Tom Hanks is so likable that no one wants to kill him in a horror movie. Anyway, it's interesting to see how Tom Hanks got his start, even if it was a bit part.
I was reviewing Hanks' first appearance on SNL in 1985 recently and it's absurd how likable he was even then. Some hosts show up and SNL performs around them. Hanks takes complete control whenever he's on screen.
How exactly is this dooshbag “likable”…? 🤨🤔
I was curious about this, since most celebrities tend to have skeletons somewhere. Maybe my Google'Fu is off, but I couldn't find squat. It appears he's just a genuinely nice person! That's really refreshing.

i have to admit i really do miss your horror movie reviews, i still watch your old ones to this day. this was such a hot mess of a slasher movie it's honestly incredible, the script feels like it was written in a day on a stained cocktail napkin and then they just decided to film it because the studio needed a tax break or something. also i appreciate the payoff for all the dragnet stuff at the very end. keep up the great work phelan, i'll always be a fan of yours
You never know how an actor will make their debut. This being Tom Hanks' first film is... a choice

I saw clips of it a while ago. Tom Hanks did say he regretted this movie. Lol. But you gotta love that he was so likable that his character wasn’t murdered. 😂

I love Tom Hanks, but now I feel like if I ever met him, my questions wouldn't be about Apollo 13, Sully or Saving Private Ryan, they'd be about this bloody film instead.

The actor who played Elliot (Tom Hanks) later went on to have a minor voice acting career doing voices for such films as Disney's Toy Story!
He also went on to have small roles in such hidden gems as "The Burbs", "Forest Gump", "The Green Mile" and "The Terminal"...not that ANYBODY remembers those.

One of your funniest episodes ever. Though I'd probably disagree that Ray is the Hamburglar, because the Hamburglar can keep to a motif.
I like how she says "look out the window" after she just saw him... I don't know, teleport or walk away or whatever. I wondered about that in Halloween, too.
I love the animated reviews but it's nice to see a horror review now and then. And even if you don't do them much, the horror video games reviews are something I look forward to. I wonder if you'd consider doing a video of a really bad horror game? There are some sinkers.

I am 38yo, and the first time i discovered Tom Hanks was from when my parents bought the Dragnet VHS tape and we all watched it. Must have been like 89

I remember Tom Hanks on a Johnny Carson talking about how all horror films have a moment where "There's a guy with a knife."
This is a great example of how perceptive and imperceptive I am: I picked up on all the Halloween references before noticing Phelan's shirt...
I even picked up the reference to "The Man Behind the Mask," which I feel works much better in describing Myers even though it was written for Vorhees!
Even in his first movie Tom Hanks is so likeable and actually gives a good performance that A) he is the best part of the movie and B) he doesn’t even gets killed off. BTW love the use of Dragnet I enjoy that movie as well

At the point where like and subscribe is so everywhere that I've gotten used to it being said, I love Phelan taking the piss out of it.
I love 25:30 where you can see it's not a collapsible prop knife and he's just turning the blade so it's hidden between the jacket and the sweater. They work so hard in the earlier scenes to hide that that they can't afford a good prop knife and then at the "climax" do a stab to the armpit like a couple middle schoolers goofing around with a butter knife.
I remember when I was a kid, this show came on TV where Tom Hanks and his friend at the dress and drag in order to live in an apartment high-rise that was only for women.

Are you ever going to review the MONDO/Corradi psychotic Pinocchio “adaptation”, ‘Welcome Back, Pinocchio!’ ..?? It feels like a huge missed opportunity. It’s arguably their most psychotic feature length production, and undoubtedly the most insane Pinocchio rendition ever made

Man. Who knew that the dude in Dragnet the Movie was in other films. Crazy when you think about it.
Even in his first movies, you can see his hilarious charm. Personally, my favorite film of his is "The Burbs." That's hilarious horror comedy with a great character actor cast.

Tom Hanks felt underused. More energy from him there than anyone else in the other clips.

This was originally titled 'Blood Wedding' but was renamed 'He Knows You're Alone' by MGM after they picked up the distribution rights. Director Armand Mastroianni never liked the title, thinking it sounded more like a tagline. In fact, the tagline for 'Don't Answer the Phone', released only six months earlier, was "...he'll know you're alone".

So what happens of Ray Carlton (the Killer) starts stalking someone only to have them break off he wedding before he can give them his business card? Does he just awkwardly go and be Michael Myers somewhere else or is he more like, "Well, you were probably going to get married eventually." Would make as much sense all the other people he kills for tangential connections to a wedding.

It just made me happy to see someone name drop the Dragnet movie a ton. It's really stuck with me since I saw it as a kid, especially the ultra catchy 80s as hell theme song.
The original screenplay title of "Shriek" I think was a better choice than "He Knows You're Alone" (there are more shrieks in the movie than people being alone). Also, if they liked Tom Hanks so much you'd think he'd be given _more_ screentime instead of less, but I guess scenes such as the friend showering then listening to music were way more important and couldn't be cut.
The movie that put Tom Hanks on The HollyWood map was The Rom-Com SPLASH where he falls in love with a Mermaid played by Daryl Hannah. SPLASH just so happens to be one of my FAVORITE movies.
I'm not gonna lie, I fully forgot Tom Hanks was in the movie between the opening and when he appeared. It also felt like they were setting up potential killers (the priest, Elliot Hanks, the pervert professor, etc) but they fully showed the killers face. They also gave him a motivation that didn't fit with the majority of his kills. It feels like two separate stories crammed together.
Ray was certainly a character in this film
Mazes and Monsters is something else, might be worth looking over as well
I live in Upstate New York, there's a theme park that keeps open around the Halloween season, so going to a theme park in cold temps isn't too unusual.
I could imagine Tom Hanks' role was meant to feed into some sort of theme about what fear does but it looks as though it doesn't really amount to a whole lot.
Yeah, I'm there too, and I feel like people go to county fairs, hayrides, etc until relatively late in the season, and those aren't that different from theme parks.
But maybe in Canada (or the part of it Phelous is from) you have to stop going to those places way earlier in the fall for weather reasons?

Wow! So Tom Hanks was in "Dragnet the Movie"? It's amazing what you learn from watching Phelan's CZcams show. When it comes to a pick up move, you have to admit Tom Hank's putting his leg out, and tripping a woman, is a great way to get them to fall for him.
