Kath Soucie is an incredibly talented voice actress. After all, she's Princess Sally from Sonic SatAM. But because of Q5, she plays Janine like she's 8 and constantly looking for her lost Barbie.
Or Princess Sally if written like she’s in a Pontac Era Sonic game. Can’t have a Sonic character not named Sonic be useful to the plot.
There's an old interview with Kath Soucie where she talks about when the staff members talked her through what they wanted for Janine. She even says that she was surprised, because she saw the movie and realized they wanted something very different, but then says "Well, it's our job as actors to give the performance that the directors and producers ask for." Totally don't blame her for taking the job, especially considering what voice actors are paid compared to screen actors.
@@Iris_1217I don’t usually blame actors because they have to do what they are told and you have to be an extremely influential actor to be able to speak against the people who are telling you what to do without getting into trouble.
@@morganyoung3557 Yeah, it's really not Kath Soucie's fault since she was just doing what she was being paid to do. It wasn't her idea to destroy Janine's character.
IIRC even she was a little thrown by how they wanted her to play Janine, right? Like, she's from Queens or something so she was ready to bring that sort of NYC attitude into it, but the directors discouraged that for well known reasons.
I know Kath Soucie is a tremendous voice actor, I've heard and enjoyed her in a number of roles, but anytime a grown-ass woman has to do a "baby" voice to play a character that's a grown-ass woman, it just activates the revulsion part of my brain so hard.
Anime dubs for life, because exactly this.
let's face it, voice acting without extremely direct hands on quality control by a team is going to be a shitshow
anime dubs are not exempt from this in the slightest
Blame the Voice directors for the redubs, voice actors just voice the way they are told to voice.
What makes it worse is Kath *IS* using her 'kid' style voice for this. I recognize this tone when she played BABIES, ffs. Even when they redesigned Janine it still felt.....off.
Eh still better than using child actors, less abuse. Like Adam of YMS, I think all kids should be AI on tv
It's amazing how Peter got a new voice and instantly became completely dead inside.
I almost feel like putting him to sleep.
That's what puberty did to me
I like hearing Lorenzo Music’s voice, he’s like one of those amazing people that you love to hang out with, because of his calm voice. Especially when he voice Garfield and Peter in the real ghostbusters series. He really was the best actor ever.
You really don't know what you have until it's gone...
Can't tell it enough, Phelan's analyzis on Lorenzo Music's voice acting is spot on. Essentially, it's what sets apart a voice actor from a "dubber". Voice acting is not just about uttering something, your prosody must underline the tone of the line. That's why there's "actor" in the term.
In a scene mostly reliant on dialogues rather than actions, it's all the more important.
Neat. You expanded my vocabulary.
I love when phelous talks real Ghostbusters
Same. His Real Ghostbusters videos are the ones I rewatch the most.
@@ToonamiT0M cool
I watched his retrospective all the way through twice and then a third time when i recommended it to a friend.
You can see the love and passion he has for these things.
@@tessalyyvuo1667yeah it’s why I adore learning from his videos 😊
Not gonna lie, even though I was already an adult when I saw that episode for the first time, that scream of Peter before getting fully possesed was still super intense to me.
I still can not fathom that J. Michael Straczynski is the same guy who both wrote for The Real Ghostbusters and helped create Babylon 5. 🤯
I can't fathom how he did those while also doing one of the worst Superman stories of all time in Grounded.
Coulier-Venkman never knows Wat's going on.
Janine: "There's something wrong with Peter. He said I was useless after coming out of the rain."
Egon: "He seems to be possessed by Class M Old Man Ghost."
Ray: "At least he's not possessed by Uncle Joey."
Uncle Joey? Is that a Vargskelethor joke?
@@LikaLaruku Uncle Joey is from "Full House" and played by Dave Coulier, who is the 2nd voice of Peter Venkman (AKA the voice Phelous doesn't like) in "The Real Ghost Busters".
@@DingoWalley01OH!😂 I get it
I can only imagine if Air Commander Starscream possessed Venkman...
@TommyDeonauthsArchives He did interact with Starscream as a ghost in the crossover between Transformers and Ghostbusters
Phelous’s dedication to his craft never ceases to amaze me.
Love your Real Ghostbusters content man
Thanks, man!
A Coulier re-dub? I HAAATE that!
That creepy shot of Mrs. Rogers watching the Ghostbusters arrive at her house gives me heavy "Alone In The Dark" vibes.
A very similar shot happens in the opening of that game - a game which was a direct inspiration for the 1st Resident Evil game.
I have a theory; Kath wasn't just hired to make Janine sound nicer but with how she was directed, it's almost like they wanted her to sound YOUNGER, almost like they felt the original sounded too 'old' or using shitty corpo buzzwords 'mature'.
According to JMS, Q5 said she was too "slutty".
Could also explain how she doesn’t have the accent as a little kid with a New Yorker accent sounds 50 years older.
@@gatchywatchyentertainmentb2090 Even more so when you remember they wanted her to sound more 'motherly' yet....she sounds like a peppy teenager.
Kath can do more down to earth, sassy sounding characters or more mature, wise ones...they gave her NOTHING with this and it's just so sad. They messed up Janine and wasted the talents of Kath
*THANKS, Q5!* 😐
I'm glad you brought up how different Egon sounded earlier on, as it's something that I always found pretty fascinating once I noticed it
Love Ash during the post credits scene where she’s like “Who ya calling Slimer?! Hmph!” 😹
Classic Ash 😂
RIP
🥹😞 4 reeeelz
In memory of Ash
This makes what Phelan says, “And she’s gone” harsher in hindsight
The weird line splicing in this episode was very Bevenfield-esque
Thanks for bringing more attention to these rare episodes of The Real Ghostbusters. I worked with Spook Central to clean up the sound, put them with some pretty pictures and recreate them. It was a lot of fun to see these after so many years. Now preserved for all time no matter who hates them! 😂 Great video!
I'm glad you are helping to preserve these! These dubs are by far the worse version of the episodes but I still find them fascinating. And thanks!
Been awhile since I’ve seen Phelous talk about the real ghostbusters, so this is a pleasant surprise.
Lmfaooooo Janine in the redudb sounds like LiL from Rugrats 😂😂😂
Redubbing in the Real Ghostbusters cartoon makes me think of the Tom Servo comment in the MST3K episode with Devil Fish, "Just because you can edit doesn't mean you should."
Mrs. Rogers honestly was one of my fav episodes (the original dubs of course)...But man was it ever scary the first time watching it as a kid! Such solid storytelling in that first season! Aren't we glad J. Michael was the story editor for the syndication! And check out Mini-Phelous @ 7:15!!!
Aww seeing you as a kid watching Ghostbusters is so cute. It was sweet.
Right? He even had his little table setup. 😄 I'll bet he watched a lottttt of TV parked at that table and chair until he outgrew them.
That was a great review and seeing Ash at the end was sweet, sorry for your loss
Who honestly thought it would be a good idea to re-dub these episodes? I hate how they thought they had to "fix" these episodes
The Q5 consulting firm that ABC hired came up with most of the stupid changes, and ABC went along with most of them. (Q5 wanted to get rid of Ray and they didn't do that.) Peter's voice was changed because Bill Murray commented that the guy in the cartoon didn't sound anything like him. I'm not 100% sure if he just made a comment and somebody overreacted and changed it for him, or if Murray actually demanded Lorenzo Music be replaced.
Maybe the dubbing was an attempt to "gaslight" (before everyone started using that word) kids into thinking that their voices had always sounded like that, but Janine still LOOKS different so it still doesn't make any sense.
It wasn’t even the only show Q5 destroyed,They also messed with Pound Puppies too.
I love that we finally got another of these in depth episode comparisons. Hopefully we get another redub epsiode video at some point.
I remember those claymation ABC ad bumpers... And now I feel old.

another year goes by, and Phelous uncovers yet another redub of the real ghostbusters, this show simply cannot catch a break
I imagine they redubbed the end credits to avoid paying royalties to Ray Park Jr.
It was still in the into, could be some weird thing about paying less maybe, I dunno.
@@phelous I think I might know the real reason at play: ABC was heavily promoting themselves with image branding (At the point of the redub, it was their "Something's Happening" campaign). And a promo of their Saturday morning lineup was one of the things they aired. You can find the promos on CZcams.
What I suspect happened here is that they went overboard and decided to overdub the original music with a dumbed down version of the campaign's (which was one of the worst image campaign songs they had, if you're willing to actually listen to the whole thing). This, of course, did not affect any other airings or future releases for obvious reasons, thanks to the song being a cover.
Was this around the time of the Huey Lewis lawsuit (though as Phelous said, the song was still in the intro)?
@@Metlhd313 I think the lawsuit was before Real Ghostbusters was even a thing.
@@phelous Speaking of which, I guess it's STILL a complete mystery who the actual singer was? I've tried googling to find out who this "John Smith" guy was a few times and nothing comes up at all (except somebody in some fan forum speculating that it was a pseudonym.)
Actually, I once came across someone questioning whether it was even known for certain that that version of the theme was actually by Shuki Levy? I don't know that there's any particular reason to doubt it, but it'd be interesting if it turned out to be some anonymous composer who did that one commissioned job for them.
The movie and then cartoons of “The Real Ghostbusters” are a huge part of my childhood memories lol… along with Beetlejuice and it’s cartoon style 😂
I was at the perfect age, thinking the cartoon was literally the real life movie continuing!
But I love how he points out the crazy stuff and slight differences between versions of the same cartoon! Really cool, keep rocking bro! 🤟😝

It’s always great to get a real ghostbusters video
Well, it seems like you're really busting some ghosts in your research! I'm glad you're taking a closer look at The Real Ghostbusters and getting to the bottom of those changes. Maybe you'll uncover some supernatural secrets in the process!
So Q5 is the devil? I knew it!
Learning about this show (and the 80’s/90’s in general) is a real treat😊
You’re witnessing the greatest era in American animation/Saturday morning cartoons.
@emptyglass7867 90% of everything is crap. That doesn't prevent the other 10% from reaching some impressive heights, even if it was conceived by corporate executives to sell toys.
@emptyglass7867 As if corporations don't make money off of kids nowadays. At least the model used in 1980s involved some creativity and expense. Not everything was a success and more successful toy lines outpaced what was shown in the cartoons. So it was not exactly a one to one ratio of product and what was seen in the cartoon.
But yes, The Real Ghostbusters does hold up extremely well today.
@emptyglass7867 🤦🏾♂️🧢

Man, I love those old ABC commercial bumpers. Thats good nostalgia.
That Kath Soucie take calling him Dr. Venkman sounds like she's flirting with him, not taking a shot at his credentials.
WTH is that alternate credits theme? I've never heard that in my life and now I wish I never had.
I imagine they made Ghosts R Us the premiere episode just because of that "She said it!" moment when Janine says "No, Ma'am. This is the REAL Ghostbusters."
25:31 I don’t know why, but Coulier Venkman asking Janine like it’s a question made me laugh out loud!
Ghostbuster Phelous busting on Peter Coulier always makes me feel good.
What a fun episode! I really loved seeing the story board differences, it's so interesting to see the process from such an early stage up through an entire totally necessary and absolutely critical to the integrity of the show redub
D'aww! Look at little baby Phelan, watching his scary cartoons and learning how to be sarcastic!
Janine, you've changed. ;)
Love the in-depth analysis of this episode from storyboard to production!
Wow that Kidavision intro and the ABC ad bumpers are massive kicks in the nostalgia.
Who you going to call? Old man! Old man : busting makes me feel all right.
I just my finger on why the Kath Soucie version sounds so weird. it's that it sounds like Lil from Rugrats trying to sound like adult.
Thanks for covering the crazy redub that we all found odd when rewatching the series...even on USA Cartoon Express and Fox Family Channel!
Oh! I remember the USA Cartoon Express!
i just loved how laura summer screamed peter dont do it as it just made that scene more real and intense
I love how much Phelan cares still. I remember the times when I did, before I realized that nothing really matters and we are all just passing.
Honestly it's weird how I don't have the revulsion when Phelous compares Venkman's lines back to back, but just the overall emotion when I hear Coolia's performance in dialogue is just a big ☹️ and I have never even watched the show
It's kind of hard to tell from just a few isolated clips. You should watch all of the pre-Q5 episodes and then a few of the later ones.
It's also not just the replacement voice actors, but the quality of the writing drops off a cliff at the same time the new actors show up.
Mmm
@@KasumiKenshirou Even though I like Music's Venkman a thousand times better, in fairness to Coulier I don't think his take on Venkman is as bad as Phelous and many others think it is ---- I think it's the writing that's mostly to blame. Coulier's arrival just happened to coincide with the Q5 mandates, which took the edge off the droll, dry humor Stracynski and his other writers had been so good at. If Stracynski had stayed on and the show's tone hadn't changed so much, I think fans would be less harsh in their judgement of Coulier's take.
@@Marbles471 Yeah I don't mind Coulier's take.
Okay, that footage of your younger self watching The Real Ghostbusters was brilliant. Did you know you had that, did you have yo source it directly from a video-8 cassette or some such camcorder-y thing? I'm also pretty amazed that your haircut has barely changed style!
It was on VHS, my hair here is kinda more mullety but it's better than the unfortunate phase as a teen when I had parted in the middle hair.
@@phelous can see it's a bit more "party in the back" with a second watch. That teen hair sounds a bit weird, but then teen hair often was in the late-80s, early-90s.
Cool. I’m sure you can pull off any hairstyle, Phelous 😊
Aww! That footage of you as a kid was so cute! 😊
27:15 That one actually hurt. Peter is about to release hell, but better not scream too loudly so we don't wake up the parents of the children watching.
You’ve no doubt seen it or read about it. The cast of The Real Ghostbusters got together to talk about the show and Coulier admitted he felt out of place there coming in and doing as he called a “schlocky” Bill Murray impression.
Maurice Lamarch though chimed in to tell him that he did fine with doing his own version and distinguishing from Lorenzo Music rather than trying to mimic Music’s version as LaMarch said they switched horses halfway through. I’ll admit, Music was always better with deadpan humor than Coulier & it really shows that some people can’t pull off that kind of comedy well.
Coulier Venkmen's delivery can be summed up in a Simpsons Quote "Oops, I said the quiet part loud, and the loud part quiet..." When he's trying to do "Smarmy Venkmen, it feels like he's up 5 decibles from the entire cast, yet his screams sound way more subdued and like they're part of a schtick rather than screaming because a ghost just grabbed you.
What's really funny about that is that Dan Ackroyd originally wrote the role of Peter Venkman for John Belushi. If John had lived, the cartoon Peter Venkman's voice actor would have been doing a John Belushi impression. Also, originally Winston Zeddmore was going to have a much larger role and be played by Eddie Murphy, but he opted to do _Beverly Hills Cop_ instead. Imagine what the _Ghostbusters_ cartoon would have been like if that happened.
I'd be curious to see Phelous cover that old Ghostbusters RPG from the 80s if he ever felt like it
Thank you for that as well as the adorable moments 😊😎
This does explain that April fools thing with that exact credits tune 😂
I remember watching this series when it would play the reruns when I was a kid, I remember more of the episodes when Peter was voiced by Lorenzo Music.
A Phelous review about something with Ghostbusters! It's gonna be a good day!! :D
I remember when the real Ghostbusters was on Netflix in the UK that they put the abc dub of Slimer is that you on there. It actually fooled me into thinking i had watched all the pre Q5 episodes and only realized this when i went back to see how bad they were, only to be greeted with Music again. Im glad it was the only one tho. Now if only there was an East West dub. Slimer START TELLING
Aww, the return of baby Phelan!
They literally changed her voice to sound like a young child/baby with Lil and Phil’s voice actor from Rugrats
The original version is still the very best. The first voice of Janine even sounded kinda sexy , but this one totally doesn’t.glad I have the first versions of these episodes on DVD.very good work on this video! I love the jokes about the scene where Peter Venkman states his name. Those made me laugh really hard! Great content as usual man!
Your RGB videos are my favorite!
Thank you very much.
That was so fun and soothing some how. :^)

One of these days Cool-Venk will have a line that Phelous will actually like. And I will be there to see it...

Awwwwwn...☺ Baby spooked Phelous watching The Real Ghostbusters...🤭
Those vhs rips are fascinating. I was born in the year that the dead actor became the president 1980. So I'm old enough to remember how those old tapes would warp and how people would record on the low quality so they could maximize the type's time. That doesn't help with the nature degradation of the tapes.
None of that is what fascinates me about them though. Nostalgic value can override the quality of the recordings. That was more or less for the 20 somethings that may not know about the ups and downs of vhs recordings.
What interests me about them today is how they can serve as time capsules. Low quality or not they are functionally windows into the past. And the student of history can really appreciate them (oddly enough more so when they left the old commercials in; a lot can be gleamed about the zeitgeist of the time from them).
Coulier's delivery of "No! I'm not! I'm Peter... Peter Venkman!" makes him sound like a surfer dude.
Sweet that I found this after seeing the redubbed The Bogeyman Cometh on here the other day. Neat find. Of course, it's still weird seeing Coulier's Venkman going after Slimer like that.
Fun fact: this was my first ever episode. If it wasn't for that possessed Peter scene near the end, I could have shown this in school since our town didn't have cable.
Every time you make a new video I'm happy
I like that Ash got a cameo in this one, doing what she did best. :D
I was expecting you to use that clip of the Dingo character going "Vat...?'
I genuinely have a little appreciation for Coulier, but not for this roll. Hes ok, but just not used/directed well so I dont fault him much. Lorenzo was just to good. Thanks for the episode, these are fun to go back and look at the differences like this. When I was a kid, My mom would go to this one assisted living care facility during the week and take me with her as she helped with a client there. Id sit and watch this show while she worked so its always had a soft spot with me-for the most part.
Venkmann in the thumbnail looks like how everyone feels about hearing Coulier!Venkmann again. Or he's been taking drugs. His brain must be like seriously messed up
Personally I see an unimpressed Nicholas Cage.
Oddly enough, the What demon had one egg and a case of beer for breakfast every morning..
I don't hate Coulier with the fury of a thousand suns but...there's definitely a downgrade in performance.
It’s not just a downgrade. It’s just not right, more so in the redubs because how the originals felt like they were animated for Lorenzo’s performance and energy.
That or Coulier’s Peter sounds like a Family Guy parody of Peter Venkman.
Great Video Phelous!!! I really want to get the ABC redubs from the Spook Central for some of the episodes! Possessed Peter is the memory of the episode! I thought that Possessed Peter was both creepy and cool!
I was looking for that ABC bumper! Thanks for uploading!😁
Yay! More Real Ghostbusters!
Your joke at 17:18 got a genuine laugh out of me.
I started watching The Real Ghostbusters because of your videos about it, and Mrs. Rogers Neighborhood ended up being one of my favorite episodes, as well as the one about the Sandman.
With redubbed theme tunes the Mask cartoon has an interesting variation - both seasons have the exact same theme, but it was rerecorded for season 2 so the cadence on some lines sounds different. It's most noticeable in the opening lines "I gotcha with my winning smile, I'm a livin' lesson in flair and style, you just can't help but stare at my savoir faire!"
goes to show how delivery can completely change the tone of a line and can add/remove the comedy of it
Keep up the great content
12:10 and there ain't no doubt about it! - cue Randy Newman from Toy Story
Do you think you'll ever cover any of the four episodes in season 7? I'm amazed that season even exists with how short it is, I'm sure there's a hell of a tale behind it.
alot of first seasons have very few episodes so its rare to see the oposite
@@latviandragon2718 I imagine the seventh season has quite a story to tell of its production
*Transformers Season 4 laughs with three episodes total*
@@rayvenkman2087 I remember an interview with the writer of The Rebirth. It was originally supposed to have more episodes but then episodes kept getting cut out and they had to squeeze their story into fewer episodes, and large portions became a "toy parade" where characters show up and introduce themselves and then are never seen again.
I never knew season 7 existed at all until fairly recently. My local ABC station (WTEN in Albany, NY) didn't even bother to pick it up. So as a kid when I saw that the new fall promos didn't mention Ghostbusters at all, I assumed that was it.
I remember that rumor they went around for years that said that Mister Rogers was a Green Beret and served in Vietnam. Of course that rumor turned out to be totally not true.
Wasn't the rumour something like "Mr. Rogers has seven confirmed kills." I can't remember if he even did any time in the army.
@@TheSmart-CasualGamer He was never in the military. He registered for the draft but was deemed unfit to serve after his physical, but it is unknown what specifically was wrong with him.
Finally got around to watching this. I remember playing the two "The REAL Ghostbusters" retrospectives and learning of your dislike for Dave Coulier's "Venkman" voice. I can kind of see why with these comparisons, Dave Coulier played more of goofball doofus version of Venkman while Lorenzo Music's was more laid back and more of what Bill Murray's Venkman was in the movies. But the strongest moment for me was the comparison of the Janines, in particular the moment when she yelling at Peter to stop opening the containment unit. Laura Summer's voice sounded more intense, like she was legitimately concerned for Peter's well being, while Kath Soucie sounded less intense and more childish, like her entire performance. Great Episode man.
Mrs Rodgers episode scared the crap out of me as a kid
I don't know if or think this is the case with these Ghostbusters prints, but for the longest time, my local ABC replaced the end theme of certain cartoons with the theme song of our local affiliate to hide the fact they stopped showing the national Saturday Morning feed at 11 for dull local shows. Basically to censor any reference to any shows that weren't coming up next on he channel so we can look forward to some dumb local candle pin bowling show. Anyway, nice to know there's a search for lost or hard to find media no one really wants, but need to be preserved.
omg baby Phelous intently watching cartoons is adorable
Man, if only Pauly Shore had been there to redub Real Ghostbusters Venkman. That would truly have been Peak Venk.
I showed my girlfriend’s cousins (aged 7 and 4) the boogieman cometh and asked “So, weren’t Janine’s pointy glasses scary?” And the looked at me like I was an idiot. Nice job Q5.
This man is a national treasure. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Wat were they thinking? The re-dub sounds so soulless.
I loved those inbetween animation segments ABC had. After these messages, we'll be riigght back.
Coulier's Venkman sounds more like Rick Moranis as Bob Mckenzie than Bill Murray. He doesn't even sound that much like Caddyshack Bill Murray, which is what Coulier was trying to go for.
That clip of Lil Phelan made my heart melt. Such a cutie! 🥹
