in charge at that time, it's expected they would have forced someone to half ass things to save money and time. Though, Dave Coulier on the other hand... Yeah, it would take an act of God to get a good performance out of him.

Dear Phelan, because of you and my own love for Ghostbusters I decided to go and find the episodes of the series. To my luck Netflix had the entire series and hey I have netflix, it's there, it's not bad quality and there aren't ads. So I sat down and enjoyed the treat of laughter, heart, charm, and wit. The animation so reminds me of old anime like astroboy even to some extent. It's not gorgeous but its stylised and has a lot of period dated funkiness. As an fan of animation I adored it. I smiled, I cried, I laughed, I swooned, I gasped. I am always a kid at heart but I felt like an actual kid watching this. Not to say it wasnt intelligent it was! Very!! It feels like the, pardon the joke, real Ghostbusters. I might have watched it eventually but because I fancy you and fancy the original film I gave it more of a chance. I'm in the midst so far and not dispointed...yet. That is except one episode. This one. I was having a grand time and then this episode played. Every episode was Lorenzo Venkman as usual and of course Jeanine was her usual sassy self... until this. That's right...this episode and only this episode of season one had out faaaaavorite blonde full house cast member spewing out what were the very essence of the word dull lines and the rugrats twins voice oozing out of Jeanine. It was off putting! It sounds wrong and it hurts. Every time they spoke all I could think was, to quote Dave himself, CUT IT OUT. I don't know why Netflix only has this version but its disappointing and jarring. Thanks for giving a decent explanation though and comparison . Glad for this review! And for you. I really appreciate you doing these Real Ghostbusters reviews and putting so much passion into them. I like your reviews in general as they're hilarious, but with the TRG reviews I've learned so much more about Lorenzo Music, both just how good he was as a voice actor and as a person. I just do remember watching this as a kid, and at the time I couldn't understand why Garfield's voice kept coming out of some human dude's mouth. I adored Garfield back then. Still do. I'm also a big Bob Newhart Show fan and know a bit about Rhoda, so Music's been a comedy hero for me for some time now. Thanks for letting me know about something else he worked on and for teaching me more about the importance of good voice acting in general. It really is an art. Best.

In the french dub, we didn't have any voice change for the most part from the good to the bad seasons, (except for a few times when one character suddenly switch voices with another, but that's kinda random) so the transition from funny to unfunny, especially for Peter, wasn't to brutal. But holy shit, the Master of Shadows... Everytime in the french dub, when there's a somewhat intimidating demon, Maurice Sarfati was there to give the most overacting performance I've ever heard in a dub job !

    Two things:
-First, now I understand why Tiny Toons and The Simpsons (series around this era) shitted all the time on "dumb TV executives trying to ruin everything thinking they know what kids like", it must have been the Q5 shadow flying in circles around them.
-Second: interestingly, the latin america dub also changed Peter's voice, but I'm not sure if it was due to the change from Music to Coulier. I didn't like the second voice that much, because it made Peter sound so much younger, but I didn't hate it either.

  • @ShanaReviews
    @ShanaReviews Před 2 lety +1

I think a contributing factor to Coulier's Peter sounding off is a combination of 3 things: Direction, Impression, and Writing
    1. Direction, even a VA who is lackluster can pull off a decent performance when directed right
    2. His Bill Murry impression, the problem with doing an impression, especially if its a specific impression, can lead to wonky line reading. As you stated in this review there is a VERY clear difference between the way Lorenzo and Coulier announce and express their lines.
Lorenzo's Peter comes off far more natural because Lorenzo is just being himself, he's not trying to hold onto an impression of Murry versus Coulier who has to keep his voice similar to Murry's which restricts the way he can perform, Murry could get away with this because that's who he is and how he naturally sounds but Coulier has to alter his voice and hold on to it which, as i said, restricts how expressive he can get.
    3. Writing, like you mention in your Bad Episodes retrospective, the writing for the later episodes turned Peter into a less funny version of himself, which would be the nail in the coffin for how well of a performance someone could do, I doubt even Lorenzo could pull off being that version of Peter if he had been allowed to stay on.
these contributing factors is why Coulier's Pete comes off as a pale imitation with the redubs and why it greatly reduces Peter's character in the later seasons.

The original voices seem to have some kind of static to them but then you hear the redubbed venkman and there's no static it's way clearer than everyone else and he sounds like he's much closer to you than the non redubbed characters.
